Thankyou for the clear info. I had no warning and straight into emergency. 17 days later came out of hospital with a stoma. I just got diagnosed with diverticulitis and so glad I went to emerg and got a ct scan and have medication for treatment. Extremely painful in the lower left side and down the back and pressure in the rectum area. I hope to be doing better soon. Great video doc!
My husband developed a colo-rectal fistula from diverticulitis and he was scheduled for surgery. However, by the time the surgery was going to take place he had not had symptoms for months. I asked the docs, if it could have healed on its own, as I had put him on a soft diet and gave him aloe juice. They all said no, it could not heal. We finally insisted on another pet scan and low and behold, the fistula had healed over!!!!!! These anecdotal stories count!!!!

I've dealt with this for 3 decades. Numerous hospitalizations, perforations, abscesses, serious infections, twice leading to peritonitis. It nearly killed me twice. My diet was pretty restricted. I had to avoid anything with seeds or other types of non-soluble fiber. I was pretty careful and still ended up hospitalized 2-3 times a year. Thank you for this insightful video, I am based in the UK, just over a year ago around Christmas my stomach felt bloated and I had a loss of appetite, my stools became black and smelly, then I started passing blood. My Dr recommended I see a specialist and an appointment was made, however, two days later I collapsed and haemorrhaged through my backside, my wife called an ambulance and I was rushed to hospital my BP also crashed they said. I was in hospital for four days, I have no idea what medication I was given, in hospital I had the camera down my throat but all was clear. I was released from hospital and booked in for the camera up the other end, I have to say I was stoic and watched the procedure via monitors, I was impressed how clean my 62 year old colon looked, it was spotless! However, the Dr said there where signs of Diverticulitis but no signs of a haemorrhage, to sum this up I really have not got to the bottom of this (pardon the pun) my GP hasn't really explained to me what happened it would be interesting on your thoughts.
I've been to 2 GI docs trying to get some answers, long story short they seemed really intent on not explaining their thinking/logic and why we couldnt start with imaging leaving me a bit frustrated. anyways after watching your video you gave me hope theres some reasonable healthcare professionals in the field, if next GI doc i go to isnt up to par i'm making appointment with you even though theres significant travel involved. im so done with the pain, uncertainty, and feeling removed from my healthcare providers
I might have this! I've been in weird lower belly pain for some weeks now, mostly on the right side. Usually strickes at night. I went on a hunt initially: I thought it was caused by my ovaries (no problem there). Then my gynecologist sent me to have my kidneys and bladder checked (nothing there either). Because a lot of gas showed up in my scan, I was sent to a gastroenterologist to check my colon. It might be this. So unpleasant when one doesn't know where to start. 😔
Usually it’s in the left side. Very very rare to be on the right side. Like almost never. Send me an email describing the symptoms. drbuckparker@gmail.com
I had diverticulitis once in about 2010, after I had some corn on the cob, which I love but I stopped eating it and never had any problems or symptoms ever again.
Love the video. Why are the diverticula not treatable with some sort of surgery, by being backed up with more tissue or something that repairs those locations?
I think I had a diverticulitis attack recently. Last colonoscopy was five years ago and showed three diverticulum. I the worst pain in lower across lower abdomen. It even bothered me to move and walk. Like I had a painful weight in my belly. Better now, still very sore but doesn't bother me to move around like it did. I think I will address this with PCP when I go for next physical.
Thank you so much for asking & it just shows just how kind I’m certain that you are for asking, “what’s up guys”, because it’s been a long hard week already and it’s only Tuesday can you imagine that but since you asked, “what’s up guys” I will certainly tell you that things could be better but then they could be worse also and isn’t that always the case with life ha ha no matter what’s happening it could always be worse and no matter what is happening it could always be better, although there was one time, in fact actually there’s been a few times in my life where when somebody ask me “what’s up” I could actually tell him that things couldn’t be better, “what’s up” is that things are going so well but then I stop and think you know I suppose something else great could happen and things could even be better so to answer your question “what’s up guys”, I’ll begin by saying things are actually looking up kind of like Paul McCartney wrote that “everything is looking better” and then the severely negative John Lennon wrote, “couldn’t get much worse“, which means obviously that Paul McCartney was an optimist and John Lennon was a pessimist and we all certainly all know that therefore if you were to ask them “what’s up guys” considering they are two people which certainly fills out the definition of guys plural, they would say what they said in that song which they wrote many songs in their career but can you believe they only wrote Beatle songs or actually all the Beatles songs they wrote were before they were 30 years old which really is astonishing therefore if you were to ask them “what’s up guys” they would have been all over the road from the beginning to the end of the Beatles career yet you ask me “what’s up guys” and I can tell you that things are looking pretty good, I’ll come back later to finish answering your question but thank you so much for asking that question.
Many thanks for a great explanation. Can I ask one thing. Once you have been diagnosed with diverticula via colonoscopy are these diverticula permanent.
@@RA82828 same to me Drs never talk about anything after X-rays, ct scan, etc, and only they said if the test shows something we will call you, still not explanation given to me and when I asked they won’t answer and tells me if if I don’t feel well or have a fever to go the ER

I had 6" of my bowels removed because of reoccurring diverticulitis attacks in 2000. I'm experiencing frequent constipation for the past few months. I'm worried that I may need further surgery as laxatives are not relieving the issue. What should I expect? Is this surgery as invasive as the actual bowel removal? Which was horrendous. Thank You
Thank you for this very well done and informative video. I wonder if you can help me. I had basically a full hysterectomy over two operations. After the first one there was a new abdominal pain in my lower left. I have tried for over 3 years to find the source of this pain but nothing. Please advise what the best test would be to check for diverticulitis or anything related. Again thank you for this excellent information presented so clearly.
so diverticulosis is the general condition and diverticulitis is the acute inflammatory occasion that might include infection as well, generally CT scan full blood count and CRP plus colonoscopy are the full package i had to be d,iagnosed, CT scan is the usual approach
I’ve been struggling with what I think is diverticulitis for like six month now I always get a sharp pain on my left lower side and doesn’t feel right. I am also very gassy and sometimes get constipated. I was put on lanzoprozole to reduce the gas but I feel they make me more constipated. I’m back and forth to the doctors all the time at the minute my stomach pain last night was unbearable I had fever and felt I was going to pass out. I was seen by a professional this morning and I was told that due to my stomach not being hard I was not in need of surgery yet. It’s so frustrating and makes anxious at the same time can anyone relate to this
You're lucky, I'm just depressed and crazy. I'm getting anti-biotics for continual UTI's. I'm sure they've saved my life now. But, I am still always in pain, and if I miss an anti-botic for a couple of days, I'm debilitated. Now I know what my problem is.

@@DeathAngleZoe The debt is nominal, (in the grand scheme of things). Anecdotally, if you budget appropriately you can have your debt more than controlled in 2-4 years as an attending. Even primary care attendings have plenty of loan repayment opportunities, and federal incentives to live comfortably. I appreciate the information you shared. This is so frustrating for so many people, because of so much misinformation or rather all information is different from everyone. So what is your consensus on coffee being a component for a flare up? or rather not coffee itself but CAFFEINE? and what about dairy? is it possible for that to be a component for a flare up? MY flare ups for diverticulitis are always on the right side with pain...I dont eat seeds or corn....i eat alot of salads and typically have baked chicken, peel and apple and chop up on it, goat cheese, and pecans. Love carne asada tacos...typically eat one meal a day. I do have comfort morning and evening drinks like coffee with heated milk, Chai, but when i think about flare ups and what I had... its hard and coffee and dairy are always in the mix. I take alot of magnesium daily, along with many other supplements. Wich brings me to another question!!! OK...because I take so many supplements, I often wonder with the diverticulosis pockets could any of those supplements get lodged in the pockets causing an infection ?? tthank you for your time and thoughts you may share .
How would you fast in this nothing per os situation ? Does it include water ? Or would you recommend water , salt and perhaps some minerals and vitamins ?
What about focal wall thickening with surrounding fat stranding 2 bouts of inflammation in 3 months one hospitalization same radiologist read my previous from December CT said this time CT March I should have colonoscopy to rule out underlying metastatic disease I had labs 🧪 CEA 1.1 and CA125 16.1 both WNL for over 50 and menopause

How are you doing now?
If you are a candidate and a colostomy can fix your issues, why wouldn't you consider that? I've known many who had colostomies done and it gave them their lives back
Good luck to you. Sorry you suffer this.
Thank you for this!
More of these for the love of God.
Your presentation was well done, very helpful, informational and clear. I learned a lot that I need to know. I still don’t want to have the surgery.
I would like information on: 1) Diet thru the various stages and for how long. 2) Which brand(s) of protein powder/shake and how much thru the various stages 3) Which probiotic species, b. longum, b. Infantis, b. reuteri, boulardii etc. 4) pain management for someone with concurrent gastritis, currently using XS Tylenol, diclofenac supp and still in pain. 5) What stage to introduce fibre, or gradual psyllium husks. 6) Thoughts on L-Glutamine to rebuild gut lining. Please help I'm in a lot of pain, no antibiotics recommended because I had c-diff for 6 months ended last May.
Ask your primary care Doctor for a recommendation of a GI doctor. Sounds like you could need a specialist.
Excellent video. 👍🏻
Excellent job! Thanks
Ahh some refreshing content.
A bun pun 😂
I've been to 2 GI docs trying to get some answers, long story short they seemed really intent on not explaining their thinking/logic and why we couldnt start with imaging leaving me a bit frustrated. anyways after watching your video you gave me hope theres some reasonable healthcare professionals in the field, if next GI doc i go to isnt up to par i'm making appointment with you even though theres significant travel involved. im so done with the pain, uncertainty, and feeling removed from my healthcare providers
Because imaging costs money probably I live in UK and get the same thing they wait till you are nearly dying before the give you a CT or MRI
This is a much higher quality video. I smell a Sony camera lol. Awesome video doc 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Dr Parker excellent explanation .
Thanks for an enlightening session on a poopy subject 😊
Thank you very much !
Very good information and most of all really well and simple explanation . Thank you
So much information! Thank you
I might have this!
Very very rare
to be on the right side. Like almost never. Send me an email describing the symptoms. drbuckparker@gmail.com
@@drbuckparker I know somebody who had it on both sides
Appendix on the right and will hurt so bad you will double over in pain. Diver is through the middle and to the left
Asians can have pain in the right I read
You are the George Clooney of Physicians! Thank you for the important info.❤🇨🇦
And what does George know?
I had diverticulitis once in about 2010, after I had some corn on the cob, which I love but I stopped eating it and never had any problems or symptoms ever again.
I love these videos!
Very educational and I'm going to get that app!
He’s back!!!!!!! Yay. Something different.
Love the video.
Why are the diverticula not treatable with some sort of surgery, by being backed up with more tissue or something that repairs those locations?
Thank you Dr Parker
Love the content. Gen surg all the way.
I appreciate very much if there are captions for deaf viewers !
Finally someone explained these situations clearly ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Many thanks for a great explanation. Can I ask one thing. Once you have been diagnosed with diverticula via colonoscopy are these diverticula permanent.
My understanding is yes, the diverticuli don’t resolve on their own.
Really like the video, would love to see more.
(Thank you doctor I was diagnosed with mild diverticulitis but was not told what it was. You have helped me to fully understand.
@@RA82828 same to me Drs never talk about anything after X-rays, ct scan, etc, and only they said if the test shows something we will call you, still not explanation given to me and when I asked they won’t answer and tells me if if I don’t feel well or have a fever to go the ER
So well done, making a video with down to earth explanations, that ordinary people can understand. My sister died because of this disease, constant infection, she was elderly and stitches did not hold time an again.
Thank you very detailed🤗
I had 6" of my bowels removed because of reoccurring diverticulitis attacks in 2000. I'm experiencing frequent constipation for the past few months. I'm worried that I may need further surgery as laxatives are not relieving the issue. What should I expect? Is this surgery as invasive as the actual bowel removal? Which was horrendous. Thank You
Thank you
Thank you I'm a bit concerned 😟 😨, when home with antibiotics it went away but it came back my pain is in my right side.
Thank u doctor for this video great help bless u an ur team an family u all besafe
Thank you. So helpful
Outstanding! Thank you so much for the excellent, detailed explanation!!!
Nice video. Great explanation and useful revision for me.
Just a little mistake I picked up: at 10:37 you say 'ascending colon' but I believe you mean 'descending colon'?
haha yes i just saw that myself. oops!
Dr. Parker,
What can we do to prevent this issue from happening? Also, what are things that most often cause this: constipation? genetics?
This is what can happen when you eat like there’s no tomorrow, and too much of it!
10:37. Remove Ascending? Colon?
Been following you for a while.
2+ years now.
I matriculate soon (albeit US-IMG) but I matriculate.
Going from RN to MD took a while.
Just gunna do my best, study hard, and hope I match.
I'm 22 and in my second year of nursing school. I often consider going into medical school but feel discouraged when I think about the massive debt I'll be in. Is it worth it?
@@DeathAngleZoe The debt is nominal, (in the grand scheme of things). Anecdotally, if you budget appropriately you can have your debt more than controlled in 2-4 years as an attending.
Even primary care attendings have plenty of loan repayment opportunities, and federal incentives to live comfortably.
You will do fine as a physician, even if you're shackled to federal loans or SallieMae for a few years.
@@AZ-wg3eg Thank you so much for your response. Did nursing school benefit you throughout medical school?
@@DeathAngleZoe but yes, I'm broke as shit now.
It's not about money.
This road will teach you delayed gratification. As an RN you have at least 10 years before you're an attending. That's if things go smoothly.
@@AZ-wg3eg Hahaha, I'm broke as shit right now as well and yet, still considering putting myself into even more debt.
Good for you for all the hard work you're putting into yourself. It's incredibly inspiring to me.
Doc, I have a diverticulitis and recovered with antibiotics. My stool are not solid. Most of time is soft and not in good formation of shape when I passes out. Is there any treatment or medication?
Once you are not actively sick with an attack anymore you might want to try taking metamucil daily, but check with your own doctor!
Thank you. The seeds and nuts have to be avoided just because they are hard? what if they boiled and cooked thoroughly to become soft would that be okay to eat? I'm just curious. Thank you again.
I too had a stoma done something I didn't think I was going to have because I was only 57.I too had good surgeon and stoma nurse and home care until I knew how to change it.I ended up having a reversal about 8 months later so no more stoma bag.
Always get your medical records from a ER. I was never told I have this until I got my records.
Thank you for sharing this. And you didnt even swear once!!! Lol🤣😂 I love watching all your videos and Instagram. Stay cool!! 🍻

I'm doing water with pedialyte powder because I'm having loose stools.
What about focal wall thickening with surrounding fat stranding
2 bouts of inflammation in 3 months one hospitalization same radiologist read my previous from December CT said this time CT March I should have colonoscopy to rule out underlying metastatic disease I had labs 🧪 CEA 1.1 and CA125 16.1 both WNL for over 50 and menopause
