Thank you for uploading this video it has really helped me. I have a interview in July of this year at the IBEW. I really want to become a member more than anything I’ve ever wanted, when I tested there were 23 other people that tested,I feel the pressure there is real competition.
I’m currently on my 4th year as a electrician trainee I will have my 8000 work hours in 3 months I’m going to test for the journeyman exam and when I pass the test I will go back.
I looked into the union route. Actually got “hired” on by a company at $15 an hour. But after I saw that I needed to take a test and go through a whole 3-4 month process to even get into the union, I decided to go non union. Submitted an application for a commercial company. Pretty much got hired on the spot at $18 an hour, setup in school with the IEC, and no aptitude test to take. Not sure why the union makes you jump through so many hoops. I’m sure it’s a great option for some though. Just not for me.
Hey bro, I want to become an electrician can you tell me if it’s a problem if I don’t have a car? I’m 19, I never really drove much, so I don’t have my permit. Like what time do you have to arrive to the work site? Will it be okay if I take the bus
Brooo how did you do it, I want to get into a union so bad. I called my local office and the guy told me to message him my info but he never replied. What are the steps that you took?
This gave me anxiety thinking about the whole process. Heartbeat going up, shortness of breath, nervousness, and everything. It sucks to have english as a 2nd language, being an introvert, lacking social skills. I know I'm smart enough to do the work, i have a associates degree in electrical technology graduating with high honors. And im still without a job.
@@irisakay3878 The interview went well, but boy did i feel pressure when i walk into the room. Was expecting 5 or more people has long as you answer every question properly and at least make them laugh i think your good. BTW if you could bring in a resume/cover letter for everyone that would help too. Never hurts go above and beyond. Its not required but it helps. any way good luck with the interview ;)
Just got accepted into my local JATC program starting in June. Officially a 1st year apprentice when school starts. Just wanted to thank you for the video and anyone that commented on this video.
Believe it or not. It is easier to become a Cop or a correctional officer than a union construction worker lol. The aptitude test is crazy for construction. Police officers will hire just about anyone
It's been 10 years since I've taken math. I passed my test. I went to my local library and got a basic algebra , algebra 1 and 2 books and studied 5 days a week for a couple months. Don't spend the money on a tutor, class if you can commit to studying by yourself
what does it consists of im currently in calc 1 so I'm not too worried but it would be nice to know specifics besides just arithmetic and algebera/ geometry. ( I will do more research before you flame.)
Ive applied and was given and interview date right away. Ive also earned a college degree with good grades in Alg 1, 2 and geometry. Did they straight up exempt me from the test? Before you tell me to call them, I will, im just genuinly interested in other Apprentice applicants experiences.
The questions from the interview, they have to be answered by electrical experience or your last job (any other type of job) I don’t really have that much electrical experience 😢
If you applied during august, and then assuming you got in right after, you might make the cut off for those years classes. Most locals run school late august - late may (I would double check with your citites local). This means that if you got in around september or later - they will most likey start you out on the next years cycle. So to anwser the question directly, I don't believe most will start any later than that timeframe.
That depends on what knowledge you do have. For me I didn’t have any so I went with something along the lines of “ I don’t have any at the moment, but I’m eager to learn about the industry” - they like to hear that someone is ready learn and ready to go to work - good luck to ya!
@@JermiahJones At an interview for IBEW I did respond similar to that but when I was done I noticed in their faces they didnt like that response at all. I live in SoCal and its highly competitive to get into the IBEW apprenticeship so they seem to be focusing on admitting people who already have knowledge and work experience under their belt. Might work in other regions of US but not SoCal.
@@CaseNumber00 hmm yeah that’s understandable since it is a highly competitive area. But I would imagine they would be keen on hiring a few with no experience - this is because it allows them to kind of mold someone into what they think is a good electrician. I hope you hear back brother!
Im curious about when they made you take the drug test. I recently got an email saying that I received a passing score on the aptitude test and that I will receive an interview date some time in the near future. I heard after the interview they give a drug test. Also whether the drug test was hair for you or pee. I smoke weed and have smoked weed for years and have only been drug tested once when I was an Amazon driver. (Passed that test with synthetic urine) Im confident Ill pass the interview because I have passed every interview Ive taken. My interview at frys electronics was in front of 4 department managers who questioned me simultaneously. It was nerve-wracking but they liked me and hired me the next week. Im willing to quit but I would like to know exactly when I should expect the drug test so I can prepare myself.
You are correct about it being after the interview, so if you get in they’ll send you to do one. It’s nothing extensive it should just be the basic pee in a cup type thing - so just be ready for that. I’ve never heard of them doing anything more, so unless your local is just way different, you should be good. Good luck too you!
In our apprenticeship, you are drug tested randomly and on a regular basis (your contractor and the job site also drug tests). Even if weed is legal in your jurisdiction, it is still not approved Federally. Even if you have a prescription, its a no go. There is a no tolerance policy on job sites because of the on the job dangers that are present. If you can't stay away from the weed, I recommend a different career. Expect to be drug tested regularly.
In my school transcript I don’t have algebra but AP Calculus. Although it’s a higher level of math, does that matter? Would I have to take a course on Algebra? Or am I okay with that?
I already quit smoking but I’m not sure if I’m completely clean yet! What does the first time drug test process look like? Sent to a lab? On sight when they Feel like?

Hey man, I’m 19, I don’t have a driver license, all I have a is a permit, I will try to get it asap. My question is, is it okay if I take the bus to the job site? Like what time is the time you have to show up? I’m about to get a job at McDonald’s. Should I just work there until I have a car and license?
