    Great video. I learned more from your video than hours of watching other guys. I think scannerdanner would have turned this into a 10-part miniseries. Lol

      Thanks man! Scannerdanner is on another level than me. I don't like to micro analyze patterns and get too far off in the weeds. I like to know just enough to get the problem fixed correctly the first time and fast as possible. Your average tech just needs to know the basics and be familiar with his/her scope and they are all set.

    Thank you for the no nonsense video. I also bought a used Verus Edge. Same thought process as you.. I agree, the platform is awesome, wish I could afford an ATS eScope, but for now, trying to get really comfortable in the realm of scope use in everyday situations. Good stuff, thanks!

      Great minds think alike. Yep, use it often even if not really needed until it becomes muscle memory. Used mine two days ago to bail a coworker out when he reached the end of his rope. He spent half the day using a dvom with no answer but I had the fix in 20 minutes. I vary rarely do circuit resistance tests, almost always connect the scope up.
      I recommend the aeswave 10' test drive leads, use them all the time. www.aeswave.com/Test-Drive-Test-Leads-for-Snap-on-4-channel-Scopes-p9964.html

    Definitely one of the best presentations of this subject I have seen on youtube, thanks for sharing this and and taking the time to make it; I never even take my car to mechanics anymore and one of the reasons many do not know how to use an O-scope, just crazy in this day and age...

    • @raincitywrench117

      Appreciate the feedback! I think this industry is frowned upon at the high school level so it's tough to attract competent labor. Top skilled technicians are in high demand but it takes years of dedication, training, determination & reinvestment to reach the top.
      That said: You are correct, most mechanics do not own or know how to use a scope.

    I also have the verus edge and vantage pro , I like the how mobile the units are and so far haven’t had any need for any other scope including using pressure transducers .. I keep my verus updated through subscriptions .... I appreciate how much detail that you have put into this and even though I’ve been a scope user for years I learned a couple things here ... if you don’t yet have a pressure transducer I would recommend the ats 500 psi for in cyl and a vacuum transducer that you can either make or purchase very reasonable . You have a real good Chanel , thanks ,

      Thank You! I heard Snap On no longer supports updates on the edge but don't know if that is true. I'm due for some updates but think I will only do my autel and leave the verus alone. Pretty much just wanted the edge for the four channel and works perfect for my needs. Just did a video a couple weeks back which located my problem in minutes. Would have been extremely difficult without a scope:ua-cam.com/video/bacDwmmojm4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=RainCityWrench

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  2 роки тому +1

      Just looked up the Apollo D9. See what you are saying now. It doesn't have a scope module. I bought the verus edge specifically for the oscilloscope feature. I almost never use the scanner. I prefer my Autel tablet. Was told Snap-On no longer supports updates on the edge but don't care. As long as the Verus scope keeps working, will take this unit to my retirement. Have a friend that bought a pico but love my verus unit because the scope module is plugged into the back plus it's a compact easy to connect unit.

    Thanks a lot for making this video. Good stuff. I’m learning a lot but i’m unclear about how the compression event is realized as voltage. Doesn’t the spark fire and produce the same amount of draw regardless?

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  2 роки тому +3

      You bet. It's really simple, the clamp in this video is measuring current draw from the starter through the battery cable. When the engine is cranking it will take more force to push each piston on its compression stroke so the starter will require more amps to turn the crankshaft over on each compression event. The clamp converts that to digital signal that can be viewed on the scope. To determine what each cylinder is on the chart requires a secondary channel and trigger on one of the ignition coils like cyl#1

  • @Jpilgrim30
    @Jpilgrim30 3 роки тому +1

    I used to use low amp clamps for diagnosing parasitic drains but I got tired of replacing 9 volt batteries in them. Now I use the power probe hook in latched mode in series with the negative terminal. It’s also a little more accurate over time as there is no drift involved like with an amp clamp. The newer style Pico amp clamps with the auto shutoff are better about drift but it still happens to an extent. I just wish snap on would tweak their scope software a bit. Instead of giving a certain value for the amp clamp size they should just let you select the conversion scale like my old OTC handheld scope. That old OTC also had longer time bases in the graphing meter as well up to 24 hours.

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  3 роки тому +1

      Never used the power probe hook. The negative cable stays intact or is it disconnected? The snap on definitely is not the best but does get you in the ballpark.

    • @Jpilgrim30
      @Jpilgrim30 3 роки тому +3

      @@raincitywrench117 you take the negative off just like you would put a multimeter in series to test. The Hook has the option to latch the switch to pass the current and measures as the current passes through it. It’s very accurate, measures milliamps, and has min/max recording. It’s nice because you can leave a charger on the battery and let the hook run indefinitely if you have one of those problem child’s that come on randomly overnight. No spring about clamp batteries or buffer size. I use my scope for a lot of things including in cylinder pressure but I’ve found using the Hook to be so much less of a hassle for drains especially when it’s not something easy to find.

    What if the injector is stuck? To add on to your presentation, if I may, the viewers should know about the injector pintle closing shut. After the spike and during the descend, there is a small and almost un-noticeable "hump" just prior to the end of complete cycle time. If you didn't know this and as small as it is, your less experienced/knowledgeable tech could overlook it during the diagnosis of a dead misfire. The hump indicates the pintle slamming shut. If the injector is stuck closed, there would be no hump. If it was stuck open, well you know. Great informative and valuable presentation for the learners and even the techs needing a refresher though.

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  3 роки тому +4

      You sir are correct. The pintle hump is barely noticeable in my video with the Snap-on. Would come in even better using a picoscope with the higher resolution & sampling rate.
      I'm by no means am an expert but with that said I decided to put together a quick scope video for a few enquiring subscribers & anyone else interested. Thanks for watching!

    Versus Edge runs Windows 7 and Snapon has deemed it a security threat.
    The Zues replaced the Verus five years ago and the Zues runs on Windows 10
    Snapon has already started saying “updates for the Verus will stop in 2022-ish”
    Sad thing is...aside from computer hardware and operating system, there is ZERO difference between the Zues and Verus “Snapon diagnostics software”.
    The Zues just comes with a new color scheme.
    If you’re looking for great beginner scope, buy a used Verus Edge. I paid $4000 five years ago for mine and now a days I see them running $2000.
    The Verus Edge will also work as a graphing meter, dvm, ohm meter...

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  3 роки тому +3

      Spot On. I turned off updates last year due to security software causing screen glitch. Deleted the last couple security updates & working perfect since.
      Was told Verus updates end this year but either way their day is limited as far as Snapon is concerned. I saw a guy had a Zeus that was running Windows 7 so looks like that was installed early production on some units?
      I picked up my Edge for 3500 bucks mainly for the four channel & still happy with it. Hope it keeps going strong for years to come.

    I was looking to purchase a used SanpOn Verus Edge but was cautioned when I examined it. It would not read codes when I was trying it out and I only see 2 channel lab scope on the menu when I am using a Verus Edge 4 channel lab scope module? Is there a setting that needs to be changed? I haven't bought the unit as of yet but may still get to if I have an answer. thank you

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  Рік тому

      Will be tough for me to answer without holding the unit in my hand but I would start off by reviewing the user manual chapter 5 & 6 to see if it's a pairing issue and then trying OBD direct mode. As for the scope issue, you should see 4 channel lab scope in options (see page 115) If so then two of the traces are turned off and can find the information starting on pages 110. www.snapon.com/display/3871/VERUSEdge_UserManual.pdf

      My autel touch screen stopped working and snap on scope wouldn't boot up around the same time this spring. I was looking at the pico 4425 & escope elite4. But since I already had all the test leads and amp clamps the snap-on verus edge solved both my scanner and scope needs. I may just bundle everything up on ebay someday but for now everything is working fine. What scope do you have?

    • @raincitywrench117

      It depends on the make and model but yea it will do a cylinder contribution test. If the vehicle is pre 1996 OBDII then no it won't. My last shop has a Sun 500E oscilloscope and that would short individual cylinders. Just had to connect pickup probe to #1 plug wire and primary leads to ignition coil.

      Comes installed, just need to pair it with Wi-Fi. This is from Snap-on: SureTrack community membership is currently only provided with the purchase of a Snap-on VERUS or VERDICT scan tool or with a bundle update for those devices. The MODIS Ultra and SOLUS Edge, with Wi-Fi, get SureTrack data inside the scan tool but do not allow the user to interact with the SureTrack community.

      I bought my verus edge on eBay used for $3500 US. Trendyol in Turkey is the largest e-commerce platform in that region but don't think they will have what you want, may be worth a look though. We take so many things for granted here in the states. There may be some sellers on eBay or eBayUK willing to ship to Iraq if you sign up and use a PayPal account. I don't know what automobiles are sold over there & what protocols they run but if you want to pull codes, do bidirectional controls, monitor pids, etc then an Autel scanner will be what you want. They have global software which will be able to handle European models that are probably running in Iraq. If what you want to do is look at sensor waveforms and computer networks then you will need an oscilloscope like the snap-on used in this video. Hope that helps.
