  • I always seem to have a plant that needs to be moved. Either it’s too close to another or I’m redoing a flower bed and want it in another location. Certain perennials are easy to move, especially if they were recently planted. But established plants can be difficult.

Peonies are the pinnacle of spring flowers. Can I get an amen?! But have you ever looked at their established roots? Since peonies take a few years before they really begin to settle in fully, transplanting them can be a bit difficult.
Fall is the ideal time to transplant peonies. Why? Peonies go dormant in the fall and have less stress being moved. In my Iowa Zone 5, that time is September. If you're in a southern state, that time would be November.
    Here are some tips:
    - Start with a well-watered peony.
    - Choose the new planting site and have the new hole ready.
    - Dig down and pry slightly to break up roots. For established shrubs, dig 18” from the crown of the plant.
    - Continue to dig in a circle around the shrub until the roots loosen enough to remove the shrub.
    - Place the shrub in the new hole, ensuring the eyes on the crown are at ground level.
    - Water the peony in the hole to ensure everything is moistened well.
    - Backfill the hole with dirt and tamp slightly.
    - Continue to water the transplant until the ground temperature is cold enough for the plant to go dormant.
Transplanting seems scary, and yes, I have lost a few things over the years. But when you need to move a plant, it often works out better than you think!

I've moved into a home and was surprised by the most amazing peonies! I don't ever remember seeing peonies before and so I have been trying to learn about them so I can have a great production in the spring.
It is September now and I've heard some say to trim them to the ground and then move them but I don't really know which benefits the plants more?
    Thanks for your video!

Thanks for the simple but good video on transplanting peonies :) how deep should the holes be for herbaceous & Itohs? I see sometimes people say 12"/18" or 20". What if the soil has a lot of clay in it ?!! thanks.

I just moved 2 today , first part of March 2021
Do you think they will bloom this year ?? They had little shoots or growth on the roots .
They have been in a area for years , they bloomed but I do not think it was to its full potential of the flowers . Maybe in the wrong place 🤷‍♀️
Love your attitude on just digging it up and transplanting it! lol 💕
I’m glad I found your channel!

I live in North Carolina. I tranplanted a peony plant that needed more sun. I was able to split the root ball but have 2-3 pieces that I haven't decided where to plant. One of them I can see pink crowns and the other 2, I see white crowns. Can I store the 2-3 pieces somewhere until Feb-March? Thanks for any feedback

What fertilizer did you put in the hole before planting the peonies?

My mom recently passed away and she has a beautiful peonie bush in her yard. I dug up a small part of the root ball, but I'm not sure if it is going to make it. Can I send you a picture of it and get your opinion? Thank you!

I live in Georgia, it is still hot in September. I am doing some yard work now in December, our days are in the upper 50s, could I still transplant them now?
