    We did this about 15 years ago. We bought two bags from Costco, so 6 plants. Since that time I have divided them a few times. At last count this year we have close to 100 full plants. I have started digging them all up this year so that we can make more room. Its as if we have been invaded.

      Wow!! What a sight that must be when they bloom!! I had a similar situation when my folks bought a property and re-landscaped...I ended up digging them out, potting them up, and taking them to the garden club's plant sale. It seems that peonies are always a good seller at our town's plant sale. I hope they have a great upcoming season!

    Love peonies. They are critter proof, more than double in size with age, are beautiful, varied and can smell wonderful. Ordered them from White Flower Farm, and received the bare bulbs. Spent an agonizing time, having spent good money, on which was the down side and which the up. Asked neighbors to guess and when we agreed, in the ground they went. They are three years old now, flowering as we speak, a beautiful white, and I guess we were right. But, please, nurseries, come up with a way to mark them. I am not a novice gardener, and after that experience, I just bought them in pots.

    So I purchased some Sarah Bernhardt peony from Walmart they were the bare roots for like $5 each .I purchase 8 of them and planted them on April 10 I can’t believe they are growing I have little sprouts coming from the ground. Thank you so much because of your video I feel like I succeeded . I hoping for some blooms but if not that’s ok .I understand that it’s their first year .I am just so happy to see that they are growing it’s only been 17 days since I planted them in the ground .Thank you again your video helped me out 😊😊

    I’m glad I saw this video. I just bought some peony roots from Lowe’s and don’t know what I’m doing. Just watched another video where she put bio tone in the hole. But her plants were already bloomed. So that must be why! I thought I had to go back to Lowe’s for biotone for the roots I have but you’re saying to wait until they grow. Glad I saw both videos! What about steaking? The other made it seem mandatory. Can these plants support themselves? Thank you for the good information!

    • @HomefortheHarvest
      @HomefortheHarvest  3 роки тому +3

      Oh that's fantastic! Peonies are so gorgeous and perfect for low-maintenance gardening. With peonies, I generally feed mine when the little purple stems are about a foot high and the little leaf bunches are just starting to unfurl. I just use a granular fertilizer spread on the surface and let it seep in as the plant gets watered. As for staking peonies - I go for a less-is-more approach on that I suppose lol 🤷‍♀️I staked mine for a few years, but I really just did not like the look of the stake itself or the way it gathered the leaves. So instead, I've planted my peonies so the leaves of adjacent peonies are pretty much touching. That helps a bit. And I've planted them in a sheltered area, so that works too. And lastly, when any leaves do flop over and don't rebound, I just trim them off. I think I would pay my peony plants more attention with staking if I wasn't so busy staking my crazy delphiniums lol... I'm so happy for you to be adding peonies to your landscape!!

    • @andreapoole4778
      @andreapoole4778 3 роки тому

      @@HomefortheHarvest ok great, I will wait until the leaves start to unfurl to fertilize, and I’ll plant a little closer together. Yes I was excited to hear in the videos I was watching that peonies were a low maintenance, easy flower. So to then have the girl in the other video start pulling out elaborate staking devices made me think that that was the opposite of low maintenance! Ha ha! And the funny thing is I’ve never really noticed peonies before so to see them at Lowe’s and see how ruffly and pretty they were and that they also give off a fragrance I was really excited to give them a try. So I will get busy planting and hopefully they will be great! Thanks again!

    • @HomefortheHarvest
      @HomefortheHarvest  7 місяців тому

      You can definitely plant peonies in the fall. It's actually the perfect time to plant them. That said, I've planted peonies in all seasons (except with frozen ground) and they all seem to pull through alright as long as they have enough water. If you plant a little root like the ones in this video, it might not have flowers at all for the first two years. I tend to get a couple cute little flowers in year 3-4, but it takes until year 5 for the plant to really look like a whole bouquet of flowers blooming. But once you get to that stage, the plant lasts for decades. It's a long game 🙌

    • @HomefortheHarvest
      @HomefortheHarvest  3 роки тому +2

      I hope so! I'm thinking probably 1-2 blooms for these in the first year. They are sometimes really small little blooms in the first year, and so sometimes I do trim them off to let the plants concentrate on root development (leaving the leaves though). I've never planted peonies in containers (that I recall), but I think they would be quite lovely potted up. The plant might look a bit small the first year, but it will push up more stems each year to create a fuller look. You could always plant a living groundcover plant. I have creeping white moss thyme around some of mine and the colors are nicely complementary

    Oh my gosh, I didn’t realize they could be purchased this way. Do they grow in window boxes?

      Ya, I just started buying them this way a few years ago after learning how to divide some old "rescue" peonies from a construction site lol. I don't see why not - They do get big root balls over time, but they're slow-growing.

    Is it possible to plant in a pot?

    Hi I just bought peony bulbs and to my dismay I see it's best to plant in the fall. I'm in zone 7a. Can I save these bulbs for later? Can I plant them now? Not sure what to do, thanks!

      You can plant them in May. Honestly, I've planted mine last year in June and was perfectly fine. I have a few more and I will plant them tomorrow May /05/2022 ☺😊

    I would never plant peonies in spring, fall is the best time.

    I guess I won’t bother asking any questions here on this channel!!!! I see many people have asked questions with no reply that was 1 year ago! Must not care to much about the channel and increasing viewers and subscribers
