Greeting's from Ireland, When my wife's grandmother passed away over thirty year's ago she had an old big peony rose in her garden. The cottage was left to my wife's brother and he wanted to bulldoze the back garden peony included. My mother in law saved tubers and gave one to us which we planted into our front garden. In february I put fish blood and bone around each plant and then mulch the flower beds with homemade compost and that is it for the year. The only downside is the flowerheads are so heavy when it rain's for a few days there falling apart. But we are lucky it gives lots us of flower's and is easy to maintain.
We inherited 3 beautiful red peony bushes when we bought our house 20 years ago. Been told by an elderly neighbour that he’s seen them there all his life. When we paved our driveway we did it around the peony bushes. Apart from prune them in September, I don’t think we have ever done much more. But we always get a beautiful display every spring 😊
Wow- I’m not nearly so careful with my planting and they are full of flowers. I just make sure to feed in the spring with lots of compost/manure and don’t let them dry out too much. End of care. 👍🌸

Wow! I had something coming up in a big flower pot that I had no idea what I’d planted. Immediate I recognized it from your video as a peony! Thank you!
Fascinating, thank for sharing this insight. I've moved peonys a few times and they've generally recovered fairly quickly. I will be trying your method of impeding downward rooting next time as I've never had the number of stalks your plants show and can see how new shoots could be encouraged with shallower/spread out roots. Here in the UK, the main problem I experience is beautiful blooms being ruined early by winds and rain (flowering here is in April while "April showers" are common and "March winds" often revisit). The 10 minutes it takes to build a twine support tied to four canes (hidden by the abundant foliage) before buds open pays dividends, protecting the flowering stems from all but the worst of the weather.
@@vel230 I transplanted mine at the end of winter when they were dormant and the stems dead. I don't know if moving them while in growth would be successful.
Thinking about planting some of these near my central a/c unit. The condensation tube during the summer should deliver a very slow but steady drip all summer.
Ok, so you say. Last year was a dry year, but I just had the BEST bloom ever on my bushes, in fact a new bush planted last fall bloomed too. The one difference, it was the coldest winter in about 4 yrs. I think peony just does what it wants?
The fine roots are the feeder roots even if you plant peonies properly the plant has to obtain enough energy in the storage roots to supply the crown of the plant to set buds for flowering the following Spring. I planted a peony in (2017). It flushed out with foliage each year. However never flowered. This year in 2024 it's gorgeous and full of huge blooms. They are fickled finikey plants for sure!!! They slept first then they crept and finally they leapth!
I lived in Asheville NC and I saw some Festive Maxima Peonies at the Mountain Inn Motel on Tunnel Road. They were beautiful the owner planted them at the surface you can see the storage roots and he fed them very heavily with (10-10-10) fertilizer they were full of blooms and really needed to be supported to prevent the blooms from touching the ground.
Remember to stake them for the best look, the blooms flop over, I got bamboo stakes and I feel like I get bigger flowers because they aren’t being weighed down
I hate you and your pond water! So JELLY, here…! I wish I lived on a pond because I’ll bet you have some monsters! My biggest is only around 18” across but have heard of single plants the size of car hoods! ❤
Grow near the West side of a big house that can provide lots of shade right after noon for the hot part of the day, but they'll need full, unobstructed sun all morning as this is skirting the line of not enough overall sun. Also grow with lots of deep amended compost in hot climates, as it helps you skirt the fine line between not enough water and not enough oxygen at the roots, which is a real problem where you are. Also research your varieties carefully, as some can grow a whole zone warmer than others
Peonies are very forgiving plant. They bloom every year, transplant it everywhere there is sunshine or under the shade. I live in the Zone5-6. Easy to divide and supplant, will slowly grow the first year.
She won't reply. Look up your planting zone for your area. Look up the general zone for a peony. Herbaceous peonies and itoh peonies and tree peonies are your 3 general kinds. Within those are different varieties of flowering colors. I'm pretty sure it's 3a-8a
I purchased a peony two years ago that was unmarked and no yet in bloom but it was surrounded by a variety I wanted. I planted it. It had the yellow stamens. I dislike these but it apparently cross bred with one of my other peonies. It was a magenta colored peony that now has the yellow stamens I dislike. I dug up the offending peony and gave it away, how can I get my older peony to revert back??

I’ve been super cautious not over watering but I’m thinking perhaps they need more water. Growing mine in pots, first season 2 have flowers forming. Any tips or advice as to why my leaves could be turning in. Will be transplanting mine into soil in autumn
Beautiful, 1 question, my peonies after blooming get a light mildew fungus on their leaves, is there anything to help with this problem? Thanks for the info, I will be transplanting this autumn.
I would try sulfur powder. Mix some in their water, use a bucket and a tiny bit of Castile or dish soap to break the surface tension of the water. Do this every other watering on any plant bothered by mildew and/or spider mites.‘I find if they are sulfur sufficient they are lest prone. Also dust the plant with sulfur in some sort of shaker or puffer bottle situation.
They don't like overhead watering especially in evening or at night so leaves/blooms can't dry out completely. They need air flow around the plant and good drainage.
@@Tarot_Time_with_Belle could you suggest to me where I can find information on this? Your plants are planted too close. Wait until September and cut all the foliage off, dig the mature plant, divide it as peonies do not bloom well if just transplanted, plant three feet from other plants as peonies do not compete well with other plants, bushes, or trees. They are heavy feeders once mature. Feed them three times a year if you can: Early Spring, after blooming, and September.

I need to learn how to grow peonies in pots but don’t seem to find experienced videos.
Peonies don’t grow in pots. They need to be planted in the ground.
In cold climates, peonies are planted with the eye 2 to 2.5 inches below the soil. There seems to be no effect on their blooming.
I read that the highest eye tip should be 1" - 1.5"

Sulphur is soo bad for our environment. Breathing it in cab be dangerous. There’s absolutely no need for it with peonies

They eat the sugar on the flower to allow the flower to open

Something like a 10 - 10-10 is fine or less. Compost is your safest bet
