Can I Sin on Accident? 😬

- "If no one gets hurt is it still a sin?" "It was just an accident."
How can we know if our actions are a sin or just a mistake? Can we be committing sin without knowing it?
Today Fr. Mike details the three elements that must be present for an act to be a sin and helps us grapple with our own sinfulness and God's desire for mercy and reconciliation.

I was taught that we should always end our confessions with a phrase like "for all these sins and others I have forgotten, I am truly sorry".
That's sound like a really great idea to do at the end of confession
I had not gone to confession for over ten years when i left the church and the priest i went to confession with said in the absolution that i was absolved of all the sins that i committed and don't recall. That was a real blessing. I would not be able to remember 10 years of sin and if i went down the list i would have been there for hours. I also asked Jesus personally to forgive me for all of it.
Something I learned while in RCIA is that it is very hard to "forget" a mortal sin. In fact, it's very hard to commit a mortal sin because you are making a conscious decision to go against God's word. I think that if you often forget your sins, either you may need to go to confession more often or they were not really MORTAL sins. Just remember, the only sins you need to confess are the ones that damage your relationship with God. Venial sins are forgiven by asking, praying on it, or receiving communion.
@@christiandpaul2022 as long as you truly intended to confess all mortal sin, and didn’t leave anything out or purposely try not to recall some out of embarrassment, or any other bad reason, you did well. It is, however, necessary to confess any mortal sin whenever you recall it the next time you go to Confession. say you’re married and you cheat on your wife, and you’re so overwhelmed by that sin, that, in confession, you forgot to mention that you also watched pornography, once you realize this, although you have been forgiven, it is still necessary to mention it the next time you go to Confession.
@@claudiaaegsidone it's still good to confess venial sins though as they can become mortal if committed habitually afaik
About 30 years ago I worked at an arcade. I found 20 dollars. And two people asked me if I had found 20 dollars. I told them NO. I still remember that sin. And it still hurts me today.
Just go to confession and be in peace you get closer to God it is very peaceful.
You are forgiven when you did something without knowing it is a sin ( intentional)
Don’t linger on that and ask forgiveness. Our God is so … merciful slow to anger and Rich in compassion ( psalm 103:1)God bless 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
The only unforgivable sin is the one you don't forgive yourself for. God can't forgive you if you don't move on from it. Shame is what the devil wants you to feel. The more shame you feel, the more you feel unworthy of God's love. Forgive yourself, go to confession, and live well.
Do as recommended above but I suggest that you pay it forward to someone who is in need of additional funds.
Don’t worry just ask the lord to forgive you and he will
3rd. And I sinned so many times and yet God is forgiving and merciful. And everyone here ❤
Thanks Fr.Mike!
Sin no more!
God forgives those who are truly repentant, and gives them sufficient grace to overcome their temptation for that sin.
We all need DIVINE MERCY, God help us.
God is hurt when we say no to Him. I'm trying to say Yes always. It means going to church when I don't want to or praying when I'm feeling lazy. I've become more aware of these occasions. They may not be mortal sins but they hurt our God because we are rejecting Him. God Bless. Claire.
You're sweet.

@@AlexanderBrown77 Got it. KJV bible. 66 books. So this is a Protestant response.
I would honestly like a Protestant to help answer this, but unfortunately, none have ever been willing to engage. I try not to present this as a "got ya" scenario, but rather an honest and critical concern as to the Protestant stance on Christianity.
The Protestant viewpoint rests entirely on the concept of Sola Scriptura. However, in order for Sola Scriptura to be true, there would need to be an intra-scriptural reference as to what books constitue the canon of scripture. Otherwise, how can we know we have the correct number of books, or that we have the correct books? Due to the fact that there is no intra-scriptural reference as to what books constitue the canon, one would have to appeal to an authority that is outside of, and above scripture. This would make Sola Scriptura a false doctrine.
If I'm missing something, I'd be more than willing to hear you out.
What a wonderful teaching. Thank you Fr Mike for being a GOOD & FAITHFUL SHEPHERD.

@@Call_Upon_YAH It's not the Holy Spirit that tempts you to pray against His Spouse, the Virgin Mary. "Pray to" means, in the archaic, original meaning, "ask for." What do we ask the Virgin Mary for? For her to pray to God for us. Just like a protestant may ask someone else to pray for him. When Jesus, on His Cross, gave Mary to the Beloved Disciple to be his Mother, He gave her to all of us. It's through Mary that Christians are ingrafted to the vine of Israel and become children of Abraham. We are commanded to honor our father and the mother, so Jesus expects us to have a relationship with Her.
Before listening I can unequivocally say NO…. You need to have FULL CONSENT OF THE WILL!!!! I am old and we had a Baltimore catechism and memorization as a child is a great foundation
That's for mortal sin. Btw, it's full knowledge, full consent of the will and it has to be grave matter. There are venial sins though
Mortal or venial both need the three conditions like angel above said, going into more depth. Also, if something is wrong but not necessarily a sin, but I think its a sin - then do so anyway it is a sin for ME! I used to think crossing against light was wrong but NOW I find with impaired vision, in my neighborhood to not cross when allowed because it turns quickly and cars are right there to rush through. Thus, I stand back and then when no cars visible ai quickly get across street. It is breaking thr law but NOT a sin for me as it is so much safer! Dumb example I know!

It's high time someone wrote a book called "Is It a Mortal Sin?" and went through common human behaviors. Would ease the minds of many.
@@annalovesjesus16 Not true. There is one unforgivable sin, but there are many forgivable mortal sins, where it takes confession to absolve it. Break the commandments, go to confession. Commit a sin habitually and do not try to overcome it, go to confession. Tell a fib because you didn't want to do your school homework and you say "The dog ate it," probably doesn't require confession to the priest, even though it is a venial sin.
Now I am thinking that everything I do is a sin. Just did a confession last week after 16 years. But it is really hard to avoid certain things that I previously thought not a sin. Oh Lord forgive me for I am weak
Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me a sinner

Wow praise God! I’ve been in your position before- I know it can be really frustrating and discouraging.
It’s extremely important that you don’t walk alone in your journey. Find a priest, deacon, religious sister/friar, or experienced layperson and tell them about what you're experiencing, and they can help you find a more balanced view of what is or is not a sin (which may take time, and that’s okay).
As one of the saints (I forget which) said: our Lord is not a tyrant. He doesn’t want to rule over us to constrict us. Yes, it may feel like a strain when we give up things that are sinful, but even in this life we will find great joy and freedom in being free from sin and open to love and virtue.

There are so many Catholics who take ‘missing Mass’ lightly as if it were only a ‘small’ sin compared to stealing or killing…or find the smallest excuse to not go…or think watching Mass on TV or UA-cam suffices. I think it’s a result of poor catechesis, lackluster example by others and pride. Keep encouraging them to go, tell them about BIY, join a Bible study, drop hints about times for Confession, witness joyfully. We are all in this together.
This was spot on… thank God he is a forgiving god.

Fr. Mike has inspired so many people to go back to Reconciliation, and for me, frequently. Praise be to God!
This is an excellent explanation, because it goes into the psychological and circumstantial details. Without teaching there is no shepherding and the lambs remain ignorant and can still offend God in ignorance and fail to live to their potential virtue. Every priest should be saying these things.
Thank you for the clarity and patience is the explanation! Very important lesson for us 🙏🏻
Thank you Father Mike, you always touch my soul, and my heart. God Bless You.
I really needed to hear this! Thank you Fr! God Bless
Thanks for the video fr Mike! I shall say YES to God from now on...
You sir have helped me through some tough shenanigans. Many thanks for your wisdom.
For me the hard part is when you are emotionally not completely conscious of what you are saying. For example, if something bad happens to you and in a fit of anger and hurt you say something mean to another person… but as soon as the emotion is gone, you realize you shouldn’t have said it and apologize. I never really know what to think of these situations.
happens to me more than I'd like. I confess it just in case, because it's a sin against my fellow man and thus to God
As always Fr.Mike hit the nail by his inspiring words. God Bless you
I tried telling my dad and my brother that they should go to mass on Sundays and they told me that since they believe in God then they don't have to go to church. I told my dad, who is 75, that not going to church is a sin and he wouldn't believe me and got hostile. But I felt it would be a sin if I hadn't told him. I told my brother as well and he has the same view as my dad. And I can't force them so I guess it's up to them to decide at some point to go to church. Whenever I go to church, I feel loved, and when I go to confession, I feel good about myself for doing the right thing or at least trying to do the right thing.
It's hard to communicate with people... Praying and waiting is often the best way. We can talk and talk and it doesn't matter how true what we're saying is, or how well you're explaining yourself, people see things through the lens of their own battles they're fighting, and we need the Holy Spirit to bridge the communication barrier. And sometimes the Holy Spirit wants us to wait, and to trust Him. He loves our families more than we ever could. He would never let His children wander away without finding them and pursuing them. God has His own plan for how to bring them back, and maybe your part in it is to pray for them and pray for the right words to say, but even more to trust God to love them abundantly, and trust Him not to leave the future of his beloved children's souls to the outcome of one dumb conversation where everyone was talking past each other. Don't worry, trust God, it's all handled, everything is okay.

You’re are so right Father Mike! It is putting our want first and not putting God’s will first and refuse to sacrifice our sinful wants.
I think it's possible to not realize that you sinned. It's ignorance that causes this. That's why we have Catechism classes and Sunday school, so we can recognize culpability. But, when I go to confession I also try to remember to tell God my sins and then also say that I am sorry for anything I didn't remember to say that I did, and anything that I have not learned about regarding sins. Honestly, sometimes it seems like everything is sinful….no matter what you do.
It can feel that way. Every little thing I do is marred by inherent pride
Don't be consumed by our famous Catholic guilt, lol. God bless
Being scrupulous is something I am guilty for, but it leads to a lot of shame, which is what the devil utilizes to get closer to us. Sins are conscious decisions to turn your back on God. Everything else is our fallen human nature. Everyone commits venial sins, but that is why attending church and receiving the host is so important. It brings us closer to Him and we can start again.
@@claudiaaegsidone Are personality weaknesses a sign of fallen human nature? Like if you have a tendency towards self pity, fault finding, reacting overly sensitive to rejection, crying easily , feeling indifferent to others suffering, or wanting to be the center of attention? What about perfectionism
Be very sure that God definitely doesn’t want you to feel that way, and neither does the Church. That feeling of being trapped or “damned if I do, damned if I don’t” is not from God, but from the evil one or our own anxiety (speaking from experience).
I keep coming back to watch the videos that Fr. Mike posts, although I have no idea why I keep doing so. I have so many questions about my faith, but I have not gotten any closer to finding the answers that I seek by watching these videos or by posting my comments. It’s quite frustrating
That was so good, incredible.
How about a video on whether or not thoughts are sinful and have to be confessed even when we don’t act on them. And perhaps a follow up vid on how to keep mean, sinful thoughts out of our minds. Much going on in the world today that poke and point us to awful thoughts that might lead to sin. Thanks. God Bless us all.
I wonder if emotional reactions are sinful. I know people say getting offended or feeling insulted is due to pride. Is the rude person let off the hook? I honestly think feeling offended is an emotional reaction.
for sinful thoughts it's not a sin unless once you become aware of them you keep them purposefully at the front of your mind. our broken nature means of course stray thoughts which are unkind or impure will come to us, but once you're conscious of this thought, say this either out loud or in your mind:
Jesus, Mary, Joseph, help me
at least for me, this helps me root the sinful thought from my mind and get back to normalcy.
The thing I struggle with more is, “Lord, I think I know what you want, but I’m not sure.”
Example, haven’t said my daily rosary that I have committed to doing as an auxiliary member of Legion of Mary, but it is 11:30 PM. Long and busy day and I need rest for tomorrow. Does God want me to say the rosary or go to bed?
I will answer you the way I handle that situation, since this happens to me sometimes. Yes, God wants you to say the Rosary, and you have made a commitment to say it. It is late, so in this case I say part of it, the opening prayers and a decade. Then the next day I finish that Rosary before saying the one for the new day. Sometimes it helps to break up the Rosary into decades during the day so you can still say a whole one, just not all at once. If the Rosary feels like a shackle, you are not saying it out of devotion and love. It should be something you look forward to. It will still be a struggle sometimes. Do your best. I struggle unless I pray with someone else--there are daily Rosaries on youtube, so you don't pray alone. That makes a tremendous difference. God bless you.
All about Intent. Grew up baptist and thats how it was all explqined to me. Accept his gift dont forget it

Thank you Fr. Mike for the video. However, I don’t see how, on the criteria and examples you present, the instance of failing to make it to Mass because of the car problems would be a sin. A sin. is not like in sports or life. Even if you don't get 'caught', a sin is a sin.
God might need us to make a few life mistakes to get us closer to God.
As a determinist, your actions are through no fault of your own.
Yes my Lord.
Yes to the Lord Jesus; in doing Novenas.
Luke 21:
29 Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know THAT THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NEAR. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
The disciples: they were transfigured; whenever we have a deep revelation we are passed from death unto life. This is also how the revelation of the novena came. That 9 days later they saw the Lord Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah; and this is the Mt transfiguration. When we pray; we are in company with angels and saints Mary, Joseph and Jesus; - like Jesus was; and you do not need to die: to be in contact with heavenly witnesses. The story of fig tree was taken from the story of the Songs of Solomon. The lover disappears. And we never know what happens next. Jesus fulfills what happens next; and he uses this very story from Solomon.
what's behind the accident? negligence, carelessness, thoughtlessness,
I see sin of acting on my own accord and many times without thought.
Hello Fr. Mike. I wonder how about we regularly attend mass on a Saturday (anticipated mass) and not on a Sunday? Hope you enlighten me about it. Thank you and God bless you.
Pls can we have a video about people who don't have vocations? people who for example were rejected from many communities or kicked out of seminary or rejected a lot in dating and now are too old to have a family? those people were picked last for God's teams or even not at all and are growing old alone with no place for them in the church
Your vocation then is to live a Single life. I wanted to be a religious sister, but they said no. I never met the right man to marry. The one vocation I didn't want was to be Single, but that's what He picked. Join the Legion of Mary, or Bible Study group, or help pick up dropped bulletins and Missals after Mass--you will be helping out. The church has a place for everyone, even if it can definitely feel lonely at times. God bless you.
I have been taught that we sin every day. Not sure how that is possible if we can't do it accidentily.
What happens to the people who don't know about God and/ or sin? We were raised in a country were there was no knowledge of God or religion.
It's a sin to say "on accident" instead of "by accident", so yes lol
This ^
He did it on purpose; since he talking about ignorance; so the typo is ignorance; to be forgiven; because: he made a typo; and he did not premeditate it. Ha
I have kind of a hard question, not sure if you will see this but: Thought out Human history we have had people and/or the church tell us what is and is not a sin. Some of the things that were labeled a sin just seem really really...really not a sin. For example, Timothy 2:11-15 where its considered sinful for a women to teach/preach. I can of course find more examples but I guess my question is between scripture, church and our own interpretations how do we really know whats right?
So, God might need us to sin, so we need his forgiveness.
It’s an interesting question. Obviously there can be no mortal sin without consent but, the Eastern Orthodox have an interesting prayer about all sins both “voluntary and involuntary”
I think this is an academic exercise for private theological debate. Just focus on God and ask the Holy Spirit for help and typically that should work I think
My guess is that you can’t sin if you don’t know what your doing is wrong? You do sin when you do know what your doing is wrong but you do it anyway?
So salvation can be gained thru ignorance?
Vos sunt faciens hoc SIC difficilis!
How?

I often miss mass by sleeping through my alarm. But some days I wake up but I am so exhausted and I am afraid to drive for fear I might wreck. Kin this case am I sinning by deciding to not go to mass even tho I possibly could but I believe there is a reasonable chance I could cause an accident.
Imho, no. But to be sure, ask your confessor.
It doesn't sound like a sin. I would contact a priest. Would you like me to pray for you? You sound exhausted and overworked.
Your brain is on overload; and you are serving your country; and the brain needs nutrients and rest to work properly. God is not a God of confusion. He sees it as NOT laziness. You were technically psychologically sick; and that is not something to play with; ESPECIALLY IF WE ARE DEALING WITH PTSD. God bless you for your service; peacemaker; and that is in the Bible; Jesus' own words: BLESSED ARE THE PEACE MAKERS.
I will put you on the prayer list; the Catachism In a Year; CIY.
The Devil is constantly trying to get you to sin, so it makes sense to tell people to STOP SINNING!!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yes we can - Priests can also use bad grammar BY PURPOSE!
To be honest I didn't get this example about not making it to the mass due to circumstances... Was this a sin or not? I am confused... I always thought it would not be one If I did all in my power to fullfil the obligation but still failed... Can someone clarify?
I find myself going through depression and im very negative lately i dont like people anymore or helping people im broken i find myself always saying and doing the wrong things and I've lost the friendship and respect of lots of females over the years i cant seem to do anything right in this life do you think my soul can be redeemed im baptized but I've been troubled for years
What about when you get sick? I have definately missed while I was sick.
Fr Mike, what if my family doesn't acknowledge the Catholic rule and just does not do bad. Just sin of omission... Do I sin if I tolerate them?
People ask what are the venial sins and what are the mortal sins. They want a list. How do you explain this to them?
Thanks Fr. Mike, I'm a bit confused about the car not starting example, you said it was still a sin, if the person had the intention and tryed to go to Mass (but was prevented by something outside of his control, the car not starting) how would it be a sin?
I believe it's called a material sin (i.e., the skipping of holy Mass), but not imputed as an actual sin. U can Google this and/or ask your confessor.
What about the car example? The car wouldn't work but you could check it earlier. Is it a venial sin, right?
Any guidance on wandering thoughts? For instance you are reading in your mind and come across a phrase and before you can stop, you read the phrase? And perhaps, the phrase gets stuck on unwillfull replay in your mind for a short time? You clearly don’t agree and denounce it through prayer?
I sin all the time. I can’t resist my sin stained heart but I repent.
❤️
This is very well spoken, except I don't get how it's a sin if you were to try to get to Mass but couldn't?
What about people saying that the Bible, religion and laws are created by man?
How can I ask Fr. Mike questions?
Fr Mike, I have sinned greatly, so much so to be excommunicated, but may I ask to come back home to the church? I'm so sick and tired of being without Him. I made a terrible mistake over 13 years ago because I was angry and said "God, if you're there please let us leave each other alone for a while". and I tossed a crucifix into the wind. I lost my way and spat in God's face, and I'm broken now. May I please recieve forgiveness for my stupidity and failure for blaspheming against The Lord? I failed in my weakness, and I am truly sorry!
Yes, you can have the excommunication lifted. Go to confession while you can. The devil will try to attack you to keep you out of the confessional at all costs. God bless and protect you. In Nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritu Sancti. +Amen
Did you literally toss a crucifix? Is that how you were excommunicated?
Don't be ashamed to go to confession. Priests have heard everything and won't be shocked.
@@IONov990 It was back in my army days, and I was greived that I couldn't go to afghanistan with my comrades and I took the crucifix I had around my dog tags and yelled out "you did this to me and lead me to this horrible spot in my life, for now let's just take a break from one another!" Then I threw that little cross away and never found it again. I feel so ashamed for those words because I know now that I was just angry and I felt hurt. I let my temper get the better of me.
@@nikopawlowic6557 I'm unsure if you are excommunicated for that. Ask a priest. I've done worse things out of anger and frustration towards God. Go to confession, confess with the intent to never commit this sin again.
What to do if you feel you haven't confessed some sin from the past, or not sure
You confessed them.
Confess it anyway. When I was a teenager, I was unnecessarily mean to my younger stepbrother once. I kept telling myself I was a teenager, let it go. I am not scrupulous but I knew it was wrong. It wasn't the act so much as it was having done it for the wrong reason, out of sheer pride. I knew it even then. I don't know if it was a sin but I felt regret whenever I thought about it. After 50 years, I confessed it and the guilt is gone.
If you accidentally hit someone with a vehicle and they don't survive... Is it a sin?
So Fr.Mike, the example you gave of the person missing Mass because he was prevented from going, you said was still a sin, but the other example of the person taking the $20 but didn’t know it belonged to another person, is not a sin, because he didn’t know.
I watched this video 3 times and I’m still confused. How is one example a sin and the other isn’t?????
Please; Fr.Mike or someone else please explain…..
Thanks
I’ve been told that attending our 4:00 mass on Saturday and not attending on Sunday fulfills my Sunday obligation. Is this true? 9:17
What does anyone think about the book Hebrew Bible: A Translation by Robert Alter? Is this translation ok for me as a Catholic?
If a person that attends a Catholic Church for years is legitimately unaware that it's a Mortal sin to intentionally skip Sunday Mass, wouldn't that be a Mortal sin for the Pastor of that Parish for intentionally not informing his parishioners of what constitutes Mortal sin?
In the example of Sun Mass and the car not starting how did that person choose to sin? Didn't you say that you have to choose to sin. He didn't choose to have his car noy start.
Honest question, I don't understand.
So my 9 months old son was sick two weeks ago and my wife and I stayed taking care of him instead of going to mass, even when we both wanted to go, but he would´ve got a fever since he was just recovering from one. Is that a sin? I´m really sorry, I have no problem going to confession for it but I would like to know
No, it's not a sin if your child required BOTH of you to take care of his fever. Usually, one parent stays with the sick child while the other can attend holy Mass.
❤❤
Is there a distinction between skipping Sunday mass and Saturday mass? Is it missing the Sunday service or is it not giving god his time during the week (not trying to make the argument that mass is the only time you give to God) that constitutes a sin?
Saturday Anticipated Mass is for people who can't make it to Sunday Mass. I don't know if it is also for people who want to watch all the sports games on Sunday, so they go to Mass on Saturday Anticipated instead. It's harder now, when there may only be two Sunday Masses, on Sunday. In the old days, we had the 7am, the 9:30am, and the 11am, plus the anticipated on Saturday at 5pm. We had 3 priests living at the Rectory. Now the nearest parish doesn't even have 1 priest, so that means some priest is going from parish to parish to get all the Masses said. That is so sad.
