Is My Confession Really a Secret? (The Seal of Confession Explained)

  • Today, Fr. Mike tells us about the story of the patron saint of confessors, St. John Nepomucene, who gave up his life because he refused to break something called the "seal of confession", which is a sacred duty of a priest to never reveal what is said in the confessional.
God himself established the priesthood as the mediators of reconciliation in the Gospel (John 2-:21-22). The Church takes this sacred responsibility so seriously, that any priest who breaks the seal of confession is automatically excommunicated.

I'm a fairly new Catholic, was baptized/confirmed 5 years ago from last Saturday night, Easter vigil mass of 2018. One of the things that most surprised me about becoming Catholic was just how powerful confession is. I have never left the confession booth with a dry eye. It is an incredibly special moment to hear the priest's words of absolution. But also important...learn to forgive yourself, just as Christ forgave you...don't hold on to the sins that He has paid the price for!

On the day after Easter, the pastor of a Roman Catholic parish in Maryland that was home to a dozen priests accused of sexual abuse will be saying the rosary for their victims.
The Rev. it is a moment that changed my life. Last year, June 24th on the feast day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, at the Divine Mercy hour 3:00 I went back to confession for the fist time in 12 years. Abandoned my mortal sins and never looked back. Partaking in the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist motivates me more than anything to not fall for the vices that plagued me for far too long. God bless you my brothers and sisters. If you are considering confession I strongly recommend it. I was dead, but now I live!

I'm an adult convert to the faith. I always get very nervous before confession, but once I go through all my sins, I feel better and feel contrite. The priests have always been compassionate, soft-spoken, encouraging, and reminding me of the love of Jesus. The last time I went, I literally felt a weight drop off of me at the point of absolution. What a blessing!
Remember that the priest wears the purple stole during Reconciliation because it is the symbol of priestly authority to forgive sins; he is acting as the mediator for Christ. (This is also true for exorcisms, BTW, for the same reason). Some priests have said that God has given them the Grace of forgetfulness, so they literally don't remember what they've heard.
Beware of the sin of pride, that tells you that you are so unique, that no one could have possibly committed the sins that you have. Naming the sin will free you from the devil.
A very powerful movie highlighting the sanctity of the seal of confession is "I Confess", with Montgomery Cliff (1953).

I have been to confession twice now. I was confirmed at Easter Vigil, and my sons and I met Jesus in the Eucharist together for the first time. They have been once. I would never even ask them what they confessed. Never. As for me, at my first reconciliation I confessed something that has troubled me since I was a young boy. I come from a tradition that calls everyone to public confession, and there is no way on earth I would have ever gone forward with this. I am so grateful. I told Father L I had told Jesus so many times I was sorry, and I knew he had forgiven me. Father L told me that though I knew I was forgiven, I had never heard and, and now I would. And I did. I am so thankful I found my way home. God bless you all.

Oh Fr. Mike, how I wish you were my confessor. I went to Confession a month ago, intending to make a complete, honest confession. My parish does not have a resident priest; however, we have a visiting priest who says Mass most Saturdays, which is usually when I attend Mass. He was hearing Confession that night. He berated and scolded me so badly in the midst of my confession that I couldn’t even continue. I’m so hurt and full of shame. I can’t even look that priest in the eye without crying.

I told my kids when they were nervous about confession- no one likes to go to confession to say what they have done wrong, but everyone loves forgiveness. I went astray as a teenager and came back before the birth of my 1st child. I said to the priest face to face, bless me father for I have sinned. It has been 25 years since my last confession. He smiled at me and said Well, welcome back! He administered the sacrament of anointing of the sick in 2014 when I was fighting breast cancer and he died at age 57 from throat cancer. I was so blessed to have him as a priest. It is never to late to come back to God.

I wish my parish priest would return to the old "kneel in a box" method. He holds confessions face to face, sitting in armchairs in his office. I hate it. I am talking to God. I need the good Father to be my confessor, not my therapist. I would be so much more comfortable kneeling in penitence, talking to the shadow behind the screen, and feeling much freer to say what I need to say.

Imagine going to confession every day. It sounds appealing to me since I am a lapsed Catholic who is "working backwards." It's been suggested I write every sin down (it's been 20 years since I had a decent confession) but some of the sins are so big I can barely get the words out without completely crying. I am confessing in stages. I'm not afraid of tough - confessing has been such an overwhelming experience ( in a good way, but it takes me awhile to digest/process the experience. I have also found that the line to confession in my church has been surprisingly long- like on a Thursday morning, ordinary time. My return to the church has been a life changing journey- there is so much to learn, I feel I am becoming a fundamentally different person- I never would have imagined the change in my spirit and soul 20 years ago

Just as sins are heard and forgiven during confession, the priests don't, can't and really don't want to remember anybody's sins. And considering how many confessions they may hear in any given period of time, even if he wanted to remember he probably couldn't.
Why would any priest want to? It would be like memorializing last week's trash that the garbage truck hauled away.

Thank you Fr. Mike for your continued catechism in a worldwide platform and I hope more and more people listen and follow. It would truly be unfortunate if the Seal of Confession becomes a "turn off" to some. Following God, obeying His Commandments, accepting His ONE, True, Holy, Apostolic Church - its teachings, dogmas/magisteriun is not about what suits man's likings, what one can cherry-pick from. It is either you accept the Catholic faith and its interpretation of God's will and you live by it or you don't. It's not an injustice not to reveal the sins, on the contrary, it is more of an injustice to reveal it because a person came to you in confidence and confessed their sins to you (Jesus personified) and to you alone. It would be a betrayal of trust to break the seal. Plus we all are sinners. Didn't Jesus asked if anyone is without sin, let them cast the first stone? Confession is a sacrament of MERCY AND FORGIVENESS not a sacrament of JUDGMENT AND CONDEMNATION. What happens in Confessions is between you and God. It doesn't make sense anybody else should be told what was said in Confession.

I find that confession shines a light down into the dark places. It is just too easy for the accuser, the evil one to hold you hostage to your sins you hide, which leaves you vulnerable to more errors, but to go confession, to say it out loud, to give it to God, to drag that sin out into the light of Christ, and reveal it, dissipates its dark power in the light of the Trinity. It is also important to know we need to keep our hearts neat and tidy, so we go with clean heart to mass and communion. I am very shy, but it is worth it to go to confession.

Another story I love is how Saint Gerard Majella is the patron of a good confession (even though he was a lay brother and not a priest), During one of his own confessions he reminded the priest of a past sin he (the priest) had forgotten to confess.

The best three things for me about the practice of my faith are: Confession; Eucharist; and Adoration. How one can live as a serious Christian, truly aspiring to holiness, yet lack those three sources of grace for the strength needed in this lifelong battle, that is something I cannot imagine. I know I couldn't do it.

The confessional door is like that narrow door or gate that few have the strength to enter by. It leads to the Eucharistic Feast via way of the state of grace. Those who don't enter it go by the wide way which leads to destruction and condemnation.

On the day after Easter, the pastor of a Roman Catholic parish in Maryland that was home to a dozen priests accused of sexual abuse will be saying the rosary for their victims.
The Rev. Santhosh George made the announcement on the homepage of the St. Mark Church in Catonsville on Thursday, the day after that the state’s top prosecutor accused the Archdiocese of Baltimore of covering up the sexual abuse of more than 600 children for over a half-century. yeah such a wonderful cult!

Thank you Fr. Mike! I am a cradle Catholic and understand everything you expressed in this video quite well! I have a slightly controversial question about confession involving a specific scenario: what if a child reveals that they are being abused during their confession? How would you manage this situation and what does the church say?

    • @josephcorrigan7239
      @josephcorrigan7239 Рік тому

I see you have been waiting two weeks for an answer. I will do my best to give you an answer. I am not a priest, and do not know how such a situation would be handled, but I think that the priest would counsel the child to tell another adult (whom they trust) what is happening to them, and to ask that adult for help.
Also, since it is not the child's own sin that he or she is confessing, the priest MAY (I don't know) not be bound by the seal.
      I present you another scenario:
What if the child is being abused by a father, who enters the confessional right after the child, and the father confesses that he has been abusing his son or daughter? I would expect the priest to offer the Rite of Absolution, but also to counsel that parent to seek professional help to stop himself from committing further abuse.

@@ezragonzalez8936 I'll be praying for you. My heart breaks for the people you're speaking of, but it also doesn't help to conflate two completely different issues. What those priests did was horribly wrong. But at the same time, it is only through the example of Christ that we can so definitively say how wicked what they did is. Luke 17:2 "It would be better for him (the person doing evil to a child) if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, rather than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble." It is only in the Christian world that we condemn these monsters. Too often throughout other cultures even today that sort of thing is permitted.

Confessions for me were always public until I confessed to a priest. I love Jesus so much you have to share everything to everyone. Even your imperfections. Not purposely to keep being imperfect but yes sins are what make us imperfect. And I'm happy I have not sinned since Ash Wednesday February 22 2023. Sadly a friend of mine had to die for my sins too. So I get that truly and this is why I am trying to avoid all sins since then.

I am so, so thankful that I finally went to confession in 2021 and 2022. I have three bi, big or should I say huge, huge dealy sins. The first one was in March of 1997, the second was was in March of 1999, the third one was in May of 2003. Here is the thing..... I did not even know that they were deadly sins. I just thought that is normal. A normal thing to do. Little did I know that is the worse sins of my life. I was partially blind. Now, I realized that this 3 sins are against God. Thank God for the confessional. My Confessor heard my two sins. The following year he heard my third deadly sin which I still did not know is a sin. Once, I found out that I have sinned against God Laws and Commandments. Thank God that now I can see clearly the RAW UNFILTERED TRUTH. Unofortunately we grow in a godless society who thinks that abortion is normal, masectomy , sterelization, fornication is okay. Praise The Lord O My Soul. Praise The Lord O My Soul.
Thank you Father Mike Schmitz and Ascension Press. God bless you all. ( Friday April 14, 2023 ).

Also making sure that people waiting in line are not so close to the confessional because they're usually very echoey and sometimes the confessor or some penitent speak too loud or the penitent may sometimes be asked to speak up. Making sure the secrecy is protected from outsiders .

    1. Is the forgiveness of sins in the absolution contingent upon the completion of the penance?

Monsignor de Segur has a small book about confession where he tells something very interesting: during the french revolution, many priests abandoned faith. Some of them committed terrible sins, even delivering some of their own sheep to be beheaded by the authorities. But there was not one single case of a priest breaking the seal of confession. One priest rejected his faith and was living together with a woman, and she asked him one day to reveal things he heard in confession. He not only didn't do it, but he also got really mad.
