thank you for sharing your experience in your first ever marathon. Hope I can do as well as you on first marathon targeting 2nd half next year. I really like your approach to running to just keep it simple. I also try to be simple and not very technical on my trainings. keep it up!
I really, really enjoyed this Patrick. I’d love to hear more stories about your races - it would be great to hear about your London Marathon for example. I’m intrigued to know if you had that gel or just carried it in your hand for 26.2 miles?! 😂
@@patrickmartinrunning That's so good to hear, I was able to finish a PB 1:40 half marathon whilst 12h fasted recently, and I was unsure if I could do the same in a full marathon. This gives me hope!
You are such an inspiration and I love your videos. After watching one of your videos, I always feel motivated to work just a little bit harder on my next run. 😀
The ruthless efficiency & consistency of those twice daily runs is something to behold. Not sure how quickly you buit up to that but your body must be very resilient. What does your nutrition look like? I imagine your body needed a lot of calories to sustain those 150km weeks.
Thank you Patrick for sharing your stories! How do you explain that you were able to run a marathon that fast with no carbs? What about water? There is something very intriguing with the way you perform 😅
I was just uses to not needing to take on carbs so my body had adapted to that. I didn't take on water either no. In a hot race I couldn't do that though.
Patrick I poked around your Strava and one thing I noticed is early on you had quite a high HR while running fairly fast and being consistent at this speed even though it looks like it was hard on you. Did you decide you wanted to run fast and decided to ignore HR and just let it get easier over time. Which is mostly opposite they teach these days… eg 80/20 method. If so this seemed to work for you brilliantly. Results don’t lie 😊
Thank you and no that wasn't a great idea. It was the only time in the week I could get the track run in. I wouldn't do that again. I needed more recovery time after the intervals ideally.
I guess you are just training like the kenyan boys running twice a day to and from school. But I wonder if you are especially gifted because I'm not sure many runners would have the same results doing your training.
@ he isn't saying the truth, if you check is strava you'll see that some of the first runs are already 4min/km at 140 heart rate. that's just not possible for a beginner runner, especially not in his late 30s
Thanks for the comment. Firstly, those heart rates are from a wrist strap which are not accurate, I have no idea what my actual heart rate was then. And secondly I may have just started running, but that doesn't mean I wasn't fit. I played other sports and was in good shape, I just didn't run. I was also running at my max on each run because I didn't understand how to train properly, which was a mistake of mine in those days.
You might be the only person ever to run under 2:30 in thier first marathon and aged over 40....incredible Patrick.
Was about to write the same!.its an incredible story
Your videos have helped me so much. I recently ran the Yorkshire Marathon and really enjoyed it.

Great video Patrick, very helpful to see your breakdown consistency on Strava
amazing story, so humble, youre an incredible runner
That is a great story. Thanks for sharing. Miles make champions!
Inspiring looking forward to seeing your next marathon

Thank you! No I didn't take the gel. I never have in a marathon. I realised that worked for me, my body had adapted to not needing the carbs.

Yes exactly, I just ran all out hard all the time at the beginning! I wouldn't do that now though. It did get results, but it's hard on the body.

Great story and loved looking at your weekly build up. I was surprised that your long run was the day after your intervals. Do you still do that?

Of course hes gifted...like are you fucking well. What percentage of the population of UK can enter their very 1st marathon and finish 3rd?!!
Have you tried his methods? I find running without eating to be a lot easier, which he seems to do as well for example.
I think you are one in a thousand. No matter how i try it i will not ever achieve your result
so just like everyone else: by running 150k+ weeks for years prior to attempting a marathon
@@TBasianeyes he didn’t do it for years.
