- Complete Academy Awards Best Actor segment. Casey Affleck gives acceptance speech after winning the Oscar (2:39) for his performance in Manchester by the Sea at the 89th annual star-studded event on February 26, 2017 at Dolby Theater, Hollywood, CA.
The actor was nominated alongside Hacksaw Ridge's Andrew Garfield, La La Land's Ryan Gosling, Captain Fantastic's Viggo Mortenson and Fences' Denzel Washington in the category Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Manchester by the sea broke my heart...
Iam oblivious then you ain't seen shit yet
Iam oblivious ..... broke my virginity. thanks Affleck
Shit like what? How is accidentally burning your whole family and trying to get over it not heartbreaking?
love those kinda movies.... broke mine too....
everybody that knows his other work?
His performance was great... really deep and moving. Well deserved.
that's true your grace
Aragon will get this oscar one day.
Highran56 yea hopefully he will, he has been in the game many years, and gave a great performance in Captain Fantastic!
He was amazing in Captain Fantastic, one day I hope he'll get that Oscar. Underrated actor
Watch him in "The Road". Be tripped out by his presence. Thank me later.
He should have got one for Eastern Promises
Sure, but also for fighting naked with another dude. Wait, that means Sasha Baron Cohen should have got one as well!
If you could see Affleck's performance in Manchester By the Sea, especially the police station scene and every fight scene he had, its like so real. In the movie, he was so devastated and every scene seemed so real. He deserved this award. And its like he still hasn't got the chance to shut off the character in him, the way he looks now, the way his facial expression. A great method actor.
100% agree, I was thinking from the begining of the film why the hell is he soo upset and everything till the house scene appeared and I knew at that point...
Yes, profoundly locked in. His inner process so authentic. No feeling he is “acting.” A master class.
Am I like the only one who hoped so much that Andrew Garfield would've won? Like he was so incredible, nothing against Affleck of course, but he deserved it too, Denzel was a bit over the top, and man he looked pissed af here
Denzel thought he should have won but it was the correct envelope.
Victor Ferger Andrew is young, and he has a long way to go and if you See his reaction, he was rooting for Casey all along. Watch recent Interviews with him, he very sweetly says that he's just happy and proud to be in the company of actors like these. Being recognized for your work and being nomineed (no way I spelled this correctly I apologize) to that award is a HUGE respect and it is a huge leap forward especially to the young actors like Andrew and Lucas Hedges. Trust me, no one had left the red carpet unhappy. No one.
Yes, you're probably right, I just thought that he was amazing.
But there are a few things that bugged me, first of all Suicide Squad isn't allowed to win an Oscar, that's a disgrace for them, secondly Doctor Strange or at least Rogue One should've won Best Visuals instead of freaking Jungle Book (!), and lastly and probably most importantly Kubo and the Two Strings should've gotten Best Animated Feature like so hard! Zootopia is a nice film overall, yes, but Kubo is soo good and there went so extremely much effort in it, it's unbelievable, have you seen the behind the scenes videos? It's mindblowing.
I was hoping for Andrew, but then I saw 'Manchester by the sea' and I've changed my mind.... Casey was AMAZING! Well deserved!
I can't tell that because I haven't seen Manchester yet... Shame on my butt, I know
he deserve it... Manchester by the sea is the most beautiful movie...about contemplation
IDEM
Aminingrum Amin no it doesn't...was nothing special
livio grimaldi i agree, Manchester was a slow paced movie with no real meaty parts for the audience to chew on, it was just boring
I beg to differ, he was just acting himself.. Look at the crowd reaction when he won
Why would you assumed she doesnt seen much? I have seen Tarkovsky, Kiarostami, Bergman, Haneke, Kar Wai, Malick etc. And still think Manchester By The Sea is a great movie about contemplation.
Spare a thought for Andrew Garfield, losing an Oscar the same night your ex wins one. Ouch.
Who's his ex?
Chris K Emma stone
Emma Stone dated Casey?
thekidd7 still got a nomination
I would like to think that he’s happy for all the winners.
Casey Affleck deserved it. He is a big example of an actor who worked so hard patiently and silently until pay off day..
Really, really not
Also sexually harrassed 2 filmmakers which detracts from the nice stuff
@@stayforever6575 soy much
man, i wish Andrew Garfield won the Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge he was so good in that movie
Yes yes yes yes!
He was fantastic in that movie, but I think casey Affleck deserved it, his performance in Machester By the Sea gave me chills
Casey affleck incredibly deserved it
It was either Casey or Denz. They gave the best performances but Casey just shaded it.
Andrew garfield the best ❤️❤️❤️❤️🥺
"Ben, I love you. You ain't heavy."
Nah, Andrew Garfield all the way!
And then Ben getting all emotional - tore me up
I got 2 Oscars
BEN AFFLECK
@@CarlosPerez-sc6mg and neither of them is for acting. Shows he’s got more talents than just acting though.
@@Jared_Wignall BEST PICTURE for Argo ( DGA Director win) rob nomination directing for Argo and OSCAR for Best Original Screenplay for Will Hunting.Come on!
One of the greatest performance of the decade. The way he embodies this character is breathtaking.
Sexual assault or not. Being Black or White. None of that matters. What matters was the performance. This is Casey Afflecks first nomination and win and it was well deserved for the ACTING. Not what is being considered outside of the acting career. Denzel is always great. He's won 2 times and has had several nominations. So lets keep the peace and not make this a race issue and let it be for what it was, which was for best actor. Not "best actor that deserves a win because of race".
blablabla1196 second nomination
blablabla1196 well said
APLAUSE.... CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP... Im so happy for your words...
It matters. You damn fool.
Its the oscars mammut tutt..
Nothing more
Good that Casey Affleck nabbed the Oscars because he deserved it 100%. Aside from the well-written script, his sensitive acting was the film's driving force, and he did it in a most convincing way that I'm sure nobody who watched the film was spared from a certain degree of emotional devastation from those heartbreaking scenes. Bravo!
This movie is a flatout masterpiece. How you react to and dwell on the events and the character interactions will tell you a lot about how highly evolved you are as a human being or how much more work you have do to get to another level.. The director and every actor involved are very gifted, very special people. Congratulations.
this guys performance was so out of this planet I cried when I seen the video clip before clicking on it I cried knowing I was about to watch his speech here , this guys acting is one of a kind. Has more talent than he even knows.
Ever seen out of the furnace?
@@PNL_King that movie was so depressing, very good though
Listen to his podcast with Marc Maron on UA-cam. I think you'll like it.
@@sugarpie9492 Thanks so much.
I couldn’t watch the clip! I remember this scene in the movie and I was destroyed…my God it was so real life
Well Washington looked fucking pissed.
lol true, fuck him
Watch as Casey's name is announced, Denzel instantly applauds enthusiastically. Don't know what you're talking about.
3:08 Washington stands up to applaud him.
munichgirl80 and 3:36 looked pissed
actually he looked like that most of the night..just his face
Just came to see Brie's unsatisfied face. Goddess.
me too!
I don't think you know what that word means because there's no context for it in this conversation.
Brie Larson, the one who presented the award and Oscar winner for Best Actress last year
Same.
Captain Marvel
Incredible performance by Casey. One of the most touching acting performances I've witnessed in a long time.
really, he deserve it. Nobody can deny
A black man should have won because, y'know, black.
How is that relevant to what he said?
I can deny xD...I believe denzel was better. Bu he already has 2 ..who cares
For you is terrible, not for thousands of people...
So happy for him. I've been rooting for this guy ever since I saw him in Jesse James.
exactly, he'll always be the coward Robert Ford to me, great actor
Irrational Man A
I didn't see Jesse James, but I truly loved his acting in Gone Baby Gone.
1. Casey Affleck
2. Viggo Mortensen
3. Andrew Garfield
4. Denzel Washington
5. Ryan Gosling
By the way, Gosling shouldn't even have been nominated. Joel Edgerton for Loving or Jake Gyllenhaal for Nocturnal Animals deserved more.
would like to replace denzel and ryan with them both.
Bruno Simões tom hanks for sully
Ryan was absolutely amazing he did an incredible job so I think he deserved to be there
For those who are saying that denzel washington should won and that the oscars gave it casey affleck because he is white think again. Look how long it took leonardo dicaprio to finally win a Oscar. Clearly he should have won much earlier in his acting career. This has noting to do with being white or black. At the end of the day Casey Affleck clearly deserved the award.
Agree. Denzel overacted in Fences. Casey was better.
Besides, Denzel allready has 2 Oscars. Its not like he needed the win.
To be honest, the only nominated role Leo deserved to win was Wolf of Wall Street. Nothing more. His win for The Revenant was compensatiion for 2013.
lombard605 to be honest you dont know what you are talking about
You think ? Or you're just one of those online zombies who think that he deserved Oscar for every performance (lol) ? Dude, my advice to you is to start watching movies outside Nolan-Tarantino-Scorsese-DiCaprio microcosm and you'll discover some truly great performances, much more deserving of acclaim than DiCaprio. He is consistent but not great. I've watched all his movies since 1993 and never got the impression" Wow, this is some great, all-time acting".
Viggo
nope
vHakii yep
Viggo whaaaaaaat
i hope he wins next time
Aragon!
I would have been happy for Garfield too.. but Affleck was downright perfect and the movie was amazing.
So valid
He really did deserve it .What an incredible performance.I was rooting for him since i saw the movie.
Not me. He did only ONE facial impression. ONE! He should have won the oscar for his role as Robert Ford, but not this one.
He only had one facial expression because he played a guy whose life was running on autopilot with no rhyme or reason...
Bill D LMAO he doesnt
Comeon, are u serious!
He didn't do anything. thats how he act
And live all the same personality.
He can't improvise any different roles .
Hes can only play one character that's all.
Didn't deserve it and all other nominate sucks too.
Do u guys have any idea what vulnerable acting is?
Well, to see Ben so proud of his brother actually brings tears to my eyes ... I guess Casey deserves the oscar as his performance was pretty outstanding, but so was Andi Garfield's and I did hope for him to be winning the award ... and to those who can`t understand that Denzil seemed pissed, I guess he has a point, he was reaching for his third award and in my opinion it's absolutely ok, when someone's upset, when he isn't able to reach his goal. We're all humans and we all have our dreams, right?
But he already won for Training Day didn't he?
yes he did
I think Denzel is not pissed but sad because Bill Paxton his friend died.
Garfield and Affeck were so damn good. Could have went either way
he's not forget about Ben this time 😆
Desmanian Vi watched for that 😃
Angie me too
Angie me tooo😂
Matt Damon was jumping for joy when Casey won! Love it! he soo lovelyyyy
Should have been Hacksaw ridge Andrew. He did amazing for the role. He spoke just like the real Desmond Doss
So glad they didn't try to do a minority quota on this. Affleck deserved this award.
Not on this particular award at least, can't say the same about the others!
Did you even see Moonlight or Fences to know? This is one of the few academies where the right people got the oscars, regardless of their race, for brilliant acting and film making. It wasn't white washed and there were no token awards. Respect the art and talent of these people.
fuck you talking about minority quota-so when white people win awards its cus of their talent but when black people win them its because of filling up a quota?
+Lara R
It's no coincidence that last year the black community were in a sulk because of the lack of non white nominees. So the academy have over compensated this year. As everyone knew they would.
they got nominated again this year after whining crying and asking for nominations for black actors in last 2 years
but they said they were there not because of the protests lol
no hispanic actors got nominated but black community wont care
well, at least they got this one right....
The Ferryman oh bcz a white man won? 😂
damn, you're racist...
Whatever :D i know i'm not ;)
well, it's like nobody thinking of oneself as being dumb, isn't it...?
The Ferryman 😂whatever, bye
Would've loved to see Andrew Garfield win - Peter and Gwen on the same night :)
He deserved it, so much - His role, and the movie in general, was so heartbreaking that I still think about it constantly. Beautiful film really.
Although If Andrew Garfield or Viggo Mortensen had won I also wouldn't have minded, great performances as well. Andrew was amazing in Hacksaw Ridge, showed what a truly great talent he is. Viggo ( I fucking love Viggo) was also amazing in Captain Fantastic..honestly a lot of great talent this year
*Unpopular opinion*: Denzel Washington is a great actor but I think his performance in Fences was a bit over the top. don't kill me please
Completely agree. Washington is totally over the top in Fences.
I Watched this movie 4 times now. his performance was outstanding. something about that character who is incapable of expressing his feelings and just trying to get by with what life thrown at him is so well played by him. Oscar well well deserved.
He was so good in this he should have got two Oscars.A wonderful performance.Well done Casey.
Ben was so emotional and proud.
This is bg brother goals.
by the way a very very very deserved win for Casey.
Viggo gets my vote, but that doesn't take away anything from Affleck's great performance.. as a matter of fact, everyone here is great in there own way. The best actor race was ridiculously strong this time.
Am I the only who doesn't give a shit about Brie Larson's reaction?
Denzel already got 2 Oscars and Casey deserved this! End of story!
Aron Tamás she reacted like this because of the rape accusations against Casey
Kylian Mbappé No one ever accused Casey Affleck of rape. A civil lawsuit was filed against him by 2 women who worked on his mockumentary with Joaquin Phoenix, I'm Still Here. They claimed they were not paid enough money and added on complaints of sexual harrasment and an unprofessional work environment. Casey denied all claims and was going to file a countersuit, but both sides decided it was in their best interest to come to a settlement, since this was mostly a monetary dispute, anyway. Both sides also agreed to not speak about the details of the lawsuit.
Do your research before making false claims about people. You never know who you could hurt. Situations such as these are not always as black and white as people would like to make them seem nowadays. Its best not to make assumptions about anything. All Brie Larson showed by not clapping for Casey's much deserved win is how self-righteous she is.
Brie Larson fucking boring
Manchester by the Sea was simply phenomenal and he deserves this.
He's incredible in Manchester by the Sea, this is well deserved. Also I love how emotional, proud and happy Ben looked at that moment.
An amazing actor and well deserved
He was never found guilty. It's easy to speculate with e a settlement outside of court, but he could've done that just so his name would no longer be dragged through the mud... as part of the deal, neither party can talk about it anymore, so he can't defend himself, but they also can't slander him.... we'll never know the real details, but shouldn't assume he's guilty just because the press are having a field day with it.
"But he's white, straight and male so he is guilty after seven years"
Its so easy to not be guilty when you have money and connections...
Not all but those who are accused can easily be found not guilty becuse of their money...Its like politicians they steal but you will NEVER prove it cause they control everything. Wake up kid you are not living in wonderland!
the only ones who thinks that he is guilty are the mad feminists, if he was part of a minority no one would assume anything lmao
I have always wondered about the claims. One of the women said she woke up to find him in her bed! Why did she wait so long and go to a civil court and sue for money? If I woke up to find a man in my bed that I had not invited i'd be calling the cops immediatley. Not saying that shes lying but it is weird.
I know it was an ensemble cast, but Viggo Mortensen should've also been nominated for Lord of the Rings. He was phemonenol as Aragorn. A very dedicated actor. I've not been able to see Manchester By the Sea yet, but congratulations to Casey.
Sincere speech.
And Captain Fantastic is such an outstanding movie! Thank you, Viggo, for bringing this role to life!
Because of the way Brie Larson treated Casey here she's now experienced a backlash herself.
it's called karma.
Be nice to people.
Treat people how you wanna be treated.
What did she do?
Oh yeah let’s call the unwarranted hate on Brie Larson karma because she hated on a sexual harasser as she should. You’re fucking disgusting
a well deserved Oscar, amazing performance. just gut wrenching. his sadness follows me to this day but in words he never expressed it throughout the movie. just with his eyes. The scene at the police station will haunt me forever.
We've already seen a performance like Denzel's 100 times, Casey definitely deserved it.
Nah, Garfield all the way
Why are so few people not happy for casey
No way. Casey performance was so "Kristen Stewart" feelings, boring.
The problem for Denzel is that he is such a great actor who has given so many magnificent performances that we just take him for granted. That being said, Casey deserved Best Actor that year.
@@Saintinthecity-wh9nl 100% agreed
This guy is a genius... I saw his many interview and speech.. he is very cool and presentable..
there's hope for the human race. I think I was more nervous than the crew. But Casey was the only one who should have won in my opinion, and the fact that a small, simple, humble indi film with a fairly low budget and two Alexas won best original screenplay actually means more that winning per say, it says something about the path being drawn behind the scenes right now, and the new cinema that is still to come. We had a very tough couple of years in terms of the industry but there can be miracles when you believe, and what happened tonight proves it. I'm glad.
Pretty damn sure Captain Fantastic have a similar budget as well, not to mention Viggo Mortensic gave one hell of a performance (I'm not a fans of him btw). Not to take anything from Casey, but to say he's the only one who should've won is a stretch... And yeah, I watched both film and I honestly think Viggo gave a better performance...
agreed. and why I'm happy moonlight won. shows that if people love a film enough it will get recognised on a bigger circuit and it will snowball. exactly like Manchester. really well deserved, I've been an admirer of Casey's work for a while. glad he got it for his best film
ive watched both manchaster and captain, casey is better by far
but if casey did not win, it'd go to viggo
casey>>>>>>>>>>>>viggo>>>>andrew>>>denzel>ryan
I'm glad too. Manchester by the Sea is the sort of film I like, one's that explore humanity and relationships. I hate all the superhero crap that gross a billion every year with the same boring, cliched storylines. If it wasn't for Casey winning the Brits/Golden Globes/Oscars I wouldn't have even known about this film. Now comes the trouble of trying to find similar films..
loved the way Ben hugged Casey! at the end Ben had tears in his eyes... that's brothers love!
Andrew Garfield deserves it more
As Affleck walks off the stage Brie Larson re-checks the envelope: "Wait a minute"......
The winner is Andrew Garfield!
I love Brie reaction! She is right.
Andrew should've got it
I loved that he hugged the other girl on stage. He's so awkward like us lol
Casey deserved it!
A day will come where the hearts of men will rejoice in the award Mortensen will recieve... but today is not that day
I have seen Manchester by the Sea. His performance brokes my heart. It was handled with subtlety yet magnificent
Casey is the kind of scary good actor is hard to get to that level of skill
Casey Affleck in Jesse James, Out of the Furnace, hell even in his little role in Interstellar. I liked him in Triple 9 but that was sort of typecast.
Plain and simple, he's an amazing actor, about time he got mainstream recognition.
Very well deserved..So happy
LOL Brie Larson also announced him as the winner at the Golden Globes and she had the exact same disappointed expression !
I think Brie generally has a neutral expression. She does not seemed the type to be too emotional even if she was happy.
Of course. She's a woman who has won the Best Actress award as an abuse victim and here she's being forced to deliever the award to an abuser.
Yeah, but she's not a real abuse victim and that isn't her only role so...
Good old "body lecture" that feminist do...
Wow I didn't think it that way. So true
He’s damn lucky the MeToo movement didn’t start up a year earlier or else he wouldn’t even have been nominated!
Explain please
@@kenhartnett307 “Me Too” is a societal initiative which called for perpetrators of sexual misconduct to be brought to justice and has resulted in many big names to fall victim to “Cancel Culture”. Casey Affleck was accused by multiple women who worked with him on set in the past, however he settled with them out of court.
Ah Casey, you were so awesome in that movie, i can't begin to tell you how much i loved that movie !!! you are the best !!!
Nah, Andrew Garfield all the way!
I love the fact that the first person to run and hug Casey was Ben
Lol. Aragon why you holding the Escudo of San Lorenzo de Almagro? Sad you didn't win. As a fellow Boedo native saludos.
One of the finest roles I've seen acted.
Bro he went up against 3 amazing actors this movie deserve more ! Man I can’t believe it made me and my mother cry !
Still can't believe that Denzel Washington didn't get this award. Powerful and amazing performance in Fences.
I hoped on Andrew Garfield because Hacksaw Ridge is the best movie I have ever seen, but Casey deserved it aswell.
I cry during the investigation scene of Casey Affleck. Well deserved.
The sour look on Washington’s face never gets old lol.
I'm so happy Reynolds didn't win the oscar.
In 2024 Oscars, Ryan Gosling and Casey Affleck will be competing against each other again for Barbie and Dreamin Wild
That was some fierce competition, but Casey deserved it. That performance was heartbreaking.
That moment when Matt Damon jumped in joy when Casey won .lovely!
he is so humble. totally deserved it!
Brie Larson did not clap and i dont blame her
I don't blame her, I blame liberal culture.
Well deserved the prize casey affleck and I saw the movie and his performance is excellent and when they named it I was so excited but more excited that I was ben affleck his brother who was so proud that he was his brother who was winning and almost cried Casey affleck also dedicated his speech to matt damon because thanks to matt damon he had that role that would make him win the long awaited oscar
man i thought Denzel should had won. smh
NOPE casey did hell of a job
Dude, are you kidding? I fucking bawled my eyes out in Manchester By the Sea
Denzil already had an oscar. It's not just performance.
Denzel has won and been more times to the oscars than all nominated in that category
Denzel overacted like he was still in a play. Casey had the better performance.
YOU DESERVE IT the little brother follows the big brother.
WELL DONE.
I thought he should have won for the Assassination of Jesse James so I need to see this movie.
btp248 he’s genius in both
I don’t know if he should’ve won for Jesse James. Javier bardem was incredible in no country.
I love how she wasn't clapping😊 and her stone face is just priceless)
Deserved Best Actor over anyone that year. His performance was spellbinding and the fact that him and his brother went to my high school has nothing to do with it. Of course, Walter Brennan and the Marathon Bomber did too!
Casey did deserve it of course..amazing performance..but i just feel so bad for Viggo..he was brilliant! :(
Casey literally won everything including about every critics award and TV award this season (the oscar is the 42nd one), the only two he didn't win are LAFCA (he was the runner-up to Adam Driver), and SAG to Denzel. so if anything he was robbed at the SAG.
One of my top 3 performances of the decade
This has to go down as one of the best line up of actors for this award, ever…
Affleck is a giant. One of best performances I've ever seen.
better than Ben Affleck and a lot!!
Controversy aside, Casey Affleck gave the best performance and i'm certain that most who think's Denzel should've won didn't see Manchester by the Sea.
all these performances were so good. I think casey was the best of them, but damn this was hard to decide, respect to all those great actors
One of the most real feeling movies I’ve ever seen. Casey is so cool too haha seems like the chillest dude ever
*Viggo Mortensen*
best performance by an actor the last 10 years
Kostas Pantazis of all time
The fine line between 'accused' and 'convicted' that everybody seem to forget.
He is an amazing actor. The Killer Inside Me, Gone Baby Gone and this !
Andrew garfield in hacksaw was amazing
what did he say ? Ben I love u you and ...?
Romina he said "you ain't heavy" as in the song lyric "he ain't heavy, he's my brother"
Thanks James, this is why i was scrolling down endlessly
thank you! !
Actually, Brie Larson made of fool of herself by not applauding Affleck’s win.Had she felt so strongly, she should have asked to present a different category!
