DIY Bathroom Remodel for my Mother In Law | Home DIY

- I remodeled a bathroom for my Mother In Law over the holidays. In this video are a few things to consider before remodeling a bathroom, this remodel was a bit more complicated than most but all of these concepts apply to any bathroom remodel. I framed a wall, laid tile for the first time, and was able to work with Delta Upstile system to make an amazing shower alcove with barn door hardware. Not too shabby for my first time pulling a bathroom back to the studs and bringing it back to life. I might do this more often.
Special thanks to The Home Depot and Delta and their UpStile system for sponsoring this build. Check out the full build article on Home Depot's Blog at the link below for all of the materials and more details about the remodel.

those tile cuts were all off angle
???
Wood.Work.LIFE. Top and bottom of the glass accent tile
Yeah I couldnt help but cringe seeing the glass tile. Everything else looks great though
that glass tile jacked up lol
I agree
Very sweet to look out for your mother in law. Great job looks amazing
betzhecrodriguez he tapped it 👌🏼
All I have to say is WOW!!!!!!!!
Thanks I think?
@@WoodWorkLIFE No it's the worst job ever!!!! I'm sorry...
Amazing job thanks for sharing
Great job! Clean, classic, and everything one needs
5:29 God I felt like I was gonna lose a finger just watching that.
Nice job
Quickblood1 Especially as you should never use gloves when using a saw like that. Those thin one time latex gloves might be fine though.
Beautiful job.
That was an awesome gift! Nice to show some some of the easier ways of doing things ( i.e. surround rather than tilting the whole thing, purchased cabinet instead of building your own). It makes a project like this more approachable.
Ya, you've gotta size a project and figure out what you can do with the timeframe sometimes.
Great job Rick! 😍👍🏻🚿🛁🚽👊🏻
With those 2ft you gained flipping the tub, you could've installed/made recessed shelving for shampoos and what not. Maybe even in a panoramic style or even vertical shelving from top to bottom. It turned out really nice though. I think that's the only thing I would've added/modified
Ya with the tub system that isn't really possible. I will probably come back and add a line closet or something.
Amazing remodel and a great way to give back. You rock!!!!!
She always has done so much for me
Good job love the teal tile
Thanks, I dig it too. Wish the cuts would've come out cleaner.
Wow this is beautiful love the flooring
Thanks!
Nice job
World’s best son-in-law award goes to you - great video, awesome content👍
Awe shucks
So sweet you did this for your mother in law !
She loves it
Awesome job taking care of Grandma with the remodel!
Happy Nana happy ...I thought that was going somewhere :)
Looks wonderful! The Star Wars undies gave me a giggle 😊
I noticed it too!
Awesome job 👍 .. good on you for thinking of your mother in law.
She moved in with us shortly after, but it helped sell the house I am sure.
First time watching one of your videos... I think you did a great job. You make excellent use of the time and resources allotted and the bathroom looks so fresh and modern! I wish I had any sort of DIY skills and could tackle some projects like this in my own home but until then, UA-cam!
It's easy! All tasks are just a series of sub tasks. Don't think of it as remodeling a bathroom, think of it as (tearing down a bathroom [fun], patching drywall [easy], laying down floor [fun new skill to learn], picking out appliances [that's basically just shopping], installing appliance [basically assembling Ikea furniture], and then hiring professionals for any of the "skill" work you don't want to tackle (electrical, plumbing...) and that is basically just meeting new people and making new friends. I always try to learn at least one new skill in each project, after a bunch if projects, that's a TON of skills.
I know what you mean. I once had a home. Because my husband wasn't too skillful, we made a chaotic!! We sold the house.
I saw some mistakes. But I like the overall look. Congrats.
Thanks bud, I am sure I made some mistakes. I have seen pro bathrooms with mistakes. I am just glad it is cohesive and a monstrous upgrade on the old space.
That looks fantastic, Rick! Really nice job with those teal tiles...adds a nice touch of color.
Ya, I was trying to make it feel a little tropical rather than the Stark white that has become popular.
Folks are so nasty in these comments. It looks beautiful.
Thanks Simone. I never take it personally. Some people just have hate in them.
What did you do with the spacers showing under the toilet? Nice finish!!
I cut them off.
I never thought to put shims under the toilet! But it would prevent rocking on old floors. Good idea
I noticed you didn't put any cement board behind the shower walls. Since those are prefab, do you not need to do that?
Per their specs nope. It works just like a prefab alcove tub install.
@@WoodWorkLIFE that's great! Thanks for the quick response!
I really value people taking the time to comment on videos, as long as you aren't being an annoying ahole. You get a response, as long as I can keep up.
Looks good. Next time put in a smooth sided toilet, easier to clean, and keep clean.
Good tip
Really awesome video! So cool seeing what the inside of a house built in the 1800's looks like.
Nice job! Fantastic footage and editing. I like the tile floor and the accent tile in the shower. Who wouldn't love a bathroom remodel?
Thanks so much for the compliment brother! I wish I would've done my own bathroom, it turned out super nice!
Great work!
However, I thought it was funny that when she entered the bathroom, she was in awe. Then, she saw the tile, and you can see a difference in her awe-mazement.
Oyyy the tile job was rough lol but cool video and nice work overall. Home projects aren’t easy
What’s his t shirt say inthe beginning and the end of the video?
He says at the end of the video "Keep your tool sharp and keep your mind sharper".
Did you lose all the space between the tub and the slanted wall?
Only a couple inches. I will probably add a closet back there.
Excellent work, nicelly done
Thanks so much, nearly drove me crazy.
Is the floor bowed some?
Oh HELL Ya
Very nice of you doing that for you mother in law. I love the shower faucet, do you remember the name, finish or Item numeber😊

I'm looking for fixtures just like these. Thanks for shopping for me!
Looks cool. I just gotta point out at 10:30 anyone saw the shims under toilet. Lol
wooooow good job🤩👍
I am from Egypt
No cement or waterproofing in the tub?
Ya we cemented under the tub.
Great remodel! It looks amazing. And those reveal shots are killer 👍👍
Thanks Caleb! I was trying to do the whole HGTV reveal thing their at the end. Too bad I cut my head off.
Nice one! Gotta keep the Mother in Law happy and it looks like you did with this project!
She loves me. I don't know where all those weird stories of mil and sons come from.
Where did you get that elephant?

Hey Armando, welcome! Glad you could check it out. I should start doing surprise publications more often.
That toilet and flooring in general Is anything but level 😂
The toilet and tub are the only things in the bathroom that ARE level. Damn 1895 house.
Cardinal fan?
Yes...a lot. How'd you know?
Did you rent any tools?
Yes I rented the tile saw, it was a life saver
felt sea sick because of that wavy tile in the shower
Alright it’s demo time, who is this man? Wow man you look different without a bread. Top job on the project man.
I know right. It does let me prove my manliness by showing how much beard I grow in a month :)
What's with the shims under the toilet...?
They are composite shims to level out the toilet. I trimmed them off and caulked afterwards.
Hi. I want to make a wooden pc case like the one you did nearly 2 years ago. Would it be possible that you send me your sketch up fiöe?😊
If you support me on patreon the files is on there .
@@WoodWorkLIFE okay thanks
@@WoodWorkLIFE im a patreon now but i still cant find the file😢
@@justsmile5768 I'll post it when I get home. Could've sworn the SKP was on there from a while back.
@@WoodWorkLIFE thank you i appreciate it
Nice job, beautiful
Thanks, I did my darn rest on it.
Wish i had a son in law!!
It pays to have a good son in law
Wood.Work.LIFE. It pays even more to be a good mother in law, trust me, you don’t get any of this when ur a bitch that meddles in people’s lives. But yours looks like a good person. 🤗
Very very 🧐skeptical
cool
Mistakes were made, sure, but that's the cost of DIY! Tiles are such a pain in the ass. Definitely dig the finished product!
Thanks man, always learning
For sure, I have done some hideous tile work while learning how to do it right. He did a great job overall.
@@Lysander-Spooner Lol you should see my first tile/grout/caulking job.... makes me shudder every time I see it.
You forgot to change the trim right outside of the door :)
I should've just kept on going and remodeled the whole house
What was the total cost?
Around 7k
No wait that's not even close. More like 3500
3500? Not 7k by doing it yourself?
@@hahahahah8396 ya like all the parts and tiles and wood and stuff we're 3500. I hired a plumber for all the critical stuff for like 600. Would've been 7kish if I had a pro do it.
I seen some in UA-cam who hire pro and they charge 15 to 25k. It does take skill like you have to save that much! I would like to learn sick and tired of paying people who does not do a good job and just run with your money!
I realize the house is old and crooked but what a hack job. The dry wall joints, the vanity has a huge gap against the walls, shower tiles were all crooked... you ever caulked around the toilet which is a terrible idea. If there’s any leaks the water is going to be trapped under the toilet and rot/rust everything beneath it. This is what I’d expect in a flipped home
Ya I suck at drywall. The gap being the sink is unfortunately unavoidable with a freestanding vanity in this house 😪. I added a piece of trim after the fact. What are you talking about caulking under the toilet? Of course I caulked the lower rim of the toilet. I am not the greatest bathroom remodeler, but it actually looks pretty damn nice. The only issue I had is I didn't wait long enough for the adhesive on the tile to dry and 1 tile drooped.
Wood.Work.LIFE. So when you caulk the rim of the toilet, if you have any leaks from the pipe, that water is trapped beneath the toilet with no way of it getting out. That could get into your cast iron drain and rust it, damage your tile, etc. Hope that explains it
@@verygoodboy2688 ok ya that makes sense. Might cut out the caulking just to be safe. Every toilet I've ever seen has been caulked as far as I can remember. To be fair I am no professional bathroom contractor.
Wood.Work.LIFE. There are two schools of thought in this. No caulk = easier maintence and ability for water to escape from internal leaks, caulk = better aesthetic for uneven floor, prevents outside water from floods or clogs getting underneath (good if you have kids), so it’s up to you which makes sense, but I generally think no caulk is safer
attention to details makes all the difference.
left side of bath front- wtf is sticking out of there ?
trimming- holes i could squeeze dollar coin in.. (9:47)
this plastic bath shield transition to the wall
silicone seems to not be even radius
mentioned before tile cuts
air (cracked bottoms?) of tiles
drywall the toilet outlet pipe next time, it looks so bad.
not, that you didn't do a great job, but details that you once see messed, cannot be unseen.
practice, you are on a good way!
Thanks for the constructive criticism. I thought about calling this video "feel better about yourself watching a woodworker stumble through a bathroom remodel and look completely mortal" but it was too many characters
Everything looks great except for the subway tile in the shower
Ya, that was rough
You should have used blue drywall, in a few years there will be moist all over.
It was "blue" drywall it's just green here in MO
@@WoodWorkLIFE ah okay didn't know im from Europe!
Such a good son. However - I just have to comment on some of your choices: you went to all the time, trouble and expense to tear out and rebuild walls, install tile floor, etc. yet you wound up with a ho-hum, builder quality bathroom - because you put in prefab fiberglass tub surround and a really bizarre accent tile.
Its a little nicer than builder grade but it is a pre fab. Works really nice in this application though.
He looks like Seth Rogen
He he he (he laughed Seth Rogenly)
I am...going to loose my mind.....stop....the job!!! Please Demo the project...Stop and Demo the project!!@ Demo the project!@!!
what's wrong? never worked on a warped ass house?
Did you use the tub surround as the wall! You are supposed to put up green board or cement board walls and and waterproof it and then put up that nasty plastic wall fake tile surround.
Not for this kit.
you should probably avoid ever touching a tile again
