Average payment is 500 so until you put 300-500 a month in repairs its dumb to buy a new car. Vehicles are a waste of money...never buy new they are not worth much once you pull off the lot.

David White Do what works for your budget,I've been a mechanic my whole life drove a 1969 Camaro 427 as a daily driver before they became collector cars,I saved a ton of money from day one,I bought a new Car because I have a family member in Prison and it's a long drive I planned on taking my Mother but she has passed away since then,I haven't lost anything because I won't sell the car I bought back in 2014 you really lose money when you trade them in,like I said do what works for your budget,I've made plenty of money off people with old cars needing repairs so I do see both sides.

First off, Dave should've asked him what kind of car he is driving. Hondas, Toyota, Nissan any Asian car is very reliable and if you keep up with the maintenance it'll last you forever.i drive my 98 Honda Civic with over 200K and it would lasted my forever and driving great... only until a truck rear ended me and I was so sad to lose such an amazing used car.

    • @mtnlvr2157

I have a Honda Civic 96 that I bought new and have maintained it regularly. It now is needing expensive repairs with 250K miles so I went car shopping new and like new used. Nope! They're not as good as mine and by the time you figure in payments, insurance, taxes, etc. my used Honda which is only costing me $1k a year now is cheaper. I'm retired and don't plan on driving much any longer. Been taking public transport. so can't justify scrapping/selling a great car for a good used one that's probably someone else's headache...and will need repairs.

I normally just buy new once the repairs cost more than the value of the car, but I drive 66 miles a day as well so my vehicles have to last into high mileage as well as get good gas mileage.... my wife on the other hand doesn't drive as far as me and she has a horrible driving record, so she gets the used beaters that aren't worth as much.

"old car is done" - depends on what type of repair is needed. Dave forgot to ask a very important question. Unless it's major engine or transmission issue, almost of other repairs can be done by DIY owner for much much less and it doesn't cost $1400!!

  • @cyworld2707

Cars now days are designed to break. It used to be that there were less manufacturers so the incentive 50 years ago was to build quality so that you could maintain customer loyalty and expand your market. Now it is about selling cars at cost and making money on repairs and parts. A car will give you 100,000 - 200,000 miles on the mechanics itself, the engine specifically. But the other components necessary to to run the engine (the ignition system in particular) is run by onboard computers and electronic sensors. Electronics are highly subject to heat and grease which is what a car's internal combustion system is all about. Electronics and an ICE is a marriage that's bound to fail. Keep in mind as a buyer that a person won't want to sell a car unless its giving him trouble (the same advice that Dave gives you if you own a lemon with payments.) If you find a seller who is moving, that can no longer drive for health reasons, or is part of a deceased estate sale, then it is a different story.

The callers, Dave, and a lot of the commentors, all reveal much misunderstanding of motor vehicles in general. They don't magically just wear out and become worthless. Many of them are driven to junk status prematurely, due to a lack of both preventive and corrective maintenance. Even 15-25 year old vehicles can remain quite dependable and serviceable if they are maintained. I have a 2003 Trailblazer with 223K miles on it. Book value is likely $2-$3K. It has been very reliable. I trust and depend on it. If it failed me right now, needing a new engine, I wouldn't hesitate to do it, even if it cost $3000-$4000. I would not go into the marketplace and buy a $3-$4K replacement because I wouldn't know it's history and what I could expect in the way of future dependability. If I only got 3-4 more years out of my Trailblazer, it would have cost me $1000-$1300 a year. I might get more, but that's a very nominal cost in this era, either way.

I had an experienced mechanic once explain to me that for a used car one should budget about $100 per month (. $1,200 per year) for repairs & maintenance. Considered just a cost of driving a car. So if he has a $1000 repair and can drive it for 12 months, then repair it and hopefully it will be sale able at that point. The trick is, before shopping, ask your mechanic what model car he almost never gets to repair, only maintain. That’s the one to buy. I did just that, I’ll let you speak to your mechanic rather than reveal what I bought. Three mechanics said the same make and model though.
