People need to realize a car is a machine and machines wear out and break.
$300 is nothing to complain about really.
Haha right. 300 dollars on maintenance beats the deprication cost of a new car... Every single month.
Richard McCready I take it you've never owned a Toyota.
+hitssquad I have toyota I bought brand new. I put 185,000 original miles and other than oil changes, brakes, tires ive never never had a mechanical faire or a major repair. never thought id see the day where im wondering why my car hasnt broken down on me yet. will continue to buy toyotas from here on out.
I agree. I bought a 2000 Honda civic last September with 120k miles for $3000.. in June this year it started running terrible. I took it in and spent 1600 to have some motor work done to it. runs like a champ now. hoping to get 2 or 3 more years out of it until we are debt free to upgrade. made me angry paying that amount at the time because our other 2011 Taurus could be almost paid off.. but nooooo I had to fix the civic.
What year is the car?That matters as well.If it's 20 years plus,that's great.If it's 10 years,that's normal.
$300 feels like $3000 when u don't have it...
Ain't that the truth! Lol
Fax
Totally agree. Dave doesn't seem to get it. They are Po' and no mechanic is going to fix the car and then wait a month for them to get the money. Goodyear offers a Credit Card like that (I'm sure there are others) BUT it's a credit card and Dave would poo poo that too. Plus when you have spent 300+ and still don't know what's wrong and the fixes aren't a fix... at what point do you call it quits? When they tell you it's the transmission or engine?
“Get a 3rd job”
That’s 3 dinners at restaurants. Eat at home
I die when he told her "you are over reacting.... calm down" lol
Safely in his studio.
Andy Taylor 😂🤣
You can lob truth bombs at women you’re not sleeping with.
just went through this, had to replace my battery and alternator and freaked out. Got it fixed though and now back on the road. Dave's right, we have to learn how to calm down first, then we can see other perspectives.
Dave telling an angry women to clam down. He is so brave.
Jesse Brave...or stupid? 😀
She stopped talking because she is convening a hit squad. lol
@@andytaylor1588 she stopped talking because Dave clicked her off
Like Dave said they need to come back down the baby step ladder to step 1, use the over payment money of step 2. Top up the Starter Emergency fund, bit by bit & get the car running. Then step 2 again once sorted, steady that ladder before you climb again. Principles of the Baby steps, done it my self this year.
I am currently going through this. This video came at a great time!
+Rome Flo fight the good fight i believe in you
Should have gotten a used Toyota. I've seen the body of one almost completely rusted through and it still ran like water!
Stop this lie. Every Toyota dealer is full of broken down Toyotas
Yes, because the myth about a new car with a payment is that you won't have to worry about bringing it to the shop for repairs. They still require oil, brakes, shocks and the million and half "maintenance packages" that they tell you needs to be done to maintain the warranty On TOP of the monthly car payment.
The 30,000 mile "major service" on a Toyota is:
• engine air filter change
• cabin air filter change
You can do that yourself. The valves *might* need adjusting every 60,000 miles, and the iridium spark plugs last 120,000 miles. The brake pads can easily last the life of the vehicle (500,000 miles?) if it's a hybrid. Tires will last longer than the tire warranty (normally far longer than 40,000 miles) if they are rotated on schedule and hard cornering is avoided. The scheduled oil change interval is 10,000 miles.
Maintenance and repairs are two different things.
I've been driving 27 years and never replaced shocks on a car. I've only put brakes on vehicles twice, and did it myself on one of my vehicles. I do my own oil changes - for about $30.
chieftp I've replaced shocks twice. Both vehicles had over 200,000 miles.
I don't even recall whether they were worn out, but I had to replace the broken coil springs so it was a while-you're-in-there job.
I've done lots of brakes.
I've never had a vehicle with any where near that many miles. well, a '67 bug with 190K. but my current vehicles are 101K, 39K and 11K.
This reminds me of when my mom's water heater busted and when she saw the water on the floor she exclaimed that she was just going to sell the house. I looked at her like she was crazy. It's not like a water heater is an actual component of the house's structure. I think I said to her, "what are you going to do when you get another house and its water heater goes out as well?".
LOL. She’ll buy a house without a water heater and every cold shower, she’ll be thinking “I showed that water heater!” 😂
Broken cars always make women panic.
MsSassyMT You are so right. Although Dave says he gets upset too.
+MsSassyMT Yes if I have a dead battery it makes me want rid of my car.Well I am not quite that bad but it does go through my mind .
MsSassyMT Exactly
it's so true. and the service scammers at the dealership scare them into paying for stuff that's not necessary.
That’s true
$235x12=$2820 a year. Even if you spend $1000 to fix it you come out ahead. If you spend $1000 per year to keep it running you are ahead.
^ THIS. even if my transmission in my 2003 Honda Civic w/ 202,800 miles blew out, it would still be worth it to fix. $380 used pulled transmission from JDM in NJ on ebay or craigslist. my body does work on the side for $40/hr cash. he has a lift. would take him 4 hrs about. done. and i keep on going
@@jgg204 Well yeah but most people don't exactly know someone that has the equipment and will do car work for $40/hr. If your a normal person it will cost $2,500 to put a used trany in the car. Also, keep in mind the failure rate of used transmissions. It is typically better to find a better cheap car if you can find one and know what to look for and the car has service history.
For a econobox, then factor in insurance cost (full coverage, and a more expensive car to replace). I was doing the math trying to justify it for myself when my car was having issues. It's ok though when I retire i'll by my duramax off the lot cash
That's why I wouldn't want to turn in a good car for a junker. You just know that thing is going to be riddled with problems. I would much rather go on paying the $260 a month for the reliability and peace of mind. It's a small price to pay but I guess it's all relative. She only owed another $1200 on her car and then she would have been done and had a car she could rely on. Another 5 months and that thing would have been paid off. If she had owed $20,000 that would be a different story but at this point she almost owned the thing free and clear.
I feel like after he told her to calm down she just hung up the phone lol
At 5:10 he cut her off
in my experience every used car is gonna need at least $500 to get it reliable. There's always a reason someone sold it.
Eh personally i understand where your coming from.. but I’ve owned 5 cars in the past 3 years and me I just sell to get something different! I mean I see where your coming from, but typically there’s nothing wrong with my vehicles I just like different things
@@brandonballard7472 you should lease cars instead of buying or financing them.
@@Penelope416yeah if you drive five miles a day and hate having property
I just bought a 1996 F150 for $1000 and I put $1500 in repairs so it would pass the mandatory insurance safety inspection. So a pretty nice F150 4 wheel drive for $2500.
mikeyvester Job well done. It's waaay better than getting a car payment.
I paid $5,000 for a 2002 Honda CR-V in 2016. I have a total of $8,000 in it now including maintenance and repair. I’ve put 187,000 miles on it on top of the 160,000 it had when I got it. There is no expense it could have that would upset me. I’m waaay ahead.
Thats the point, Dave doesn't say, you have $1000 emergency fund and thats it, you have that as a buffer, and your budget is less the payment of that other car, so in reality, you have $1200, stop paying over on your first debt and get the car fixed. Your on a budget, if you deplete your emergency fund, stop paying gazelle crazy on your debt and reset. Don't get upset if you have to use your emergency fund, that what its there for. It is a process, it will take time, it wont happen overnight, stay the course
You owe 3200 and you sold the car and bought a 2300 old car. That dosent even make any sense. The car you own worth 6000 and now your stuck with a 2000 dollar broken car.
She sold the car that she owed $3,200 on for $6000, which means that instead of owing $3,200, she has $2,800 cash sitting in her hand. She spent $2,300 of that $2,800 on a car which means that instead of owing $3,200, she's ahead $500. Her move made perfect financial sense.
kablackbelt09ts I probably would have paid the financed car off that I had for years and, therefore, know the history of as opposed to selling it in order to buy a used car that I know nothing about. Knowing the car's history is worth skipping the $2,800 "gain" to me. How do I know that it won't need $4,000 in repairs at the end of the day?
Its a total gamble. That gamble is why I absolutely HATE buying used cars. I personally would have just rather paid off the loan, and kept the car for myself until I drove it straight into the ground.
Yup. My budget is risk averse. I'd never buy a vehicle that I didn't know the history of.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Dave system is awesome but you have to use common sense depending on where you are when it comes to owing money on a loan for a car
kablackbelt09ts but she already put in $6000....
A lot of times it is Cheaper to go to the Dealer to get it diagnosed. Non dealer shops are good no knocking them but alot of times they don't have tools/info that a dealer has.
You have to find a skilled mechanic. My mother wasted $2k taking her older Pontiac to a GM dealer who were unable to diagnose and fix it and I took it to a good independent mechanic and he immediately found out it was the defective Pass-lock security system and got it fixed. The idiots at the dealer can't diagnose anything unless the car's computer tells them what the problem is.
Should have bought a 94’ Toyota Celica
“Scotty Kilmer”
Only buy a Toyota is what Dave needs to tell people with his buy a cheap car advice.
Yes!
Dave Ramsey and Scotty Kilmer go hand in hand lol
God I feel sorry for the husband
That $300 she spent could have paid the diagnostic at the dealer to figure out the real problem..
Now imagine being emotionally invested in this woman as your spouse. Harder to be objective.
It's a Hyundai that's the first problem. Any car new or used needs maintenance and if you neglect that it will prematurely fail
I have a tip: Get AAA car insurance and you get a free yearly diagnostic at at AAA approved repair shop!! It's been positive for me!
So if she in the situation where she spent her $1,000 emergency fund and now has a needed car repair, what would she do? I feel like Dave completely dodged the question.
Save up again, money doesn't grow out of trees, there is no magic trick to it.
She said they were spending 1000 a month paying debt. He told her to stop paying off debt and get the car fixed. Didn't dodge it at all
If you become a good mechanic you become a car whisperer.
Crank SEAL sensor? What does that do? Or did the lady meant: crank sensor?
+MeowJW Crank Position Sensor :P
Fuel pump. My mother had a brand new Hyundai Tucson the car was not even 2 years old the fuel pump broke down. She took it to the dealership they said it was the key they reprogrammed the key and the problem was still here. She took it back they couldn't find the problem. I told her to go back there and tell them to check the fuel pump. She went there got it checked and that was the problem
hyundai is JUNK
Not supposed to inject Ketamine into yourself.
no warranty on car. in nj dealer have to give at least 30 day warranty if car has less then 100k miles
Sorry, should have kept the $6000 car. You knew what it was all about
+m ph Right on, right on!
Or not bought a car from a repo man!
That car has bad juju!
E.W. Hans The remaining balance on that car was $3200. At the rate of $1000 per month, she could have just focused that on getting that car paid off and it would have taken 3.2 months, so call it 4 months at most. Its worth having payments for 3 or 4 final months of a final car loan if it means keeping the car that you know all the history of. I mean...shes probably been paying for 48 prior months at least...so what's honestly another 4 to finish it up? Nothing.
E.W. Hans I mean...to get the POS she has, she paid $2300 + $300 in repairs = $2,600...for another $600, she could have kept what she had... (not to mention the LOOMING mystery repair that we DON'T know about, which further closes that gap to being almost a wash).
If you loved the car you understand that sometimes things need fixing and you be happy to fork out the money to get it fixed. She hates the car that’s why she’s complaining about having to get it fixed
Had a similar issue with my car. Replaced the intake manifold gasket, valve cover gaskets, purge solenoid valve, camshaft and crankshaft sensors and now the car finally works with no issues
Crank "seal" sensor, lol. Um, ok.
I think the crank "seal" sensor would be oil in the driveway haha
Thats pricey to fix isnt it?
Most Ford mechanics can usually diagnose all cars and usually always have a flat fee from anywhere from 60/100 dollars
And i just had to take my car for similar repairs. Im taking it to the original shop to tell em it aint do it. Thank you ramsey
hmmm.. She may just need to go to a new mechanic.
And some anxiety pills.
+pontiachotshot or some dank kush man, i never act like that ( but i cry over spending 20$)
No.
I think her problem was to go to a different mechanic.
Once the first one fixed it,
And it got bad the very next day,
She should of gone back to him and demand why what he did didn't work.
.like, my mechanic guarantee his job.
Then
Go to the second guy if the first guy didn't fix it.
And as Dave said, go back again and tell him whatever he did didn't do it.
She's just jumping around.
Another lady that doesn’t want to admit where her intentions are...
older Hyundai's are poor quality.

I've heard of someone doing really well with a Hyundai sonata in Arizona. I, however, had a disgusting experience with an 03 accent in snowy, upstate ny.
Now I have a 98 Honda CRV..so much better
I think she was scared that they tapped out there emergency fund
Tell her dave!!
NEVER buy a used Korean car.
Mine fell apart at 50,000 miles.
+MrBreeze my subaru is falling apart on the same milage!
Engine knocking and pinking at 42 000 miles, engine light always on and giving no codes, my vehicle is an import limited edition R sport and mechanics can never diagnose the problem, its a 10 year old car so i guess its expected😩
That's odd for a Subaru.
I got a beat up 2004 hyundai sonata at 159000 miles and it drives pretty well. I've had to do some repairs on it but it'll do for now.
i just look around and buy a $500 car ! if I can get a year out of it then I am not losing anything !
I do the same think .if it breaks, throw it away and buy another.
I wouldn't want to put myself in a potential situation- 100 degrees, car breaks down, w 5 kids
I have this same problem with my Hyundai, keeps blowing crank sensors...think I’ll avoid Hyundai next time and go with Toyota !
This is late but she could take the car to AutoZone and they put the diagnostic machine on that tells what's wrong on for free.
She sounds like Atlanta. There are certain type of women who live in Atlanta that sound like her. I don’t know why.
The issue with her car is the battery I guarantee it!
i'm thinking the battery too. it's amazon what a slightly faulty battery can do to a modern vehicle. if the computer senses irregularities it won't even start the car or it will just shut it down
This woman is crazy.
I just bought a 2012 VW Jetta....it's recently begun to stall at stops. I'm hoping it's an easy fix like a filter or sensor.
my car needs a $1100 repair on emissions and $300 repair for breaks!! and on top of that i’m still paying 267per month on that car for about 2 or 3 years more.. I dont know if i should even keep the car or sell it? it has 100k plus miles in it.
If you feel that $1,400 will keep the car running reliably for time to come I would say pay for it, as you already paid $3,000 a year and car payments
Hyundai doesn’t have anti theft. That’s why salvage yards are full of them with the ignition punched out
In such a case have the diagnostics done by Honda and the repair then done in a cheap garage. Will save you 2/3 of the repair costs. Ore do it yourself if you can and only pay for the diagnostics and spair parts.
i do that for complicated electrical diagnostic work. let the dealer do their thing. pay them the full 1 hr $120 or whatever it is, get an actual diagnosis with a printout of what is wrong. take that to your local mechanic who charges $60/hr and get the work done.
I owe $5,000 on a high mileage vehicle that may need a $1,500 repair. It's runs beautifully but if I don't get this fixed it will eventually become useless. Should I sell the Truck to someone who doesn't mind fixing it and take a small loss and move on to another vehicle or sink $1,500+ into a car that is worth maybe about 5 or 6k?
I see where she is coming from if she simply doesn't have the money this minute. Normally one leans on credit for those situations if the emergency fund is gone but she has vowed not to use debt. Carpool or take the bus til next paycheck?
Westhill Meadow sometimes carpooling and taking the bus is not an option. it all depends on where this young woman and her husband lives. some people live in areas where there is no type of public transit.
She needs to use a credit card.
Musa I of Mali 😂😂😂
Chevy!
Nova.
This is why I buy cheap cars for a few hundred. I'll put a couple hundred into repairs (mostly done by me) and when a repair gets to costly on parts I junk it for a few hundred. Saves $$$$ in the long run.
My mom has a Nissan and they want to charge 100 dollars per hour for a diagnostic fee however the ford dealership down the street can diagnose any car for a flat fee of 60 dollars guess where I carry it
When you're on a car the first thing you should do is find a good honest mechanic
Could have a shut down chip in it if previous owner had a buy here pay here deal
Crankshaft position sensor is easy to replace look it up on UA-cam
LOL i know right? i just did mine in the Civic the other day. you just pull back the timing cover and it's right there. bam done. took 20 mins maybe, and that includes answering a phone call in the middle.
No, the camshaft position sensor is very easy to reach, the crankshaft position sensor it's typically near the back of the engine by an alternator depending on how crazy the manufacturer wants to make the repair AKA Ford
A Hyundai, that may be part of the
Problem...Seriously.
She paid twice to have the trouble codes cleared, it hasn't been fixed. The fix will be found when she finds a competent mechanic... The problem is that mechanics are in the same class as used car salesman and real estate agents!
always buy a Toyota, Honda and Nissan
noway2009 my last car was an Altima, it started leaking and burning oil. It smoked, leak coolant and had timing chain noise at start up. It only had 132k miles and was on it's last leg before it got totaled. Now I have a Sonata for almost a year. The Sonata has proven to be a much better car than the Altima.
never had problems with Toyota other than my wife totalling it in a wreck... I had a Nissan sentra that I bought new in 2008 and the transmission started going out at just a little over 120,000 miles
Ryan Cook the best Nissan Sentras ever made were 91 thru 94 models and the 95 thru 99 models. I had a 92 Nissan Sentra that was extremely reliable. I've driven it all over until it got totalled.
Check the reliability ratings. Nissan's quality has suffered as of late while Hyundai has improved.
i never hear good things about Nissan
First thing she did wrong was go to bad auto mechanics. You have to do research and find a good reliable business or person you know. If you don’t you will continue to get ripped off.
I wonder what kind of car that was cause it sounds like a similar problem I had with my 04 Chevy Malibu.
seems like to me they are just clearing the codes then they comeback with a no start
I know it sucks but chill. I’d just go right back to the mechanic
go onto Craigslist and find a $2,000 Honda Civic, 7th gen (2001-2005) MANUAL TRANSMISSION. it will run forever
He cut her off at the pass before she could even make her case that taking out a loan on a new car was justified.
Another thing! They paid off 10k debt in 8 mos. Shoulda paid off the car, snowball'd that car pmt to pay the 10k off and had the better car to use instead of a junker. I don't know about the rest of y'all, but in my experience, and I've had plenty, junkers are cheap for a reason. 'Cause they are junk. A $2000 car is going to break down and need repairs. And if you can't do the work yourself then it is going to drain you dry.
Hyundai has some bad cars. The older ones are horrible, but I have seen a bunch of new"er" hyundai elantras with over 200k running strong.
@3:48 Honday is like Honda but cheaper. ^^
Wrong.
An intermittent computer problem can take a few tries to fix.
Check the car's security system.
If you buy a used car buy a Subaru, Honda, or Toyota or Nissan. I have a 2003 subaru forester with 150k miles and still drives well. My brother has a Nissan Pathfinder that is 20 years old with 200k and still has not broken down.
FurKids OnBoard Nissans are not longer very good. They were decent in the 90’s. The new CVT auto transmissions go out all the time at low mileage, 75-125k. They are more cheaply made than Toyota or Honda. Toyota is the reliability king.
The car was flooded. That's what it has. You are welcome.
Sounds like the computer may need to be reprogramed at the dealer OR the mechanic didn't fix it properly to start with. Unhook the battery let it sit for a day and rehook it up and see if it restet itself, alot of cars computers require a hard reboot
Hope Is Blind That's the first thing you should always do if your car has a problem unless it's completely obvious though you don't need to let it sit a day, a couple hours would do.
Got one hyundai recalled the motor 2011 sonata
She's likely getting gouged for that spendy diagnostics by a dealer - run away from the dealer and find a certified independent mechanic.
2 1/2 years late but I know what's wrong with the car.. I don't know the English word for it, but in German it's "Abgasregelventil". Had that on my car last year. Didn't start, no one could tell me what was wrong until I took my mom with me and we were looking through the whole engine. 100€, a few hours cussing and scratched knuckles later it was fixed.
Exhaust gas control valve.
@@andytaylor1588 - Thanks for that translation!
The person who sold you the car probably was fed up with it having put a lot of money in it so he put it up for sale. You bought it and are facing a electronic nightmare. The modern cars run like computers. Trying to fix a car now a days is like trying to fix your personal computer's main board or other circuitry. Sounds like you jumped from the frying pan into the fire. You should have kept your car with the loan.
Wow! She doesn't want to hear this at all. I would never allow a woman to be an intermediary in dealing with car repairs, in most cases. Where is her husband? Wonder if he is one of these guys that never taught himself
anything about cars?
She needs to buy a Toyota!
^ THIS. a 2005 Corolla or something. will be $2,000 on craigslist and will last forever
Is she (also) paying to have this car *towed* around - seemingly often?
That's expensive. Even AAA, in my area, has a limit on tows.
It's easy to dismiss her anxiety over a $300 bill. I get it.
But it's possible the logistics are also costly.
It should have been a nightmare. Listening to this crazy man. You sold a good car you were $3000 short of paying off. To buy a bad car you knew nothing about.
Dave go home to his wife and they laugh at how many stupid people sell their good cars to but cheaper bad cars.
You have a 200ish payment and u have a problem, guess what, your income is your problem
And selling a good car with couple thousands to pay off and jump into a garbage, thats your fault
STOP GOING TO THE STEALERSHIP! THEY ARE RIPPING YOU OFF! Try to find a good trust worthy independent mechanic or learn how to diagnose and fix cars yourself!
Honestly...
Calling Dave to get advice on a car that needs repairs. That's werid.
I think Dave enjoys what he does. He fought through all this stuff himself, but now he's a millionaire and doesn't have to struggle anymore. But he still has these skills built up from when he climbed out of bankruptcy so he likes to use them to help others.
She’s panicking about $300 dollars and I just had to fix my car which is also a Hyundai and I spent $1000 of money that I didn’t have and had to use my credit card. I did not panic yes I got stranded yes I maxed my credit card and yes I lost hours at work. But at the end of the day it’s an investment we as consumers have to make to be employed. We fix it and we maintain it so that at least the chances of it braking down are lower.
Why would you talk about other men when you're married..?
yall need to buy a toyota
fukin Hyundai when buy 2-5k cars stick to domestic
I'll never buy a GM car again. Bought 2 in the 90's Saturn and Pontiac and they were quite regrettable. Saturn was burning oil and have transmission flare up and rusting out by 60k miles and died at 90k and the Pontiac had 2k in trouble with their defective pass-lock security system, electrical problems, cheap engine cradle rusted out, just all sorts of problems. Finally died at 15 years and 35k miles.
