If you've owned a car or truck long enough, or if it's old enough, you've probably asked yourself if your car or truck is worth the cost of repair, or is it time to trade it in for something newer? Even savvy home mechanics have a limit! Here's Sue to help you decide! Keeping or selling a car that needs work is never an easy decision, and the correct answer can depend on several factors. In this video, Sue discusses the pros and cons of paying repair bills (or hopefully doing it yourself!) and moving on to a newer vehicle all together. Hopefully she can help if you are facing this dilemma!

I wish Sue would do more videos, when she talks about Car repair it's more believable it's like an old friend. Thank you Sue.
Many Americans cannot distinguish wear and tear parts vs repair
I love Sue's sense of humor. She always makes watching these videos fun. It's always nice to see a female that knows cars and car repair also. Now a days very few people are educated about cars so it's nice that women that want to be educated can see a woman who is more educated and can explain issues better than most men. Kudos Sue kudos!
🙄
I love this lady. She's in my top 5 Mechanics on UA-cam. I tell everyone about her.
Love Sue!!! She's so smart and mechanically inclined!
I’ve seen people who just paid off their car, go and trade it in towards a new car. 🙄
Excellent video, Sue! We need more information like this on UA-cam. Thank you!
Throwaway society. People do the same thing with their cellphones or computers when the next years model comes out. The old one goes right to the bin.
2:28 People don’t like to put $500 into their car to get new tires but they want to put thousands of dollars down on a new car. Lol
Awesome points in the video Sue! Good luck w that move!
Excellent topic!
Subaru boxer engines are notorious for head gasket failure if kept long-term.
A/C work can also get very pricey.
Loved Rosie Perez in Fearless 👍🏽
Did a head gasket on my 98 subie dohc boxer a few years ago myself. I have to admit I was over my head. I was either going to fix it or junk it. I figured nothing to lose with trying as it was ruined anyway. 30,000 + miles and no prob with head gasket. Runs great. Did pay 300 to have heads worked on at machine shop. Would drive her across country today.
Don't you know it. I just had to pay US1K equivalent to replace the heater core and radiator.
Great video sue keep it up and thanks for all the help
Awesome video Sue, I appreciate all the tips in between sharing top issues on car repair and issues 😀
Excellent video. Sue & 1A Auto. Two Thumbs Way Up. - people will have it helpful.
Great advice! Thanks
Thanks for a great video!
Awesome video Sue! I agree with your logic. Rather keep as much money as I can. Plus, I like many of the older models better than the newer versions.
Hey Sue.
Some really good points.
SUE!!!! YES this is a topic that you explained so well. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the advice
Great video. Rust gets cars in the great north. I worked on my cousins car last winter, put $700 worth of parts on it (prob $3k at a shop). Got it 100% mechanically perfect, I advised her to sell it soon. The pinch welds were gone on it. I could barely pick the car up on a hoist due to rust.
My favorite truck years ago, the transmission went. I would have gladly fixed it, but the rockers/cab corners/fuel/brake lines were rotted out. Along with needing a set of tires. Rust was the deciding factor.
I really enjoyed this episode!... Thank you for making it. Awesome 👍
Did realize sue was such a character. This was a very amusing video to watch thanks for all the tips.
Bought a w211 cheap ran great for 8 year's love it, sore on petrol store it in the shed for winter took it out in May this year SBC went estimated 1500 euro, bought me a second hand star and reconditioned SBC pump got the two for 550 got lots of work to do but love the car so many memories in it, repairing it I'll take my time a labour of love, I don't drive it in winter because of road salt. My Audi that I drive all time Tdi have over 320,000 miles I think the engine is just about broken in and kunifer lines. Great vid Sue. People are too quick to buy new these day's talk about emissions.
Hi Sue! I just found you...guess why. I have just made the same decision: old car, 1 owner-new, reliable always, no dings or accidents, under 87 000. Now, head gasket, and maybe rebulit engine. 1st major work, so I owe this little car! Inexpensive on all counts and... it is NOT in the eve of car thieves. Don't forget THAT!
Out of debt. And right now, I'm staying that way.
Following dear
🎉😂
Wow... she has great presentation skills!!!
First time I watched >10min youtube video without skipping.
Thanks for enlightening us. Keeping cars for 20 years save 20 000 in common Midsize cars vs only 5 years
This was very entertaining and informative
I have a 2005 automatic honda civic. The transmission doesn't shift the smoothest but it gets the job done. If it were to fail, would it be worth replacing the transmission. The car has 260,000 km (162,000 miles) on it. No other major issues are on the car except a little rust on the body panels near the rear wheels.
I have a 2006 Subaru sti. Subaru is no bueno higher maintenance and repairs than a Toyota or Honda. I know because I own all 3 plus a lexus. This is in my humble opinion your most valuable video yet. Keep it up you are d best paz y salud
I love these videos (In fact I just purchased a new set of front lights for my Lexus from 1A based on one of these vids).
That said, living in Colorado, I am always fascinated and absolutely horrified at the rust and rot problems in these videos It would drive me crazy. Olathe must lay on the salt and chemicals non-stop during the winter.
Anyway, keep up the great work Sue. This library you have built is fantastic.

NEED #5 PISTON WITH NEW RINGS ON CRANK !
I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata with 60k that was in an accident and now has a salvage title. Putting aside the massive recall for the engine(mine is still going good and purchased from reputable source), does the dealership have to cover emissions recalls and catalytic converters even though I’m a salvage title?
Still driving my 2000 chrysler concorde LXI 3.2 running great 21 years later no real issues.. Shows regular maintenance does wonders.. 186,000 miles .
Oops Paul McCartney sung it! Lol
I repair my 06 and 03 cars, almost free motoring!
I have a 2000 Ford F150 with 328500 and it is been great to us at 240000 i but a new Engine and she still Going strong but I forgot I'm a Mechanic and lots of parts from 1A Auto you guys Rock Thanks
Perfect timing on this video, as I'm struggling with that decision now, on whether to spend the money to fix my dream car up, or let it go and get a new one. I have a 2000 Ford Mustang GT coupe that I bought in 1999. I ordered it from the factory. Same owner, me, all these almost 22 years. It has about 134,700 miles on it. I just found out last week that it has a slow coolant leak in the intake manifold and the water pump. It also has a misfire in one of the fuel injectors. It needs shocks and struts. It has a slow leak in the oil pan gasket. And I think the transmission is starting to slip. The mechanic checked the transmission fluid and said it was okay, so it's most likely the transmission itself starting to go. I just had the AC fixed last year (I live in Texas, so it was a must for me). 2 year old tires. Plus it needs cosmetic work, too, in addition to a few other more minor issues, and I'm not sure what else with the engine. I love my car, and it has been good to me all these years. But the cost to fix it up would be a lot more than I had originally anticipated, possibly almost the cost of a new lower-priced car. It is my dream car as I had wanted a Mustang since before I was old enough to drive. I cannot do mechanical repairs myself, as I don't have the skills or knowledge for that type of work, so I take it to the mechanic shop, and I do trust the people at this shop. They quoted me about $1600 for the intake manifold and water pump repair alone. That's not including what a new, or even rebuilt, transmission would cost, once it finally goes. It makes me sad to think I might have to give up my beloved car, but I'm trying to be realistic and practical. I LOVE not having a car payment for 20 years (put a lot down, and paid it off in about 2 years).
I have been considering a new car, if I can keep the payments low enough to fit my budget. I'm really leaning towards the Kia Forte LXS. I found out yesterday when I looked at one, that I can get 0% financing. That's pretty awesome.
What is your advice, or suggestions, on what I should do? Anyone with any helpful information or advice is welcome and appreciated. Is it time to let my Mustang go, or should I invest the money to fix it up? It still runs great, aside from the misfire and leaks. Sorry this was so long. Thanks!
Figured I'd throw my two cents in, since you asked! Former mechanic and tech analyst for a number of different motorsports companies from small repair/dealers to a service analyst for a major automotive brand.
First off, I'm glad your car has treated you well! After owning it for 22 years, I'm sure you've enjoyed it, and that's great. Considering your story, the sentimentality can play into the decision, but it's good to do as you stated and consider the options regardless.
Touching on the mechanical points you mentioned, coolant leaks in those areas are definitely bound to pop up with something of that age. Not uncommon considering the amount of heat cycles the engine and cooling system have been through by now, and the factory gaskets and seals can wear and leak. This can be pricey, but isn't unheard of - although depending on the severity, has the possibility of causing major damage if the engine overheats as a result of a loss of coolant. A misfire in a specific injector could be traced to something as simple as an exposed wire shorting on a grounded surface, injectors are generally fairly reliable but again with age, there's always the possibility they could fail themselves. An injector code won't always mean replacing the injector will fix it, however. Shocks and struts can be costly, but with the age of the vehicle, tend to toe the line of being a safety concern. Not the most difficult repair by far, but a bit time consuming. Oil pan leaks from the oil pan gasket are common and not difficult to repair, as long as the leak is in fact from that area. Oil always flows to the lowest point, and it's easy to miss oil leaks that originate higher up.
The real stomach-sinker was when I read the transmission issue you mentioned. That one has the potential to really push this into the realm of new vehicle consideration. Transmission repairs are almost always costly if indeed you do have a slipping situation, yet the fluid appears clean and doesn't smell burnt (regarding the automatic 4R70W in the GT). Does it always happen, regardless of whether the car has been running for a short time vs. a long time? Does the slipping tend to occur in one specific gear that you've noticed, or when you're heavier on the throttle? There's always a drain and re-fill of the trans, including replacing the screen filter, but if it really is worn, that won't be a fix. Stings a bit more considering you put money into the AC system, but that's just how it goes sometimes. I'd have a trusted independent mechanic drive it and consider what they say.
Here's what I'd recommend: It does sound like you love the car, and you're happy without a car payment, but you are being intelligent in considering the reality of the vehicle's age and repair costs. If you prefer to wait a bit, the GT is still running well enough and you can spare some expense, I'd consider putting some money towards repairing the coolant issue, as that has the potential to cause much bigger issues. Have the suspension system inspected for safety, and consider putting some money into that if they deem it necessary (including tires for safety if need be). However under this pretense- that you're ok with running the car until something mechanical majorly goes wrong, for instance if the transmission fails completely, and at that point you'd be ok with writing it off entirely. If you know it's only a matter of time and you're ok with that, enjoy it until something major does go wrong. Just like the AC, any investments at this point may be with drastically diminishing returns if your transmission fails cataclysmically tomorrow.
You mentioned looking at a specific model of car (not one I have experience with) which does tell me that your consideration for replacing your car is a little more than just speculative. If you're at a point where you really don't want to spend much more money on the GT, then this does sound like a logical time to consider a new vehicle, especially if you find something you like that fits your budget. Your GT has had a good run, and it was glad to have such an appreciative owner I'm sure. A new car will grant you a substantial amount of peace of mind, considering you're starting out with factory-fresh components. A large initial investment, but it'll be longer before major service will be needed. Keep on top of oil changes and regular scheduled maintenance and you're already far ahead of most! Best of luck.
great video! I have 1 I love and can't let go! I'm not to smart. 1993 f250 7.3 idi 4x4 manual. 2nd body is toast. metL in the oil. Still hauling HAND picket lumber. it is old school. .81 tons of gravel (yes when it was young) didn't squat , just went down the road. 2000 power stroke at 129k just left me IN the road on 100 degree day. Just replaced sway bar bushings and endlinks. They had zero fitting so I think it's already been done once. Look at my old truck and think these problems didn't exist when it was built! I think trucks should have a rain gutter on them , not to mention the side window.
Need some advice/help. 2008 Pontiac G6 GXP 3.6L 120k miles. Few weeks ago my car would violently jerk at any speed any gear below 1500 rpm, few days later 0303 error for cylinder 3 came up. This was the only code. I check all connections, wiring, sprayed off dirt/dust etc and checked ignition coil and everything looked fine. I reset the code and have drove it about 150 miles and no error code, but it still jerks below 1500 rpms. For the most part it drives fine, sometimes has delayed acceleration and would jerk once but not often. Oil looked/smelled fine. Does look like valve gasket might have a tiny leak. None of the spark plugs have been changed yet though. There have been no error codes on the cat converter either. If I am driving 40-50 mph and put it in 6th gear rpms drop under 1000 and the car freaks.. jerks violently, check engine pops up, tract control pops up and a few other error lights, then i drop it to 5th bring up rpms all the lights including check engine disappear and drives normal. Ive taken it to a few shops for diagnostics but i get the standard ohhh spark plugs need changed etc.. does this sound like something that is that simple or is there a more serious issue they are missing?? Please help if you can.
actually in this day and age. a lot of ppl dont have a choice fix it or go without a truck/car. used cars are few and far between. Almost the price of new vehicles. fix it or else. so help me fix it I have no choice.
Very timely video. I am trying to decide $80 tires or $180 tires. Car is 2004 with 12 year old tires. 109K. Some people get 250K. Thinking it is very unlikely that mine will unless I suddenly start putting highway miles on. Would be happy to get 3 more years out of the car. Might not be happy about loosing so much on tires.
If you own a pickup truck yeah it's worth fixing for the most part unless it's rusted in half.
Informative video...thanks. BTW, it's Paul McCartney.
I have a 2005 altima 2.5sl and it seems alright it has 173000 miles with no lights except one that I think it has something to do with the steering wheel. Or air bag. Needs valve cover gasket and the circle ones for the spark holes. Door panels don't click no more so they're loose and popped out. Emergency brake don't work maybe needs adjustment or replacement. Wheels will need replacement soon and its on one spare right now. Needs board for the trunk. Leaks water inside when it rains. The door weather straps are completely flat it let's dust to come in. Clear coat is gone
Thanks. Just for general culture, this applies to us and first world country. A service in a car in countries like Colombia is quite cheap against part prices and used car prices
No si, aquí en Colombia una buena reparada completa de de motor no pasa de 1000-2000 dólares a lo mucho incluyendo mano de obra, saludos.....
Mom and dad still have a 2004 Ford Expedition and it's still running strong in 2021
+Christopher Rosas Thanks for the feedback!
My insurer gave me extra because I had documentation for $1000 of recent repairs. But that was not Fly-By-Night Insurance Co.
1st problem had symptoms of a bad cps. fell in a dark hole on the internet. Turned out to be a problem with the super chip.
Oh I like her so funny ,don't blink she has lots of knowledge.
I can't believe people say I'm going to sell the car because of replacing wear and tear items like tyres.
For me I find the average person would typically be better off fixing their car vs getting a new one in every case except a transmission, engine, body rot, or if it is one that hasn’t been maintained and is breaking every week. I see all the time people won’t spend more than a car is worth and that is easy to do when the car is old. Often cars that are good cars in good shape but due to age the cost of a brake job being $700 costs more than the car is worth. I spent more on my daughter’s car than it was worth on just maintenance items, $1800 for a $1,200 car. However it is a 94 Corolla with 135,000 miles. I couldn’t get a car as good as what I got for the money spent. I did the timing belt, for peace of mind, all shocks and struts, new brakes all the way around and new tires, new spark plugs, new 02 sensors. It is a solid car that will last another decade and I won’t cry if it gets balled up. All that stuff adds up, now if maintained properly instead of people putting off maintenance it wouldn’t have been that bad.
+Carguy302 Thanks for the tip!
Sad people don’t understand the basic economics behind this. Southern cars with great bodies can be driven for decades. Northern cars exposed to snow & salt could be unsafe due to rust in under a decade.
Awesome humour😂loved it😁👍👏👏
Wow, and some call me a cheapskate , I've not owned a car on payments in maybe 33 yrs. Never bought a BRANDNEW one, buy cars with cash, get them fixed, mech/ body/ interior, etc. but leave my cars way better than when I get them. Never any payments! > My way is the smarter way!
Also as for engines and transmissions unless you are like me and like to hot rod them, don’t have a shop rebuild them, get a rebuilt exchange, much more economical, more reliable. For me I like modifying the internals so they are stronger and then I add power so I have no choice but to build the engine or transmission. I build my own engines so labor isn’t an issue, I pay $500 in machine shop fees for boring decking and balancing then the rest is parts. Most of you are better either getting a rebuilt exchange or going to a junk yard where you pull the engine, find a good one get it for a couple hundred bucks and throw it in.
+Carguy302 Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
lol Sues advice is on point but i think her advice is actually more prevelant now with the prices of both new and used cars. her example of a new car being 30-35k prob now for a used decent vehicle on the market and new 40k+. in a market like now it is so much better to just repair your car than to replace it

Bought a car for 2600. Drove it for 10 years. AC went out. Sold it for 900. Didn't felt it was worth it to FIX it for 500-1000. Thinking back I should have never sold it. I still miss that car.

Watching this video because My Volvos in the shop right now. Mechanic called today with worst news, saying they’re gonna have to put a new engine on it. It’s a very costly job. If it runs better than new after this, I’m not sure if I shoulder bother keeping or sell it.

I'm so nervous for her standing under that car with rotted frame on the lift.
That suspension on the Toyota 4 Runner you should address in a video... NOT cheap!!!!
When you sell your car, the value depends on the miles and the condition of your car, it doesn't matter if you spent 10k on it, that's your problem, people have to understand that they will never get back the money they have spent on their cars
+Benjamin Maldonado Thanks for the feedback!
Great video Sue. Just a minor request here and that is have your camera person not fiddle with the zoom and tilting the camera as it's very distracting and annoying to watch if like me - get motion sickness. Professional camera people keep it still.
Humor is great to hear and your vids are wonderful and fun to watch...
Keep up the great work...

I got lazy. I should of pulled my s10 motor and rebuilt or put one in from another truck. Paid a dude 2k to overhaul still leaks oil . Im pissed
@8:20 - Honda is telling me that my piston ring is defective and the car is consuming oil. Interesting. Now I have a 2012 Honda Accord with only 115,000 miles on her (not to mention exterior and interior are in immaculate condition). I cannot see how the piston ring could be defective. My previous Honda cars ran forever (well over 350,000 miles) and never had any issues. Honda is telling me it is cheaper to replace the engine than replacing the pistons. Of course they are singing a tune of $6,000.
There was a recall on some engines. My 2012 Odyssey had this issue and Honda had to rebuild the engine. Been running fine for 100K miles since
A 3.5 v6 would cost even more to fix on a Infiniti fx35
I think something rang HIS (skeleton's) bell a while ago. LOL 😆
I pay for my car 2500-3000$ and do tune up for 200-500$ and after 3-5 years sold for 2000-2300 .buy used guys . this is much better
600$ dollar flex pipe. I had two done ,new flex pipe ,welded on 80$ in Ohio
🤣thanks for the suggestion UA-cam. I'm feeling personally attacked by this videos subject. The content is great though.
Lots of flooded cars/SUVs on sales.
You forgot to talk about the people that doesn't know when to stop dumping money into 30 years old rusted-out piece of junk
Yeah that's me sorry
My neighbor needed new tires, new brakes. 1 year left to pay it off , paying 750 a month and what he do.
Trades in his tundra for a new tundra for extra $20 a month for 5 years .
You almost to the finish, just 2k for new tires and brakes .
" its only extra 20 a month"
" im already used to the payment "
I'm sure he gonna trade it in for the new 2022 and pay $20 more a month
Rosie Perez is awesome!
Lets see I had a car
I swapped the motr
Had the trans rebuilt
Replaced the running gears and axles
Rewired the entire electricasl system
Re did the interior
Replaced sweveral rusted sections
and repainted it.
When I was done it ran like a top aside for vasic maintanance.
Cost 8 grandish
At the time it would cost 15k to buy a new car not even a luxury or top of the line car.
Monthly payment for 7yrs of 485 so figure 500 a monthso 18months or 72 mos.
Always do the repairs, unless it's a Chrysler product 🤣
I had a customer wanted to trade her car because its 5 years old and it needed a battery
🙏
SUE??? UR NOT A FAN OF TOYOTA??? U KIDDN ME??? Is it bc it's reliable & doesnt see ur shop? Come on? I wonder what IS ur favorite? I'd LOVE to debate u.😁 I had a USED 97 camry 265,000 miles, didnt burn oil, had rust. If I had owned new, I'd STILL have. U neglected to mention, pay/pull junk yards. Saved me a $300 alternator for $20 for a high mileage car. I know 1A doesnt reap the harvest shoppn).Factor on keepn a car, DID U MAINTAIN IT??? ( CHANGE FLUIDS ON TIME). I like u AND 1A & have been subscribed so dont take it personally.😉😁
I put a rebuilt jasper engine in my 2007 Dodge Ram with 200k miles and it runs better than it ever has.

One suggestion to the camera person: Please keep the camera STILL when you aim at Sue who is talking and not showing anything. Unnecessarily zooming in and out and changing the focus just makes some viewers feel dizzy.
+LongTimeTTFan Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Klaus Schwab's apologists will hate the wise advice in this video. They want to force everyone to rent everything, own nothing, and be happy (Or else!).
If the engine, transmission and the body is solid its worth fixing regardless of the worth of the vehicle… if you will do the work… Just replace the radiator of my wife 06 yaris thats probably worth nothin but just doesnt die… 150 dollars aftermarket rad now its working again… parts is cheap but labor is expensive…. If you will not do the work better sell your old car..
I totally agree but we are the number 1 consumerist nation....we didn't get here by making rational decisions on car payments or debt...
