Hi Steve, thanks for this. I've been listening to this man sing for close to 40 years. Jesus, where has the time gone? Really enjoyed the interview and have subscribed to your channel. Take care man!
I'm only half way through listening to this interview thinking that, this is one of the best Fish interviews I've ever witnessed. You're having one of my personal music/lyrical icons going into depths of what his early life before finding Marillion was like...And then during his time with them. Bravo and very well done, Sir!
@39:34 The man is talking about how he has kept every rejection letter from when Marillion were seeking a record label...My word, this is interesting! Marillion were huge in my life in the 80's as all of my favourite bands were being harassed to make hit singles and waving off Punk Rock.....Seems forever and a day ago now. This interview is refreshing to hear, FISH is being fairly transparent with the history having been there. This interview certainly deserves far more watches/listens here than it's gotten. 👍👍 Having been a part of the rock scene in the 90's playing with a band whose music was garnishing attention but ....never the suits! Lol. Marillion have always been my 'go to' to prove the suits weren't always right. ;)
@@witeskyn7 yes i know his honesty is refreshing. My own technique is often to lay myself bare to get the artist to open up more, be non-judgmental, and to come from the angle of interest. The channel’s not that old but still can’t crack the dreaded algorithm. Please share, every little helps!
I.ll always remember the stage curtain opening at Reading 83 with Fish standing there with the make-up on and the band going into Grendel..total theatre.
I love his honesty. I’ve always loved that about him though I felt in this interview that he was searching and what’s great is if you listen to the update interview he’s found what he was searching for. That made me v happy to know. ua-cam.com/video/9qXBobbM6mc/v-deo.htmlsi=6u_lqw31iqvGNm04
Enjoyed the interview. I remember buying the live album Real to Reel in the mid 80s. It was cut-price, and had an interesting cover. I used to listen to it on Saturday mornings; at first I didn't know what to make of it! Gradually I realised they were amazing songs. I really think the Fish era of Marillion was superb, so accomplished. It had everything: music, lyrics and surreal imagery. I was so disappointed when that era ended, but it did feel artistically complete. You couldn't really ask for a better last two albums.
I was a jerk once and emailed fish inappropriately about his song Brother 52. God bless the man, he responded and put me in my place without being a Dick about it. Thanks Again Fish and Apologies
30:00 Maybe that explained why Doug had to leave. Marillion was his band, and he was the bass player (a very good one) and he sang on all the original demos. (As Silmarillion). He knew Fish, so not sure how factual that bit of the story is. Great interview though, thoroughly enjoyed it
Hi Steve, thanks for this great interview. In the old one from 1988, that I saw then, you say Fish had just left Marillion, I think that was not done yet, as he explains during the ITV that they're in the middle of recording a new album, and even says at a moment "it's not a case of leaving the band, I like the band etc...". What was the date of this interview in 1988 ? He left mid-september... All the best ;)
For some reason its labelled as an ITV interview when it was for MTV. From what I remember it was at the time of leaving, he may not have left but he was clearly in the process or it was done but was finalising whatever he had to finalise!
@@popthehistorymakers Thanks for ur answer Steve. Don't you remember when this ITV was recorded ? It would fully answer the question ;) But anyway, the agony of leaving, that's what it was. Even if one can regret it musically, his decision was totally relevant.
@@popthehistorymakers Anyway as you say, the dice were cast ! ;) What I regret sometimes is the musical chemistry that once existed between Fish and Steve Rothery, I was hoping that one day they could get together as a duo, a bit like Page and Plant, just for an album, not under the Marillion banner. You know they both share a taste for folk music for instance, Joni Mitchell and stuff... Tilted Cross is one of Fish's best songs tmho. Thanks again Steve.
...from Raingods... I think it's always difficult when you are defined by a certain era, and your work after that receives less attention - it happens to us all - but it's great that you like that track. Can't imagine the unthinkable happening, might be wrong, if I get an update interview, I'll ask!
Thank you Fish for all the joy you've given me. Blessings on you man. 🙏 🌻
Love this guy, a musical hero of mine since a child , top bloke , top talent
Same here. Love the decision he’s made too!
amazing interview, thanks for it, and long live the Fish!!!!
Thx and hoping to catch up with Fish again soon 😘

Brilliant!
Thanks for this Steve. Great job interviewing the Big Man. I could have listened to this for longer. best wishes.
I love interviewing complex, talented characters who have a big heart - and that is definiteLY the big man FISH. And thank-you.

Really enjoyed the first two videos I’ve stumbled across. What a nice guy Fish is.
Glad you enjoyed them! Plenty more to enjoy - please subscribe then you’ll hear what’s new
The way he says "he was a bit of an arse' is so Dalkeith.
Great insight, thanks to both of you. Got my ticket for Nottingham '24.
Excellent thx!
Interesting honest interview.

But he was a Derek?
Steve…rehearse your questions and stories before the interview. Fish and the audience had to wait endlessly for you to ask a question.

Not sure I'd be able to part with a Genesis album with early Fish lyrics hand written on it!
I wonder if Fish is smoking a joint or is it a cigarette?
Haha pretty sure it’s a normal roll-up
