I met Fish in the Sanderling bar in Glasgow Airport in 1984. He was supposed to be flying into Edinburgh, but for some reason Edinburgh was closed so his plane was diverted and he was waiting for someone to pick him up. He kindly bought me a pint and then I bought him one, by which time his lift turned up. Misplaced childhood had not long been released and I probably bored him because I spent a while telling him how much I enjoyed it. We shook hands as he left and waved goodbye as he went down the escalator. What a great bloke.
Not 1984, it was 85. Typo sorry.
Mr Pardo, I really like Mr Reid and his precise heartfelt input. Thanks.
Thank you guys for ranking the studio albums of Fish.🎤🎸🎵🥁
Great to see this, thanks for sharing this comment on FISH & his great solo work!
I remember, after a Marillion show Fish signing my Marillion "Fugazi" lp sleeve: "To Thony, nr 2 at the end of the bar" ....
Great guy, not only in lenght but esp. in lyrics, music and the wonderfull warm person he is.
FISH, .... I will love & respect you forever.
Thanks for all the beautiful words & melodies and esp. that warm feeling in our hearts.
All the best big bear!
Love & greet from The Netherlands (You know, All the best Freaks are here).
See ya, Thony (Toon) Verhappen.
Fish is from Dalkeith.
I saw him play at Portree (the largest town on Skye) in the autumn of '89. I have to admit, perhaps unfairly, that I really wished his old bandmates were there with him. Nothing lasts forever though.
I drank wine with fish in BBC Scotland once he was on during a scotland game . Lovely guy . My favourite album is his first Virgil in a wilderness of mirrors ,though I-am a fan and I find most of his solo stuff interesting and worthy 💕🏴
Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors is my second favourite album of all time.
I have to ask... what's your favourite of all time?
Yeah, don't leave us guessing here. Out with it!
Oh, I didn't get the notification for the first comment!
My favourite album of all time is Amused to Death by Roger Waters.
@@ShinDSER Excellent choice. Love that album.
@@TranquilityFireReid From lyrics to the music, the best album ever. No album has a greater finale than the Three Wishes/It's a Miracle/Amused to Death combo at the end. One of the most depressing albums in history. But also much too real.
This is even better!
I have all the fish remasters as well..awesome.
Seen fish in Perth on the acoustic tour, stunning and a lot of Glasgow gigs.
Thanks again for this guys..10/10👍👍
Glad to see this video as well.
I have to say I don't have the entire collection but I appreciate what I do have immensely. As for the studio albums I have here it is....
1) Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors
2) Internal Exile
3) Sunsets on Empire
4) Suits
on my soon to order list
Raingods with Zippos
Feast of Consequences
Love your channel guys, blown away at this muscician's catalog! You made me research and listen to him from your Marillion review!
So interesting that you both landed on “Sunsets on Empire” … I never was able to get into it, and I really wanted to and tried very hard. Love how it sounds, but it never moved me. “Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors” is the winner for me.
interesting..Definitely different. my fave Fish as well.
The opening track Johnny Punter I find isnt the best, but the rest of Sunsets is killer. Brother 52 and Jungle ride are my favorite tracks definitely
His best in my opinion is Feast of Consequences
Great video, I've always loved Fish. I enjoy his solo work more than a lot of what he did with Marillion.
Nothing more lovely than a Scottish accent Steven!
Thanks Michelle!
As a Marillion fan I was in for Fish's solo career, and was there for it for at least the first two albums. Saw him live a couple of times. But from Songs From The Mirror onwards, I just couldn't get enthousiastic enough anymore, I had the feeling he just wasn't versatile enough to evolve as a musical artist, while Marillion was going in the opposite direction, constantly reinventing themselves. So I switched sides and never looked back.
I do think that what Peter Gabriel says so many times is true: songwriting matters. Fish is a lyricist, a melody writer, but not a songwriter. He needs others with as much creative input as himself. Marillion had been very wise to not only not search for a Fish mk 2, but also to look for someone who would bring in his own creativity, and expecting the band to be changed as a result. Fish hasn't been so wise. I think Mickey Simmonds has been the best musical director of the Fish-brand for me, at least coming up with the best songs, but maybe that is also because the various creative roles around the Fish material weren't materialized as much yet at the first album, giving Simmonds more creative input. In a way, Tony Banks is the same. I love his music, I own all the solo albums, but he needs a counterweight, and the most ideal counterweight has been Phil Collins, especially as a drummer, in arranging Banks' material injecting a certain freshness into it. Fish is the same: he needs a partner with equal musical power. And he never worked like that again, and couldn't deal with it when he was in Marillion. I think that is why his later material is just always a bit boring to me.
I also never understood why the discrepancy between Fish's singing voice (very high) and talking voice (very low) has always been so big. I do believe that, along with heavy drinking, singing so high all the time has destroyed his voice. I distinctly remember hearing his low voice for the first time, so distinctive! When his voice started to deteriorate, I remember not understanding why for the life of me he never made a change and make songs with his more natural deep voice. Even now, he just lowers the key as much as needed, but never seems to think he could just sing with his talking voice. Although by now, it's too late, his voice is kaputt.
Anyway, you clearly disagree with most of this, which is fine of course.
Sunsets is beyond. Good job. Glad I i'm not the only Freak.
Very enjoyable. Look forward to hearing thoughts on Weltschmerz when it's released. 13th Star is my personal favourite.
Hey Pete and Steven!. Enjoyed that alot!
I'm a massive Fish fan so I watched your rankings with great interest.
Ive seen him (and with Marillion) live many times. I have followed him since the early days of Marillion. I find each album is different and you're both right, there isn't a bad one-They're all great!.. Lyrically he is outstanding, musically his albums are diverse and just so interesting to listen to. I could talk about this guy and his work for all day. Love him!.
This is how I would personally rank the studio albums:
1. Sunsets on Empire
2. Raingods with Zippos
(Although these 2 can change depending on mood)
3.Vigil In the Wilderness of Mirrors
4. Feast of Consequences
5. 13 star
6. Field of crows
7.internal excile
8. Suits
9. Fellini Days.
Great show again guys! Pleasure to watch and listen to it. My top 9: 1. Vigil in the Wilderness of Mirrors, 02. A Feast of Consequences, 3. Sunsets on Empire, 4. Internal Exile, 5. Raingods With Zippos, 6. Fields of Crows, 7. 13th Star, 8. Fellini Days, 9. Suits.
Just finished listening to the new album. WOW! Just incredible. Powerful, poignant, emotional, touching. The lyrics are so well crafted. You just get lost in the layers of amazing musicianship. All wonderfully packaged in a gatefold double lp with breathtaking Mark Wilkinson artwork.
I am a big fan of Fish's early solo output. I haven't followed him much after Fellini Days. He also has some kickass live albums. Sunsets on Empire is my favorite album from him. It beat Marillion's This Strange Engine as my favorite album of the year for 1997.
Very intriguing, being a very large Marillion fan with only Fish, I may give the solo albums a listens now.
Same with me :)
Again top vid guys, heard a few albums but not all i must confess Vigil is my number one love it bought the cassette back in the day and played the s//t out of it the title track,State of mind, gentlemen's excuse me, the voyeur and family business great album keep rockin guys
The Sunsets tour landed in Montreal and I (we the audience) have never laughed as long and as hard at any concert anywhere. He actually humiliated the record company execs sitting in the best seats , making then stand up and sarcastically mocking them like poo. It was simply awesome.
Does Steven still live in his teenage bedroom? Hahaha. Enjoyed your two shows today!
Haha! It's actually my eldest daughter's old bedroom... but the KISS posters are mine! :-)
Toon H Kuitjes don’t we all?
Vigil is the quintesential album, all around lyrics and layers upon what is living in the material world. Weltschmerz is the greatest effort of his career.
Hi a great selection.I been a fan since the first solo album I see him live a few times ,But I really want to see him again before he stops so on the look out for new dates
Fish is one of my favorite artists - back to his prime lyrically over the past several albums. Really excited about the new album.
High wood
Open water
Feast of consequences
What color is God
Shadowplay
Vigil - view from the hill
Hello from Scotland's west coast. Looking forward to his new album Weltschmerz. What I've heard so far bodes well.
Good stuff, you and Steven were busy boys yesterday. Fish is a favorite and has a lot of great variety to his solo output which makes a lot of it fun to listen to as a change of pace !
1 Sunsets on Empire
2 Raingods With Zippos
3 Vigil
4 Internal Exile
5 Suits
6 13th Star
7 Fellini Days
8 Field of Crows
I also do not own nor have I heard Feast of Consequences. The new album has sounded pretty promising, so I'll be grabbing the deluxe edition of that one and on the hunt for the deluxe version of the Feast album.
I will have to listen to these albums again, love Fish, great storyteller, I would also suggest a ranking sometime of Scottish prog band Pallas, and also Arena.
Love your enthusiasm. I only have Vigil. Don't hate. I'm glad he kept going. Wish I could afford all of the Marillion reissues. Fish (Fesch) as well.
Only just seen this. Interesting. Thanks.
hello from Aberdeen, Scotland ... aka the Granite City ... this was a good listen ... I was one of the lucky ones to see the one and only gig for his 2020 tour (because of covid) at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen in March. His new band were super tight and played the old and new stuff to an exceptional standard (recorded audio for posterity on phone) Great great show ... the new album could be a classic ... ordered the deluxe which is out this coming week ... the "Fish on Friday" facebook sessions have set the album up nicely ... do check it out folks ... he is releasing it himself so has total control ... but won't get credit in the charts (although it could be on Uk top 10 / top 5 territory) The album reviews are generally 8 or 9 out of 10 star reviews. Check out all the deluxe CD versions - you can get from his website. Recommended CD to check out is the acoustic Communion 2CD live set ... p.s. he also did a 50 minute EP in 2019 setting up the new CD ... versions have evolved A LOT since the EP ...
As a Scot I have to compliment you on your Scottish Accent Pete! I am a huge Fish Fan and the one time I met him I asked him when his next album would be out. That album ,Field of Crows, arrived eventually. He does take great care and puts a lot of himself into these albums. My ranking1. Sunsets 2.Vigil 3. Feast 4. Rain gods 5. 13 th Star 6.Fellini Days 7. Field of Crows 8. Internal Exile 9. Suits
I agree that Sunsets On Empire would be my number 1 also, with the Prog Prince SW (as termed by Fish at the time) involved it is head and shoulders above the others for me. and I love them all
Feast of consequences is such a good album. Probably my second favourite after vigil.
Dear Pete . when you do split screen programmes you are always on the right of the screen (if that helps !!!) keep putting out the great content !
Hi Pete and Steven, been watching your SOT videos for ages but never made the time to thank you for the hours of entertainment you've provided. When I get home from work and can finally collapse the first thing I do is watch the latest SOT videos so cheers for supplying my daily fix of metal, rock and prog 👍🏻. I'm guilty of listening to the Fish era Marillion albums back in the day and then after the split totally losing track of them both but i was more of a metalhead than a prog fan back then so the Fish and Marillion album ranking videos have helped to reignite my proggy fire. So could I ask a question guys? If you were to combine the Fish and Marillion discographies which would be your top 5 albums? And by the way, you both fucked up, Fugazi should be much higher on your lists 😉
You guys nailed my #1 and #2. Sunsets is epic. Vigil is masterful.
I have seen Fish several times. One of this shows from October 1995 has been later published as official bootleg album "Krakow".
I saw Fish once, and it was at NEARfest. I believe it was during the 13th Star tour. Good show.
My top 5.
1. Feast - Pete, buy in today it's amazing.
2. Vigil - immense songs and artwork
3. Internal Exile - Another brill album.Just Good Friends.
4. Sunsets on Empire - great opening tracks.
5 Songs from the Mirror - can I choose this?! I just love it.
When you saw Fish in NYC it was the R W/ZIPPOS tour. He came to the states for John Wesleys wedding in Fla. and booked a handful of shpws in the Northeast. I saw him in Philly the nite before and he was very sick with a virus but being the trooper.....that's partially the reason he sounded below par. If you have the live Candlelight in Fog cd, Fish has a little write up about it in the accompanying booklet. The Mike guy he teases on the cd was with our group. [of course]
Only just discovered this video, so mine is a top 10....
1 - Feast Of Consequences
2 - Weltschmerz
3 - Suits
4 - Vigil
5 - Sunsets
6 - Field Of Crows
7 - Fellini Days
8 - Raingods
9 - 13th Star
10 - Internal Exile
Thanks for this! I just ordered Weltschmerz from him, and I've been going back and filling in the gaps on things of his that I've missed. I'd be curious where you both rank Wetschmerz now that you've lived with it a while.
Impossible to rank. His music is one of a kind. Poetic progpop. Deep Dark beautiful .
Top 3:
Sunsets on Empire
Raingods with Zippos
Fellini Days
I’ve followed him since Scrip For a Jesters Tears
Strange, for being a big Marillion fan, I don't know much of Fish's solo stuff. All I've owned are:
2) Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors
1) Internal Exile (I used to have a GIANT subway poster of the US cover. So cool.)
Now I'm going to go order some of the ones I don't have.
Thanks, guys!
So so glad you covered Fish and Marillion. Thanks so much Pete. I have to dig out my Fish albums. Have you had an in depth discussion of Yes? I can't remember!!
Yes, we've done numerous shows on Yes.
Cheers Pete. You've done so many shows, no wonder I forgot!! Thanks for the Fish episode!! Amazing.
That was a corker. Great catalog. Great artist. Totally agree on your #1
Fish just has prensence and charater - even when he had a bad day, He can touch you live...
1.Vigil In the Wilderness of Mirrors (This is ProgFolk!)
2. Sunsets on Empire (Underrated, and dark)
3. Feast of Consequences (Love this one, especial the seconed half)
4. A Parley with angels EP (Well the 3 songs are longer than some records...and all great)
5. Field of crows (Seen him on this tour The Field and scattering crows are top ten songs for me)
6. 13 star (The more melodic songs are top, the rockers work better live ... seen him open concert with circle line)
7. Suits (Realy has grown on me... Row Meat is in my top 10...)
8.internal excile (The one that lost the most... The versions on the Virgil that were reorded bevor are far better...)
9. Raingods with Zippos (There are moment´s but... not even the long track workes as an compleat track... an album of nice parts that just dont work together)
10. Fellini Days (3D and Pilgrams adress are great, maybe clock moveses sideways, don´t like the rest of it)
My top 8 :
1. Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors
2. Sunsets on empire
3. Raingods with Zippos
4. 13th star
5. Field of crows
6. Internal exile
7. Suits
8. Fellini days
don't got Feast...
I LoveMarillion and Fish, they came many times to my country (Argentina) And Fish played a gig in my school, not many people can say that, I agree with your ranking mostlty
Thanks very much
Can I ask you to make a Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry ranking?
Regards from Buenos Aires
I absolutely love Vigil in a wilderness of mirrors, so so good. Internal exile and Sunsets on Empire are also great albums these three sticks out the rest is good but not like these they are truly amazing.
Yep, my top 3 as well, followed in 4th by 2013's Feast.
Great countdown guys. I agree, you can’t define Fish’s music, it’s rock, but supersedes definition.
Need to do this for Phish!!
not many Phish fans in the " SOT" community. But Im with you, Probably the best live band in the world, and has been the best Live band in the world for the last 25 yrs.. But don't tell anybody..
Their new album is really good!
yeah same top 2 as steve , fish is a genius, can't wait for the new one, been getting tasters on his fish on friday show on fb , like what i've heard so far a lot
Fish performed at BB King's in NYC in 2008. Last time I saw him play
Nice Video Pete : )
I like your number one too.
My number would be Raingods...
For me, if you can't classify it. That almost just means prog anyway, progressed as in different as in badass as in fucking admirable. Fantastic
1.) Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors
2.) Raingods With Zippos
3.) Internal Exile
4.) 13th Star
5.) Sunsets On Empire
5 Internal Exile. 4 Weltzschmerz. 3 13th Star. 2 Sunsets on empire. 1 Vigil in a wilderness of mirrors.
Raingods with zippos everyday of the week for me is his top studio album
Imo "plague of ghosts" is Prog...
Man with a Stick👍
Very interesting ranking and love the top two bets. I do not have A feast of Consequences..Went online to buy one and found it is hard to get, It only came out in 2013? s/h on Amazon is £33. Bit sad it is not available now as do not like paying over the odds for CD's.
SUITS is great! Definitely my favorite, followed by Sunsets on Empire. Those two albums released next to each other.
10. Field of Crows, 9. Rain Gods, 8. Suits, 7. Fellini Days, 6. Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors, 5. 13th Star, 4. Feast of Consequences, 3. Sunsets on Empire, 2. Weltschmerz, 1. Internal Exile. I think his voice and health problems also should be bourne in mind, not to mention his up and down personal life... Was at the Glasgow gigs for Feast, 13th Star, etc also.
Communion very good
Rain gods with zippos . First solo fantastic.
Please Please Please do a ranking of Steve Hackett's solo discography!!!
I second this!
I'd love to see you guys rank Mostly Autumn albums. There's a Fish connection there.
Steve has as many cool T-shirts as he does CDs! Hahaha, yes his bedroom looks like mine when I was a kid, it's just that some people won't grow up.
Thanks to the both of you again, can we keep the Scottish theme going. And rank the albums of, The Proclaimers?
1) Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors
2) Sunsets on Empire
3) Raingods with Zippos
4) Internal Exile
5) 13 Star
6) A Feast of Consequences
7) Fellini Days
8) Weltschmerz
I have the first 5 or so albums. I really the first two the best. I have not listened to the others as much.
Wow I never knew I had the UK cover of Internal Exile
I'm going to listen to some Fish.
Been getting into Phish lately..
A Feast of Consequences is my favorite
What about swedish prog metal legend Pain of Salvation ? The band got a new album in september that will be a great idea for a ranking ! Symphonic metal Therion ,Steve Vai , Orphaned Land ! Keep the great work .
In my opinion, anything Steven Wilaon touches turns to gold. So, I'm going to check out sunsets on Empire. Also, really excited for the Haken show! That would be a really tough ranking for me.
Agreed...Steven Wilson🎼👍
10. Field of Crows 9. Fellini Days 8. Suits 7. Weltschmerz 6. 13th Star 5. Internal Exile 4. Raingods with Zippos 3. Feast of Consequences 2. Vigil 1. Sunsets on Empire.
I think only one of the early Fish albums was released here in the States.?Internal Exile, but the cover was different.
p.s. and check out BOTH videos for Garden of Remembrance ... the music one .... and the "making of ...."
How you cant own The Feast Album? Top 3 with Wilderness and Internal!
My wish for a ranking : Godflesh !
Don't have anything by them, sorry.
Any album that was produced under the record label, A&M.
An original purity resides in a Fish composition.
LOVE ALL THE FISH SOLO CD'S , BUT SUNSETS WOULD HAVE TO BE 1ST
Vigil, Feast and Weltschmerz
Fish..?? Fesh??.. I'm sticking with Phish!!
Barclay James harvest please
Next ranking the studio albums of ,.. PAIN OF SALVATION !
Come on Pete, Black Crowes
Don't have much of their catalog, sorry.
Not a word on the song he co-wrote with Rick Astley!?
Sunsets....
I have best double albums compilations yin and yang
A feast of consequences is certainly prog.
I always wonder how much Fish was influenced by Roger Chapman of Family...
I prefer Fish solo to Marillion without Fish
Steven has a funny accent. Where does he come from?
I come from about 40 or 50 miles away from where Fish comes from!
