    Thanks for the recent mention of the M5 table saw insert having an "intentional" bend at the east/west center line - which, when used properly, allows the insert to rest flush with the table at both ends. I've been doing it wrong for 40 years - always promising myself to "make up a shim someday" . Now I don't have to.

    Scott, you spoke about the longevity of the set you have, sharpening as needed. Do you sharpen your own blades or do you have them professionally done? Thanks again for a very informative video. The Shopsmith committee really benefits from the knowledge you share.

      I suggest Googling “Saw sharpening in (your city)” and see what comes up. There are a few people that you can ship your blades to, but that’s where I would start. Also, if you have a woodworking store in your area, such as Woodcraft, or Rockler or even a good hardware store, they may know of someone that they trust.

    Great video as always, what a difference between the wobble in the stack, I don’t have a carbide but I can see the difference between my datos and rabbits and what you did with the carbide. Going to have to set some money aside

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  3 роки тому

      Hey Dave. I think the two biggest differences are that on a wobble dado you only ever have a single tooth cutting the edge of the dado or groove. Cutting with the grain is usually OK, but once you cut across the grain it introduce plywood all bets are off. The other difference is the quality and flatness of the bottom of the cut. If it is covered it doesn’t really matter, but I’d it is exposed, such as on a box joint or a through dado then the stackable set really shines. Scott

    Very informative Scott. I have the 6-inch CMT stacked dado set and I am very pleased with it. I also like the CMT saw blades and router bits. Question have you ever had the set screw come out while operating? That happened to me during lathe turning the other day. Mine is a used Mark and I noticed that the screw when set was way down in the hole. Is it possible there was not enough surface contact for the screw. I have no idea where the set screw ended up.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  3 роки тому

      It's a rare occurrence, but yes, it has happened. When it does I tighten the set screw and make extra sure to keep an eye on it. If it loosens again I immediately replace it. If it happens again, and it rarely does, I have been known to drill and tap a fresh hole. That's a last ditch effort, though. Scott

    I noticed you reducing blade speed before switching off your machine, and increasing speed after turning it on. I’ve had a Mark V since the mid 70’s, and my method has been to switch on, and set arbor speed before putting a blade, disk, or cutter on, then turn off, and mount the tool. I make my cut, and turn off. My thinking was to minimize wear on the speed adjust mechanism by changing speeds under no-load conditions. I’m guessing you speed up and slow down under load to reduce strain on the motor at start and stop. I’m wondering if Shopsmith recommends one or the other, and which approach might lead to a need for headstock service sooner?

    • @MyGrowthRings

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  3 роки тому +1

      Good question, Blair. You only use the thick washer when dadoing with a very narrow stack. If you get too thin you’ll run out of threads before the nut is tight. You still installed the cupped washer, then the blades, then the second cupped washer and then the spacer, the lounged washer then finally the nut. Scott

    Learning so much. I noticed that you always tighten the saw and dado arbors with the arbor installed on the quill shaft. I always tighten the arbor nuts on my bench and then install the arbor on the quill shaft. Is there any harm in doing it this way?

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  3 роки тому +1

      No harm at all. I get a pretty bad cut tightening the arbor nut on a Shopsmith saw arbor back in the '80s when the wrench slipped and I've been tightening them this way ever since. Also, back in those days the wrench was shorter and had a big bend in it, and those two characteristics contributed to my injury. I love the longer wrench that they make today. Good observation.
