What is the strange history of Sum 41? Some of what I talk about:
    * Sum 41's debut "Half Hour Of Power," first album "All Killer No Filler," and breakthrough pop-punk songs like "Fat Lip" and "In Too Deep"
    * The classic lineup of Deryck Whibley, Steveo, Cone and Dave Brownsound
    * When Sum 41 went metal with "Does This Look Infected" and "Chuck," including singles like "The Hell Song" and "We're All To Blame"
    * The departure of Dave Brownsound, "Underclass Hero" and Deryck's marriage to Avril Lavigne
    * "Screaming Bloody Murder," the return of Dave Brownsound, "13 Voices" and "Order In Decline"

I don’t think they’ve made a single album I dislike, though I prefer their darker stuff, and DTLI is probably one of my favorite pop punk albums of all time. "Summer" got me into Sum 41 and I've LOVED the metal sound the band has focused on throughout their career. Though I still enjoy when Deryck gives us another softer song like "Never There" or the acoustic version of "Breaking The Chain". My favorite Sum 41 song will always be "Noots". But I would put "Chuck", "13 Voices", and "Does This Look Infected?" in my top 3 albums.
    Thanks for the video!

Screaming bloody murderer is their most special record. Unique sound, powerful, with heavy stories behind it. As far as I know, it's also Deryck's favourite one too. But their record label ruined the whole situation: the album got zero marketing, just one song had an official music video and the brand broke up with the record company after that. I wouldn't say that it was their best album, but if I have to choose a Sum 41 record I usually end up listening to this one. Somehow it's catch you, if you let it.

When you mentioned that Sum 41 are innovative and influential because of the fusion of pop punk and metal with a little bit of rap, I felt that I agree but immediately thought of Zebrahead which is straight up a band that fuses even more genres, they have a singing lead vocalist and a rapper (pop punk, rapcore, heavy and thrash metal, ska punk), and they never got the attention they deserved and I'm not even sure If you know Zebrahead, because I never heard you mention them ever before. Great vid, it wasn’t until watching this that I realized how important Sum 41 was in my gradual slide into metal. When this came out I was like 13 y/o suburban skater kid listening to Green Day, Blink, and that whole scene, but when I got my hands on AKNF it was still pop punk but it had this extra edge over similar bands. I didn’t understand what it is but I loved it, and even though it was a joke song I used to rock out to Pain For Pleasure all the time. This is getting long but along with System of a Down they were some of my first real tastes of that kinda more classic era metal so that I was fully prepared to fall in love instantly when I got my hands on Slayer’s “South Of Heaven” album.

I met Dave in the mid 2000s, we got into a conversation about “pain for pleasure” and I encouraged him to do an entire album in that genre. He said he was trying to influence the band to move in that direction while they wanted to “play it safe”, Dave’s words. He told me he was planning his exit from Sum to start a metal band. I was surprised when it actually happened.

They were my introduction to "heavier" music and blueprint for me being a "skater" (despite never being actually good at skating) and playing in my first band. They layed the foundation for me to learn guitar and bass and being in a band was a huge confidence boost for me as a 13-16 yr old. I really like to look back to that time.
