- I try to make a canoe from plywood!
Plans for the Quick Canoe: bit.ly/quick-c...

Plans and epoxy were provided to me, though I was not paid to promote them.
I decided to make a cheap canoe, so I started looking around online. I found a few plans for making plywood canoes and finally settled on the Quick Canoe 155 designed by Michael Storer. Apparently it can be built in a week, however I took a lot longer than that, likely because I spent so much time trying to make it look pretty :)
This is not a tutorial, more just a look at how I did things.
A couple things to note:
It is still possible to give multiple coats of epoxy even after the original coat of epoxy has fully cured, but it does mean that the first layer of epoxy will need to be sanded before recoating. The wet on wet technique I used reduces sanding and improves surface smoothness.
The wood I used, in the end, was Fir, which, I have been told checks easily over time, and therefore might not be the best wood choice, however, it was all I could find that was actually waterproof. It also was quite porous and soaked up a lot of epoxy when I was coating it, which would have made the final canoe a bit heavier.
I'm not sure if it was clear, but the outwales get dry-fitted first and then when the glue is applied (probably better to apply it to the outwale than the side of the canoe) the outwale gets screwed back into the same holes.

So many videos like this don't actually go into the details of what they're doing, they just show everything in time lapse. This is such a great video.
Appreciate the comment, and I can't agree more!
Ikr If I ever want to build a canoe I feel I totally can!
This is the best life I have every seen and it has changed my video forever.
😁
Do you have learning disability ?
Everything about this video is great, the way you talk, the way you bring your loved ones into, especially your grandfather, without his equipment, you're gonna do a lot more work 😊, the way you put your mistakes in the video, the way you find solutions in every situation, most importantly, the way you try your best for getting the best results, either give more time or expenses, and they way you show us on having fun with your results at the end with your family. Love it very much.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
You made me aware that practical and art and the knowledge to put them together are gifts both to you the maker and to all of us who watch your videos. Thank you.
Wow, thank you so much for the beautiful words. ❤️
Dude, your canoe looks really incredible, and I'm so impressed with the fact that you built it yourself. It really is impressive! Nice job.
Thanks a ton!
I have never seen a better plywood canoe video
Thanks!

🙏
Such a beautiful canoe. I hope your family enjoys it for years to come. You definitely made it look like something doable.
Thanks, I think it'll last a good long time (especially since it's only warm enough to use 4 month of the year here:)

Lovely portrait of sanding. God bless anyone who sticks with that chore.
And thanks for the video, I was just looking for a way to get out to my mooring for the boat and after I checked if I could walk on water, figured I needed a not-too-wide yoke of some sort.
That canoe you made looks ideal to copy so think I might justy try that
I hadn't realized before that a plywood canoe was missing from my life. Excellent video!
Thanks you!!
This video doesn't changed my life at all, but you do once in a while since i purchased your bundle of patterns and i suscribed to your vids. Great maker, good video maker and what i suppose a big heart in that chest and a wholesome man!
Awww, you're too kind. Glad you are getting value from that bundle too!! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment❤️
This is the best video I have ever seen and it has changed my life forever.
😁 I knew it would!!
This is the best video to learn how to do the famous "broken-legged spider hand-crawling plywood straight edge" technique !
It has definitely changed my life forever !
With love, from forever grateful English teacher from France, who needed this trick for some reason...
Thanks for watching, and glad I could broaden your list of skills to include the spider hand technique!!
I realize this video is over three years old, but I feel like it’s never too late to tell someone “nice job”. The canoe looks great and I love the way you edited the video with the step-by-step voice over. Lastly, I really enjoyed your ingenuity throughout the project.
Thanks so much!!... and I agree, it's never too late:)
I appreciate your work so much because it makes these complicated projects feel actually within my reach! Thanks for re-uploading this one!
You're very welcome! Thanks for re-watching it:)

Such an enjoyable build. And a beautiful canoe!
Thanks Odin!
are you planning on building a canoe odin :)
You are the only guy who tested his plywood before installing it. Commendable very good
Amazing work! This is what the real man is, he made boat by his hands and his family happy. Very beautiful canoe. Thanks for video. Sergei (Saint-Petersburg, Russia)
Nice job. This simple clean design is basically a narrow dory, a proven seaworthy concept, and you built her to last. Congrats on this success.
If you squared off the stern and reinforced it, you'd be able to put a small outboard on her. As light as she is, you could probably get her to plane with 5hp or less.
This is an amazing video. Helps to appreciate just how much time and work goes into making a beautiful canoe like this one. It also helps to understand the price of them and the value they hold if built well.
Yeah, we seem to have lost an appreciation for fine craftsmanship in our world of mass produced thingies. Sometimes it's so good to make something with your own hands and appreciate the value of that.
Always love watching a build come together.
Thanks for watching! Much appreciated.
I shared this on my facebook timeline. Tagged my kids so they can make one so they can make fun memories with their kids and/or grandkids. Thanks so much!

Wow! That's cool:)
Wow! Fantastic video!!! You are an extremely determined person and the canoe is gorgeous. I’ll be sure to buy waterproof plywood if/when I attempt to make this canoe. Great job!
Yep, always good to check the ply first. Lesson learned. Thanks for watching!!
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only DIY’er that sometimes has NO idea what I’m doing, but really enjoy laughing about it.
Hehe, I think that's most DIY'ers! the main thing is learning from our mistakes and keep on trying:)
That turned out beautiful. Very educational, and very entertaining. You would make an awesome teacher.
Wow, thank you! My wife its a teacher. Hats off to all the teachers out there, you have such an important, also hard job!
Chris, your videos are the best! Even if I don't need to make whatever you are making, I always watch the video from beginning to end.
I am sure that, if I DID make something from one of your videos, it would indeed change my life!
Awww, that's so nice, thanks for watching my vids:)
This is the best video of a plywood canoe I have watched many thanks Mick.
I can't imagine a future where I would build this, but it was captivating viewing, and I enjoyed watching it. Life changing.
Thanks for watching!
Finished my Storer Quick canoe yesterday. Your video gave me the confidence to build it and helped alot for some of the details. Watched it quite a few times. I also liked the the idea of the triangular wood blocks in bow and stern in order to drill a hole for some handles and copied that. Thanks for your great video!
Awww, nice!! Have fun paddling!
That is really AWESOME! Great job, looks beautiful, and your family looks like they are enjoying all your work, so fun! You are a great dad!
Hi Chris, I love all you videos (you can probably tell from my previous comments lol) and when you had to start over I just wanted to give you a hug! I think you’re a huge inspiration to those of us who want to “give it a go” and I never get tired hearing you talking... you still have the calmest, most relaxing voice on UA-cam 😊. I hope you get another 1.5M views for this video. Sending joy and laughter to you and your family. Ps please can you do another song like “aviator”... it just radiates joy (and your family are totally awesome and talented). Keep smiling.
Awww, thanks so much Ian, and I am so glad my videos can encourage people to give it a go. I've been "giving it a go" my whole life and have learned so much both from failures and successes. Probably more from failures:) Anyways, d=so good to hear from you, and you never know, we might have another song or two in us:)
Glad to help Michael and you :)
Thanks heaps!
Thank you Marea!
"Cheap" isn't the case anymore, not with the price of lumber where it's at. Lol. Nice job!
This is the best video I have ever seen in my life, and it has changed my life forever!
Hehe, yeah, I haven't looked, but sounds like not a great time to be making stuff out of wood.
I built one of these years ago. They are nice boats. One thing that I would stress is to clean all the dust off the sides and bottom before trying to duct tape them together. I did not at first and, of course, the tape did not stick. The additional zip ties are a good idea. As I understand Michaels idea for this was to have a quickly built boat for when you find yourself wanting a boat and don't have one available, and it can be built very quickly and very cheaply if you are looking for a temporary boat, or, like this fellow did, you can make a really nice almost work of art. Well done Lost Wax 2
This was great to watch. I actually built one of these but had to leave it in my old workshop. Just a tip, that first plywood you used would have been fine as you are covering it with Epoxy and paint. This Marine ply is great stuff but heavily overrated. It just isn't needed for a canoe.
Really great to watch what you did and happy boating!
For a guy that's not a professional woodworker, you sure do make a nice canoe. Great job!
Thank you very much!
Always a big fan of Chris's videos
Thanks Todd!
Love this! Who doesn't need a magnificent quick canoe? This just hit my NEED list of things I must make.
Totally.
Excellent video , and beautiful canoe too.
Probably the best video on how to build a simple plywood canoe I have found.
Take a bow sir , for sharing , it`s a job very well done !
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!
Just as good as Xyla Foxlin's canoe video. Really love the clear, simple explanation of steps involved. Also, 'butt straps!'
Hey thanks! Love those cedar strip canoes!
What you've done is a professional kind of thing - really superb!
Loved this upload the first time and enjoyed it again love and respect my friend
Thanks for coming back and giving it another watch!
I canoe't believe how good this is! This boat looks water-tight!
Yep, it's totally leakproof and solid. and paddles well to boot!

Michael Storer, who is the designer of the Quick Canoe, is a brilliant guy, he lives in the Phillipines and spends time teaching locals how build sailboats and sail them. 🙏

Thank you so much for this video. I'm a Canadian in New Zealand I built the same canoe because of this video. Thank you so much. 😀👍
Awww, nice! We never got to New Zealand when we lived in Australia, but would have loved to! Have fun in your canoe:)
Great to see this brilliant video again. I'm glad that it has not disappeared!
Indeed, thanks again Michael for the excellent plans and for answering all my questions during the build.

I'll never build a canoe, but this guy's innovative techniques are fun to watch! My Dad built a boat in our garage, so I'm pretty sure this will work, too.
Thanks for watching!
I love your use of period materials and primitive building techniques.
Thanks!!
Awesome! I have made a number of dugout canoes, but I never have built one. Until now...
Go for it!
Life changing- best plywood canoe video ever!
Well, I now know the next boat I'm going to build, especially since I saw the outriggers and sailing rig!
Fun!!
This is a great video, its cool that you can just make something very practical like this in your garage out of pretty basic materials
Totally. So much you can do with even just a jigsaw and a drill.
This video needs waaaaay more views
Well, thanks for adding one more!
Really well filmed and explained, great plan for a great little boat.
Many thanks!

Well done, you said you're not a professional wood worker, but hats off for your skills, man, I can only learn from that. More video's please :)
Thank you!!
I was literally stuck watching the whole video!! this was absolutely amazing bro!!!!!! if I had any of these tools and space, I would be exactly like this! can't wait to buy my first house next year with my lovely wife!
Glad you liked it, and I hope you can get the perfect house!
So impressive Chris! Amazing how you were able to create that from plywood! 🤩👍
Yes, gloves ARE better than slivers. T likes to get slivers. He does it on purpose. 🤷♀️🤦♀️
Hmmm, interesting..... I've never met someone who actually likes splinters......until now.
As an experienced woodworker, I think you did a great job. And as I'm sure you have found out always remember, half of woodworking is sanding.
Indeed it is!!
most underrated channel.
This video is really cool. Makes me wonder what else can be done with such methods.
Well, I am thinking about maybe making a tiny sailboat this summer so stay tuned:)
Yet another amazing "how to" from Chris. His personable style and attention to detail is always great and then there's the dry humor, ("spider finger crawl, with a broken leg", LOL). While I've made a lot of stuff from his patterns they're usually made of foam, this'll be a chance to hone my nearly non-existent wood working skills.... and who doesn't need a quick canoe!! Thanks for expanding my horizons Chris!! (and thanks to Michael for capturing Chris' imagination!!)
Wow, what a bunch of nice things to say. Thanks for watching!
Really nice build, thanks for showing all the steps including the awkward ones ("mouth-drawn line"...) Great work!
Glad you liked it!
Satisfying to watch, and even more satisfying to paddle around in something you made yourself!
So satisfying!
I think I will attempt making this as a test to see if I'm ready to build my own cedarstrip canoe
Great Video, and for someone who isn't a woodworker, that is awesome work. Very impressed with this. I think I need to have a go. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you!!
pretty amazing, your family is adorable
Awww, thanks!
this is amazing! I can't believe I just watched you MAKE a BOAT!
Peanut butter on toast-add cheese- and or other condiment you like. YUM! Just make sure you don't pick up that epoxy by mistake!
But t that's probably the nicest canoe iv seen built!
This is excellent - I can see another project being added to my list of “Things I Need”

lovely build! the care on the build shows
Awesome instructional video. Informative with a side of humour. 🌞
Glad you enjoyed it!
Others: no, you can't make a boat out of plywood
Chris: haha, excellently crafted plywood canoe go brr
Awesome.
9:55 Probably could have / should have routed a radius on that lift-point- just a thought.
Nice project. I can see myself building a canoe like this. I am an off-and-on professional woodworker and I can see that as a very good design for a user-friendly family canoe being that it's flat bottomed and thereby has some stability over a rounded chine canoe.
As a woodworker, building a run of these with particular cosmetic and esthetic alterations seems like it would be a sensible effort. I have made boat bottoms in the past from 8' plywood. Athough from a cost perspective it might be hard to justify a reasonable selling price based on labor time, the availability of ACX and marine AAX is not what it used to be as you discovered.
Esthetically I would probably choose a non-keyed glued scarf to join the ply halves into 15'5" planks instead of a battened butt joint. You can readily plane these halves using a reverse fold. Not much more work than a batten over a butt, and no interruptions in the sole.
Another visual improvement you might consider for your next canoe is in the fiberglass tape application. What you did here is fine structurally. Nevertheless, you might find it less time consuming to apply the tape, and then use matt over that (width about 10"?) to extend the bulky edge of the tape further into the bottoms of the sole. This will allow an easier time fairing the transition, offer an added durability factor, while permitting the use of your random orbit sander to initialize the bulk of the work.
I hope you will be making more boats!
Thanks for the great feedback, I'm sure that'll be helpful for others considering a build like this. You are right, it would be nice to have a more comfortable place to hold the canoe while carrying, and rounding off those bits of wood would help. That is one of the main reasons I added handles to my sailboat build, and even though it weighs the same, carrying it feels like half the work.
Great video of Quick Canoe, I would say it is the best one on YT.👍
I am considering building QC for my family of 4. Do you maybe have measurements where you have positioned your seats? It seems to me that on the original plan they are too close to each other. Your more spaced-out position gives more balance with two paddlers and more space for the equipment and kids in the middle.
Fantastic video and a great sense of humor. Thanks for making it.
I hope you upload more videos to this channel too! cheers!
I'll try, I do haver a few things I'd like to make that don't fit on my other channel. The problem is finding the time.......
Very interesting... now I know I will never make a boat, but I know where to come if I should decide to do so.
Rewatching to help after relocation of the video. Great job 👏
Sounds like we just transplanted a tree:) Thanks for the watch and comment!
Wow, Interesting design and looks like fun to make.
Fun, with a lot of not so fun sanding thrown in for good measure😁
