This was a great step by step. I have an older cedar strip with a couple holes that I am about to renew and feeling daunted by going from simple woodworking to fiberglassing over the hard work. Your statement there really struck home to where my stress is. Nice to know I'm not the only one.
I built our first cedar strip canoe in 1992. It was a 20’ E. M. White design. We have canoed many expeditions with it in many kinds of waters. I built our 17’ canoe 24 years ago and it has been on many adventures. I am now building an 18’ cedar strip canoe for my wife. She loves the 20’ canoe but it weighs 100#. I am building this one as light as I can.
Looked like a lot of knots in the cedar, especially some large ones. Did you cut out bad spots and scarf joint any of the strips to limit waste and eliminate weaks spots in wood, or did you figure the epoxy would take care of it all?
Looks amazing! Any tips&tricks on what to do to don't do? You've mentioned a few don'ts but maybe you've learned about some other stuff now that it is done?
Thank you and thanks for watching. I wish I would have done a better job putting on the bead and cove, made sure the strips were tighter when putting them on the forms, been a little more careful sanding the strips, wipe off epoxy drips and runs before it dries, I think that might be it
@@seamancustombuilds2553 Thank you for your answer! I will take these into account once I start building my first wooden canoe. I am building one from fiberglass at the moment, but I don't like the material
@@seamancustombuilds2553 just clamps, I first tried staples but they would pull out when I bent the strip, was using T50 9/16 staples, do the sprips have to lay flat ?
@@carlhornback5087 Yes, or fairing will be a nightmare and you will thin the core too much in doing so. Use what even tools you need to flatten them. I glue a strip on the station mould back from the edge then install a clamp. I have also used rubber bands to do the same. I cut up old bike tubes for rubber bands.
I am trying to find somebody that could build me a canoe, coffee table. Please let me know if that is something that you would be interested in talking about

I'm having a problem getting the strips to lay flat on the stations, Any help
Are you stapling or using clamps?

Cool
How many hours do you think it took to make the canoe ?
Thanks
I had a little over 200 hours in it, thanks for watching
👏👏👏👏👏perfect
Looks fantastic. Do you have a weight on it?
Thanks, it’s 64lbs
Can I use Red Elm lumber?
I don’t see why not, I don’t know how the weight would compare but would probably be beautiful
Elm is good for bending. And you can accent with the sapwood.
I like this
Thanks!
How do I hire you guys to build my Cedar Strip Canoe?
What is the weight about ?
It weights 64lbs

Thanks for watching, sorry I’m not taking on any commissioned projects
all that work and you don't bother to use clear cedar?
I been wanting start making them. Where can I get the planes
👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Thanks for watching
I bet you wish you had never used epoxy to fill gaps. You can think Bear mountain boats for that
I would like to pay for one of cash up front much better to buy one hand built than to buy one from Bass Pros shop
Buulo
Nice canoe on the water.
Deadly chemtrails in the sky.
brave putting epoxy on without masks
Haha seaman
Gregkosinski2303 is laughing at you he called you seaman
Why is the thumbnail the canoe full of water 🤣🤣
It’s not full of water, that’s the shine of the varnish
