    Boston 1, not a bad song on it. Tom Scholz is the crazy talented genius founder, and played the majority of instruments on this album, along with being the primary songwriter. He has a Masters degree from MIT and built his own recording studio where he did all the demos that became this album. He also holds patents for guitar pedals he's designed and built. Tom did not mix this record in his basement. Nor did Tom play all of the instruments on every song. Tom was introduced to Brad by Barry back in 1969.
      The Boston debut record was mixed at Westlake Studios in CA on an API console with Tom, producer John Boylan and Warren Dewey doing the mixing, There is no way on earth that Tom would be able to mix and "produce" this record on his Dan Flickinger mixer, his Sculley 12 track 1 inch tape machines and such a paucity of outboard gear such as noise gates, compressors, parametric eq and plate reverb units.
      Barry plays all electric rhythm guitars on Foreplay and Long Time and Barry plays the lead guitar solo on Long time. Fran Sheehan is playing the bass on Foreplay. Let Me Take You Home Tonight was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Sib plays all drum tracks except for Rock and Roll Band which was played by Jim Masdea.
      What specifically makes the Boston debut record "very complex recording"?

  • @CuttinEJ
    @CuttinEJ 2 роки тому +26

    Tom Scholz has a PhD in electrical engineering from MIT. This entire album was recorded and produced in his home basement studio using equipment that he designed and built. How fkng cool is that?!?! I always loved this one because of the metaphor of unhurried foreplay leading up to the main event. 😂 This is an eargasm! 😂

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 Рік тому

      Tom Scholz has a masters in mechanical engineering from MIT. The entire record was not recorded in Toms home studio, and the record was most certainly not produced or mixed in/at/on Toms home studio. There is no way on earth that Toms 12 track Sculley tape machines and his Dan Flickinger mixer and what little outboard gear Tom had at the time could handle the production and mixing duties for this record.
      All of Brads vocals sans the vocals for Let Me Take You Home were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studio C in CA. The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded at The Record Plant LA by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Once complete the record was mixed at one of the studios at Westlake on an API console. The lead solo on Long Time and all of the electric rhythm guitars on both Long Time and Foreplay are Barry Goudreau. Fran Sheehan played base on Foreplay as well.
      If you want to learn more of the real story after hearing tracks that Tom wanted to submit for the record, John Boylan sai that the acoustic instruments were recorded so poorly (Boylan described them as amateurish) that Boylan hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms home studio to teach Tom proper mic technique and how to record acoustic instruments such as drums, acoustic guitars and pianos. At Boylan's directive, Tom rerecorded the acoustic instruments with Sib playing the drums on all songs but one.
      Tom has not been completely honest and transparent regarding who did what and how this record actually came to be. Producer John Boylan gives a far more accurate and objective account of how this record came to be and who did what on it. Barry actually introduced Brad to Tom years before this record was ever made. Barry and Tom played the songs that would eventually be polished up and put on the debut album in a band called Mothers Milk years before this record was actually made.

    The best thing about this, guys (aside from Brad Delp's vocal prowess), is that no synthesizers were used on this. All the sound effects you hear were created using organ, guitar, amplifier, and experimental recording techniques. And this was 1976!

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 Рік тому

      Jubal238 you forgot to mention the clavinet. You can hear the clavinet on Foreplay.
      What specific "experimental recording techniques" did Tom use to record this record ??
      Not a lot of people know this but producer John Boylan hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to teach him proper mic technique and how to record acoustic instruments. This was necessary because the drum tracks that Tom recorded were so poorly done that they were not suitable to be put on the record. Boylan describe the drum tracks that recorded as "amateurish". At Boylan's directive Tom had to re-record all of the drum tracks.
      As for all effects that you hear, Tom did not invent or design the plate reverbs that can plainly be heard on this record

What a thrill ride of a composition. There would be no way a first time listener could predict the shape of most of this song, which is my favourite thing about it. That setup sets up the impact of all that follows. Boston, Foreigner and Journey were all similar in their abilities in that regard.

    They are the absolute kings of straight ahead rock and roll! This is the greatest rock debut album of all time; maybe the greatest debut album of any genre ever. Every song on this album is absolutely fire; not a dog in the bunch. That being said, this is their masterpiece! React to some other Boston; particularly from this album. Everybody loves them! And it's particularly gratifying to see Asia rockin' out to this!

    Boston was founded by Tom Scholz. This is off their debut album. 🔥Scholz had already laid the tracks for most of the instrumentals.
    Brad Delp did vocals. So basically, he had to create a band in order to play his album in front of an audience. A necessary thing to do
    when the recording label you signed with tells you that you are going on tour. 😀🤘🏻

    Boston was my first concert, I counted 19 people on the stage, the front guys were great, but it took a lot of people to pull off this sound. I met the drummer many years later, this was an amazing album the guy that played all the instruments was amazing, and Brad Delp was as good in person as he sounded on the album. They had a monster bong on stage, and smoke barreled out of it, and Brad ran out into the crowd a lot, it was an amazing concert.

    When this titular album came out we either listened to it on LP, cassette tape or 8-track; that was it.
    I remember listening for the 1st time and getting through "More Than A Feeling" and "Peace of Mind", with said mind THOROUGHLY blown, but when "Foreplay" trickled, then BLASTED through the speakers I thought it couldn't get any better. I thought Foreplay was a fade out and not just a fade. However, when "Long Time" started...W.O.W.

    The vocals are all done by one guy - Brad Delp. He does the leads, plus the harmonies. At least on this album. They brought in other singers on later albums but he did pretty much everything here. And Tom Sholz wrote most of the songs, did about 95% of the guitars, all of the bass, and all of the organ. Plus designed sound pedals that did all those special effects you hear on the record. And he did it out of his basement.
    Probably the best example of DIY in rock. Not a huge fan of their entire catalog.but the first album has to be ranked as one of the best debuts on rock.

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 7 місяців тому

      @johnr8095 Fran Sheehan plays bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home not Tom. The only "pedal" that Tom used on this record was the so called 'hyperspace pedal" which is based off of a Echo Plex tape loop echo machine that Tom modified to be controlled with a pedal. Heart and soul of the guitar sound on this record is a Marshall tube amp driven so hard that the power tubes are compressing and clipping naturally and some major eq work to really boost the mids and to roll off the lows. Tom was able to run his Marshall's hard without blowing out his hears or making his neighbors mad at him because he was using a large variable resistor from a theater lighting system to soak up the power coming off of the tube amp before the amplified signal hit the speakers in the Marshall cab. Tom did not start to use devices that would evolve into what became the Rockman until the second record. The core of the guitar sound on this record is all Marshall tube amp and some major eq work
