I agree with some of the comments that Patrick and Emmy sang it very well together. But when Gerald sang it to her on the bridge towards the end.....there was no comparison to him. He owned that part beyond anyone. I just wish she didn't have to pull his mask off.

Gerard Butler was simply amazing and powerful as the phantom and no one could have performed in that intense, dark and sexy way better! And Patrick was also amazing as Emmy! The whole movie is a masterpiece and an extraordinary tribute to Andrew Lloyd Weber's masterpiece!

the new phantom series is designed to pull in younger audiences by making the phantom into a young upstart cool guy but this is a 180 from the original vision which was so effective where the phantom is a cool calculating experienced and controlling fatherly figure.

Gerard is not the best singer in the world, but he has such passion and feeling in his voice. He brought me to tears often throughout the movie. Plus, he is easy on the eyes. Emmy Rossum has a great voice! I wish I could sing like she does.
Great! Now I have two songs that touch me so much I get choked up when they're performed. This one (wow Emmy!) and Susan Tilson as Eponine singing On My Own from Les Mis (lucky to have seen this one live in Chicago during the 90's).
I think that Sir Lloyd Weber has the last rights to all the Great Airs of the Twentieth Century truly a prolific composer!!! All of his melodies are intoxicating and brilliant.

You thought it was odd that Gerard Butler played the Phantom since the character required an older man with an excellent voice? Well, then, he fit's the description! Gerard IS an older man with an AMAZING voice. You don't know what you're saying.
What's crazy about Gerard singing all his parts is that he's not a trained singer. Phantom was the first film he did when he sang his parts, but being from Scotland he has this natural kind of rock tone in his voice as he sings that he used very well in the film
Please don't try to change my opinion. He wasn't the best, but I loved him as the Phantom singing and all. If you're comparing him to the guys who play that role on stage, don't. It's not fair to group him with professional singers. Also, stage and film are two different mediums. Even you're a professional singer, you're going to have people you like and don't like. The Phantom was not a professionally trained singer in the book. He taught himself. Good and bad singing is relative and therefore everyone has their own idea of good and bad singing.

It was because she performed opera professionally ever since she was a child. You should see her in her debut film. Her acting and singing is just too much for words. :)
She sang in the childrens chorus at the Metropolitan Opera in NY from age 7 into her teen years, then took lessons again before she started shooting the film.
