Patricio Dillon I first heard this song in 2000 in a CD store. It was sung by Cliff Richard and Sarah Brightman. At that time, I didn't know it was from Phantom. Totally fell head over heels in love with it.
Definitely. I love Emma Watson but as opposed to her Emmy Rossum is truly a beautiful singer! Just can't listen to the beauty and the beast songs because of all the autotune...
I wish he'd sing more!!! Or do more movie musicals. His voice is SO beautiful, so warm and gentle yet so masculine and powerful. His vocal control is amazing.
@@addicted367 Actually I like Emmy's voice a lot, too! People said it was thin, but I found it clear, sweet, and innocent, and more fitting of Christine than Sarah Brightman's. When I said the rest of the cast weren't so good I guess I mostly meant Gerard ;) I mean he had several sour notes. Emmy never had that.
@@monmothma3358 oh ok gotcha 👍 yeah I have seen comments complaining about how her voice doesn't have enough opera. Well I'm sure if that's what the directors wanted they would have gotten someone else.
“Music of the Night” is the Phantom’s love song to Christine. He sings it all by himself, indicating that he is controlling and possessive towards her, and won’t let her be her own person. “All I Ask of You” is Raoul’s love song to Christine. This is a duet. This indicates that Raoul is encouraging and patient towards Christine, and lets her voice her opinions instead of making her his puppet. No wonder she chose Raoul.
Lolol I thought of this at school when a teacher was trying to get us to focus and said "Just focus. That's all I ask of you" and I kinda laughed really quietly and this has been stuck in my head ever since.
I always had a sinking feeling that Christine was betraying the phantom, that she left his deep devotion to her for a petty boy who gave her flowers and was nice to look at, until I realized just recently that Christine's love for Erik is Stockholm syndrome, and Raul is leading her out of a lifelong deception and swirling nightmare geniusly designed by Erik to trap her. I listened to this song for the millionth time once and realized that until she loved Raul she didn't realize what she had wasn't true.
Many today don't understand what love really is Nora, it is about selflessness, not selfishness, one who truly loves is required by that love to desire what will bring health and happiness to the one they love. Even if it means them being with someone else.
I don’t care what everyone else says about him, I love Raoul. He had such good intentions and just wanted Christine to be safe and comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE how complex Phantom is. But Raoul is just great. (Especially Patrick Wilson)
I so strongly agree. In HS they had my choir group watch this movie and I fell in love. I was an aspiring opera singer at the time and I still consider phantom of the opera my absolute favorite broadway ever. I even wanted to audition for a part till reality kicked in lol. I attempted to watch other vocalists/performers perform this and I didn’t like it.., hated it actually. Their voices sounded good no doubt, but their voices just didn’t suit the character and the vibrato was always so cringe...but then, I went to see the live broadway musical (saw it twice when I visited NYC) and I cried throughout the whole thing lol. You can’t go to NYC and NOT see POTO! Nothing can beat the LIVE version or cast from NYC. (The movie doesn’t count of course. They’re both so different but extremely enjoyable to ME.) I wish I could remember the casts name from NYC but I plan to come back to this comment to give credit to the performers in NYC
How far Patrick Wilson has fallen these days. Now, he's just an actor starring in scare-jump horror bland movies and CGI superhero movie with paper thin emotional stakes.
When you are young and immature, you watch this and think, "Go away Raoul!...Christine and the Phantom belong together!" Then when you grow up, you realize that Raoul really was the good guy and the right choice. The Phantom didn't love her, he was just controlling, abusive, and obsessed. He was always "punishing" her for not doing and being what he wanted. Raoul was kind, giving, patient and forgiving.
That's exactly how I was when I was little, I grew up listening to the music and shipping the phantom and Christine lol. But now I totallyyyy ship these two :))
Kristina Cassandra Zaragoza oh no! I don’t recommend Love Never Dies. As much as I love the music, I hate that everyone was out of character. For example, they only made Raoul a drunkard who is in serious debt to have a reason why Christine should pick the Phantom over Raoul. Also, what Meg did was way out of character as well. Yes, I get that it was an accident, but she wouldn’t be jealous of Christine in the first place. It’s just not like her. Also, I don’t like how the events that occurred in LND doesn’t match with what happened in POTO. Why would they make Christine die at a young age in LND, but in POTO she dies of old age? ALW should not have created LND. To me, it seems like he only made it for money and not to keep the story alive. Because if he did want to keep the story alive, he should have made it make sense. However, instead, he made it into a wattpad fanfiction story. Now, if I view LND as a separate story and POTO never existed, then I would like it. But since that’s not the case, I don’t. So, I like to pretend LND doesn’t exist lol. But once again I still love the music in LND, I just don’t like the story overall.
whutzat the thing is, well first I haven’t watched this in a long time so I kinda forgot the movie but I watch the 25h Anniversary everyday since I bought it bcuz I loved it to much😂 but in one of the scenes in the 25th Anniversary Raoul is pushing Christine to sing something she dosent want to only to Laure the phantom and finally kill him, that’s kinda a reason I like phantom and Christine. Erik (the phantom) was hiding in darkeness all these years and he didn’t know how to tell Christine how much he wants her and loves her in a kind loving way so instead he did this, I’m still a teen so imma wait till I’m a little older to see how I feel abt Christine and phantom and Christine and Raoul. But the thing is in the 25th Anniversary to me it’s so hard to choose weather she should stay with Raul or the phantom same with the movie. Idk if you’ve watched LND but the thing that I love is that Christine is kinda with both of them so if u haven’t watch LND to see what I mean. But I just hate the ending I cried from sadness and a hatred for that ending ughhhhhh. WHY ALW WHYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

I truly admire the tender love between Christine and Raoul. Erik is a wonderful character, but I believe he needed first some introspection or a good therapist in order to know how to love himself first, forgive the past and learn to "give" and not just "take" Christine is totally inspiring, since she could "saw" the very essence of the Phantom, as a human, as a living being, she recognised his inherent beauty and potential of goodness. In a way, Christine really "loved" the Erik, which I understood as the epitome of "love your enemy" and "love one another". That's true compassion. That fuels change in the most damaged people. But nobody is obliged to "save" another one. Christine honored herself and choose her freedom and happiness in Raoul. In the end, Erik let her go, because he realized that their love was pure, and he was trying to possess her while Raoul was risking his life to free her. Love is about appreciation. Thanks for reading... I hope you have a beautiful day and find an uplifting love that makes your soul soar!
Oh wow, you captured everything that goes through my head while listening to that song perfectly! Brilliantly said. Thanks a lot for these wise and kind words.
Kyrios Same here. Almost every time I watched the film I sided with the Phantom. Watched it at the theatre on the weekend, sided with Raoul straight away.
I believe the Phantom's love was only really true at the end when he let her go. He realized the error of his ways, and let her go on being truly happy the rest of her days. This, of course doesn't take a way from how true Raoul is in his love.

phantom has some of the best orchestral scores, when it first debuted it had the largest orchestra in the west end. its my dream to be able to preform pit for this musical
Coolest thing about the movie adaptation is that they were able to use a complete orchestra while the broadway version couldn’t because of space. So the movie is how you are actually supposed to hear the music that Andrew Lloyd Webber composed. It’s amazing.
I never expected such a wonderful comment section with so much love for the healthy relationship out of the two in this story. I was so sick of hearing people defend Erik.
Aaahhh! Everyone being so sad for the man who abuses, kidnaps, and murders when he doesn't get what he wants is exactly why so many people end up in abusive relationships and why it's so hard to get out.
you can pity someone but not agree with their actions.. hes a bad person but still had a tragic life. its no wonder that be abuses and murders when you look at his childhood. i dont think he should end up with christine, but its still sad.
no bro, the movie is made throught a lenz that makes us like the Phantom better than Raoul. the Phantom has a story, he has our sympathy. Raoul has a few lines telling something about who he is. of course we would be sad for the phantom, we can't help it a narrative strategy is not the reason people fall into bad relationships!! wth
Why is everyone hating on Raoul so freaking much. I understand that the phantom hypnotized us with his voice and strong appearance but he takes Christine hostage he doesn't have love for Christine. Unless love to u guys is obsession. Honestly they both have points on my board but Raoul can do much more for her.
I love Raouls character, but I just wanted the Phantom to be happy. Like ever since I was a kid and first saw this, I would always cry at the Phantom because he just wants her love.
Eh . . . . I honestly think Erik can do much more for her. Take away his violent ways--and when he is with Christine, they go away unless his mask is TAKEN OFF WITHOUT HIS PERMISSION (but she could get him to accept himself) and he could give her so much just from his talent itself. Raoul acts like he is the "tough vicomte who doesn't need a second opinion." But I still love this song between them.
Although I love this version of the song, my heart couldn't help but ache for poor Erik seeing the love of his life kiss another man. I could feel his heart being ripped in half.
He wants love. But he doesn't know how to express it. His first and only love, Christine was Raul's. I wish Phantom isn't end up alone though. My poor child, we was never loved. His only ounce of love with given to Christine. Yet she "betrayed" him. I actually watched this live in Auckland earlier in the week. I cried at this scene, cuz I could feel their love. And I completely bawled up when The Phantom was left alone in his dungeon, and sang Masquerade to himself. The dancer/performer actually started sobbing while singing, and I cried along with him. It was so moving.
+Alyssa Schwarz I believe that Christine loved the Phantom but she wasn't brave enough to choose him and face his darkness. She chose Raoul because he represented stability and light.
+Alyssa Schwarz no i think that in the end she chose him because she realized that the phantom was not stable and was in many ways very twisted. i think the majority of her feelings were those of pity that were directed towards him
I’ve watched the phantom more times that I can count and all of shameless and it’s only recently I realised Emmy is in this and Gerald butler is the phantom!!!😂
@@ghjk40404 Patrick Wilson is my Favourite Raoul as well. The only Other Raoul's I genuinely like are Hadley Fraser, John Barrowman and (amusingly enough) Ramin Karimloo. I've never really been a fan of Steve Barton's performance as Raoul. His rendition always felt Foppish and condescending to me...
The chemistry between these two is off the charts. Even when the sang on The Today Show or Good Morning America (can't remember which), the ways they looked at one another were beautiful. I hope they do another musical together.
I love love LOVE Patrick Wilson's voice. I wish he'd sing more, or do more musicals, or release an album. His voice is beautiful, so gentle yet so masculine. This scene made me firmly Team Raoul.
Patrick Wilson doesn't have the strongest voice, but I find it very pleasant and to me he was the only Raoul I wholeheartedly rooted for. Great job in this movie.
This movie is my introduction to Patrick Wilson I was 16 years old when I saw this and I knew I fell in love with him that day. Still love him now. This movie is one of the most important movies of my life.
Part of the Phantom's charm is that who he really is, and his actions, are unpredictable. You can tell that Christine feels truly safe with Raoul and that he would never treat her wrongly. The Phantom loves Christine in the way he knows best, and it's very hard to treat people in a healthy way when you've been so mistreated your whole entire life.. he probably thought he treated her correctly.
Patrick's voice completely embodies Raoul's character in the musical. Raoul represents warmth and light. Hence, his voice is calming soothing and clear. Which directly contrasts the Phantom who represents mystery and darkness, hence the Phantom's voice is powerful and intense. I really love this rendition by Patrick and honestly one of the few times I feel truly rooting for Raoul and Christine..
I feel the phantom's pain on a deeper level than anyone who has never gone through an unrequited love can ever comprehend. It is absolutely painful to love someone that you would be willing to give the entire world to just to watch them fall into the arms of someone else.
My English teacher in High School introduced this movie to us for our Historic Play topic and has had me in a chokehold for a long time now. This was my comfort movie tbh and it keeps on letting me get back to watch and be reminded how complicated everyone in the movie was. Acting, emotion, delivery, performance, music, operatic score 1M/10
The movie got bad reviews but I think the box office and the fact you look here and how many people liked this speaks otherwise. I thought this was a great scene which captures the dichotomy of love committed and from another POV love demolished. It is such a bittersweet moment and very complex, something critics couldn't comprehend. The phantom is the background watching this so there is an undertone that comes out after they leave, the hatred and betrayal he feels. If that is good story writing and cinematography, then what is!
Our high school doing a production of this in February I was lucky enough to get the role of Raoul and this is my absolute favorite song that I get to sing!
Emmy and Pattrick did such a wonderful job capturing the essence of this beautiful scene. The gentleness and warmth in their voices as they serenaded each other complimented the beauty of the lyrics wonderfully. Not only that, but the way they looked at one another with such longing (both), vulnerability (Emmy) and conviction (Pattrick) added another layer of depth to this powerful rendition. I was thoroughly blessed with such an outstanding performance. This is my favourite version of this scene by far. This song reminds me of the passion and delight we find in the Song of Solomon, and, after reading the book over I came straight here to enjoy a similar love displayed so eloquently and purely. Bravo and God bless. ❤
Savannah Simonton When I first watched it I thought so too. but just recently at my fine arts school we actually did The phantom of the opera and actually being in it opens up ur eyes so much more, because though the phantom deserved love he was decieving her, pretending to be her fathers angle yet also falling in love with her. he wanted to keep her all to himself to a point where she would have no life, in a world full of darkness. and Raoul saved her from it. Its hard not to see the beauty in the phantom but there is a swirling cloud of darkness that also surrounds him. He felt like Christine brought the true angle he was out to the light. though I have to, admit her ending up with the phantom would have been a happily ever after beautiful ending. But thats why I love it so much, it reflects how life can really be and the true faces that love can have. and it connects to so many people
I have been Team Phantom, but I always very much liked Patrick Wilson as Raoul. 15 years later Patrick Wilson is still an immensely likable screen presence.
I will NEVER get over Patrick Wilson’s voice here… it’s angelic and softly powerful and full of so so much control and beauty. I could listen to him sing forever
It's because Emmy Rossum isn't that great of an operatic singer, but I personally prefer her voice for many of the songs compared to Sierra Bogess. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Sierra, but sometimes she doesn't know when to make her voice soft like Emmy does. She always goes over-the-top vocally, and I think Emmy's subtlety worked better, especially in this song.
As much as I love this movie, it's kind of exactly like James, Lily, and Snape. There is a big difference between love and obsession. James and Lily's patronus's were a stag/doe respectively. They were wonderful compliments to one another. Snape and Lily's patronus's were both doe's. The exact same. Obsession is not the same as love. Complimentary is different from need.
JItterRy PoKERy Nah fam it was definitely obsession. Snape had no concern for how she feels, only how he feels about her. He asked Voldemort to spare Lily but let him kill James and Harry, the people she loves most dearly. Also, he didn’t even bother trying to change for her, he went to practice the Dark Arts because she rejected him, which was because he called her a mudblood anyway.
@@erikaacosta6456 I mean... I wouldn't call it an obsession. Don't get me wrong, James was definitely the right choice, and I do see your point. But at the end of the day, Snape did overall respect Lily's wishes of not wanting anything to do with him, which is a far cry from what the phantom did and what obsession is. Snape's love for Lily was definitely a more selfish kind, but it wasn't an obsession.
They are the only ones that sing “Anywhere you go” together in the same note. Everyone else has Raoul’s part doing harmony, which doesn’t sound right. Only Patrick and Emmy do it perfectly.
Having heard Girard Butler sing and bring the Phantom of the Opera to life in the remarkable film version of Andrew Lloyd Weber's stunning music, it is still the most beautiful and touching performance of all the other performances by every other actor. Girard ButlerBrought his Phantom to life. Thank you so much for th.at film.
To anyone who is on Erik’s side, remember that he met Christine as a CHILD. He GROOMED her into thinking she loved him. There was never love. It was curiosity and fascination by Christine, and obsession on Erik’s part. I can’t believe there are people who believe deception, mental and emotional abuse and manipulation, murder, and kidnapping is romantic and considered love.
123bardox “Love Never Dies” was not written by Leroux, so it’s not canon to the original novel. It’s basically fanfiction... Besides, are we seriously going to believe that Christine would be in true love with a man that groomed her since childhood through manipulation, emotional abuse, and kidnapping? He was obsessed with her, not in love with her. He didn’t even know how to love himself, so he could not truly love someone else. That was the whole point of the novel - showing that a person like Raul is the right choice, who actually treats another with love and respect rather than control.
Phantom was also a serial killer it's not very nice really even putting aside his tortured soul bit. he didn't have much in the way of empathy for other people what with him killing them.
For a long time, I've been enchanted by the Phantom of the Opera, how dark, handsome, and mysterious he is. And to a small degree, I still am. In a fictional setting, it's downright sexy for a tall, dark, handsome stranger to seduce you with his powerful charisma. From the safety of our screens, we can be enchanted by this taboo. But in real life, it's a whole other ballgame. Real life Phantoms really are scary. They produce abusive relationships full of one-sidedness. I just came from watching Music of the Night, and it's an interesting contrast between that one and All I Ask of You. While Music of the Night is the Phantom asking Christine to give her whole life, identity, and willpower over to him, Raul in All I Ask of You is offering her peace, comfort, true love, protection, and joy, and asking her to give him the opportunity to give her all these wonderful things. And Christine wants that, too. With Raul and Christine, it's a mutual exchange of love. I especially love when Raul says, "I'm here," it's so touching and warming. :) I think the reason many people are romantically attracted to the Phantom is not just the tragic character, but also, going back to the taboo, what we may really want is not the one-sided nightmare of an abusive relationship, but maybe a partner who is good but knows how to be "bad", and by that I mean just in the seductive way who knows how to be dashing and alluring, not in the way that wants to dominate, control, imprison, and brainwash. The Phantom may have some degree of caring for Christine, but that is far overshadowed by his possessiveness and seeing her as more of a pretty little doll who can fulfill his darkest wishes. Raul sees her as a human being, whom he wants in his life to love him, but he also wants to love and take care of her. Don't go for the seductive request for one-sidedness, go for the warmth of a loving mutual exchange! :)
I was flipping through the tv channels when I saw this movie playing during this scene. I think it was only less than a year since it came out and I was only around 9 or 10 when I saw this scene. Needless to say I quit flipping the channels because this scene alone made me weep tears.
I'm convinced it was love but he went about it in the wrong way, trying to get rid of everything that got in the way of them. A little like Meg taking Gustave in Love Never Dies...
The Phantom's love song to Christine is "Music of the Night," but here, Raoul sings _"Let daylight dry your tears"_ and _"Let me be your light."_ Holy crap... Raoul is the Dayman to the Phantom's Nightman!
I love this song ❤ I watched this movie with my husband close to Christmas of 2023. He actually chose it for me. December is our 19th year anniversary. The lyrics resonate so much 💝 I love all seasons though and night or daytime together 😅
My fiancé and I will be singing a duet of this piece at our reception, I grew up with this movie and it has always been a dream come true for me. My wedding dress was also inspired by the dress Christine wore for “Think of me”. This will always be in a special place in my heart ❤️
The Phantom is the darkside of us. Wanting that other half to complete us, in order to feel whole and loved for our faults and mistakes. Raoul feels like the confidence of who we are and are willing to die for the ones we love. Your pick on who you wish to be. In my own personal experience I was once was the Phantom and I feel like today I am Raoul, and no matter the outcome of the relationship that I am today, I will feel like Raoul until I am old loving a tombstone with heartfelt memories and nostalgic feelings.
Not everyone is Raoul, many would be captain phoebus of the novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame by victor hugo that when it saw his life in danger if it continued behind Esmeralda abandoned it and left it to die because it believed that it was not very worthwhile and there were other women. A lot of them would leave Christine and let Erik and her do it all on their own.
Goes seing Wicked a week ago. It's good but I wasn't moved. You see GF been tryin to makes me like musicals for years and she didnt succeded. I respect her taste ofc. Then yesterday I've seen this movie. I think it's safe to say this materpiece moved me unlike any other musicals. Emmy Rossum and Andrew lloyd Weber is gaining a fan. Brava! Bravissima!
I think Hadley's Raoul is kinda meh because he makes Raoul sound arrogant and angry (which Imo isn't how Raoul should sound). Patrick fits the role better imo
Brenna Johnson I think they did intentionally because at the time of Phantom's 25th Anniversary, Love Never Dies was also running in the West End. And Raoul in LND was bitter and verging on abusive. If Hadley did a prince-like Raoul, LND Raoul would've never been comprehensible. :)
as seen in the “sequel”, settling with Raoul was not Christine’s best option. Webber turned Raoul into a drunkard and a gambler who it’s implied beat his wife and son.

@@Bettersucksaul yeah dating did not exist but true love did ...I'm not saying that the way Erik loved Christine was right ..for me it's just more pure because he loved her way longer but he just did not know how to treat people and love people in general because he never experienced something like that.

Kevin R. Duncil so true, for Eric Christine was something he was entitled to to because he helped her, while Raul truly wants to make her life better
Yes Nora, there are vast differences between love and obsession, or even neurosis brought on by years of abuse.
Nora Eisele It's funny because she's Swedish. 😂😂😂😂😂
Didn’t the phantom let Christine go she practically runs out with raoul with zero problems from the phantom.
Patrick Wilson was the perfect choice for Raoul. He has that very Prince Charming voice. So sweet, gentle and reassuring.
I don’t care what everyone else says about him, I love Raoul. He had such good intentions and just wanted Christine to be safe and comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE how complex Phantom is. But Raoul is just great. (Especially Patrick Wilson)
Patrick Wilson is great, but Hadley Fraser is the endgame.
Yay!
agreed! raoul was so kind and good to christine. although i feel so sad for the phantom, christine ultimately was safer with raoul.
I agree! Then my friend told me about the sequel and it completely ruins it for Raul😭 but in this one I would have chosen him too
RIGHT, people need to stop hating on him, he was scared about what the phantom could do to her and wanted to help her :)
Patrick Wilson and Emmy Rossum sing this song better than any other duo. I think Wilson in particular is underrated as a singer.
Emmy is underrated also
Holy shit I didn’t even realize that was Patrick until you said so! :0
I know its so soothing
How far Patrick Wilson has fallen these days. Now, he's just an actor starring in scare-jump horror bland movies and CGI superhero movie with paper thin emotional stakes.
When you are young and immature, you watch this and think, "Go away Raoul!...Christine and the Phantom belong together!"
Then when you grow up, you realize that Raoul really was the good guy and the right choice. The Phantom didn't love her, he was just controlling, abusive, and obsessed. He was always "punishing" her for not doing and being what he wanted.
Raoul was kind, giving, patient and forgiving.
whutzat 👏👏👏👏👏
Then LND happened

Very beautiful and true, thank you for your words
What a beautiful words! Thanks! ❤

Oh wow, you captured everything that goes through my head while listening to that song perfectly! Brilliantly said. Thanks a lot for these wise and kind words.
well said.
Patrick really needs to do more musicals. I love his voice.
The fact Emmy Rossum was 17 and having a vocal ability is incredible.

Used to prefer the phantom over Raoul when I was younger. But now I'd choose Raoul because his love is true.
Kyrios Same here. Almost every time I watched the film I sided with the Phantom. Watched it at the theatre on the weekend, sided with Raoul straight away.
You know I always sided with Raoul... When I was nine. Then I watched it like 4-6 Years later I sided with the phantom. LOL
I think after you've experienced real life relationships with "Phantoms" you realize all you want is something simple and true like the love of Raoul.
I believe the Phantom's love was only really true at the end when he let her go. He realized the error of his ways, and let her go on being truly happy the rest of her days.
This, of course doesn't take a way from how true Raoul is in his love.
Kyrios too bad she ended up with the phantom in the sequel
Patrick Wilson's voice cured my depression
Facts. It cured mine too. I still hear his voice singing to me in my head when I have my bad days.

Welcome.
Spot on
Is nobody gonna talk about just how beautiful and powerful the instruments in the background are?!?!
And I still love this in 2024 :)
It's my favorite part haha
phantom has some of the best orchestral scores, when it first debuted it had the largest orchestra in the west end. its my dream to be able to preform pit for this musical
Man, "Nobody" is a weird name. I assume that's your name, since you're talking about it.
Coolest thing about the movie adaptation is that they were able to use a complete orchestra while the broadway version couldn’t because of space. So the movie is how you are actually supposed to hear the music that Andrew Lloyd Webber composed. It’s amazing.
2024 here. Still love it
I never expected such a wonderful comment section with so much love for the healthy relationship out of the two in this story. I was so sick of hearing people defend Erik.
Patrick Wilson doesn’t get the attn he deserves. I’ve seen him in so many amazing roles👏🏼
Love Patrick Wilson. He has the voice of a Disney hero
Aaahhh! Everyone being so sad for the man who abuses, kidnaps, and murders when he doesn't get what he wants is exactly why so many people end up in abusive relationships and why it's so hard to get out.
Phoenix agrees with that statement and will die on that hill
you can pity someone but not agree with their actions.. hes a bad person but still had a tragic life. its no wonder that be abuses and murders when you look at his childhood. i dont think he should end up with christine, but its still sad.
He was a sociopath
no bro, the movie is made throught a lenz that makes us like the Phantom better than Raoul.
the Phantom has a story, he has our sympathy. Raoul has a few lines telling something about who he is. of course we would be sad for the phantom, we can't help it
a narrative strategy is not the reason people fall into bad relationships!! wth
Mic drop
Plus he is not just obsessed with her. He loves her.
He murders, stalks Christine, and kidnaps, and you want us to just ignore his "violent ways"???
Angela Hsiao Yes, because he really wouldn't do it if Christine just loved him. xD
She chose Raoul because he represented stability and light.
same.
+Alyssa Schwarz no i think that in the end she chose him because she realized that the phantom was not stable and was in many ways very twisted. i think the majority of her feelings were those of pity that were directed towards him
This is exactly how I felt
This song makes me realize how amazing Raoul is and makes me cry...so romantic
Gosh... so I'm not the only one that cried. ;) gosh its so romantic... I couldn't help it.
I watched 8 seasons of "Shameless" and had no idea she could sing like this. Amazing.
I’ve watched the phantom more times that I can count and all of shameless and it’s only recently I realised Emmy is in this and Gerald butler is the phantom!!!😂
Patrick Wilson is hands down the best Raoul.
Hadley fraser??
@@kaceydonnelly He's really good too!
Thank you 👏👏👏 He’s the best and most handsome Raoul. People hate on his hair. I think it looks straight out if a L’Oréal hair commercial.
Ha, I’m playing highway to hell on mine.
Played at my daughter funeral 😭😭😭 brings tears to my eyes each time I watch the film or at the theatre.
May you rest in peace 🙏
I’m so sorry for your loss.
I'm so sorry...may she rest in peace.
The older I get, the more I appreciate Raoul.
Our high school doing a production of this in February I was lucky enough to get the role of Raoul and this is my absolute favorite song that I get to sing!
Noah Ingold hey hope it was great!
Congrats on the role! =) ;)
“Say you love me.”
“You know I do..”
I FELT THAT 💕
And this is exactly why I have been a fan of Patrick Wilson since 😭
Emmy and Pattrick did such a wonderful job capturing the essence of this beautiful scene.
"All I want is freedom. A world with no more """night"""". Ouch
Right in the phantom's heart :'(
Knives to Eriks heart man. So. Sad.
in my opinion...she should've stayed with the phantom....
i think she could have let him go a little more gently and respectfully

I could listen to him sing forever
why does everyone hate on the film Christine so much? She has an amazing voice :)
I agree
They don't
It's because Emmy Rossum isn't that great of an operatic singer, but I personally prefer her voice for many of the songs compared to Sierra Bogess. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Sierra, but sometimes she doesn't know when to make her voice soft like Emmy does. She always goes over-the-top vocally, and I think Emmy's subtlety worked better, especially in this song.
+Nexol13 I agree with you
+Kailyn Wynn Well, thank you! :)
Snape loved lily. He literally gained the same patronus as her and his love for lily was one of the purest. It wasnt a obsession
JItterRy PoKERy Nah fam it was definitely obsession. Snape had no concern for how she feels, only how he feels about her. He asked Voldemort to spare Lily but let him kill James and Harry, the people she loves most dearly. Also, he didn’t even bother trying to change for her, he went to practice the Dark Arts because she rejected him, which was because he called her a mudblood anyway.
this is my favorite interpretation, i 100% agree with you
@@erikaacosta6456 Preach
@@erikaacosta6456 I mean... I wouldn't call it an obsession. Don't get me wrong, James was definitely the right choice, and I do see your point. But at the end of the day, Snape did overall respect Lily's wishes of not wanting anything to do with him, which is a far cry from what the phantom did and what obsession is. Snape's love for Lily was definitely a more selfish kind, but it wasn't an obsession.
Love the dichotomy of the love interests. Phantom is about lust domination and control, Raul is about love, acceptance, and partnership
There's no musical on earth that can touch phantom..So so sad it's gone ..
They are the only ones that sing “Anywhere you go” together in the same note. Everyone else has Raoul’s part doing harmony, which doesn’t sound right. Only Patrick and Emmy do it perfectly.
After watching so much ‘Shameless’ I often forget that Emmy’s capable of this, too! Such a talented actress!
That quick few seconds when Christine said "to hold me and to hide me" and we see the Phantom crying really breaks my heart.

I’m crying, one of the most beautiful love duets
To anyone who is on Erik’s side, remember that he met Christine as a CHILD. He GROOMED her into thinking she loved him. There was never love. It was curiosity and fascination by Christine, and obsession on Erik’s part. I can’t believe there are people who believe deception, mental and emotional abuse and manipulation, murder, and kidnapping is romantic and considered love.
Read up on *hybristophilia.*
musicaltheatergeek79 Wait, first I gotta listen to the song. Can’t click on this video without watching lmao
musicaltheatergeek79 Not trying to kink shame but ew
I think the reason many people are romantically attracted to the Phantom is not just the tragic character, but also, going back to the taboo, what we may really want is not the one-sided nightmare of an abusive relationship, but maybe a partner who is good but knows how to be "bad", and by that I mean just in the seductive way who knows how to be dashing and alluring, not in the way that wants to dominate, control, imprison, and brainwash. :)
Brilliantly said. Thanks for those wise and beautiful words!

For the love of Mike, it's just a movie. Take it easy
You hit the nail on the head.
I was flipping through the tv channels when I saw this movie playing during this scene. I think it was only less than a year since it came out and I was only around 9 or 10 when I saw this scene. Needless to say I quit flipping the channels because this scene alone made me weep tears.
I love the Phantom/Erik, but what he feels for Christine isn't love. It's obsession; it's twisted.
I'm convinced it was love but he went about it in the wrong way, trying to get rid of everything that got in the way of them. A little like Meg taking Gustave in Love Never Dies...
it's love because at the end, he gave her a rose on her grave
koolgirl1235 .. what does giving her a rose have to do with anything lol? yes, he still visits her grave but that doesn't mean he loved her. lmao
He fucked up her mind..... It's abuse...... He's like Killgrave with music.....
It's obsession AND love. Teenage girls (including myself) do it all the time.
This is a PERFECT audition song as a duet for two people providing the voices of a new Disney Prince and Princess respectively.
Is there anything Emmy Rossum cant do? More talent then all of Hollywood combined
His voice is so sweet sounding. It's so calming.
Cannot ever forget Christine's angelic voice. Get chills every time I listen to this masterpiece.
Patrick's multi-talented... he can act & sing too.. underrated celebrity..
The Phantom's love song to Christine is "Music of the Night," but here, Raoul sings _"Let daylight dry your tears"_ and _"Let me be your light."_
Holy crap... Raoul is the Dayman to the Phantom's Nightman!

can we talk about the fact that when they filmed this movie, emmy was 16, patrick was 30 and gerard was 34..........
Oh... oh... oh dear.
Kaitlyn McCormick she was 18... But anyhoo...still way too young to play Christine
Kaitlyn McCormick l
gorf64:I think they had Christine the same age as Her actress was but I could be wrong
I know! ......the career choices we all should have made! (sigh)
Raoul's hair brings me back to the first time I tried to use a curling wand
Oh god- this makes me cry every time I listen to it.
My wattpad heart still yearns to see Erik and Christine together..
My fiancé and I will be singing a duet of this piece at our reception, I grew up with this movie and it has always been a dream come true for me. My wedding dress was also inspired by the dress Christine wore for “Think of me”. This will always be in a special place in my heart ❤️
Song hits different when you think of the love you have for somebody, and how this encapsulates it perfectly
This mans voice is so comforting god bless
I loved the cast of the 2004 Phantom of the Opera, I know the entire movie word by word.
Brava! Bravissima!
Who else wishes you and ur partner had these voices and singing a cute duet w eachother like a movie
Valeria Del Rio-Rodriguez meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
*ME!* ;)
but then you realize you don't have a partner :p
Patrick Wilson's voice is perfect for this role. He and Hadley Fraser are tied as my favorite Raouls. =D
YES
Hadley Fraser sounds like an uncle, and Patrick sometimes sings out of tune. My fav Raoul is the one in Assie's Love Never Dies.
+Superfruit Grassi-Hoying Okay. =)
This is truly the best Phantom of the Opera ever
Whether you want to admit it or not, being with a "Phantom" is nice in theory, but we all end up settling down with a "Raoul" eventually.
Kay Lynn17 nah I’d choose phantom because he is better for me and Christine. I’m serious. She ended up with the phantom in the sequel.
honestly i'd choose the phantom just because i wanna live in a basement forever. im tired of responsibilities lolololol
as seen in the “sequel”, settling with Raoul was not Christine’s best option. Webber turned Raoul into a drunkard and a gambler who it’s implied beat his wife and son.
I'd only choose the Phantom because I love the night and darkness.
@@fulltimehater6250 you'd choose a murderer who lurks in the dark preparing nooses for people he don't like and lives in sewers and pretends to be ur dead father? Really romantic.
This is one my favourite songs of all the time 💖
But I was wondering that there might be cold 😂
+Kerttu Pänkäläinen 😂
Andrew Lloyd Webber is a songwriting genius.
I love this musical and movie. I memorized the lyrics to about all of the songs
Kerttu Ilona suomalaine army oh man holy shit!
no matter what you think about the movie, this is the best Raoul
Such a great moment. You feel so happy for them, but at the same time the phantom is being absolutely crushed and you feel for him.
So beautiful...so Romantic...and so Tender......
So *tremulous and tender,* you mean. ;)
Literally impossible to watch this without crying! One of the best love duets of all time! ❤
PEOPLE DO YOU UNDERSTAND THERE CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS AND THE PHANTOM IS THIS RANDOM DUDE WHO MURDERS PEOPLE JUST POPPED UP IN TO HER LIFE?!?!? OF COURSE SHE CHOOSE RAOUL
Yeah and Raoul casually comes back 10 years after and pretends to be sooo in love but honestly I don't think you really fall in love with someone when you both are still children ..so I never understood how Raoul could be soo in love when he did not even see her 10 fucking years
@@analovatic701 they had a bond and frankly raoul's love for her was pure and out of compassion for her, whereas erik's was manipulative and rash. she was afraid of him, that's not healthy. Also this was the 1800s so... dating didn't exactly exist
@@Bettersucksaul yeah dating did not exist but true love did ...I'm not saying that the way Erik loved Christine was right ..for me it's just more pure because he loved her way longer but he just did not know how to treat people and love people in general because he never experienced something like that.
GOD DAMNIT THANK YOU
Ikr lol
This the MOST beautiful proposal song 🥰
Christine: That's all I ask of you.
Also Christine: *proceeds to list a thousand requests*
😂😂😂
I love this scene, but then again... my heart goes with the Phantom too...
How can you root for Erik? He met Christine as a child and conditioned and groomed her into believing she loved him. It was pure curiosity and fascination, and obsession on Erik’s part. I mean, if you think deception, mental and emotional abuse and manipulation, murder and kidnapping are romantic, that’s all you.
Both of voices are natural. I love it so much!!
I'm a 50 years old man but I got goosebumps everytime I listen these song
