    I saw this film without having seen a single trailer for it. I'd never heard anything about it at all when I was bored one night and saw it and a blurb and thought, well, I've got nothing to do, this seems interesting. I was immediately captivated within the first five minutes and at the end I just sort of gaped and felt like laughing and crying and screaming all at the same time. I think I must have said something along the lines of "that was the best movie I've ever seen" and proceeded to immediately watch it again. And again. And watched it in theaters about 4 times. And again and again and AGAIN. I never get tired of it. It is my favorite movie of ALL time. Period.

    I think why the whole liar revealed thing works in this movie, and not usually in others is because the stakes are high, and he has an legitimate reason to keep the secret.
    It isn't just something trivial, it goes against everything they believe in

    • @teejaykaye
      @teejaykaye 6 років тому +38

      Oh, definitely. So often, Liar Revealed relies on some dumb misunderstanding that could've easily been avoided if people had just been better at communicating, or bothered communicating at all. So rarely does the trope ever actually have real, dangerous, heavy stakes behind why the characters react the way they do to secrets like that.

    • @tcrpgfan
      @tcrpgfan 6 років тому +33

      Another thing... the 'liar' actually does try to reveal his discovery. Thus going against most liar revealed stories. He just botches it. Another thing i really, REALLY like, is that the biggest problem that both Stoick and Hiccup face in their relationship comes from miscommunication, that they make it extra clear that Stoick loves his son and does want to have a working relationship with Hiccup, but neither really knows how to go about it.

      It's not like a Bug's Life where they make some stupid argument that that doesn't make sense. It doesn't matter that they aren't warrior bugs, the bird plan works fine without their help, "but he lied to us and that's bad, so that's a reason to banish him" I'm getting annoyed just by thinking about it

    • @mackielunkey2205
      @mackielunkey2205 Рік тому +2

      I also love that when the reveal happens, Hiccup stands his ground and continues to defend Toothless. He’s like, “yeah I take total responsibility, just don’t hurt Toothless.” And I find it refreshing.

    • @thefirstbourne149
      @thefirstbourne149 Рік тому +1

      @@teejaykaye Hell, sometimes the annoying version works if the whole theme is just lack of communication as it is really stressed that that is what's happening. It's an exploration.

    2:40 It's amazing how just that ONE moment can make a moment where the father says "I have no son" not work against him. Just that one moment of pain before he steels himself goes a long way to humanizing him.

    I'll try to explain why the dragons are stuck feeding the giant dragon:
    They are not forced to feed it as yes, they can just fly away. They are CONTAINING it. If that think just roamed free, imagine the destruction it would cause. By keeping it on one place the dragons are saving themselves because instead of hunting dragons, the giant dragon is content to just sit back and relax while the dragon colony feeds it. This spares HUNDREDS of dragons from death on a daily basis.

      ***** Its a happy coincidence...

    • @Bitsy83

      So, what you're saying is the dragons are trying to keep balance in this world? They know that if this dragon hunted for it's own food, everything would not only be eaten or destroyed, but the surviving dragons would likely starve and quickly die out since their natural habitat is no longer livable. Like how the natural order was thrown off kilter in "Lion King" when Scar let the hyenas take over the Pridelands, not only effecting the lions' hunting grounds, but the hyenas as well. The same principle works here since the giant dragon would have the same effect on Berk and the other islands, only to a greater extent.
      If this is what you're trying to say, it's a damn good theory. It shows just how intelligent these dragons are. Sure, they've been inadvertently helping the humans, but only because Berk has a large supply of fish and sheep to keep not only themselves fed, but the giant as well.

    i rewatched this today and i realized something regarding why the little dragons don't just fly away. The whole reason toothless takes them to the nest is because he hears a noise, and once he hears it he starts flying to the island and nothing hiccup does will change his mind. So basically, it was mind control.

    I took a Character Design class a few years ago in College, and Toothless, as well as the Eagle from Rescuers Down Under were major inspirations for the secondary character I designed in that class, a Griffon. I made it look realistically like a Griffon would, and gave it distinguishing features to claim it as my own and not just rehash from famous interpretations in artwork. And, as such, it was very well received in my class. I regret to say I did that before I made the transition to digital art, so the characters portrayed in fine art didn't look nearly as good as they could have, but I'd definitely look to give a spin on it again in the future, and maybe even adapt it into a silent short film like Disney does best. Especially if I can pull off flying scenes as well as they do here and in RDU.

      ikr? The scores in this movie were so THRILLING! I specialy loved the bagpipes in the flight soundtrack, it just added up that epic feel, despite this movie being more norse than celtic, bagpipes are always a plus for medieval epic movies IMO. This movie had the perfect combination of the 3 points of a movie: animation, story and sound.

      Nicholas Bloom For some reason I didn't like it as much as the first. I kind of feel that the pacing was off or something. Everything just moved a bit to quickly and there were some weird niches of the story like Hiccup's obsession with peacefully ending the conflict while the villain was currently trying to kill him and all of his family.

    • @joesatmoes
      @joesatmoes 9 років тому +3

      +Hiker Wolfspaine I agree, for the most part. I agree that it moved too fast- and as Doug said, the pacing was what made the first movie so good. However, I think in the first movie it was made clear that Hiccup doesn't want conflict between anyone- that's what made his relationship with Toothless possible. He wants peace between everyone.

When the pupils of the dragons eyes tighten, and (if they have them) their ears start to vibrate ,acting as antennas, that means that the queen has control over them.

    I had a huge prejudice for this movie because I simply just thought it was for children and would turn out to be a mediocre film...2 years later, I was bored and decided to watch this film. It blew my mind. It was so great and I kinda think 80% of it is perfect. The other 20% are not, but they are still great.
    4.5 stars from me.

      What 20 % did you not like?

    • @magnusbjarnisk
      @magnusbjarnisk 10 років тому +1

      4.5 out of 5. .5 is 10%, so I did not like 10% of the film.
      The reason is Jay Baruchel. I never got the feeling like this was another world when he was talking...But when Gerard Butler was talking, I really felt like he wasn't there...Like he had become the viking. I felt like Jay wasn't trying to be Hiccup.
      If Hiccup had been voiced by someone else, someone less famous, then it could have been amazing (since he didn't change his voice one bit), but almost everytime he talked I got thrown out of this imaginary world and had to get back in it again...At least Gerard Butler became his character. I didn't even realize it was him until the movie was over.

    • @thefirstbourne149

      magnusbjarnisk Well they do make Hiccup a great character. Plus, I think his voice does fit within his character really well. Actually, in the sequels it’s almost confusing to me when he didn’t use the nasally voice at times and I mean that in the best way.

    • @ladyvenusdragon
      @ladyvenusdragon 9 років тому +8

      +Lena Storm It's always nice to hear that even if the movie adaptation of the book is different it's still good. Not a lot of book-turned films get that kind of reaction. Like Peter Jackson doing the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit for example got a lot of people saying they didn't like the movies (mostly the Hobbit) because of how different it was from the book. Adaptations are meant to be different from their original source but that doesn't make them bad films. I have not read the book for this movie but I just might have to in order to compare the two and still appreciate both the book and the films.

    Debate the books and movies all you want, I like both of them. After reading the books, I'm perfectly satisfied with some of the changes they did. Sure we did lose some stuff like Fishlegs as a main role and Camicazi (Though they do develop Fishlegs in the show more), but the changes in this movie worked for me. I honestly think it would be a bad idea to have Toothless in the movies be EXACTLY like Toothless was in the books. He was like one of those annoying Disney comic reliefs, and if it did happen that way people would say the movie's ripping off Mulan. Sure if you're one of those people who can't stand changes in movies then you're going to despise it, but I think both do a great job of telling a good story with good characters.

      I actually picked up the book of it today and before hand I had NEVER seen anything about ti except movie and tv. Well I can say I skimmed did not hold my interest as much I do agree that if they left if the same it may have been a massive flop because a.) It'd alienate most who didn't know b.) it would remind you of a boy and his pet shiatsu. Not to mention in an extra they did sorta talk about how Toothless in the movies is sorta like a 2nd form of Toothless in the books or something like that. But having him after a cat and a new character (to the new and old fans) opened up a whole new avenue. Either way i love it the books not so much, but that's a personal thing.

    I love how this film designed the dragons.
    Normally, dragons in movies have the usual pointed head, horns giant wings and four legs. It's a very over-used and stereotypical design.
    Here, though, all of these dragons come in different shapes and sizes! Some are big and slow while others have crazy, long necks, two heads, or really slender and beautiful bodies with big, intelligent eyes (I think we all know what dragon I'm on about here xD).
    The design of the dragons is one of the highest merits of this film for me, along with the very well-executed story.

The "steal/attack humans to feed the queen so it doesn't eat us" thing doesn't really help them either. When you're faced with a monsterous dragon like the Red Death and its growing 'army' and an entire species out for your blood, you'll go for the thing that will at least give you and your young a chance at living for another day

    One of my favorite parts in the movie is the scene where Stoick is trying to determine if Hiccup is alive or not. It took me a while to notice it, but when Stoick puts his ear to Hiccup's chest, you can hear a, 'bum-bum,' kinda like a heart beat. Dreamworks definitely nailed that scene.

    *I believe the reason the dragons can't just leave the dragon and fly away is because it's 1. The dragons acknowledge that the alpha dragon is a threat and hence keep it in the hive and 2. If you notice, toothless and all of the other dragons are almost drawn to it against their wills. Once they get close enough to the Alpha they start to become mind controlled (revealed in the 2nd movie) and rtte. If a dragon is considered stronger and superior, then it immediately gains full respect from fellow dragons. Toothless got the same treatment when he stopped the monstrous nightmare. The Nightmare ultimately caved and flew away when Toothless challenged him.

    Agreed. How To Train Your Dragon THRIVES on those little interactions between characters. Those moments help give the film a realism, depth and humanity that most animated films (or hell, most films period) can only dream of having. Like Doug said, it's AMAZING how well this film works, because by all means and by every stretch of logic, it really shouldn't. And yet it DOES work, and it works in a way that feels fresh, new and exciting.

      Well, the book series is a different story with different themes, so I wouldn't work the themes there into the movie series.
      But the first two are not conflicting statements. Dragons aren't inherently evil, but like any creature, when raised in an abusive environment, they tend to reflect that. Kids raised in physically abusive homes have a tendency towards excessive anger issues and lashing out violently. Nobody's evil, but a lot of the time, when someone's hurt and they don't know how to heal, they hurt in retaliation. Because it's the only thing they know.

      @@wd3185 Yes, but the
      final film oddly tried to make it
      so dragons were wholly
      innocent incapable of any
      wrong in the wild unless

      The shows constantly
      contradicts that by showing

    I think the reason that the big dragon (the red death) is able to force the other dragons to do as it wants is maybe because it’s like the bewilderbeast in the second movie. It’s an alpha and therefore has some kind of control over them. I don’t know, there are reasons why this couldn’t work either, but it’s still a strong possibility in my opinion

  • @333Rich33
    @333Rich33 9 років тому +3

    My favorite Animated movies list :3
    1) How to Train Your Dragon (I JUST re-watched this movie and critic reminded me why I LOVE this movie :D )
    2/3/4/5) Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Wall-E, Toy Story Series (Cheatin' a bit here)
    I will not have How to Train Your Dragon 2 on this list because I feel that the movie is an inadequate sequel to something as grand as HTTYD. I REALLY want to like the movie, but it gave me almost nothing to absolutely love (the mother's and Erit or Erin's roles were nice).
    I also feel that the movie is overrated in this sense. Astrid's whole character wasn't as harsh as it was in the first movie, but more laid back. Also, she sounded weird, like the studio did a last-minute mediocre re-recording for Astrid's role. Also, the new voice actor (Ferera American or something) didn't capture Astrid barely, if at all.
    At first I didn't like how Drago Bloodvist didn't change in the first viewing, but after watching HHTYD2 a second time, I realize he's pretty damn evil, so this point is completely pointless. (oops)
    The Ice doesn't even LOOK like ice, it looked like some weird crystal (probably should've let Elsa show them how ice looks).
    The romance that the movie tried with the secondary characters was NOT funny, did nothing for the story, was very awkward, made for some VERY uncomfortable scenes, ultimately chipping away at the movie experience.
    Another problem was that it showed absolutely NOTHING about how all the cool stuff came to be. Five years later "OH, now we have, blah blah blah, DRAGON RACING!!1KL U;! #%G ^2}+@1Z)""I[Hiccup] now have a badass suit I built, flame sword, and now scour for new lands!!!" Like what Nostalgia Critic said :
    "The pacing is just so good, in that, every time something happens, *you see how it affects the character*, you see when the boy learns something that *it will sink in* you see actually *taking the time to figure stuff out* with the dragon"
    I don't get that at ALL with HTTYD2
    The movie reminds me of Rio (not Rio 2...that was ALSO a shitty sequel) with all the different types of flying creatures and their colors filling up the screen.
    Small nitpick: There's a dragon book in the first movie, it shows of a WHOLE bunch of different and interesting dragons...they are amazing, one spits boiling water, and another spits acid...even when it HATCHES. These dragons sound amazing (Doesn't the name "Whispering Death" sound pretty fucking cool?), but Dreamworks LOST their chance. I am now afraid how they'll handle "Kung Fu Panda 3"
    Sorry if this is long, but it REALLY explains most of the problems with HTTYD2. Know any more problems? Tell me, I'd like to know other problems that I missed.

      +Rich - 10 hours (CANCELED)
      I'm here to give a rebuttal to your arguments.
      America Ferrera voiced Astrid in both movies. They did not change her actress.
      And I didn't like Astrid's character in the first movie. Too abrasive for no good reason.
      About your criticisms on how the ice looks... really?
      I've heard people on Tumblr praise how that ice looks more realistic than Frozen's.
      And even if it does look a bit like crystals, that's because it's not naturally made ice.
      It's ice made from a dragon.
      The secondary character romance... well, I can see where you're coming from.
      But I saw lessons appear for Ruff, Snot and Fish.
      Ruff shouldn't fall in love with a guy just for how he looks.
      Snotlout and Fishlegs shouldn't rush into romance. They don't truly understand romantic love yet.
      Plus it was in the spirit of the books' style of humour, so bonus points for that.
      Dragon Racing? You seriously want the focus of the story to shed light on that?
      There are more serious things to worry about, like taking up responsibilities and fighting another war, and you're interested in dragon racing?
      They did not need to show you how it came to be. It was an adrenaline rush to start the movie with a bang.
      Plus I've got several similar flaws with the first movie, but we'll get to that later.
      Also, regarding how cool Hiccup has gotten... Can't you just accept that? You seriously just want him to keep the same flimsy outfit from the first movie?
      I sure don't!
      Besides, it's been shown that he adapts and changes to new situations, so don't expect him to look the same a few years down the line.
      Besides, his armour and sword are what we call "practical".
      Plus, he always has been an adventurous type of person.
      I just hate it when people call his docile nature "non-adventurous". They don't mean the same things!
      Pacing problems... please state some.
      I found none.
      About the amazing species of dragons and how they weren't showcased...
      HTTYD 2 is more character-driven than HTTYD 1. There is no need to focus on cool dragons and their abilities if they aren't symbolic or essential to the characters and their story.
      That was one of the things that made HTTYD 2 better to me.
      Sorry if Kung Fu Panda 3 is more character-driven than exploration-driven. But the best stories are the ones about character.
      *Now here comes my problems with HTTYD 1...*
      They are not consistent with how horrible Hiccup's life is made to be by the Berkians. They're apparently horrible to the point where he is willing to run away, yet at the end it seems to be not the case, because he saves them all, no matter how undeserving some are.
      *The books did that better because they pulled no punches on how horribly the Berkians treated Hiccup.* He is mocked, scorned and beaten everyday, *yet he chooses to do the right thing because he feels it is his duty.* That is amazing character. but we don't get that side of him in the film.
      *HTTYD 1 is just vague on how abusive the Berkians are of Hiccup just so that most of us can root for them in the climax. I say most because there is a minority (myself included) that did not like them and hoped they would be killed by the Red Death.*
      *And before you say that that minority are psychopaths, the fact is that if a story can't make you care for the "good" guys, then it is not that good of a story.*
      *Astrid and Hiccup's romance are just rushed in HTTYD 1!*
      For weeks she's just been ignoring him, then that grows to hating him, then 1 effing dragon ride later - she's in love with him!
      *Too easy romance. Too easy.*
      *Another flaw with HTTYD 1 is convenience with the plot.* Things happen to get better (or worse) because, hey, the story needs to progress.
      Hiccup is abused by almost everyone... yet he saves everyone.
      Stoick disowns Hiccup. That is never brought up again.
      Hiccup and Astrid's romance blossom - so that the film has love in it!
      3 Jerks - Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut - have gotten rid of their jerk status at the end of the movie - so that the ending is completely happy!
      The dragons are revealed to have been controlled by a damn bigger dragon - so that we can avoid having a deep, verbal debate on how the Vikings are just being total pricks to nature and those who are different from them!
      I mean really! One of the major things that the books cover is how uncivilized and cruel the Vikings are, how that is detrimental in the long run, and how they are slow to change because they are foolishly stubborn.
      *In the film, they are half-heartedly bowdlerized to appear half-decent, so that people can root for them.*
      What a cop-out!
      HTTYD 1 isn't that good as people make it out to be if it can't make the personalities of the majority of characters win you over.
      Also, about the Red Death...
      *They just put that in the film as an easy fix!*
      As I said before, instead of the film having a deep, meaningful argument between Hiccup and the Vikings on how dragons aren't bad, we instead have an epic (not) battle!
      And by the way, when Hiccup kills that dragon, he goes against the film's lesson that dragons are not bad.
      Also, HTTYD 1 just *glosses over Stoick's failures as a parent!*
      I hate it when people say that "ooh, Valka, you're a horrible mother" when the fact is that Stoick neglected his son for years, was ashamed of him for his interests, and just f*cking disowned his son when Hiccup had living proof that dragons are not bad!
      *Hiccup lost a leg because of Stoick's failures, and HTTYD 1 just f*cking forgets that!*
      *So yeah, this is the end of my rant of about how I feel that HTTYD 2 is better than HTTYD 1.*

    I have to say I'm pretty sure I understand why the dragons continually returned to the nest when they could have flown away: Their families. If you look closely you can see the eggs, and sure they could have flown off when the hatchlings, well, hatched, but it's like living somewhere your whole life, all you know is that place. Then suddenly you realize just how big and scary the world really is and you find you're drawn back to the one constant thing: home.

Surprisingly in my opinion the thing that borrowed most from the books would be the short film "The Boneknapper" - it used plot points from books 4 and 5 and parodied the way Alvin kept coming back after apparently dying.

      but even the autor praised the movie and said she actually liked the changes and that they made sense for a movie to make but that the point of the story and the feeling remained the same as in the books. So if the author accepts the movie why can't fans do the same?

      89taklung the creator of star wars loved Jar-jar Binks but the fans hate him. and for everything in life someone out there will hate it, i just so happens i i'm one of the few people who hate this movie. p.s. i think you meant to say author instead autor.

    Me and my mates saw this at our uni's movie night. It completely blew my mind and it's not my usual cup of tea. Even funnier was when we sped up the movie and listened to the end credits song. Hysterical!

    I love this film, I just got done watching it for the first time. It's exciting, fascinating, dreamlike, adventurous, and charming. Chris Sanders and Dean Deblois (who also wrote and directed Lilo and Stitch) pulled off this film brilliantly.

    Of all the CG movies down by Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks this has to be my favorite of the medium. The story, characters, setting, pacing, God that wonderful music, and bow-down-before-the-epic-awesomeness of the visuals. I didn't get to see it in IMAX but you can bet when they do re-release it, I'll be one of the first in line for a ticket.

    I totally agree with you, although, I am sorry that Critic didn't mention the most powerful element of the movie: the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless. The friendship was just AMAZING. The way it developed, those scenes without dialogs... 'Lilo and Stich' for example, it didn't had that so well-expressed. This movie was extraordinary, I love it so, so much.

    I agree about how the dragons working was kind of confusing. That's why I'm glad they explained it in the second one,lol.

    I guess this is a lesson to writers/filmmakers like myself, "Write and tell a story, people know a million times, but make them feel like they're hearing it for the first time!"

    I mostly love how they kept a similar aspect for Hiccup-he chooses to use his head, not instantly resort to violence. it is a rare trait for Vikings, apparently.

    I saw the TV ads back in 2009/2010 thinking it would be a ridiculous boring movie I would forget if I watched. I didn’t realize that on late March of 2010, my life changed forever because of this movie.

    What i got from the "they have to feed the big dragon" was this: where the big dragon was was where the dragons lay their eggs, which if you look at it, it looks like a volcano or somewhere really hot so it makes since they have to lay their eggs in that one spot because the rest of the country is all snow, as hiccup says in the beginning i believe (or at least is factually true), so they have to feed the monster dragon to keep their eggs safe. That's just what I thought.

    I have to thank this movie for for making me have faith that an animated movie could still be good. I remember watching this movie for the first time. I had gone to the Rogers On Demand channel and saw that this movie was free. I remember thinking it was gonna be stupid. My GF asked me to watch it, and may I say. I am glad that I did. I thought it was completely refreshing. It did the underdog story with a great twist (being that they were both underdogs), and the unmatchable BFF relationship of Hiccup and Toothless. This movie was..... awesome.

    Oh my gosh...This vid...is exactly my feelings ^^
    Cheesy plot, awesome setting, character, animation.
    The actions just blew your mind, and it's totally not not rushed at all.
    And most of all, the character feels raw and real.
