    The thing about the villain (I keep forgetting his name) not being all that threatening nor all that funny, but an in-between, works really well for his character! He isn't "evil", he was filled with (Shifu's) hopes and dreams to the point all he ever did was train to become the Dragon Warrior. When he wasn't chosen, and saw all his life was meaningless up to that point, he simply broke down. He isn't an evil bastard, he's a lost soul! He isn't entirely threatening because he was raised by a loving father. He isn't entirely funny because he does have hatred in his heart and the will for vengeance! But since he isn't any extreme, that gives him traits we can relate to much more!
    He makes jokes, he laughs, he taunts the Furious Five, he wipes the ground with them, and his confrontation with Po isn't Good VS Evil, but rather the two facing their own struggles in order to become the Dragon Warrior! Ultimately, Ty Lung (finally remember his name!) fails to understand what the scroll means and loses to his rage, whereas Po stands victorious for having someone who could open his eyes! Heck, Po was filled with sorrow from the moment he got the scroll and didn't get its meaning either, and he was on the verge of leaving the Valley of Peace for good!
    While Ty Lung is the evil guy because this is what the creators intended him to be, a force to be overcome by "justice", his arrogance, skills, rage, laughs, they are all part of who he was before he turned "evil". We can understand why Shifu would refuse to fight him, because a lot of the kid he raised was still inside him!

      +TwilightWolf032 Shen in the second movie was truly evil though.

    • @TwilightWolf032
      @TwilightWolf032 8 років тому +60

      Demon Rantz Indeed. He wiped out entire villages of Pandas so no "power of black and white" could stand on his way.
      But Shen isn't just evil for the sake of being evil. He falls on the category of not believing his deeds are evil! He believes what he is doing is the right thing to do! He is the crown heir to the throne, he creates a weapon and a prophecy foretells he will be defeated by a panda, which leads him to wipe out all living pandas he can find! But he did it because he thought HE was the victim - after he killed those pandas, he came back home thinking his parents would be proud of him!
      Shen is truly a horrible villain, but he believes what he is doing is right! He isn't evil for the sake of being evil either. He just can't understand what he is doing is a bad thing - so much that, by the end, Po still tries to teach him what keeps him strong, to which Shen replies with one last attack (that ultimately culminates in his own death).
      Shen is a character that does not comprehend sympathy! For him, all that matters is the position of power he possesses.

      +TwilightWolf032 Not only that, but Tai Lung is perfect for the moral of the story. The moral is "There is no secret ingredient, there is just you." Tai Lung is consumed by him feeling incomplete and that the Dragon Scroll will give him the power he has been raised to crave. Po realized what the scroll meant, but Tai Lung when seeing what was in the scroll felt as though all of his ambition was useless and that he did so much for a reflection.
      The main goal of the movie is to show that there is nothing that makes you special but believing in yourself. Tai Lung doesn't believe in himself, he believes in the scroll and because of this and Shifu raising him to do nothing if not to obtain it. It's to show that even if you aren't as skilled, if you believe in yourself truly that you will conquer anything.

    I absolutely adore this movie. As a person who loves Asian philosophy, meditation and the deeper messages behind martial arts, this movie does an amazing job exploring those philosophies and explaining them in a simple way that children could easily understand. It's incredibly inspiring, heartfelt, deep, funny and whimsical; I can't wait for the day I get to show it to my own children.

    I think what really helps this movie is that it isn't any of the things you might expect it to be. Po doesn't pretend to be something he isn't, he doesn't win through dumb luck, and he doesn't just instantly become a great warrior. He just trains hard, accepts who and what he is, and saves the day.

    One thing I find odd that nobody ever comments on is Jackie Chan's casting. I mean here we have one of the most famous Asian actors as well as one of the most famous living movie-martial-artists, and one of the most recognisable voices among Asian actors, and... he gets the part of the Furious Five member who talks the least, and is pretty much just a secondary character. I dunno, maybe it's because his accent is kinda thick, but I think if Mako could become a world-renowned VA with an accent as thick as his, why not Chan?

    • @gent777
      @gent777 9 років тому +11

      maybe it's because Mako has done so many memorable voice acting that we can recognize him from his voice, but with Chan, we know him as an awesome stunt man in live films, so it's not a lot of people will recognize him on voice alone, considering Chan's accent is almost as thick as any Chinese person's accent.

    • @bandotaku
      @bandotaku 9 років тому +12

      Michael Welsh Well, which role do you think he would have been better suited for? Frankly, the fact that he is in the movie at all, is awesome. The Monkey style kind of fits with the martial arts that Chan is famous for, so I think it was a good choice. It's kind of like a Stan Lee cameo, but with more screen time and lines.

    I never saw it until TODAY. Boy was I pleasantly surprised by this movie, and yeah just hearing the title, "Kung Fu Panda", it sounds ridiculous, but much like the subsequent, How To Train Your Dragon, the execution is wonderful. I loved it, it was funny, well animated, fast-paced, energetic, cool, and the story was very well told. The choreography is really great, and seeing Po so eager to learn is so endearing you can't help but root for him. Even the villain, Tai Lung, he was great, and the backstory that explained the connection between him and Shifu was well written. I'm glad I finally saw it because it really is a great film, can't wait to watch the sequels.

      ***** That actually was my main problem with the show. In the movies Po could be a little annoying but that was overshadowed by his humility and positivism that made you root for him. In the show he could be REALLY irritating and stupid for the sake of plot. Not all of it was bad, but I hope the movies aren't going to use anything based off the show.

  • @twentyzero4

    my main problem was that the villain just felt way too...justified in his actions? He was told he was the greatest, was given visions and promises of what was to be his future, and then discarded like an unwanted toy when something else comes along? What else is he supposed to do with his life? he was born and trained to be a warrior, to fight. He doesn't know anything else.

    • @Optimusprime240
      @Optimusprime240 10 років тому +51

      I don't see that as a problem at ALL!! I thought that was AMAZING creativity. He isn't a villain in the normal sense, some clichéd evil guy bent on destruction just because. NO, he is someone who was created through no fault of his own, and now knows nothing else but destruction thanks to someone else's mistake. That makes for a great character, someone you can actually relate entirely to and even feel sorry for. I shed real tears when he took on Shifu in that battle of both strength... AND emotion. They are fighting their pasts, and that makes for a great story.

    • @Banchoking
      @Banchoking 10 років тому +44

      And Shifu admits that it was all his fault, but Tai Lung had long since stopped caring about that, he just wants what he thinks is his and will kill anyone in his way. Tai Lung got the raw end of the deal, but he made a choice to take his anger out on others.

    • @Optimusprime240
      @Optimusprime240 10 років тому +30

      Banchoking
      Hence the villain in him. And that is pretty darned realistic for a character. 20 years in prison, with that grudge festering and boiling inside him. Then he gets a chance to repay Shifu for all that, so he's gonna take it no matter what.
      Yet, he is STILL affected by Shifu's apology, if only for a few seconds. But it is there, and that makes Tai-Lung such a great villain. Not nearly as great as Shen, but still great.

    • @twentyzero4
      @twentyzero4 10 років тому

      Optimusprime240 which is exactly, my problem with him. He was created through no fault if his own, has no say in what he becomes, and now he's punished for it? why is it his job to suffer for the mistakes that the other characters made? what sort of lesson is that trying to teach? decisions will be made for you in life and you will have to bear the consequences, while those who made your choices for you get off scott free, wait no, rewarded, for punishing you for your actions that were no fault of your own.

    This movie is AWESOME. It has an all-star cast (Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane, Jackie Chan), it's funny as hell, and it kicks ass with martial arts epicness that's comparable to Batman's combat badassery.

    omg I can't belief so many people need to point out that he said fearsome instead of furious.I'm scrolling thru the comments to see if anyone says or knows why only the audio is available on awesome channel and seriously every other comment is pointing out this mistake. I'm sure they all speak flawlessly all day all the time geeeeeeez. This isn't even his account so I doubt he'll even ever see it. You guys are furiously fearsome. Love these reviews, am watching thru all disneycember and dreamworksuary. Definitely a great way to learn about and get into 2 great studios.

    i think that this film is SO powerful - when the villain opens the scroll and shouts 'its nothing!' just really gives me chills on how symbolic and actually deep this film is. dreamworks is so good at giving us great comedy and characters but it also gets across the morals in a very subtle but powerful way. i'd love to work for them one day

    I thought this movie was going to be one of the dumbest movies ever. Then the sequel came out and I thought that would top it. I absolutely refused to see either one of them. Until I moved in with my sister, niece and nephew who loved both movies forcing me to watch it with them. And I loved them! I'm super excited for Kung Fu Panda 3 (it's finally here!) and will be accompanied by my niece and nephew who introduced me to these "dumb" movies

    I saw this a while ago and started viewing the show as a result, even tho the graphics were degraded just a tag (good looks pretty awesome) it's a awesome show and this can't do enough justice you need to watch it just to see how awesome it was.
    I gotta wonder, how many episodes in the show are we gonna get before or after film 3 if we ever get it?

    Really the only thing I didn't like about this movie is they got all these kind of big actors for the characters, and they hardly had any impact. Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, and Jack Black are good. The guy voicing the villain is good. But the others just seemed unnecessary. Why drag David Cross and Lucy Liu here for only a few lines? Heck, they completely wasted Jackie Chan, I think he had like 2 lines in the entire movie, and I couldn't even hear them.
    I don't usually mind celebrity voices, but they just felt so wasted here.
