- The Chronicles of Creation of the Movie.
This film about creation is a unique and valuable footage.
You will see how Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois created How to Train Your Dragon from the beginning. Very, very interesting film for any HtTYD fan. In the film you even can see John Powell playing song "Where's Hiccup?".

So weird seeing them making this.. I’ve always pictured filmmaking as something very strict, but Dean and Chris had those fun brainstorm-sessions casually around the table, while joking around at the office. Such a freespirited and down-to-earth production, resulting in a masterpiece
It's amazing how two guys can just start with an idea...
They did the same for Lilo and Stitch though
Httyd wasn’t there idea it was already a book
@@Daniel_parrott28654yes but the book is different from the film, they just took the concept, they changed quite a bit.
"Is that a vacuum cleaner? On their balcony? That's so weird!" Favorite line.
I'm not all the way thorough but he's just so tired and all the sudden says that I'm like "Uh guys, he needs some sleep, bad." But seriously, "Is that a vacume cleaner...on there balcony? That's sooo weird" I laughed so hard! Idk if that's my favorite, but it might end up being my fav part LOL
And I love how he's lost in thought and the door bell makes him jump a few inches.
"That familiar feeling of 'wow, you've done so much' to 'wow, we've done nothing at all!' " is such a familiar feeling...
Yet I don't know any movie with such a great music! That's the best movie music I've ever heard
so awesome to hear others enjoy the music as much as I do. This is probably one of my favorite movies of all time and the test drive scene is probably my absolute favorite moment in any movie ever made. the combo of the music where hiccup and toothless fly under that stone arch and toothless wing skims the surface, pure cinematic poetry. I wish I could get into this industry.
Your so right BEST MUSIC!
Same
I like it as well but what about Star Wars or idiana jones
Every time i hear it i get goosebumps
Watched this film for the first time a few days ago....it is utter perfection.
I am completely blown away and obsessed with this film, i cant even put into words how it makes me feel and the music never fails to move me to tears.....just perfect....
Have you watched the sequel? Itss soo much better....
Heaverewe95 I totally understand dreamworks has given me a dream and watching it makes me want to literally touch the sky. also im super inspired by the song in the test drive scene.
I had the same reaction when i watched the movie the first time last year. Somehow i missed the second on the theather, and watched it last week. That obsession came back and I'm watching the tv series now. The incredible part is how related i felt to hiccup, he's awkardness and cutness made him my favorite character of all time. Felt like I was 5 again.
+Heaverewe95 ditto
+Heaverewe95
oh my Thor!!!! I feel EXACTLY the same!!!!!!!!!!!
23:22 Chris suddenly goes off topic
"Is that a vacuum cleaner... On our balcony..? That's weird...."
laughed so hard, worst part is, it's like 3 am so hope I didn't wake anyone, oops.
I LOVE THAT THEY FOCUS ON THE RELATIONSHIP STORY!
The movie has cool lore, funny lines, a really tight plot, but it’s the HEART that makes it GREAT.
I've never seen a documentary on producing a movie before. I'm so glad I was able to see this. IT was epic enough just to have been able to see them have fun and voice act and just draft so many different ideas and have so many that they could just put together all the most special one's to make it all the greater. And then came the sound effects to give everything life, and the dragons! There is so much magic to this movie, and this WORLD that these animators have created its irreplaceable. This drive, and emotion, and spirit of this movie truly made me cry in joy. They were right, the music is just as important as every other little piece. Its that final touch of magic to bring everything to life. One day, I'll be doing this. I'll get there. And I'll raise some dragons of my own. I'm so glad to have seen this world.
+Chronicler Enigma you want to join as a caster actor in how to train your dragon?
25:55 Jay and Gerard, the impersonations of each other... priceless!
so true, I always wondered if they ever looked at each other and were like 'I don't sound like that, who what is this character?' that was byfar my fav moment so far I'm still watching.
😂😂😂😂😂😂I couldn't stop laughing I kept watching that part so many times
This movie was my inspiration to become an artist. This footage makes me emotional ngl
This is in my opinion the best animation-film ever made.
The score is out of this world and the story is so touching and entertaining at the same time.
What an achievement! What a joy to see the network of hearts and hands in the process of making this gem.
Thanks for this DreamWorks "Tonic". Really!
From the bottom of my heart.
Greets from Germany!
Agreed
So cool to see all the hard work that goes into storytelling. Everyone these days wants everything quick and easy, and the best things in life take time to simmer and breath and tweak, and tweak, and tweak.
Yup made that's why a lot of movies suck
It's really nice to see how much love and care went into making this film (Especially since it's my favorite movie of all time). Everyone that worked on this film should feel proud for helping produce this masterpiece.
I really hope that in HTTYD 2, there are some of those awesome scenes where there isn't any dialogue and the scene is just played out by the animation and the music, because those moments were the some of the big highlights of the first film, and it would be incredible to see more of those moments in the 2nd one. :)
Well, wish came true
I've been a huge fan of HTTYD ever since it came out, I literally have an entire youtube playlist of analysis videos about the film and trilogy! How did I not know this film existed?? It was inspiring, heartfelt, and passionate. It's incredible to watch the process from start to finish, and to appreciate each of the people who worked on the film. Literally everyone put so much heart into the film, and it shows. I always love watching the credits after a movie, especially this one. The hard work and creative process is so admirable, and I love recognizing and appreciating talent.
Also the fact that they get to go to a spa for the sound design process?? absolutely amazing
Can you link the playlist??
This is the best thing ever. I love seeing how httyd was made to become a masterpiece
I cried near the end of the video because of the passion they put into this movie, I'm so grateful it exists
i cant wait until i become an animator! this whole process ignites my dream to make meaningful animated films!
Hmmmm....... I think I want to be a storyboard artist. I like art.
oh cool! Storyboarding looks like fun too :D
I like fun :D
me too :D
SpaceMonkiiBob I wanna be an author!
Love that they took so much time discussing the Forbidden Friendship, Stoick saving Hiccup and Toothless, and Hiccup losing a foot.
These were my favorite moments. Very impactful + the music 💕
This movie changed everything. It saved my life. And it was the final element of my decision to work in animation, because I want to give kids what this movie gave me. I will always stand up for this movie and for Dreamworks. I am forever thankful.
Ok that’s it, i wanna grow up and do what everyone on this documentary does. Create real stories with real and passionate characters and ideas, a real inspiration truthfully, childhood movie 100000000000/10
The Music made this movie absolutely perfect! :D I adore the music! I have the soundtrack and I listen to it all the time... probably one of the best animated soundtracks ever made! John Powell you're a genius! :D Thank you for making beautiful music that perfectly matched the movie!
John Powell should have gotten an Oscar for that amazing score.
DuffBeer2nd Totally. Not That social media movie's crappy, annoying, music in no way shape or form should or COULD have beaten John Powell's HTTYD music..
So many spine-tingling moments just watching this doc, never mind the film! Unlike so many of these 'behind-the-scenes' featurettes, which are little more than advertisements, this one actually provides great insight into the actual making of the film, including many of the smaller moments which make it so special. Just a shame this wasn't on the dvd/blu-ray!
Dreamworks definitely is the place of my dreams.I hope to God that I can go through those doors one day.
Thanks to this film, I discovered that I want to be a digital animator. :)
Thanks Dreamworks, for creating such amazing stories. ^..^
any updates? Did you end up becoming an animator, i would love to know!
Ive watched this video so many times now and I always cry at the music part. That's one of the best scores ever made hands down.
Oh my god, the part where Gerard and Jay impersonate each other is so good!
I think I could do a whole TED talk about how AMAZING this movie is. The sequals as well
Why i saw that just now!!!!! I cry in the end! I cry ALWAYS when i hear that music!!! 😭😭💕 THANK U THANK U THANK U GUYS!
I swear, Chris Sanders looks like Grimmel
Ever since i watched this movie, it completed and expanded my obsessions for dragons. When i was little before i've watched this movie i used to draw dragons on a CN sketchbook. Still drawing HTYYD dragons to this day
Chris Sanders...master of hand talking
25:54 Gerard's Hiccup impression was pretty on point! lol XD
"Is that a vaccum cleaner? on their balcony? That's weird." I laughed so hard I almost dropped my laptop.
@38:23 - I only discovered HTTYD in July 2021 (So late), but when I watched it for the first time, the music really stood out to me and I aspired to be John Powell since then. I've never heard such enchanting music before.
I love how this is called "finding the story" because the movie was so different from the book
I could listen to the soundtrack over and over (and I do!).
If I had a time machine, the first thing I'd do is go back in time and join this crew in making of this movie...
Seeing the passion and even messiness that went into making one of my favorite movies makes it even better. It’s amazing to be able to follow these creators through the process and just seeing how real they are and how much they cared
All of these people working for years so we can enjoy a movie that lasts 1 and half hour.Amazing.Alla your hard work has payed off.We love you all and your movie and we are begging for more!
I love it when making of films don't talk down to you. I love seeing all the "boring" details.
The animators acting out their scenes is hilarious especially when they look nothing like their characters.
Me one day.
ahh i love watching their creative process when developing the story. Dreamworks should really follow their way of thinking for their other movies.
I dont know but this is "Living life to the fullest" for me Wow. I imagine to see John Powell playing his music is absoloutly magical! And talking and discussing such a impactful story is the most fun thing i can dream of.
I've seen many movies in my life but How to Train Your Dragon is my favourite it is so beautifully made its a story with so much heart I basically fall into tears when ever I watch it. The animation is amazing the soundtrack is off gods iPod the characters are loveable and the way they captured the father son relationship and hiccup- toothless "forbidden" friendship is genius! Well done! Can't wait for the sequel I also loved the show and can't wait for defenders of Berk to begin
How to Train Your Dragon was released on March 18, 2010.. And I was born on March 17, 2010...
Its all so cool...
There is a very good TV series - Dragons: Riders of Berk. The series serves as a bridge between the first movie and its sequel. I loved it. :)
Chris Sanders is so funny at the beginning!
24:35
Hiccup: It's just that there's no part of this I can tell you without... risking our relationship!
Astrid: Well since we don't HAVE one, you have NOTHING to lose!
I kinda like that they didn't keep it in the film. At least as far as I remember
Httyd is the best movie with the best music
This is why it's such a good movie, they focus more on the story rather than focusing on the image details, all though the graphics and image details is amazing! ^^
5:26 so that's why the story was so good
I love the first guy talking about his office
“As you can see, everything is perfectly within reach... because nothing is put away.”
Haha 😆👌🏼👌🏼 we love
this is so cool. watching this kinda makes me want to work on a movie, just to be in an environment like this.
i don't get how people that look so serious can write such a story full of wit and heart! this is definitely one of my favorite animations :)
Being serious doesn't mean you're heartless
they really made something special and heartwarming. and what they did with the second movie, wow!
OMG I always wondered if they were recording and saw the movie and 'Stoick' listened to 'Hiccup' and thought like , 'I don't sound like that!' And he didn''t even notice at first! You know, Jay reminds me a lot of me, just the way he is, just like, well, Hiccup does.
The music still gives me chills! :)
Who’s here 2021?
Is it wrong I'm near tears? This is too amazing!! I love this movie and Chris Sanders is so humorous and awesome xD
I love Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. 22:23 makes my day. I would love to meet these guys someday.
Wow, this is my biggest dream! To write a book and then make an animated movie about it! I admire you guys so much! :)
27:45
“How are you guys feeling about a big Stoick sacrificial moment?”
Me: so you’re the one that killed Stoick
I would kill to help these guys for just a day
That's how much I love their animation the show is also just incredible😁
The creation of a legendary movie
This is truly amazing!! Such a wonderful team of people who are so passionate about their jobs! Goes to show how much time and effort are needed to create something as powerful and magical as "How to Train Your Dragon"! :'D
Yes I watched this entire video because I am deeply in love with how to train your dragon. It has to be my most favorite series/trilogy I’ve ever seen among many others. I might cry. 🥲
24:38 oh it's just so you astrid ahahhhaha. but i think the scene is deleted somehow, never heard that converstation before in the movie. i think it suppose to be in the forest where astrid throw an axe and saw hiccup running through the woods.
i really appriciated this video thanks to this channel since i bursted into tears last week for #httyd3, and understand how they build this movie make me feel like im a part of this, living in their word, struggling to create this amazing world. Very glad for what you did.
Chris Sanders & Dean DeBlois did a very perfect job making this movie
Chris sander wrote me about the how to train your dragon ^_^ I'm honored!
23:32- that doorbell scared him !
Little_ NightFury17 23:32
I personnally dont remember the first time I watched this movie and that makes me really sad because omg!! But what I do know is that it’s the music that made me go back to it, I was watching tik Tok and heard test drive and I was like “I know this” so I looked it up, saw it was httyd, listened to a few of the songs and completely fell in love with the score like I’m still listening to it now and it’s been months
Since then I’ve fell in love with each and every character, got a toothless plushie and forced pretty much every friend of mine to watch it, I’ll never be thankful enough for the joy this movie brings me, really so thank you dreamworks
i am obsessed with animation and these films thanks for putting this up it means a lot
Jay Baruchel's laugh at 25:55 is the cutest thing. #KawaiiUntilIDie
This video is so beautiful for so many reasons :')
Im so glad im not the only one! Because it lets you see the hard work and effort put into your favorite films!
They took a really long time with HTTYD and I really hope they do the same thing with HTTYD 2!
14 months actually. Obviously HTTYD2 was in production a lot longer.
Well they were working on the show so probably they didn't had alot of time
What? They were working on the show too? How could they if no one knew how the film would do? It took two KFP films until Legends of Awesomeness came out. I think the Turbo show is an exception 'cause DW thought it would become a hit no matter what. With HTTYD though, no one was certain if it was going to be as popular is it turned out.
Well ofc they were working on the show but I think they've finished it and then worked on the 2nd movie
I don't think the show is done just yet. Penguins of Madagascar takes place between the first two movies. Or at least it should despite it feeling like it's an entirely different universe altogether for obvious reasons. Still the show is currently on the air even though the third film came out and is thought to be the last film in the series.
2024
What an amazing HTTYD Journey.
Still the best animated movie of all time.
And yes
Best score of all time.
I can't believe that the recording studio HSRNY (Howie Schwartz Recording, New York), where they had all the actors recording together has closed down for good.
I think my heart was pounding the whole time I watched this
If it wasn't you would be dead.
Making of the Forbidden Friendship 13:47
Chris's monologue from 22: 07 is my favorite.
"Is that a vacuum cleaner...? On their balcony...? That's weird..." *DING*
Thank you for putting this up, it was amazing to see the root of one of Dream Work's master piece.
I am a sucker for animation so I am easily impressed by animated pictures. But this one is not just good. It is absolutely great one. It took me on an emotional rollercoaster that no other had done before. Even for the sole frame where the dragon dives into the fire to save our hero. I am speechless to express what strong impact it had on me, like the world stopped for a sec, like... I really am speechless. thanks for creating such magic. All the best and Keep on amazing us :)
Ikr
There is a sequel in the making, the only thing they've given away about the plot is that now that they have dragons they have a lot more freedom to explore, so new places and characters :)
Thank you very much for making such a beautifull movie!
15:00 Wow, I LOVE seeing them coming up with this idea!!
I watched this movie when I was 5 and I haven't stopped loving it since then and it's actually sparked my curiosity to find more creatures in life
I'll never forget this movie or any others in my life
how to train your dragon is my favrouit movie it is the best in the world
i honestly LOVE the music in this film, it's so heart worming and it's so rich, TBH i listen to the soundtrack on my phone wells am going bed because it's an amazing music
Yep
I really can't wait for the sequel! In the new movie though, I would really love to know what happened to Hiccup's mother, and what she looks like.
That Chris guy looks like my grandfather, except without a beer gut. How to train your dragon is one of my fav DreamWorks movie, I love watching how movies are develop, so I can understand it more.
If Hiccup will be befriend a dragon, should be big and terrifying....and adorable and cuteness on the side...
That hilarious moment at 23:01 when he’s going through which actor was coming and trying to figure out what he’s supposed to have prepared
“that means the scenes I’m writing... the scenes I’m writing are...” and you can see so clearly, absolute horror dawning on his face before he says “... all of them”
I think those who created hiccup were very inspired by its beauty :D 🥰😍😍😍😍😍
watching this again as the hype builds-up for the 15th anniversary live action in 2025!
Wow. This is just inspiring and constantly making me emotional throughout the entire thing, truly shows the hard work and love input into the movie
Dreamworks you are amazing keep doing great things
Dragons: Defenders of Berk will premiere September 10th, 2013.
How to train your dragon 3 is scheduled for June 18th, 2016
Thankyou for making this wonderfull movie
