Hey everyone! If you like seeing me from 3 years ago dissecting film, come see how I execute my knowledge with my newest short film found here: ua-cam.com/video/E97N0ktR0AQ/v-deo.html
for me i first watched it as soon as it hit home release cause my dad had gotten it along with a bunch of other movies for cheap from a discount video store and was a computer wiz programmer who copied all of them to a server that he had connected to the xbox 360 and for little like 9 to 10 year old me being a kid with high functioning autism and adhd and a childhood up to that point that had made me ridiculously independant and mature for my age to the point that i would say that 12 was were i hit the maturity most people have by the time they're at least 30 and i felt weird and awkward not being even close to how well, childish my friends were wanting to do this stupid thing or that idiotic thing but only being dragged along cause part of me thought fitting in was better than being me and seeing that first HTTYD movie was so impactful for me that i legit watched it so many times my sisters banned the movie unless they werent around to be forced to watch it literally the few hundredth time....... what i like more tho is that you can look at all 3 as one full complete mega movie almost and having watched each one as it came out with my age being so close to hiccup in them especially now as im 21 years old, the third movie especially made me sad that this trilogy had ended but its end was so perfect showing that when we grow up there are choices we have to make as adults that are best for those around us and those we love and that often means giving up on certian things from our childhood whether that be attitude or short fuse or maybe a sport you liked playing on a school team or maybe just the things you loved as a kid not being the same things you love as an adult but that doesnt mean you have to lock them away forever. that childish side of you is always allowed to come back when you want to have some fun for yourself or with those you love like perhaps showing YOUR kids something you loved as a kid to hopefully give them that same joy you loved so dearly...
i love httyd i have seen rtte 5 times going on 6 I have a probleme I actuly was interdused to the franchise by the second moviee but cant pick a favorit i think my favorit dragon is probably bewilderbeast or armor wing
hot take, but dragons riders of Berk was a goated show that was the perfect series for the movies as it shown the growth and change to Berk as dragons continued to be part of their lives
Fun fact! The scene where Toothless hesitates for a second before putting his nose against Hiccup's hand was actually an animation glitch! But it fit so well for the moment that they left it in! :D
I'm not sure about that. I remember they mentioned it on the commentary, saying that the animator made Toothless lean forward before catching himself, only to lean into his hand anyway. That said, it could still be a glitch, but I think both versions fit well.
One thing that really stands out to me about this movie is that the weather isn't perfect. It doesn't have perfect sunlight for most of it and then rain on sad moments like other movies. Most the time it is foggy, damp, grey or dark, and it doesn't change specifically for certain points of the plot.
@@expiredmilk5435Thing is, as an avid HTTYD fan, there’s barely any times when Berk actually has snow or ice on it apart from very few moments in movies or episodes in the TV shows. Most of the time it just looks kinda calm and temperate. The kinda place that would be nice to walk in the woods, etc…
@@expiredmilk5435 Yep. One thing I will say is that when it does snow, it goes hard. In the episode with the speed stingers, the entire ocean freezes and forms a land bridge. This sort of implies that this kind of thing happens offscreen during winter
Underrated scene that goes overlooked constantly is Gobber and Stoic’s conversation in the big dining hall. Gobber’s character is at it’s absolute purest with both his goofy and grounded nature coexisting beautifully, and Stoic is showing is inner conflict with his disappointment in Hiccup as well as his concern for him. If you ask me, it is one of the best scenes in the movie because it encapsulates everything about the perspective those two have on Hiccup.
Stoic and Valka's reunion in the second movie gets me everytime; the sheer jaw dropping, pure, uncomplicated, astonished, forgiving gratitude on Stoic's face as he slowly, inexorably walks towards her, like walking towards the gates of Heaven, and her half-hearted readiness rapidly tilting towards eagerness bordering on desperation, to start an argument to defend choices Stoic already, unspokenly, forgives, doesn't even care about; why she it there is beyond him at that moment, only THAT she is there, rather than face all this she could see in his eyes is perfect.
“You can’t stop him Stoic, you can only prepare him. The truth is you’re not always going to be around to protect him. He’s going to get out there again, he’s probably out there now.”
I never paid attention to that scene as a kid. It's something of which I only started seeing the nuances when I became an adult, and that rewatch value is what makes a film one of my favorites
My favorite in HTTYD is the CHARACTER DESIGN and the MOVEMENTS. Toothless's movements are absolutely incredible, it reminds me of a cat. His proportions are beautiful and so fluid. The way the dragons move is one of my favorites.
@Sofia Laya Yes it is, one of the staff (in the making of the special short "gift of the night fury") attached a clip on her cat's tail and recorded the reaction, which was used as a reference for the animation
One of my favorite underrated moments of animation is after Stoic yells at Hiccup and tells him that he has no son, and when he leaves that room there is a look of shock and sadness on his face as he contemplates what he just said to his own son. It’s so brief and so beautiful. And, of course, the animation is perfection, and the music is grand and great. The flight scenes are so well shot, so fantastically lit, so lovingly scored, that they lift my spirits and give me goosebumps. Seriously, Social Network got the Oscar for best original score and not this?
And the hes tries to slam the door shut but it bounces slightly open again. I think that adds to the hesitation when he walks out because it’s almost like he’s got a chance to go back to hiccup and apologise. He regrets what he said. It shows hiccup still has hope, and Stoic doesn’t truly despise him. Idk just me 🤷♂️
@@henryturner2258I think you’re right, what we’ve come to expect is the door slamming shut. it always catches me off guard even tho I’ve seen this movie countless times, the door slams shut then it opens again, I think that was a deliberate choice to make sure the door opens again after it is closed. Couple that with the shot of Stoick staggering back after he realizes the weight of what he just did, and it’s almost guaranteed that the door still being open has significance.
I actually cried because of that scene, idk why but that sort of bond between father and son always gets me, so when Stoic dies in the second film I cried even worse.
I knew the score was going to be the last point... and it still hit like a freight train. John Powell created a masterpiece that will forever remain as one of the best to ever exist
Honestly I don't really like the score throughout the HTTYD movies. While I absolutely love the romantic flight and test drive songs, I find that almost the entire soundtrack is just the same theme over and over again with slight variations. It's a really good base theme, but there's not enough different themes.
@@sebastianjost so just to sum it up, the entire soundtrack introduced a character and assigned them a theme song. It was just the idea they went with, and did really cool things with it. Like the main theme flying through the rocks in the first movie had toothless’ soundtrack combined with the Vikings theme song to make one big score that connected the two groups together. It was repetitive for a reason, but obviously doesn’t appeal to everyone
Good to see that in recent years animated media is not just shrugged off as something made purely for kids but as a mode of expression that has a surface layer that kids surely will enjoy but has many subsurface layers that teenagers, adults and people of all ages can understand and relate to. Glad to see that the industry is changing. I'm also glad to see that studios are making animated content purely for teenagers and adults. Arcane, Entergalactic and I Lost My Body are some examples of movies made for teenagers and adults with stunning visuals.
During test drive, there are 2 main themes for the majority of the scene. Hiccups theme with strings and more of an orchestra, and toothless's theme with more horns and brass. They alternate when one character is in more control then the other but at the end when they are perfectly in sync, the themes combine beautifully to make the main chorus of the entire movie and I get goose bumps every time I hear it.
It is the other way around, toothless' theme is test drive, we know this because when he is doing the air brake scene after they start falling from their first flight (as you said, toothless was in control), and when he was caught in the net, a slower version of his theme plays, his theme is purely melody, and strings, whereas hiccups is the big boomy brass, and supports toothless' theme, but I agree, it gives me goosebumps like no tomorrow, only brought this up for clarification
@@MegaBond101 The third one has a little too many events going on. The plot twist is much easier to predict when compared to the last 2 films. We didn't get much character interaction because it focuses more on toothless's love story. Nonetheless, I wouldn't say it was disappointing. We all know that was the best possible ending for the trilogy.
Race to the edge has some questions that need answered like what happened to Heather and Dagger what where they during the events of How to Train Your 2 3
I love humor in series, especially gober’s the plot twists are so well made I’ll highlight the one with Gustaf. I thought he was imposter but then he did everything to beat up hunters with hiccup
It's an adaptation that doesn't follow the original story but is full of love and passion for the source material. Too many directors adapt something without capturing what made the original source so special and so popular. It's amazing what DreamWorks accomplished!
@ratofalady8125 it's a children's book series. Toothless was originally one of the small gremlin dragons and it followed Hiccup training his little dragon and describing all the different types of dragons. The art is identical to what we see in the dragon manual.
Forbidden Friendship has always been the most iconic piece in the score for me... It just blows me away every time. And when you get to the end when Hiccup discovers his leg is gone and wakes up, and that same theme reprises... I swear it almost makes me cry every time. That's some powerful music. This film's score has been a favorite every since I first saw this in the theaters.
Couldn’t agree more. Definitely my favorite sound track of all time. It means sooooo much to me and I can’t really express how many emotions that piece can make you feel.
The flight animation of the dragons is so utterly realistic, and thats the major thing that stands out to me in this movie. The animators supposedly had to study physics with birds and airplanes. The detail in this movie never disappoints.
I love HTTYD and it's my favorite animated movie as well. My friends however, just see it as a kids movie and nobody wanted to go with me to the 3rd movie. But those same friends all went to see Toy Story 4 with me. Talk about some double standards.
Friend I feel you. I went with a friend who probably never saw the first three and I was crying multiple times watching Hidden World first opening Friday night - she asked me right after the credit started rolling - “so, why did you cry?” I was about to ask her “do you want me to answer chronologically or alphabetically”......
A small detail I loved in the second httyd was when Astrid braided his hair at the start, and he had those 2 little braids in his hair for the rest of the movie. It was such a small detail, but that dedication to each tiny thing really stood out to me
I usually don‘t have this connection with music. Like, I listen to music, but the songs never really stick with me. Except for a couple ones. Every once in a while I hear a song that just makes something inside me swirl and fills me with so much emotion and just genuinely happy. And when I heard that one moment in ‚Test Drive‘ (I think you know wich one I‘m talking about) I was in tears. It was so much at once and I can‘t really explain it, but… It just means so much to me. This music…
Another detail I didn’t realize until I got older is that Toothless grabbed hiccups leg with his mouth to save him. The movie started with hiccup shooting Toothless’ tail. It’s so beautiful
I know it's been pointed out so many times but I feel one of the strengths of the film is that Toothless is lot like Stitch: both appearance-wise and demeanor-wise. He has features that perfectly balance cute, badass and even a bit scary. And it works for his role: he's eerie enough to be unsettling when we first see him and he's still hesitant and unfamiliar, he's cute enough for the audience to share Hiccup's closer affection as they bond, and cool enough to look absolutely badass when he and Hiccup finally throw down against the Red Death. He is so many things at once and he can show very different sides of himself at different times: all without any dialogue or even the capacity to talk. Also it's actually kind of charming how the different dragon species aren't conventionally cute: many of them are objectively hideous-looking and rather scary with their spikes and frills and very gnarly teeth. And yet, they manage to be very endearing and expressive once we see the softer side to them.
I think that was one of the underlying themes of the movie - the fighting appearance of some of the dragons could almost be a standin for how different groups of people often fear each other, seeing "the other" as monsters when, in truth, they're just people, with more fundamentally in common than different. It was ignorance of why the dragons were raiding the village that lead to so many vikings and dragons killing each other in the movie, a knowledge that lead to resolving it, to Vikings and dragons even living side by side, not unlike how it's often ignorance, lack of understanding, that leads to so many conflicts and division among people in the real world.
What I like the most about the story is how Hiccups is the hero, because hes emotional sensitive, insightful and creative and totally breaks with the gender role of the strong male viking (kind of like Wickie). And then he gets his "stubborn" but caring dad to trust him and change while you can really feel the struggle of his dad being inbetween change, admitting he was wrong and his urge to defend and care for Hiccups.
Stoick didn't need to change honestly, he meant well because he didn't want to lose anymore family (he assumed his wife died because of dragons) so it's understandable why he was so stubborn. He simply just needed to let go of his grief and listen to Hiccup for it.
This trilogy is phenomenal. The details here are so absurd, whenever hiccup makes toothless a new equipment, toothless gushes to hiccup's intelligence, and vice versa.
I will never get enough of HTTYD video essays, mostly because there will never be enough words to accurately describe how amazing this film is and what it did for those that grew up with it.
The Forbidden Friendship song alone brings me through so much nostalgia and brings me to tears I won't lie. I was 9 years old when the first How to Train Your Dragon came out. I grew up with Toothless, Hiccup, and the whole crew from Berk. It's insane how we've grown and gotten older just as the Hiccup and Co has too.
Test Drive will always have me weak. I get goosebumps every single time. The way the movements align with the music is the most satisfying thing I’ve ever seen in a movie
Every single time I see this movie, I get a sad feeling that those times are over, but I also get a happy feeling that it happened, exactly the meaning of the sentence "Don't be sad that it ended, be happy that it happened." This is my favorite movie of all time, It's way ahead of it's time.
I never get sick or rewatching this movie. I can't get enough of it, it's practically perfect. All three movies are right up there in my top list. They're not my favorite of all time, (The Lego Movie holds that honor, and i actually relate to the whole coming-out-the-theatre-a-changed-person thing, because that was the same with me and that movie) but all three I'd say would be third.
You know that feeling when you're about to cry, but don't really do so, I get that feeling everytime I see/hear a sequence of test drive or anything really httyd
A few month ago I watched somebody analysing just the score and it is incredible what John Powell did there, creating a theme for every character and introducing that theme alongside the characters in the beginning. And then he combines those themes while there characters are bonding. Especially in test drive, the themes of Hiccup and Toothless are merched.
I'm nearly 2 years late to the party and like most of you I also fell in love with this trilogy. Only difference is that I only discovered it 6 months ago, how I've managed to live 20 years of my life without this trilogy is beyond me. The night after watching the trilogy in one sitting was long to say the least, I couldn't sleep at all because I couldn't stop thinking about what I had just saw, it was different then any other movie I had seen, and up until that point, I didn't have a favorite movie because no other movies had connected with me as much as this trilogy did. I knew why I loved this trilogy so much but couldn't put it into words, you basically summed up everything for me. I really hope you plan on releasing videos about the 2nd and 3rd movies, for me they nearly are held as high as the 1st movie. The 1st one is literal movie perfection and no one will change my mind about that.
I'm 7 months late to reply but welcome to the fandom! If you haven't seen them already I bet you'll enjoy the series as well: Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, and Race to the Edge is my all time favorite!
@@liyuan492 Thanks, and I’ve seen it all at this point, love every aspect of this franchise. Every movie, show, short and everything in between, I love it all!
Not only is the animation amazing, but the music tied this whole movie together. I also saw the first movie in theaters when I was little. I was there for a birthday party set up for a close friend and next-door neighbor. I remember walking out of the theater in tears, but I was not sad. I was overjoyed. These movies filled my mind with flight and my heart with music. That's what really makes these movies that much more special to me. These pieces of music surround and fill you with a sense of wonder that I have never seen replicated. Its soaring strings and triumphant brass take you on a journey through the sky you never want to be let down from. When I hear this music, I'm no longer a girl with a painfully ordinary life. When I hear this music... I'm a dragon.
my brain cannot fathom what this movie makes me feel. it's indescribably, mind boggling-ly, ineffably crazy awesome. this movie is incredible and i'd give my entire life to watch it for the first time again. dreamworks did such an incredible job and i am so proud and thankful for them making this film. i cannot think of any words in any language that can convey how much i love this movie and how it makes me feel
This movie changed 12 year old me forever. It gave me the courage to stand up to my father, to trust my friends with what was happening at home for the first time and later helped me through years of recurring leg injury. It ignited my love for composition for film and I have followed John Powells Music ever since.
Another small detail of the score is how the test drive theme is the only one that doesn’t appear in the opening, it’s still a part of the unknown. As the movie progresses, it’s first introduced in the forest when hiccup finds toothless for the first time, but in a minor key. It’s heard but the connection isn’t clear yet, it’s distorted. Then finally when hiccup and toothless are together flying they finally become one. Another stroke of pure brilliance.
I watched HTTYD 1 at least 100 times when it came out and i got it. Then somehow i forgot about it and now, 12 Years later, im done watching all movies, series and the extra moives. It is easily my most favourite movie and i cant get over it that it has come to an end. Everytime i hear any soundtrack from the movies i tear up. I will never ever forget these movies again and im still wondering how i could forget about such a masterpiece.
Thank you for this video. I truly thought no one could appreciate this movie as much as I do. I legitimately once watched this movie three times in one day yet it still got me sobbing on each of the viewings. There's nothing I don't like about HTTYD and I can say with no hesitation at all that this is the best movie ever made. Like you said, I just can't get enough of it.
this is my favorite movie trilogy of all time, but it can get difficult at times re-watching the first one, as it was one of the last movies i saw in theatres before i lost my mom. she would've been so happy to see the second and third movies, and it hurts that i never got to see them with her.
That thing you said about asking your mom to watch another movie, seeing it by yourself and changing you as a boy - making you less scared to do things differently, your way - resonates a lot with me. This feeling is just so awesome to experience!
I remember walking to the theater and seeing it when I was oh 19 or 20 and then I walked out of it and I was like in a daze I'm like what is that what's that movie as good as I thought it was or am I just that desperate movie. Then when I was in the car driving home I was smiling the whole time and I'm like no that movie was as good as I thought it was. I've been proceeded to see it two more times and got the entire McDonald's set. One of the best damn movies I've ever seen
21:50 even without the music playing, that part of the scene gives me chills. The cinematography and directing here is perfect and so satisfying to watch Toothless catch the wind just above the trees
god i absolutely love hiccup and toothless’s bond. it made me tear up the first time i watched the movie cause it feels decently realistic and the build up of their relationship throughout the movie warms my heart
I have goosebumps watching this. How to Train your Dragon was THE movie that accompanied me through my whole childhood. I‘ve see it like 30+ times and I know half of the texts off by heart
Just let me describe the film with a few words, legendary, touching, positivity, realistic, reletable, because honestly this is my FAVOURITE film of ALL TIME🥰🤪
The how to train your dragon franchise is probably my absolute favorite animated I've ever seen. The art, soundtrack, story and voice acting set it apart. 900/10
The time I was old enough to watch this movie, it didn’t run in cinemas anymore. I wish I would have got to experience this piece of art on the big screen. Still my favourite Movie with 15 years. 😢❤
Did you notice the recording studio? In the scenes where 2 actors are in the studio together, they're in a wooden studio, which extra conveys the location of the scene in the movie: the wooden viking houses. I think that's just really cool. Love this movie.
To this day and probably forever more, this will be my all time favorite movie. There have been many movies that I've enjoyed like No way home, Free guy, kung fu panda and so on. But no other movie can top that feeling of being able to watch it over and over again and still feel satisfyed
Another part of this movie that’s fantastic is the intro scene. Intro scenes are vital, but this film’s intro is probably the best intro I’ve ever seen. Every character gets introduced, context is given, and the world remains consistent. They nailed it!
Toothless is cutest creature to ever exist. He is everything at once, adorable, beautiful, menacing, the balance of all three make him an unparalleled character. He is so powerful emotionally and visually to viewers
One of my favorite movie scenes has to be Stoik and Hiccup's argue at the near end. The writing, animation and voice acting mold together SO nicely to show the impact of the scene. Even after Stoik leaves the Great Hall I almost burst out in tears when I saw him realize what just happened between him and his son. Also best movie quote ever goes to: "Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile."
My favorite movie score is test drive. Hearing toothless's and hiccup's themes mix together into a masterpiece is just so good. I can just feel the score. I don't know how to describe it.
"How To Train Your Dragon" is like one of the 'once in a lifetime' greatest film we will ever see like "Lord of The RIngs" (in animated film of course).
HTTYD-1 hit me so hard. I still enjoy watching it. Every scene had a background score and I would forget all my worries listening to them. Toothless also reminds me of my first pet. There was also someone similar to Astrid! A trip down the memory lane and its all so refreshing and satisfying.
Me getting emotional and crying watching this video bc it’s genuinely one of the most beautiful animated movies of all time and I’m so glad there’s a community that thinks the same way
I was literally holding back tears the entire video. This film holds such a special place in my heart for all these reasons and more. One of the most beautiful works of film art in the modern age.
my favourite instance of interesting camera movement is in the final battle when they divebomb the red death to force it to take flight, and the camera moves from behind the tail up the pack and into an almost pov. its so dynamic and engaging
This movie remains my all-time favourite. I remember seeing the tail-end of this film at a family gathering when I was still young and the credits music captivated me. Years later, I met my best friend and she showed me this movie in full and I realized that it was the movie I saw during the gathering that day. My best friend kickstarted my love for this movie and all subsequent films, and I couldn’t be more thankful.
This video reminded me of how much I loved this series of films. I have just rewatched all of them and have fallen back in love with the series. Thank you.
This is the magnum opus of story telling for me. I’m sure there’s plenty of nostalgia that plays into my bias here, but I seriously can’t go a single frame though this movie without being awed by it. The story is immaculate, so unique and special. It’s the only movie I’ve ever cried to even at 19. I don’t express emotion well and don’t cry often. Whenever I think back to the last time I cried, it’s always this and it’s in a good way.
As someone who loves art, animation, cartoons, and dragons, this trilogy was a GODSEND !! I love them so so very dearly. They put so much love and effort into the movies and it *shows*! The music scores, the dragon designs, the models, the fluidity of animations, the way hiccup and toothless' relationship buds and develops? So! So! Amazing!!!! I will always love it and miss the movies so much
also, as someone who over analyzes movements in shows, i LOVED the small details in everything. small blinks, staggering steps, the weight of carrying things, it's all so detailed. and in that first flying scene, you can see Hiccup almost pulling on the saddle to help Toothless make some turns. i love how well they fly together just. y e s
i was listening to the soundtrack last night, and for some reason, i just started sobbing while test drive and romantic flight were playing 🥹 it’s my favorite soundtrack ever. even thought it was nominated for both, which is still crazy, it should’ve won the oscars back in 2011 for best original score and best animated movie.
This video is so on point… I’m so glad I found it. Some of the things you said and quoted really gave me confidence and encouragement to create a story of my own (something I’ve wanted to do for a long time). Also I’d like to mention my favorite scenes and songs, “Forbidden Friendship” and “Where No One Goes”. Thanks for the passion and dedication you put into creating this video.
Thank you so much for stopping by! I’m currently writing a graphic novel and I’d be lying if I said the inspiration from Dragons wasn’t there. Keep creating! I’m sure your story will be amazing
After this video, I agree that this is one of the best animated films. Thanks for the video to help me see that. I actually almost teared up several times just rewatching the scenes with the details pointed out.
The 2nd and 3rd films are insanely underrated. They really are as good as the first movie. They're everything in the first movie but EXCELLED. The animation is even more gorgeous, the music is absolutely incredible, the story really gives depth to the characters and plot. The scenes are gorgeous, I could go on. The second movies music and scenes really go to show what they could do with it. The newly introduced characters and new looks for the characters was a big risk but turned out incredible. The third film was equally as amazing. The animation and lighting on each scene makes them beautiful. The hidden world is one of the most beautiful movie landscapes I've ever seen. Toothless is great along with the light fury. The music is amazing too. "Cliffside Playtime" being my favorite from the third film.
This video made me tear up. Not only is it incredibly endearing to listen to someone recount their tale of how a movie impacted them, in a way similar to your own experience with said movie, but just the simple act of singing praise to something that you adore/that inspires you, even when said movie is well past its pop culture influence, it helps immortalize that moment in time, that passion, that led to its existence in the first place. I still don't fully understand all the nuances of movie making, but I really enjoyed learning about it through the lens of scenes I'm familiar with, seeing the brilliant minds that made it happen, back when they didn't even know what the finished product would be. This was an emotional journey, thank you so so much for being passionate about it, and making this incredible video.
Definitively one of the greatest animation, ever created for the 2010’s… Sad that it was robbed of the Academy Award against Toy Story 3, I love Toy Story 3, but in my opinion it was better written than Toy Story 3… the animation, the cinematography, the writing and the music, which was Epic from John Powell….A flawless feature… You’ve just earned yourself a Sub….
When I was little, my dad transferred the movie on my iPod Nano(5th gen) and every evening when I had to go to bed at 8:15pm I startet watching the movie till 9pm and then finished it on the next day. I must have watched it at least 80 times and I knew every single word in the movie
100% behind everything you said, except...the forbidden friendship scene is the greatest animation I've ever seen. The lighting. The patience and trust without using words. The conveyance of emotions. The elegant sound design such as dropping a knife onto grass. The hesitation then cautious acceptance. The build of the score. The reaction of touch with the relief and supressed joy. Perfection. The details have always and ever left me breathless - the implication of the weight of wing membrane trembling with the wind underneath it. The eye. The depth of the ocean and the speed of the camera swoops. The reading of animal behaviours which is spot on. Yes, yes. Everything from the acting (what casting!) to the characters to the story to the heart and soul of it. It's a work of genius that each time I see it makes me marvel at the talent. Happy to have come across someone who sees it the way I do. But I tell ya, I was middle aged when I saw it, and was astounded by the artistry...followed seconds later with falling in love with Toothless. Still astounding to this day.

What are you 10? 😂
i love httyd i have seen rtte 5 times going on 6 I have a probleme I actuly was interdused to the franchise by the second moviee but cant pick a favorit i think my favorit dragon is probably bewilderbeast or armor wing
hot take, but dragons riders of Berk was a goated show that was the perfect series for the movies as it shown the growth and change to Berk as dragons continued to be part of their lives
Fun fact! The scene where Toothless hesitates for a second before putting his nose against Hiccup's hand was actually an animation glitch! But it fit so well for the moment that they left it in! :D
Follows the themes of making peace with your flaws and growing stronger from them.
Where did you hear that?
This made my day better
this just made me so happy.
Yeah, it's ironically funny how it's super sunny when they capture toothless and Hiccup loses everything lmao
That's bc it rains nine months of the year and hails the other three
@@expiredmilk5435Thing is, as an avid HTTYD fan, there’s barely any times when Berk actually has snow or ice on it apart from very few moments in movies or episodes in the TV shows. Most of the time it just looks kinda calm and temperate. The kinda place that would be nice to walk in the woods, etc…
@@xenomorphbiologist-xx1214 yeah idk why they say that in the beginning and end of the movie but don't show it
@@expiredmilk5435 Yep. One thing I will say is that when it does snow, it goes hard. In the episode with the speed stingers, the entire ocean freezes and forms a land bridge. This sort of implies that this kind of thing happens offscreen during winter
"Hiccup doesn't look like Cpt America or Thor" well he looks like Cpt America before the super soldier serum.
Trueeee
He also kinda looked like infinity war steve Rogers at the end of httyd 3. With the beard and all.
But ha doesnt change with drugs
bearded reminds me of PewDiePie
Dang it, I was gonna say that.
Funny seein you here, Mr. John Wilkes Boothe
I never paid attention to that scene as a kid. It's something of which I only started seeing the nuances when I became an adult, and that rewatch value is what makes a film one of my favorites
nobody here can spell Stoick
My favorite in HTTYD is the CHARACTER DESIGN and the MOVEMENTS. Toothless's movements are absolutely incredible, it reminds me of a cat. His proportions are beautiful and so fluid. The way the dragons move is one of my favorites.
i heard somewhere that they used cat photage for toothless' movement hahah
Toothless is heavily based off of cats. My mom said it best. "They're cats with wings".
@Sofia Laya
Yes it is, one of the staff (in the making of the special short "gift of the night fury") attached a clip on her cat's tail and recorded the reaction, which was used as a reference for the animation
We have a little black cat with green eyes and her nickname is toothless
I heard he's based on cats, dogs, and birds
One of my favorite underrated moments of animation is after Stoic yells at Hiccup and tells him that he has no son, and when he leaves that room there is a look of shock and sadness on his face as he contemplates what he just said to his own son. It’s so brief and so beautiful.
And, of course, the animation is perfection, and the music is grand and great. The flight scenes are so well shot, so fantastically lit, so lovingly scored, that they lift my spirits and give me goosebumps. Seriously, Social Network got the Oscar for best original score and not this?
19:56
Couple that with the shot of Stoick staggering back after he realizes the weight of what he just did, and it’s almost guaranteed that the door still being open has significance.
the animation is so good you can actually see his tears in his eyes. the great stoic with tears
Sticks and Stones, Test Flight, and Where no one goes are my favorite. And the last movie of this trilogy I consider is the perfect ending for it.
Honestly I don't really like the score throughout the HTTYD movies.
While I absolutely love the romantic flight and test drive songs, I find that almost the entire soundtrack is just the same theme over and over again with slight variations.
It's a really good base theme, but there's not enough different themes.
@@sebastianjost everyone’s has there own opinion. I must say it’s very common amongst Dreamworks animated movies. Especially Kung Fu Panda
They alternate when one character is in more control then the other but at the end when they are perfectly in sync, the themes combine beautifully to make the main chorus of the entire movie and I get goose bumps every time I hear it.
i think its the other way around but either way i agree
It is the other way around, toothless' theme is test drive, we know this because when he is doing the air brake scene after they start falling from their first flight (as you said, toothless was in control), and when he was caught in the net, a slower version of his theme plays, his theme is purely melody, and strings, whereas hiccups is the big boomy brass, and supports toothless' theme, but I agree, it gives me goosebumps like no tomorrow, only brought this up for clarification
I love this trilogy but I also love the series especially Dragons:Race to the Edge
Oml yes
That is such a good series
As a long time fan I can agree except for httyd 3.that one was yikes
Wait what's the source material?
@ratofalady8125 it's a children's book series. Toothless was originally one of the small gremlin dragons and it followed Hiccup training his little dragon and describing all the different types of dragons. The art is identical to what we see in the dragon manual.
DreamWorks was always good at that. Not only Dragons but also movies like Rise of the guardians, Shrek Captain underpants and newly also Bad Guys
honestly, my mom and i read the book and we really didn’t like it much, but then we watched the movie and went “wow, that was incredible”.
2 years later. Yoy the first comment to point out the amount of work.
Have you looked at the fire?
Its better than every other iteration.
I love HTTYD and it's my favorite animated movie as well. My friends however, just see it as a kids movie and nobody wanted to go with me to the 3rd movie. But those same friends all went to see Toy Story 4 with me. Talk about some double standards.
So sad to hear that! Hopefully they can change their minds eventually:)
HTTYD 3 looked amazing in 3D in the cinema!
Forced my ex gf to watch it with me when it came out 😂 she had no clue what was going on but I was having a great time
Saaaaaame I went with 3 friends who didn’t rlly care abt httyd and they couldn’t understand when i left the theatre bawling my eyes out
Friend I feel you. I went with a friend who probably never saw the first three and I was crying multiple times watching Hidden World first opening Friday night - she asked me right after the credit started rolling - “so, why did you cry?”
I was about to ask her “do you want me to answer chronologically or alphabetically”......
A small detail I loved in the second httyd was when Astrid braided his hair at the start, and he had those 2 little braids in his hair for the rest of the movie. It was such a small detail, but that dedication to each tiny thing really stood out to me
Also, after rechecking, he still had them in the 3rd movie, which is really cool
This music…

@@Capybara2240 After the Part When Hiccup and Toothless fell and then rose up again
It's not phenomenal. It's best.
@@Miron_Marnic Uhm that's the same?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who still gets chills during the "test drive" sequence, every time
I will never get enough of HTTYD video essays, mostly because there will never be enough words to accurately describe how amazing this film is and what it did for those that grew up with it.

I assume you mean the youtuber “Sideways” indeed a very good video, made me appreciate the music even more
I'm nearly 2 years late to the party and like most of you I also fell in love with this trilogy.

It's Toothless that makes film, I'm 60 years old and I absolutely adore his character
This movie changed 12 year old me forever. It gave me the courage to stand up to my father, to trust my friends with what was happening at home for the first time and later helped me through years of recurring leg injury. It ignited my love for composition for film and I have followed John Powells Music ever since.
'This is the story of becoming a hero the hard way' - The How To Train Your Dragon book
hits deep
Another small detail of the score is how the test drive theme is the only one that doesn’t appear in the opening, it’s still a part of the unknown. As the movie progresses, it’s first introduced in the forest when hiccup finds toothless for the first time, but in a minor key. It’s heard but the connection isn’t clear yet, it’s distorted. Then finally when hiccup and toothless are together flying they finally become one. Another stroke of pure brilliance.
The fact that I’m emotionally moved by the film through a video essay should tell you how A.) good this movie is & B.) how much I love this movie.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you have support and people who care about you.
That thing you said about asking your mom to watch another movie, seeing it by yourself and changing you as a boy - making you less scared to do things differently, your way - resonates a lot with me. This feeling is just so awesome to experience!
I would give everything to forget this movie then seeing it again for the first time

Just let me describe the film with a few words, legendary, touching, positivity, realistic, reletable,
because honestly this is my FAVOURITE film of ALL TIME🥰🤪
Hiccups Mom inspired me to name my youngest daugther after her.
My personal favorite scene is Stoics reaction and look when sees his wife again.
I only see a sliver of the test drive scene - goosebumps immediately... This is magic
In this day and age... i WISH WE CAN WATCH THIS ON IMAX!!!! The test driving sequence would be INSANE!

I’m 20 and I still have rise of Berk game just to remember the good times
John Powell knocked it out of the park with the soundtrack
My favorite movie score is test drive. Hearing toothless's and hiccup's themes mix together into a masterpiece is just so good. I can just feel the score. I don't know how to describe it.
"How To Train Your Dragon" is like one of the 'once in a lifetime' greatest film we will ever see like "Lord of The RIngs" (in animated film of course).
I recently rewatched this masterpiece and realized that it's the single best Dreamworks movie and the best animated movie I've EVER seen.
HTTYD-1 hit me so hard. I still enjoy watching it. Every scene had a background score and I would forget all my worries listening to them. Toothless also reminds me of my first pet. There was also someone similar to Astrid! A trip down the memory lane and its all so refreshing and satisfying.
When he said that the characters were the most iconic, I immediately thought about the music.

I was literally holding back tears the entire video. This film holds such a special place in my heart for all these reasons and more. One of the most beautiful works of film art in the modern age.
3:54 "Romantic Flight" gives me goosebumps and fills me with joy and oeace every time its played
my favourite instance of interesting camera movement is in the final battle when they divebomb the red death to force it to take flight, and the camera moves from behind the tail up the pack and into an almost pov. its so dynamic and engaging

The music, the story telling, the lighting, the music, the art direction, the voice cast, the music… all of it just simply perfect
After this video, I agree that this is one of the best animated films. Thanks for the video to help me see that. I actually almost teared up several times just rewatching the scenes with the details pointed out.
I've been all the How to Train Your Dragon shows series and movies so many times that I can sing along to the background music😅
This is a Masterpiece.
One of my favorite of all time.
Ngl, I teared up multiple times while watching this video. Just thinking about this movie and how it influenced my life a little over a decade ago :,D
Oh thank god you talked about the score, it's literally my favorite movie/tv show score. It's absolutely insane!
I've always said that HTTYD is a perfect movie
And you were right!
Test Drive, Forbidden Friendship, and Romantic Flight are all contenders for the greatest scenes I've ever seen in cinema.
