i've never seen a story were the villain defeats the hero at the beginning, goes through an existential phase, decides his life has no meaning without someone to stop him from achieving his goal, creates a super hero out of an everyday guy who turns out to be more of a villain, then the first villain is forced to fight the later one in oeder to save the status quo. If you say we saw that a million time before, i think i'm way out of the loop

+Ricado Santos nostalgia critic has always been very assholic against "kid" movies, he always wants to match them with some shit he saw that came years after the movie itself , i can't believe he says Mulan is simplistic and shit like that it is just the way he thinks about kid movies, he has said it before: "what can you expect from a disney movie?" like they were all the same movies, he is only good to review really bad movies and superhero movies , for the rest he is just tooo hipster for them

When did he say Mulan was simplistic? He's not being hipster, he's presenting his genuine opinion. That is a really unfair comment to make about someone who's sharing an opinion in a civil manner.

You know what this movie really suffered from? Horrible, horrible marketing.
I saw the trailer in the theater and just rolled my eyes because it looked so stupid, and when I finally decided to watch the thing, I found that it had a lot of heartfelt moments and unique ideas. The trailers didn't really portray what the movie was about, and so it ended up drawing a different crowd than it would have had, and those people probably didn't enjoy as much because of it. It's really a shame that something like Minions draws a crowd, when movies like this, making actual attempts at originality and story, get swept aside.

nothing against NC's opinion of the movie itself... but WOW did he screw up with the chronology.
Megamind pretended to be someone else to be with Roxanne, and when she finds out about that is when she turns him away. she didn't start a romance with him willingly, it was completely accidental. but after that, of course, they wind up working together to stop Titan.
also, the thing with Titan was happening alongside the Roxanne romance. Roxanne turning Megz down isn't the thing that made him create a new superhero, though she did give him the idea early on by accident.
also, i will always say this: Roxanne's character isn't ruined by her damselness! she's a normal human being in situation where superheros and villains are fighting each other. so even though i agree it would have been cool to see her beat those odds and be the hero, her being unable to beat up Titan or whoever is pretty... expected? since she has no powers? i dunno.

Megamind, in my opinion, is not only the best Dreamworks production, but one of the best animated feature-length movies EVER. The story is great, and animation fits, the jokes are hilarious, the romance is sweet and believable, the characters are consistent, and the ending it perfect. You can tell through watching it that this was a story that the creators were dying to write, and had a great time making. It truly is an underrated film, and one of my top five favorites.

This is probably one of my absolute sincere favorite movies from Dreamworks. Critic makes it sound like it's merely an "alright" movie but my word... I had such FUN watching this movie! Just grade A fun!! It was super, super enjoyable!
Sure, if you want to get technical there are "better" Dreamworks movies if you're following the "what constitutes a great movie" formula... but my word, Megamind is some of the most fun I've had watching an animated movie. It's SO underrated and deserves SO much more love!

To properly describe why I liked this movie so much, I think I'll have to quote the NC himself on what he said about the Emperor's New Groove: the villains are the ones that really made the movie for him.
Well, same for me and Megamind: this villain (ergo the hero lol) is what really made me obsess over this film for a little while (I think I re-watched it like 5 times or so XD). Megamind is one of those characters who are simply enjoyable to watch, regardless of the story they're in. I mean, the story's good too, but that wasn't all there was to it. The protagonist's little overreactions, his expressions, his attitude towards others and his whole dialogue are just so well made I never got tired of him.

I think the new angle they took here was the ."nice guy syndrome" angle which isn't very common. The villain, yes does have powers, but he's a REAL villain. Like the assholes you see on the news. He treats Roxanne like a real fucking person like she is then expects her to date him. Then he tries to kill her for rejecting him. This is real shit that you see on the news. Men raping and murdering women for rejecting them. All this movie really did was make it more appropriate for children. And Megamind is very respectful. He accepts that Roxanne isn't interested. He doesn't force himself on her. He actually does treat her like a human and doesn't expect anything in return. This movie was way deeper than a lot of people give it credit for.

As for Tina Fey's character. It's not a bad thing she's the damsel again. It's no degradation on her character because her character. The writers even said they needed a straight man between Megamind and Metro Man's ridiculous stunts. She's that stable character who's ok with herself. It's Megamind who needs to go through the change in character. Therefore it makes sense that in the climax of the film he is forced to care about someone other than himself and save her.

I... really cannot understand this review. Were we watching the same movie? "Seen this before." Uh, okay, when? Where? Show me a film where the villain wins? One where he realizes the chase was his reason to exist? Where he becomes the hero?
Megamind was fantastic. I took my two little nieces to see it and they laughed... and I laughed - A LOT. It was hilarious and inventive. Nothing felt forced or fake. The only crime was marketing failed it miserably and it feels like a film that is great, buuut very few people were even aware of.
Making the woman the hero? You are aware the film is called "Megamind" right? It's about Megamind and his journey, not some boring girl-power movie that will have you believing women suplex men and pee standing up, but choose not to.

    • @Leyvin

+Larry Wolf • I think the reason it can to some 'feel' like a cliché story is because of the Anti-Hero Trope. Something that is quite common, but in those situations we're not talking about an all-out Villain; merely someone who isn't a Heroic but has their abilities. • There is also another common trope of the "Last Minute Switch", where a Villain has a change of heart to help the Hero(es) but those are always left-field more Deus Ex Machinima because the writer can't figure out a 'Happy Ending' rather than good story telling. • Even if we look at Despicable Me, which is a similar concept of a Super Villain turned Hero... that occurs not because he wants to be a 'Hero" but rather in the first movie is entirely accidental, and in the second it's to both impress his daughters (who he wants to be proud of him) and proving that he's still "The Best" regardless which side he's on. • Megamind is a very different story to all of these. Sure it relies on the Superman Trope from which it is clearly parodying but Megamind himself never WANTED to be Evil or a Super Villain; rather it is merely a life that chose him, and rapidly becomes the only life he ever knew. Sure, he's terrible at it; but it's because he's actually good hearted and just lonely rather than a selfish jerk. • What ends up cool is the message, of being "True to yourself, not Societies Expectations... only then can you achieve happiness." - soppy and fortune cookie as it might be, it's still a good message for Kids and Adults; and a staple of DreamWorks Animated Films.

+Larry Wolf a movie where the bad guy wins? Doctor Horrible's Sing-a-long blog. The Superhero is constantly defeating the villian (who in the end is a good person) until the he actually wins causing the superhero to go through some life-altering change. but then realizes he, the villian, feels hollow because his purpose was fighting captian hammer and trying to win the girl. once penny dies and hammer is out of the way, he relishes in the victory for a little while but its heavily implied by the last shot that he regrets it all.

Many Batman stories have the "chase is the reason to exist" many villain stories have the "society created them" and they have redemption at the end like the kid in Deadpool 2 and many X-Men characters actually. A lot of superheroes movies have empowered women.

  • @GanonGhidorah
    @GanonGhidorah 7 років тому +20

I just don't get how the "Damsel in Distress" trope, even HERE gets criticized.
Here actually did something different, considering that in the beginning when she was in distress, she's all snarky and sarcastic about it because she doesn't perceive herself in any real danger. It's because she KNOWS that Metro-Man is always going to save her...until the first time when he doesn't.
Then we get a new villain who actually has powers, the hero is no where to be found, and the only guy who is available to stop the rampaging bad-guy, is the former-bad-guy who actually hasn't had a single legitimate victory against a super-being at all.
The end of the movie just feels like the stakes are actually higher, because no one is sure if Megamind can win...

Sometimes, I wonder if you just see what you want to in a film.

I don't understand how the critic gives it such a 'meh' rating.
This has to be one of my all-time favorite movies. It's fun, I found it funny (though to be honest only very few films make me actually laugh, but I did laugh at this a few times), The plot is probably as original as it gets, the action scenes, while few, are really nice (I love when Megamind goes 'But evil returns with a backhand!' and swats Titan out of the air. How calmly Megamind was in that fight and how smooth the animation was as a result was really great), their use of 80's music really accented the film, and I loved the satire that Metroman was. Like the way he would hold the microphone closer to his face when talking to Megamind, it made it look like half of the way he acted was the put on a show and please the fans, which made him feel more self-aware (as was Megamind) than every other superhero ever.

It's so creative, so inventive, so entertaining, so funny, so heartwarming, so well cast, so well written... DAMMIT, this movie blew me away with how brilliant it was and I still turn into a fangirl as I watch it. More and more people are realizing how great it is and... I kinda don't want a sequel, since it's perfect as is. But I wouldn't object to one if DW said they would make it. If they did it right, it could be good. But I don't think it's necessary.

I honestly loved this movie. I was expecting another horribly immature and pitifully slapped together film but instead this film features incredibly charming and relatable characters, and I personally enjoy that there isn't a ton of jokes, nor a ton of drama. I feel that Megamind managed to achieve a very rare, mature ability to balance humor with drama.

this movie could've been generic but I don't think it was
its like if the joker kills Batman then tries to take quell the chaos in gotham
or if superman wasn't born with his heroic spirit and tells lex luthor He wins and leaves being a hero behind him.
And its even more layered because it brings up the debate nature vs nuture which leads to do we control our destiny even if we were meant to play a different role, and is the path we are on currently even the path we were meant to be on?
personally I think it was an excellent concept with a good excecution which equals out to at least a great film.

The soundtrack was amazing, many of the flaws that could be perceived actually are just clever writing about the flair for dramatic the characters have, the movies does an excellent job at showing why the main protagonist has a "destiny can't be changed" point of view AND teach him out of it too... I think this movie is really excellent, but it's really easy to overlook its successes and strengths if not complete attention is given to it while watching it.

Jeez. A story revolving around a villain isn't new, Villainous and Invader Zim being examples as well as the Darth Vader comics, but this movie is something else. I don't think anyone has ever touched upon the villain winning then going through an existential crisis type thing before. I couldn't find a full copy of it online but the clips I've seen are pretty good. When I first saw the trailer I thought it would be really stupid but after looking at the brief glimpses I've seen I thought it was interesting.

A villain actually defeats his heroic nemesis, and achieves his goal of conquering the city. The villain then loses his will to be evil because he begins to feel that his life just has no purpose or meaning without someone to thwart him. He tries to create a new hero so that he may feel he has purpose again, and it backfires because said hero turns out to be a villain, so now the old villain must become an unlikely hero to stop him.

I was really surprised at how good this movie is, I mean it's not groundbreaking, but it has some little very funny moments and quite interesting characters, the point is that the trailer made it seem very stupid, it mostly showed lame jokes and made it look like it was just the story of a villain finding love in his heart and therefore becoming good for no reason, and with an uninspired sidekick that's there just to be the cute mascot of the series, without anything relevant to actually say or do. Much of the same feeling the trailer for Despicable Me gave me, the difference is that Despicable Me actually is that way.
Only problem I have with this movie is that the characters are actually kind of uninspired. I know they're ganeric heroes and villains, and Superman is the most generic of Superheroes, but come on! They're almost the actual Superman and Lex Luthor! The city is even called Metrocity!

Megamind loves the spectacle of his work but realizes its shallow and unrewarding. Metroman loves being loved but has grown tired of being typecast. Roxanne loves being a reporter but has been "Lois Laned:" becoming cynical and nonplussed by the concept of superheroes and villains. After Metroman "dies" she rediscovers her passion for journalism, and her general love for Metroman the flawless icon becomes a personal love for Megamind's flawed-but-trying philosophy.

That's just looking at the surface of the movie! You are completely missing the part about the nature of a character and how what they're expected to do influences their actions! Megamind isn't a bad person, but from a young age he's told that's what he is and so he does bad things to live up to everyone's expectations. In case you didn't notice, no one is even physically hurt Megamind's schemes. The only time people are in danger is when Tighten starts destroying the city. Without power Hal is harmless, with it he is free to do what before he was physically incapable of. Unlike Megamind who is harmless either way. Metroman has the power but doesn't want it. It's a character driven story, not a comedy. Not that there weren't funny moments. It's chocked full of them! But its still not a comedy. If you wanted a comedy, go watch "Despicable Me".

  • @Theweirdtophat
    @Theweirdtophat 7 років тому +2

Well, Roxanne doesn't have powers and Titan was romantically in love with her. Of course she's going to be a damsel in distress? How could she be the hero? She's not super smart or even has powers, unless she somehow gets it in the film and that would change everything. I don't think it's that dramatic or serious, I actually thought it was pretty damn funny and there was some silliness in it, even when they fought.

i dont really considder the incredibles a parody of superhero movies ,rather just another superhero movie.
this is arguably a better movie from a the pont of view of a parody.
what makes this work is that its self aware of the tired cliches its exploiting and the steriotypes that make up the cast.
    the "unfulfilled villan"
the self-aware damsel (which id like to point out that i think might be something of a "stand in" for the audiance that is also watching all the nonsens)
the hero that just just gives up
the "nice guy" with insecurites driven mad with power.
    and the goofy sidekick

  • @jeremiahnoar7504
    @jeremiahnoar7504 5 років тому

To me, the movie was a commentary of the famous philosophical debate of Nature vs. Nurture. It was a question of weather or not mega mind was born to be bad, or weather it was a self-fulfilling proficy because everyone else around him expected him to be bad when he was a kid. Even in the beginning, before his parents sent him away, his father cryptically said "Son, your destine for____________" leaving the question open entirely. Megamind in my opinion was a villain because that's what society wanted out of him, just look how the treated him as a kid. I've never seen a movie do that so effectively before Megamind. It's one of my favorite movies, solely because it asks a question like that.

I loved Megamind himself. He has some great lines and an inability to pronounce certain words properly (which was a little cheap I admit, but I enjoyed it). Minion was a cute character too and he worked well with Megamind. I will say that the schism between those two was an unnecessary and predictable plot point.
