  • Crash bars are essential on big adventure bikes, and the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is no different. I installed the Hepco & Becker tank bars onto the Big Banana.

I had been researching for some time and couldn't decide which one I wanted. Your unboxing and install video made me choose the H&B. By far the best option, haven't tested them yet, but give it time. Keep up the good videos. 👍

I had Hepco & Becker crash bars on my DL650A 2nd gen, they were awesome! Did a lot of offroad and dropped the bike quite a few times and they never moved. On that model version, it had a horizontal cross brace between the two sides at the bottom which was nice. Couldn't fault them. Everyone else were running the stock Suzuki (made by GIVI) bars and they would bend all the time. Great review, cheers mate.

Hey Curtis, I do remember the install especially on the LHS, I think that wiring connector was more of a Suzuki issue than HB crash bars to be fair. Perhaps to a novice, it might present a challenge.
I for one know you’ve done your absolute level best (ie: ripping crazy) to kill the Strom but it’s held up well, still looks great from a distance & besides being a bit porky, you a one crazy dude😎 Have you chosen another set of off-road tyres & have the folks from Barkbusters helped you with handguards???? C’mon Barkbusters. Get on this guy🇦🇺
    Cheers!

The crash bars I had on my Gen 2 KLR were the bad kind that you described. The Hepcos look great on the Strom.

Thanks for the review. I was looking at the OEM crash bars included on the 800DE Adventure and they do not compare to the Hepco ones. Cheers!

Using the SW-Motech crash bars and skidplate on my 800DE. The brand seems to uphold my expectations. Decent quality and feels reliable.
Had the same issue with the left side of the bike. That rubbery thing is in the middle of where the 2nd screw needs to be fitted in.

    Good info! Nice bars!
Being curious about body part prices, I looked up the cost of the big main side cover behind the crash bars for the 800DE. Pleased to see Revzilla has the part in the U.S. for $97.50 with decals... Not bad. Other parts weren't too bad either.
The Transalp. The similar side cover from the dealer near me is $360 for one side with decals. Ridiculous! Might be able to get the part a little cheaper when places like Revzilla have it, but it will probably still be over $300.
I mistakenly said the price was $50 on another UA-cam video... I have to find that and correct it. 😁
I made my own crash bars for the DE. I enjoy fabricating my own stuff. I am picky and it does look good now but that was not easy to get it all symmetrical!! I went through more than 40' of 1" tubing before I got it right. Probably a piece of cake for someone who does it for a living.
Made my own windshield also. That was pretty easy and it works and looks good. Just some sheet metal a little bigger than you want the windshield to be to use as a curved form, some Lexan, soft felt for between the sheet metal and the Lexan, and an oven. There's probably a UA-cam video?
$30 for a 4'X2' sheet of Lexan .090" thick. Tried a few different shapes and sizes with that sheet of Lexan before I got it right. I attached it to the same bracket the original windshield is screwed to with spacers since I couldn't make the recesses.
    Try it!

Thats pretty cheap for decals, good to know. Making a windshield and crash bars, kudos to you bud!

Full disclosure "I owned MAP up to 2019" whatever, I acquired the HB licence in 2006 because IMHO they are the best. Two main reasons, 1. They do really well in design esp cross loading the bars for better rigidity, you mention flex in others brands. HB use high quality steel and design each bike individually to best suit its needs in a get off. 2. Not just a German name. Made in Germany!! Off which their proud (if you want to visit, the factory is in Pirmasens SW Germany). OH 2.5 They listen to their importers and accept tested feedback to improve the product. Nuff said.

Adventure Bikes need no Crash Bars. Streetbikes used for Off-road Adventure riding need that.
