$300 eBay Coilovers vs. $2500 Coilovers - Is it worth it?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 вер 2024
- Are $2500 coilovers worth the money or can a $300 set get the job done? The HiLow boys (James Pumphrey, Zach Jobe, Aaron Parker and Nolan Sykes) set out to answer the tough questions about upgrading suspension.
We bought two identical Nissan 350z's and have been modifying them to be FUN daily drivers that you can take to the track. James Pumphrey and Zach Jobe's 350z gets the expensive parts, while Nolan Sykes and Aaron Parker's gets the cheap ones. Then we test them to see which components are actually worth spending the money on.
Hi Team got a set of fully adjustable KW Suspension V3s and Low Team spent $300 on a set of eBay coilovers… well they don’t actually even have a name.
So is it worth it? And which ones would you buy?

Dominic Talcott what car
Lo Team missed one major factor; lo team should at minimum be a parts upgrade to stock; no name coil over for $300..... they went ricer mode with the welded diff; they could of cut the coil, they have things that compress the coil as well
@@kunimiy212 Rice stands for racing inspired cosmetic enhancements. Welding the diff is not rice, its a performance enhancement that makes power delivery more consistent and allows cars to drift, and its really common. Cutting the springs isnt considered rice either because it just lowers the car and makes it handle better.
Mister Dinner cutting the springs is definitely ricer.
THIS is what car channels should be doing with their money.

Should’ve tested times before the coil over swaps
@Zeksteve It's expected. People think stock suspension is garbage but in reality its much better than most coilover systems. You need hours and track testing and adjustment to actually match stock suspension. Moral of story? Upgrade the tires and wheel setup before even touching ur suspension bolts folks.
@@TheJackster25 I agree.I am novice to all this so, all I know is what I've seen on youtube and what people have told me trackside. So far everything I've seen about coilovers seems to emphasize the fact that they are adjustable for different tracks and track conditions.
I hope someone can point me to a video about how to decide how to adjust them. What factors do you need to consider ? What do you look for on track that helps you decide how to adjust them. And is it easy to adjust coilovers during a track day? Another thing they didn't do or talk about was whether or not they needed to do an alignment after the coilovers were installed.
LafcadioTheLion and engine too
Blue 04 MX 5 before adjusting the suspension set up, you first need to have proper tires, tire pressure, good ride height, alignment and corner balance.
KW for instance, they provide you a recommended setting. It’s usually a good starting point. To test if the set up is right for the track you are driving, you need to pay attention to the car behaviour during corner entry, mid corner, corner exit. If you get entry understeer/oversteer, then you need to adjust from compression and rear rebound (1 at a time), if you get exit understeer/oversteer, you need to adjust front rebound and rear compression (1 at a time too). In mid corner, it is then related to spring stiffness & anti-roll bar.
Blue 04 MX 5 everything is related to vehicle dynamics basically. And there are bunch of stuff to learn. For example, lowering a car can lower your center of gravity, but your roll center also drops at the same time. And it drops more than COG. That actually increase the distance between COG and roll center, which results more roll. Body roll is not a bad thing and does not affect load transfer, but it is bad for your alignment and aero drag.

I love this series. Especially watching you living the dream of just bolting stuff onto cars and getting along with it. Here in Germany you‘d have a lot of problems with those eBay parts. For every modification you need to have the “TÜV” acknowledge and certify it with that very car. It’s expensive and without proper papers going with the parts you put in, which have to be specific to that very model of car, you won’t be able to get it certified and therefore couldn’t put it into your car (without losing insurance and basically be driving an “illegal” car). It’s so nice to see you guys just having that freedom of modification ✨
It's hard for me to see a lift as a "basic tool."
Hopefully your car came with a jack, which works just as well...
@@aaronjones356 Oh you say so, but having changed out a CV axle with a jack vs a lift, I can tell you, a lift SURE makes it easier. I noticed, since they had one available, they used that rather than the jack. And I bet if you're really honest, maneuvering a strut as tall as some of these are beneath the space you get with a jack would be pretty difficult and occasionally impossible.
@@justaguy6100 I changed out the shocks on a taurus on jack stands, chill out. You don't need a lift, they're just ideal.
@@brandoncheek2597 First I have no need to chill, in one of my prior comments I note changing out a CV axle with a jack. I realize it's possible but saying it's easy when your demonstration doesn't show it well.. it does require some clearance that isn't always easy to get with just a jack and stands. I CERTAINLY would have preferred a lift for that job. But ya use what ya got ;-) For me it would definitely be a factor, though when considering swapping out something that's a tad optional rather than necessary. JS

FINALLY!!! As a non facebook person i've waited so long for this
I’d think a set of Eibach lowering springs with the stock suspension (dampers, etc...) would cost $300~ and be the BEST option of the two (price to performance).
Facts I got a pair of ebay lowering springs and eibach on two identical integras, I don't drive the one with the ebay lowering springs much
350s are more than a decade old. New stock coilovers is probably a night and day difference.
@@BillyJoe1305 I think I'd still prefer lowering springs over coilovers, I just purchased an audi with coilovers (ecs) my mechanic says they are high end not the cheap ones, they ride nice but it makes a clanking noise when you turn the wheel, I was told that's normal but I understand the reason especially with different rim choices

Toyotas just don't seem to stop no matter how much you drive them, as long as you're driving them to begin with. I let that car sit for 3 weeks once and it felt like it aged more in those 3 weeks than the 3 years I'd owned it. Was a 2007 and I was able to sell it for a decent sum and that sumbitch is still on the road. No one looking for used cars in that price range right now is that concerned about things like that as long as the car isn't gonna break down
Coilovers that cheap would actually do worse than stock for sure. They should have bought a new oem set as I bet that would probably be the wisest choice
I agree. OEM or Mid to Upper end. Especially is your cars a BMW M2 or something. My car has aluminum hat discs etc. Used for heat dissipation anything aftermarket will be solid steel. As a BMW guy I prefer ceramic pads. BMWs are a break dust magnet. The car was engineered that way. The stock BMW pads will bite better than a Ceramic retrofit.
Depending on the car and what your trying to do usually stock is the best option.
At 2,500 for coil overs just start saving for a Lamborghini or something more performance oriented than a 350Z. Lol

😂"When you are no longer the Drift King and you have to move to the US and become a male nurse"
Looking at the size i was sure they got the green set for a Micra.
Great video, I really enjoyed the level of effort given to keep the cars evenly matched. I feel though the testing might have been a bit flawed. The true value of great suspension is its ability to keep the tire planted on the ground for consistent traction while cornering or accelerating. While the slalom course was a great choice for the testing, a slalom course with much wider longer corners with areas of uneven road would really allow the value of adjustable rebound and compression to really shine. Imagine, during a long high speed corner you encounter a bump. The suspensions ability to react to and get the tire back on the ground quickly while not upsetting the balance of the car makes the difference between losing a few inches off your line and meeting the outside wall. Round 2 please.
I would get the EBay coilovers because I have a green 1975 Ford Pinto, so they would match the car.

@@mantis_toboggan_md That bugged me for ages.
I'm coming back to watch these again since I just picked up an 06 350z and it needs a lot of work.
It’s a cool test but there’s some issues with the experiment itself.
1. Suspension fine tuning, alignment, and corner balancing wasn’t utilized. New Coilovers means the alignment on the car isn’t balanced anymore. A proper alignment and fine tuning will make the car handle on a dime.
2. The test was pathetic to say the least. They did a moose test and concluded that it determines how well the suspension handles . The KWs weren’t pushed to the limit. The test would have been better if ran on a race circuit or a canyon road.
3. The heat in the tires over time plays a role on grip.
They did however get the conclusion right, expensive Coilovers are beneficial and worth the money for people who care about how well their car handles. If you’re looking to just lower your car and cruise around, the expensive Coilovers aren’t necessary
I was thinking pretty much the same thing. The test wasn't done very well.

Coilovers make negligible differences in terms of speed from A to B, but they are critical when shaving time off a track and safety when you have a project car that's capable of pushing big numbers around that chicane. When you need that customization a high quality set like KW's or in my case D2's, is a must.
"There were a lot of people working on the car and everyone thought someone else did it." is a great excuse until it's the lug nuts you're referring to.
It would've been more helpful or insightful if they tested a name brand strut.
So it would've been a matter of convenient name-brand strut vs. Performance struts.
Obviously anything from Ebay like that, without a brand, isn't worth buying in the first place.

@@manz7860 at that point he would've been better off with $250 lowering springs. They ended up ditching these anyways for megan racing coilovers

FYI, Anyone buying the cheap coilovers may consider upgrading the rear springs with a $200 12k rate option spring from BC or Megan (also Eibach makes a pair to order for reasonable money and allows you to keep the lower rate but have a longer spring). All options allow a normal ride, which is worth a lot of improvement to the ride and performance. $2,500 and can’t even adjust height 😂
You can you just gotta also adjust preload. Because you know some dumbass rich boy would drop it to the dirt, blow a strut, and try to sue kw for his money back.
The video is wrong about this. Adjusting the spring perches not only allows you to adjust the ride height, but it's the correct way to do it. Changing the total length of the coil-over versus OEM can also be used to change the ride height, but this also makes the suspension geometry incorrect which causes a host of problems.
Companies that make 3 piece coil-overs often claim that this is somehow the better way to adjust ride height, but that's a dishonest claim. The real reason for the 3 piece construction and its adjustable length is to allow the same damper cartridge to be re-used in a variety of cars for cost savings. It also implies that the company will have done little to no testing of the actual car with their coil-over. Whereas a coil-over which has actually been built specifically to the correct size for the application such as the KW in this example will have necessarily been tested on that car (which the video does mention).
That the green coil-overs haven't included a required nut further suggests that the company that made them likely has never even looked at the suspension of a 350Z in person, much less tested their product in one. And you can find this sort of thing even in some expensive well known coil-over brands. 3 piece design is not a good sign that you have a coil-over which is actually designed for and tested on your application.
@@SargonDragon you are wrong. adjusting spring preload only make the coilover seem shorter when you compress the springs, but once you put the car on the ground, you will realise the height of the car is not any lower.
You are all wrong, I left my cat in the microwave
@@SargonDragon so what if my wheel and tire size is different than what KW designed their coilovers with? changing preload in unison with ride height is incorrect, that is not an efficient coilover suspension setup. i should be able to have a preset preload that doesnt change or need to be changed, and i should be able to change my ride height to accommodate track conditions and or a change in wheel and tire size, among other things, at the same time.
This deserves to be on netflix
Experienced mechanic saying: it's EASY - piece of cake!
"just unscrew here, and here, over there, and adjust here, move over here, right here, and right there, here remove the screw over there, right here, just unscrew here, and here, over there, and adjust here, move over here, right here, and right there, here remove the screw over there, right here, and here, over there, and adjust here, move over here, right here, and right there, here remove the screw over there, right here..."
Protip: After changing the suspension best to do a wheel alignment for best results.
I would say you need to.
You should get a third 350 and keep it stock. Then run lap times to see how these upgrades compare. That way there’s a control group in these tests. Kind of like what Top Gear did with the Renault Avantime.
Happy first anniversary hi-low

Hopefully AFTER wheels and tires?
Because ride/handling impact per dollar spent, a new set of shoes is the best you can ask for
Ryukachoo and an alignment
