    Lovely video! Just to be safe I'm mentioning (didn't notice if it was said in this clip) that UV resin is not food-safe and should never be used to hold anything edible. And yes, use a mask with proper ventilation, as already advised in the video. ❤

      Thank you for adding this, I mention many times in other videos that air dry clay is not food safe, I guess not mentioned in this video as the paint palette is not food related 🙈😂 but thank you something we need to keep remembering and mentioning as people want I know how to make air dry clay useable for drinking/eating all the time, but the answer is that’s just not food safe and as you say neither is UV resin. Happy crafting 😊❤️🎨

    I have 2 questions that are completely unrelated to your video. You seem to know a lot about air drying clay, and I'm just getting started. I am working on a project and I am stuck until I can find the answer to my questions. I'm working on a project, using a set of cutters from Patchwork Cutters. Their cutters are very thin, but I have made my clay figures thicker, about 1/4 inch thick. The cutters are from a pirate set, so I have a ship, a treasure chest, 2 different pirates, some trees, and I might make a bush. I want to make a plaque that could either have magnets put on the back of it or be hung on a wall. I was in a local craft store here in the USA and came across some wood frames covered with white canvas being sold for use with watercolor or acrylic paints. One of the canvases is the perfect size for my project. I would like to roll out some air dry clay in blue (for the sky and water) and in yellow/brown (for the beach/sand). I would cover the entire face of the canvas with that rolled out clay and then glue all the figures onto that clay. (The clay would not go past the edges and down the sides...it would just cover the "painting" surface area. The canvas, as I mentioned, is a white color, and I think it has been treated with a titanium something and whatever they put on canvas to prepare it for paints. My questions are: 1. Are you able to tell me if the Hearty Clay would stick to this particular type of canvas if I glued it on? And if so, 2. What glue should I use? There are so many kinds in the stores that it is very confusing. I don't want to use anything that would create a lump or line under the clay, obviously (and the clay will be rolled out pretty thinly), but I would need something that would hold the clay onto the "treated" canvas. Might you know the answer to my 2 questions, please? Thank you in advance!

    • @RedRockingBird
      @RedRockingBird  2 місяці тому +5

      Hi Cheryl, thank you for you message, if your brand of clay is similar to DAS then when putting a thin layer across a canvas like this there is a very good chance it will shrink a little or crack. I personally would use something else to cover the canvas or give the canvas some texture with acrylic paint and just paint the canvas the colour I wanted it. If you are determined to cover with clay I would cut the clay the size you wanted it without glueing it, then dry very slowly, turn it over now and again and keep flattening it back down, once dry I would then glue this to the canvas, if not too heavy a white craft glue (pva) should work but as you are going to be adding more pieces and more weight to this then I would use a super glue, the gorilla glues are good, and any should work fine.
      I get asked about added air dry clay to canvas a lot so you have reminded me that I really must make a video on this. Best of luck and let me know how you get on 🎨❤️

      @@RedRockingBirdThank you so much for your reply! I will roll the clay out larger than the canvas and let it dry completely before gluing it on. Then I will cut it to fit! I’ll let you know how it turns out! And I think that you doing a video about this is a fantastic idea! I will watch it.

    Oh, how sweet! The ping-pong ball one is for perfectionists! Love it! But there's a time to embrace organic too. I do like water droplet shapes. I like the fox, the one with the white swan and the 3-wells one with the 3 botanicals painted between. They're all beautiful though. Thanks for sharing US links to the resin tool and supplies. Last year I decided to play with polymer clay- I wanted a specific size and design for both my western watercolors and my traditional Chinese paint chips. With the bit of clay I had left; I made a “limited palettes pallet”= 3 oval indentations then a larger square indentation for mixing.
    After baking and cooling; I coated it with poly-crylic . Over a year of quite a bit of use and it’s holding up. My one issue..I didn’t smooth some of the larger indentations and I keep getting pigment stuck in the crevices.

Have to reallty know how to use one though so as not to ruin the project that was created. I have started drying my clay projects on a cookie rack, they seem to dry faster having air all around them.

      Thank you kindly ❤ Drying on cookie racks is a great idea if it isn't too hot, as don't want them to curl at the edges, but yes that's super ❤ Don't look too closely at my nails, I do love it when i have lovely painted nails but it's not too often these days with all the paint, clay varnish etc ❤ Have a wonderful weekend

    Lovely ideas, as always! I will try to make myself some painting palettes soon. 😊
    I really struggle with the varnish/resin part. I ruined a few pieces at this stage. If I use a shiny varnish I feel like the strokes of the brush are evident on the surface, even when applying thin layers. I use the triple thick one.
    About the resin, when it works it looks amazing but I always worry about ruining my pieces, specially if it has an irregular surface. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong of if I just need more practice!

    • @RedRockingBird
      @RedRockingBird  3 місяці тому

      Thank you. I really do know what you mean, varnishes that are easy to use tend to either give brush strokes or are not as robust, so it is a bit of practice really, but in all honesty I try not to worry about things going wrong, as there is normally a way to fix things and at least we learn in the process and can do things differently next time, with irregular surfaces these just take longer as you have to do a bit at a time. Air dry clay is for fun crafts really, so perfection is not always needed depending on how you feel about that. But practice and experience really help

    • @RedRockingBird
      @RedRockingBird  Місяць тому

      Thanks, I tend to use a fine paint brush with acrylic paint, you can use permanent fine markers but I find that coating in mod podge first before varnish works as some varnishes reactivate the markers, always do a test piece with what you use first, enjoy 😊
