Right Turns - Making Right Turns for New Drivers: Turn Speed, Lane Position, Steering Control & More

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Hey there, fellow road warriors! It's your good old reliable driving instructor Micah here, and today we're tackling the most exciting turn of them all - the right turn!
Now, I know what you're thinking - "But Micah, isn't the left turn the most exciting one?" Sure, it's fun to dodge oncoming traffic and make that wider turn, but the right turn is where the real challenge lies. You've got to avoid clipping the curb and parked cars while making a much sharper turn. But don't worry, I've got your back.
First things first, before you even think about turning, you need to assess the situation. What's the traffic like? Are there any pedestrians or bicycles around? Is it a four-way stop or a one-way street? You gotta know what you're dealing with before you make your move.
Once you've assessed the situation, it's time to prepare for the right turn. Gradually slow down and put on that turn signal, but don't get too close to the curb just yet - you gotta check that blind spot first. And here's a pro tip: when making a right turn, always move towards the right curb after signaling. It's like dancing with your car, but instead of a partner, you've got the curb... it's actually nothing like that... just making sure you're listening.
Now, let's take a look at some different scenarios.
If you're at an all-way stop, remember that it's "first come, first serve." Make sure to check your blind spots and the crosswalk before turning.
For two-way stops, where cross-traffic doesn't stop, you stop first and then inch out into the intersection and angle that steering wheel to the right. You're like a driving ninja, smoothly guiding your car through the turn while checking for any incoming danger.
And when no stopping is required, if you're feeling particularly daring, you can make a rolling right turn! But don't get too cocky - make sure to slow down before the turn and keep a close eye on your surroundings.
At the end of the day, it's all about visualizing where you want to end up and confidently steering your way to victory. So buckle up, my fellow road warriors, and let's conquer those right turns!

From New York, I passed my road test today thanks to watching your videos.
CONGRATS to you on passing!! Thanks for the support, and drive safely out there!
This is the best driving video I've seen for turning. I'm a new driver struggling with turning, although I'm much better than when I first started. If only my instructor had told me all of this. I especially like the blueprint for making the right rolling turn. This is a fantastic video. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the kind words, glad we could help!!
good stuff .better then my driving trainer . Its hard to get driving licence in nyc .wish me luck
Hello in NYC! Best of luck to you!
I did a right turn and took the whole side walk 🫣 I'm so ashamed, so now im here
Welcome! Thanks for sharing and looking forward to helping keep those sidewalks safe :)

Yeah I am frustrated just after my 2 days class. So I am here to get more tips 😢
I passed my road test last Feb. 14, 2024!!!I Learned a lot from your videos! 😊
From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your videos really helped me a lot!
Pls dont stop making helpful videos like this. God bless your hearts! Again, thank you so much
Hello again! So wonderful to hear! CONGRATS to you and thanks so much!!!
Congrats buddy
Thank you for this video because I learn something deferent😊
I'm so glad! Thanks for sharing!
This video is so helpful !!!!
Thank you!!
Wonderful sir. Could you please make the video of the vehicle having steering on right side of the vehicle.
Hello! I am so sorry, all of our driving here in California is done from the left-hand-side of the vehicle. Best of luck to you!
check out Conquer Driving here on youtube, he's in the UK and steers from the right side of the vehicle.
Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
I wish all driving instructor talked like this and with more details like you do. I mean we are new beginners on driving..🥲
I appreciate that! Best of luck to you!
I usually allow the steering wheel to get back straight on it's own, while holding it slightly. Is that wrong for the driving test 🤔
Hello! That is completely fine as long as you maintain contact with the wheel as it "slides" back into position as you complete your turn... you described it perfectly, "holding it slightly". Your hands need to be in ready position to take full control of the wheel in case of an emergency situation.
Hope that helps!
@@DriversEdDirect Yes it helps. Thanks
What does "SMOG" mean? I've heard you use that term several times.
Hello, S.M.O.G. is an acronym we use to make sure we do all the steps needed before making a lane change or a turn:
Signal
Mirror
Over the Shoulder
Go

Hey one more question and im set when going straight through a traffic light intersection on green light would the correct way to traffic check that is look left, right then straight ahead procced if clear i know to do left right left for turns specifically but going straight i need verification if im right.
Hello! Yes, left-right-left before every intersection, even when headed straight. You've got it!
@@DriversEdDirect okay I know this is gonna sound kinda silly but when going straight thank you for telling me to look left right left but am I allowed to tilt my head a little bit when looking left right left I know it's kinda natural you're head automatically follows you're eyes but I've have people to only use my eyes which confuses me because that only puts strain on my eyes tryna hold my head straight to do that would it be okay if I tilt chin a little I know they're only just glances but please help
Thanks
Welcome!
Thank you so much..very helpful!😊

I am a new student now practicing to get my license can someone tell what can help
Hello and best of luck to you! Definitely read the DMV Handbook several times and hire a driving instructor if you are able to. If you don't have access to an instructor, try to practice (assuming you have a driving permit of course) with a patient and knowledgeable adult driver who can guide you. Watching videos can help too, but ultimately getting behind the wheel is what will grow your skill. Start off in an empty parking lot to learn the basics before heading out onto neighborhood streets. Once you have mastered the neighborhoods, then you can start practicing on busier city streets. Again, always have an adult licensed driver in the passenger seat next to you.
Hope that helps!
@@DriversEdDirect thank you 🙏🏻
At 3:55 I did the exact move for my driving test so I can see the road and he failed me for that I’m confused
Hello again, re-posting this here in case you missed our previous response, thanks:
Hello!! Thanks for sharing and so sorry to hear that you failed. Without seeing the situation first hand, it is hard to speculate what the examiner didn't like about your stop before the right turn. The most common things they may have been checking for in this situation might be:
- Did you come to a full complete stop behind the limit line before you rolled forward to get a better view? The examiner needs to feel your car completely stop (wheels lock)... about 2-3 seconds of actually being fully stopped is appropriate.
- When you stopped before the limit line, did you do full traffic checks of the sidewalk and road by looking left-right-left and over your right shoulder (blind spot check to the right because you will be turning right)? If you did a full stop but did not do all of your traffic checks before rolling forward, that could also be an auto-fail.
Hope that helps! Best of luck to you on your next test and thank you for watching!!
The best description of right turns. I learn better from you than my instructor. THANK YOU
Glad to help, thank you for the support!!
Your video teaching is far better than driving school teacher Lubbock.
Wow, thanks so much!
I have a couple of friends who prefer to let the steering slide back in their hands to its straight position when completing a turn. Whereas other people prefer to manually turn the steering wheel back. As for myself, I prefer to do it manually like you and the rest of the people who are like us.
Thank you for sharing! And thanks for keeping both hands on the wheel too!!
What happens if I inch forward and a pedestrian appear on my right wanting to cross the road , because I would have blocked the cross walk
Hello! Great question! If this happens during your drive test, it could be an automatic fail because you impeded the pedestrian's right-of-way. This is why it's important to scan the sidewalks for pedestrians before checking for traffic. We also recommend not making a right turn on a red light during your test to avoid this situation. If you do find yourself blocking a pedestrian in the crosswalk, stop immediately and give them the right-of-way. Don't panic or try to reverse; just stay calm and make sure the pedestrian is safe before proceeding. Hope that helps!
@@DriversEdDirect thank you so much for your response. I’m grateful. I’m still doing my driving practice and your videos are very helpful

Thank you for an overall great video. I’m sorry if I missed it, but allowing arms to cross when making tight turns goes against everything I’ve ever learned. If the air bag blows, it will break your arms on your face and might kill you. Shouldn’t a hand shuffle be used instead? What is the official guidance on this? Can you point to it in any official documentation guidance?
Hello! Thank you for your thoughtful comment and for the kind words about our video! We’re glad you found it helpful and appreciate you highlighting an important safety consideration. At Drivers Ed Direct, we prioritize both safety and control in our teaching methods.
Push-pull steering is indeed safer in the rare event of airbag deployment during a turn, as it keeps the driver’s arms out of the airbag’s path. However, the primary goal of steering is always to maintain the best possible control of the vehicle, especially in emergency situations.
Hand-over-hand steering allows for faster and more precise steering inputs, which can be critical for quick maneuvers to avoid a collision or navigate unexpected obstacles. This method provides greater leverage, enabling quicker and more effective responses. Both the California DMV and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recognize hand-over-hand steering as effective for tight turns and skid recovery, highlighting its value in scenarios that require immediate and sharp steering adjustments.
If you only learn the shuffle method (push-pull steering), you may not feel comfortable or confident when an emergency arises and rapid steering is required. While push-pull steering is a valuable technique, especially where airbag safety is a concern, hand-over-hand steering remains highly effective for both routine driving and emergency maneuvers. The key is to use the technique that best suits the situation. We encourage all drivers to become comfortable with both methods to ensure they can adapt to whatever the road presents.
Thank you again for your comment, and we’re happy to have your support as we work to make driving safer for everyone.
@@DriversEdDirect Thank you very much for your detailed response!

Thanks for watching!
When doing right turns, do I always have to turn into the right-most hand lane? How do I know if it is a driving lane or not? Am I allowed to turn right into parking lanes and bus lanes? My road test is tomorrow and that is the only thing I am nervous about.
Great question! You want to turn into the rightmost lane that is a driving lane... so you would not turn into a bike lane, bus lane, or parking lane. If you do accidentally turn into a parking lane, don't panic. Just make sure you make a proper lane change into the driving lane (don't just swerve over). Also, keep in mind that if you don't turn into the rightmost lane, it is NOT an auto fail, it is just one point off. If you accidentally turn into the middle lane, for example, just stay in that lane and don't panic - do not swerve back into the rightmost lane - that would actually be a potential auto-fail.
Hope that helps!
Just passed my test today and I can’t thank you enough for these videos. You’re doing a great job 👍.

Can we stop beyond the stop line to look at the blindspot if no pedestrians are present? After you move from stop line whats the speed limit to clear the blindspot?
Hello! I am not 100% sure what you are asking, but after you stop at a stop sign but need to roll forward a bit more to get a better view of traffic, you just "inch out" or "roll forward" at a very slow pace. The slower you go, the better! Your speedometer might only hit 1 or 2 mph. Hope that helps!
@@DriversEdDirect I got your point and when you roll forward at 1,2 mile speed if you dont see any vehicles do you need to make 2 nd stop or can you go by increasing speed?
@@nazmashaik390 Hello, it depends on the situation. If you can see clearly after rolling forward and everything looks safe, then you can just make your turn without stopping again. Of course, if you see a car or pedestrian coming after you roll forward and it is not safe to go, then you would stop again and wait until everything is clear for you to go. Hope that helps!
Thanks

Thank you ❤ absolutely amazing driving instructor, I learned a lot
Happy to help! Thank you!
I prefer the push pull method
If there are pedestrians on yields if the signal green can I take right turn without stop or do I have to yield for pedestrians if the signal is green
Hello, always yield to pedestrians even when you have a green light. If a pedestrian is in the crosswalk coming towards you, you should let them reach the sidewalk before turning. If the pedestrian is walking away from you, let them get at least halfway across the street before making your turn. Hope that helps!
I’m confused. I was told that I had to let the wheel slide back on its own in my hands for the road test, is this true?
Hello! Yes, you can definitely let the wheel slide back through your hands as long as you keep contact with the wheel at all times. This is a technique we teach after students have mastered the other counter-steering techniques, demonstrating they can fully control the wheel properly.
Thanks for watching!
what is the best thing to do if you must stop near the curb before turning but there is a fast approaching car from behind?
Hello! Great question. This is why it is important to always be aware of your surroundings. If you notice fast moving vehicles behind you, then make sure you slow yourself down more gradually - this will force the cars behind you to begin to brake sooner. Also, if you leave "escape routes" in front of and around your vehicle, you'll be able to maneuver or move out of the way when dangerous situations arise. Hope that helps!
The the most helpful video I have never seen. I am 😅 struggling with turns and I scare
Thanks for watching, best of luck to you!
one thing I don't understand is what are you supposed to do if there are dangerous vehicles behind you? Not slow down? Just barrel through the intersection and hope for the best?? If I'm driving safely but they're driving way too fast and close to me what can I really do about it to stop them from rear ending me?
Hello and great question, you are thinking like a true defensive driver! Because you can't control the actions of other drivers, you have to do your best to set yourself up for success. For example, if you know you need to slow down soon but notice someone coming too fast behind you, start slowing down sooner than normal and slow down more gradually so that the driver behind you will be forced to also start slowing sooner and have more time to react to you. Also, there will be times where you are thinking about turning, but you notice the fast car charging from behind, so you might change your mind and decide not to make the turn at that intersection and wait for a safer situation further down the road to turn right. Also, create space cushions all around your vehicle so that in the event of a tailgater approaching quickly and about to hit you, you have some wiggle room to pull forward a bit or even move into another lane safely. Hope that helps!
@@DriversEdDirect thank you so much! This is really great advice!
How do you the right turns in California with a bike lane?
Hello! Thanks for reaching out. In short, the answer is you can always enter a bike lane for up to 200 feet before making a right turn, regardless of the road marking (broken or solid). In fact, you must enter the bike lane when making a right if there is one next to you. You must always signal, check your mirrors, and look over your shoulder (checking your blind spot) before entering the bike lane as it is technically a lane change. The acronym we use for this when teaching students is S.M.O.G. (Signal, Mirror, Over-the-Shoulder, Go).
Here are some of our videos timestamped with discussions specifically on bike lanes:

@DriversEdDirect
Hi there. I was really, really having a hard time with the fear of hitting curbs and making turns on right turns. I applied the strategies you mentioned and it's helping ALOT. I drive more smoothly and with more confidence now. I wanted to say thank you and please keep doing what you all are doing.
the driving instructors I've got right now are constantly telling me to let the wheel slide back into its straight position on my turns and I have so much trouble doing that. None of the videos I've seen here on youtube have instructors that are enforcing that. My brain just doesn't want to let the wheel slide. I have a fear of driving, and anxiety,
so I don't like letting my grip off of the wheel like they keep telling me to let the wheel slide. (my palms are also sweaty during lessons because of my anxiety and I've explained that to them but they don't seem to get it) It's made me not want to go back and get more lessons from them because I constantly feel like I'm doing everything wrong and they won't move me on until I start letting the wheel slide back.
Hello! We address the slide back technique here: 14:13 - but the reason we don't teach that method FIRST is that we feel it is important for our students to learn how to control the steering wheel using hand over hand and the shuffle method. These concepts ensure that our students can skillfully control the wheel, and once that has been demonstrated, we will teach the slide back technique as well. Again, there is nothing wrong with the slide-back technique and it is actually preferred for most turns once you get the hang of it, but there are other methods of counter-steering that provide more control in certain situations.
Anyway, for your specific situation with anxiety and sweaty palms, please hang in there! Trust us, it will get easier over time and will someday become very easy for you to execute. Until then, just know that there will be some patience and practice involved to get there. But you can do it!!
We've got this trust me. I think we are in same situation. I have phobia for driving, if I have a choice, I wouldn't drive at all. But now I am more determined than ever, working on my fear and hoping to have the confidence to go for my test after winter
thank u left turns are much more and i always need to turn the wheel in that lane i wanna go in
Thanks for watching!
Wonderful style to teach Love this
Many thanks!!
if not comfortable , can i wait unitll red light turns green although there is no pedestrians ?
Hello! Yes, you can definitely wait for a green light to make your turn. There is no law that says you have to make a right on red. However, just know there may be situations where drivers behind you become impatient and honk if they feel you are not making your turn when all is safe. Learning how to turn on a red light safely and legally is a good thing - but until you have more confidence, it is OK to wait!
@@DriversEdDirect Thank you so much !

0:55 Some say it is more efficient to pivot the foot between brake and accelerator. I kind of agree with that.

Wait so if im coming up to a stop sign after i smog do i have tk check my rearview agaun thats alot of steps i need to remember
Or does the smog count as the rearview check when stoping at stop signs please help
Hello, you should always check your rear view mirror before you begin to slow down. So when coming to s stop sign, you would check you rear view mirror a few hundred feet before the stop sign, before braking. Hope that helps.
Yes but I'm asking if smog works does that count as rearview check when stopping
Helps that I know smog is part of checking the rearview when slowing down at a stop sign thank you I know going trough a traffic light if it turns yellow to slow down check rearview then stop safest way in my opinion i was gonna ask if going straight through an intersection can I look left right then back ahead to the road ahead of me
@DriversEdDirect does smog count as checking rearview before stopping does the smog count as that or do I have to check rearview again is what in asking
Does using smog before stop sign count as checking rearveiw before braking? Please help
Please help drivers test is soon does smog count as checking the rearview when breaking or no do I have to check the rearview again after checking blindspot
Hello! While the mirror checks during SMOG may count as the rear-view mirror check when braking, the main point to remember is that you always need to check what's behind you before you brake. If that happens during SMOG, then great. But in general, you want to always be aware of what's behind you before you brake. Doing frequent mirror checks while you drive will help you accomplish this because you'll always be more aware of what's behind and around you.
Hope that helps!
Okay thank you I understand in neighbors hoods It's alot shorter time and distance so I may be only able to smog but I'm figuring out a traffic lights after I smog if the light is red I may have to brake and check rearview so maybe check it twice if at a stopped traffic light but only once if im going so slow or on a residential street that sound about right
Is it ok to do a spin back on a driving test
Or the slide back to the middle
Hello! Great question! The main thing you need to do is maintain control of the vehicle at all times. If you let the wheel slide back to the middle position, that is perfectly fine but you must do it smoothly and in a controlled fashion, making sure your fingers (both hands) keep contact with the wheel as it slides back into position - that way you can easily and quickly grab the wheel at a moments notice. Hope that helps!
Thanks 👍
