  • The boys are back in town, and they're having themselves a Disney afternoon. This time around, John and Audi go for some co-op action in Capcom's excellent Magical Quest 3, the Japan-only follow up to their Mickey Mouse platformer series. This game was later released on Game Boy Advance, but as you'll see, this Super Famicom original is among the finest games on the system.

Little bit of Animation "Inside Baseball" for you: That tendency for something's position to be shifted to present to Camera in a certain way is known as "Mickey Mousing" - after the famous mandate for Mickey's ears to always show their emblematic silhouette.

YES!! For decades, I’ve been preaching the gospel of Mickey & Donald 3 to my circle of friends; a truly under the radar gem. I now feel vindicated. (for some unknown reason, a kid in my neighborhood had this Super Famicom cart working on a Super Nintendo, and I remember many afternoons spent trying to beat this game, with zero knowledge of Japanese - the art and music were so good that’s what kept me coming back for more)

If you’re in the USA, then official Super Famicom carts play natively in the US SNES. You just need to remove two plastic tabs inside the cartridge slot that stop SFC carts fitting inside. Without them it plays the carts fine. That kid knew his stuff!

A staple of my childhood. I played this one religiously, mostly as Donald who was my favorite. Actually I played lots of Japanese games I never would have otherwise, and that's thanks to my aunt, who is a "Nisei", and owned a toy store back then, which gave her access to all kinds of imported stuff. Great memories, my God. I loved World of Illusion on the Mega Drive/Genesis as well, and Mickey Mania. Not to mention the NES and Master System games. Disney games were on a roll back then; I don't think something like that will ever happen again.

btw I would really love to see some DF Retro special sometime on retro graphics. How they made the pixel art for games like this, how it worked on the technology at the time etc. We hear a lot about 3D but not so much about 2D game tech. (or maybe there's already such a video and I missed it).

Capcom were really good at hiding tiles and making environments feel organic and expansive with clever background art. Perhaps consider a special on the Disney platformers of this era and include non-Capcom titles like Maui Mallard too. Please :)

YES! This franchise needs more recognition. The 3rd game was never released in the West back in the SNES days, a mistake rectified with the GBA port.
A lot of the stuff we take for granted in modern games, like switching outfits, came from Capcom's efforts in Megaman and Magical Quest.

I suppose it was more of a fashion at the time. On MegaDrive there was for example "Kid Chameleon", that was based fully on cosplay. :)
Its core gameplay idea was a bit of an early version of the more recent, and more unfortunate, "Balan Wonderworld". Also from SEGA.. :(

Gotta love the wonderful pixel art of these games. Donald is by far the more popular character here in the Netherlands. I think most kids grew up with the weekly magazine. I always preferred Donald Duck as well! Idk, he always seemed to have so much personality, as opposed to Mickey who i never knew what really defined him. And ooooh yeah, the weekly magazine! I still vividly remember the trips to the grocery store with my mom - the magazine stand was right next to the cash registers and every week i was hoping my mom would buy the Mickey Mouse Magazine for me - and she mostly if not always did as far as i remember 😄

    • @3dmarth
      @3dmarth 2 роки тому +1

@@dominiktatarka4810 I know what you mean... I'm pretty sure the term "pixel art" just came into popular usage recently, with the rise of indie games.
And old games didn't even look like pixel art until we started emulating them and displaying them on HD LCD screens.
I like the low-res artwork of old games, but don't really care for "pixel art" the way so many people do now.
While there are too many indie games all doing the same thing now (and being praised for it), I have to admit that the pixel art games that I've played have been a lot of fun.

Mickeys Magical Quest was a weird one for me. When I was a kid, it was one of my white whales; I'd seen it in tonnes of magazines, even had a complete walkthrough for it, and desperately wanted to play it, but for some reason I just couldn't find it *anywhere* here in Australia. Then, after years, I managed to find a video store that was renting out an imported french version. It was generally rented out, so I'd keep going back week after week until I FINALLY got it. Raced home to play it, and... it just didn't click with me.
Was my first lesson about how chasing something down can be more exciting than actually getting it!

Whenever you go through a transition where the game fades to black and when it comes back it looks all blurry for a second, does that happen because of the RetroTink 5X and its auto-phase feature? Because it kind of looks terrible when that happens. I'm thinking of getting a RetroTink 5X, but I really hope there's a way to keep the blurriness after transitions from happening.

Mickey currently is super normal and not allowed to be mad or anything but he was allowed to be very expressive in the early cartoon shorts before disney became the monolith.
Also with modern emulation the slowdown can be corrected

Capcom's Disney games were always high quality they just seemed to get overshadowed in the magazines of the time by the Disney games Sega made themselves despite being just as high in quality.

Sorry, but the capcom version of aladdin its not the better version, look at the tests in various magazins. But its a personal taste. I love how the animation was build in the segaversion. Do you know that disney-cartoondrawers make the animations for sega??

Japanese in this game is super easy.
Only kana most the time with exceptions of
Level intro screens which also highlighted with kana.
