I played this back when it first came out. Never heard of Dragon Ball. Years later, when Dragon Ball WAS finally brought stateside on cable TV and I heard the name Goku, I was immediately like "holy crap, it's that game."

Fun Fact:
The French version actually DOES keep the Dragon Ball license (where it's known as Dragon Ball: Le Secret du Dragon), since the show was already being dubbed in France by that point; rather humorously, the developers accidentally left in a debug feature in that version where pressing B on Controller 2 causes the game to skip to the next level.

You'd be surprised how much of TFS's jokes are pulled from really obscure corners of the franchise. They actually come up with very few completely original jokes.
Oh god, Johnny got one hell of an eh game for the next. At least he should be able to beat it super quickly. It's so bear bones. The sequel is literally just a better version of the first game.

Same here, bought it on release day, but felt kinda down when I beat it in less then a day and just played the different modes a bunch of times. At least the sequels had more characters and larger fights. The PS2 Ultimate Ninja games are far more entertaining for Naruto fans, at least in my opinion.
I still have those Naruto GC/Wii games and still are a good time.
I like how quiet he was the moment he got the game. Besides hinting that john is in no way a naruto fan, it'll probably bring people memories of those shitty fights between anime fans, arguing over which franchise or main character was better/stronger.

I think Toriyama also designed the characters for Blue Dragon. Granted, I didn't watch it, and that might not even be the right name for the thing I'm thinking of, but whatever XD

I guess with FighterZ coming out very soon, it only makes sense to take a look at technically the first Dragon Ball game to release in the U.S. to celebrate it! (Also what is it with people and mispronouncing the FighterZ part?)
It seems to be completely intentional for a lot of people. I've talked with people who do it (I'm one of them) simply because the actual name is stupid.
Because as Joe has said, saying it as fighters, but with z sound instead of an s, is something you expect from a show trying to be hip and failing hard or something

Technically Krillin died more times with 3 deaths and Yamcha only 2 deaths. Unless you count Resurrection F when Frieza blow up the planet before Whis's time reversal thing fixed that. So then there even, then again Krillin has 18, and Yamcha lost his only girlfriend to the guy indirectly responsible for his first death.

Well, there are some who mod their systems to have the best quality possible. It looks like emulation when, no, they actually are using a modified original system. But that's true, most do use emulation. But at least when Johnny does it, he usually admits it.

When I first beat this game back in the mid 90s on my NES, I had no clue that it was based on the anime sequel that I watch on tv at the time. Also I play Kid Niki after this one and always thought that this was a prequel to that game.

All I can say about naruto games........PS2 games were way better than the GC ones.

I like the music a lot, actually. Tee Lopes' work is something I am a fan of. Its jazzy, exciting, and unique to me. Kind of sets himself apart from the crowd.
Musically, I could never get into Completionist's intro. Its very much in the background to me.
Johnny's intro doesn't sound like a 70s lot intro to me, though. :P Then again, I'm not into that.

As someone that watches Fate, seeing Yamcha being called Lancer is hilarious.
IIRC the names and stuff were changed because Bandai didn't have the
license for DragonBall in North America, so they reskinned the game as
something else.
This also happened with Bandai's Gegege no Kitaro game as well, which we know as Ninja Kid.
Incidentally they both came out in 1986.

Well, what ya know. I just checked the newest Dragon Ball Super manga chapter and almost immediately Johnny is reviewing essentially Dragon Ball game.
Cory in the House, Megaman Battle Network, Dragon Power, and now Naruto Clash of Ninja. The anime games are abundant in these two marathons.
Kinda strange that Goku’s journey to the west was so rocky at the start.
