Trapping The Perfect Hawk - Ep. 7

  • Our quest continues for the perfect Red-Tailed Hawk. We're most interested in locating a Dark Morph or a Harlan's Hawk which is a subspecies of the Red-Tailed Hawk. Unlike the traditional color pattern of a Red-Tailed Hawk, these birds are much darker in coloration and typically have little to no white in their feathers. These darker birds will migrate down from Canada during the winter months as they search for food and warmer temperatures here in the states.
    We're using a Bal-chatri trap with a bait mouse and gerbil as we're targeting passage red-tailed hawks. Both Michael and Ashley are Master Falconers with years of experience with the proper licensing and permits to trap wild birds. Please do not attempt to do any of these activities without the proper experience, equipment, and legal permissions to do so.

    You did an amazing job with the trapping, and by far it was the best I've seen from anyone for at least a few years! There is one concept I ponder about. At the 20:50 mark, you were saying that most of these Red Tailed Hawks die in their first year from parasites. I've always thought that starvation was the main reason these hawks don't survive, especially in colder climates where food is scarce. I am glad you did what you could to help these hawks greaten their chances of survival! Even though none of these hawks you showed ended up as a Falconry bird, it does seem like they can hunt very well without any difficulty! I couldn't imagine there would be a need to keep any of them!

    • @WildlifeCommandCenter
      @WildlifeCommandCenter  2 роки тому +3

      Valid reasoning, starvation is a factor, but what is a reason for starvation? Lack of catching enough food, lack of calories from food caught? Calories being depleted by parasites? It all plays together, I like to think I did just enough to help at least one of these magnificent birds to survive this coming winter.

    Awesome trapping video. eBird is a great resource for pinning the Harlan’s down. Advanced searches by year/month and rich media (I.e, photos) are super useful. They are incredibly spooky and it’s even noted in the scientific literature. Lots of miles on the truck but we ended up with 3 of them (light, intermediate and dark) by the end of the trip. Saw a bunch of neat-looking adults too and probable intergrades.

    Hello! I've been trying to trap for awhile now and have been struggling quite a bit to get a bird to come to my BC. I've tried a few different designs (I'm trapping in Northern Utah), and nothing seems to be working. I'm using wild mice that I caught as bait!! They are really the only mice that seem to move when I put the trap out. Fancy mice just huddle up because it is so cold. Should I just give up trapping for the season because it is so cold? @Wild

      Hippoboscidae, the louse flies or keds, are obligate parasites of mammals and birds. In this family, the winged species can fly at least reasonably well, though others with vestigial or no wings are flightless and highly apomorphic. As usual in their superfamily Hippoboscoidea, most of the larval development takes place within the mother's body, and pupation occurs almost immediately.[2]

    Did the hawk have mites? That looks like Seven Dust insecticide powder?

    • @WildlifeCommandCenter
      @WildlifeCommandCenter  Місяць тому +1

      Hey @HRTsAFyre,
      Thanks for your sharp observation and question! The powder you noticed in the video isn't actually Seven Dust; it's a specialized treatment we use for bird mites. It’s completely safe for the birds but highly effective in treating these pesky parasites.
      Bird mites are tiny critters that can cause a lot of discomfort for birds, and they're not always visible to the naked eye. They tend to infest the feathers and skin, leading to irritation, scratching, and other health issues if not addressed. It's crucial for us at the Wildlife Command Center to ensure that any bird we care for, especially rescues like this hawk, is not only treated for visible injuries but also checked for these less apparent yet potentially harmful conditions.
      Using the right products and methods to treat these mites ensures that the birds are healthy and comfortable before they are released back into their natural habitats or continue with further rehabilitation. This attention to detail in the care of wildlife is a fundamental aspect of our rescue efforts, ensuring that these magnificent creatures get a second chance at a healthy life in the wild.
      Keep those great questions coming, and thank you for your interest in the welfare of wildlife!
