I just watched a Sanderson lecture where he talks about the same thing. He phrased it as "ideas are cheap". We shouldn't coddle our ideas to the point it that it's hard to just get started and we're fearful of making "bad" art in the process. It starts to hold us back. Kind of like pressing 2 too soon when playing Mario Kart 🤣
My perfectionist, ADHD, shaking-Mario-Kart brain definitely needed to hear this today! It made me cry because I felt so seen. You have an incredible talent for summarizing struggles I haven't had words for, which helps me name them and deal with them, rather than living with nagging, nebulous frustration. Thank you
yes!! wrong choices are NOT final - every single draft is a living working document. We all know that is the point of editing hahaha but sometimes it's just really nice to hear out loud 💜
John Rogers (the creator and show runner of Leverage) does something similar! For any script he writes he first writes "BAD VERSION OF THIS:" at the top of the page because it's less stressful than trying to write something perfect first try. I love writing the bad version of my book before I write the good version of it!
this is probably the best writing video i have watched. You spoke to so many issues and feelings that go largely unspoken by the writing community. Thank you for sharing!
Love this! Great reminder to not get so caught up. I’m just about to hit the midpoint in my first draft and sometimes my brain does think of the cliché thing off the bat and I will sit trying to figure out how to make it better and more unique and there are times I should just write it in and come back later. I’m trying to get better at that and not be such a perfectionist. Excited for the live stream tonight!
Watching this the second time around but this time it's almost 1 AM and I finally wrote out 1000 words for my first book........ AHHHHHHHH thanks for inspiring me Brielle :')
I'm currently on my fourth draft. I printed my third draft and wrote all over it, and now I have to rewrite everything back onto my computer and its a bit off putting haha. I'm trying to figure out how to move forwards, because I truly believe in this project and hope it will become my debut novel! All your videos are so insightful and entertaining to watch, and I'm looking forward to what's to come. Also; CANNOT WAIT for Unraveling's future release
You got this!! Gotta push through those more grueling stages, it’ll be so worth it!! 💖 I’m so glad you enjoy the content and are looking forward to the release, I’m honored 🥹❤️
I’m also writing draft 2 of my book and oh my God, the amount of times I’ve felt frozen in front of the document ‘cause I hated my writing is too high. BUT I’m also trying to learn to not stop when I see bad words and just keep writing, because as you said I can always rewrite it and improve it. This coffee chat was very helpful, it’s good to see that we’re all struggling with the same thing lol. What matters is that we keep writing anyway✨
I totally needed this! i’m so scared of writing a scene that or dialogue that doesn’t fit the story at all, but reminding myself it’s not final is definitely going to be my goal now. Thank you for sharing this! and perfect mario kart analogy 🫣❤
keeping bad words on the page even though i know i will change it later has been the bane of my existence lol. but everything you said was straight facts bestie and i love the mario kart analogy hahah ✨
Yes. The process is a win. Maybe not always ... the battles are very different from the war ... but patience is a virtue. I've had experiences as late as draft 5 where the script does a total tilt-a-whirl and I reread a scene and go "wait, how did that watermelon show up in the minivan's glove compartment? what made this part of the villain's plan? explain yourself, Adam Fishkin". But I persevere, and I work out a version of the car chase without any watermelon and it makes more sense. Looking forward to tonight's stream. 🥰
Hey Brielle! Really like how casual and cosy your vlogs are. Just wondered, when you're working on a project, how many words/hours do you put in every week?
It's so scary to think about having to rewrite stuff if all turns out to not work after all the time spent writing. Or thinking I've been working on the wrong project all this time. I should have been working on another one. It can be crippling sometimes. I really needed to hear this. Thank you for making this video!

I'm a couple days late but - I'm so glad you left that Mario Kart analogy in the video, it makes perfect sense and is super relatable 😆

This is SO important to remember, and so hard to keep in mind when you're actually in the middle of a writing session 😅😂 Thank you for sharing!

Totallyyy! The feelings are inevitable, just have to keep putting words down regardless ✨✨

lol this comment cracked me up. Totally
this video comes at the right time! ❤ I'm so tired of not finishing drafts despite the hundreds of hours i spend writing. 😫
You got this!! Finish the thing!!!!
Hey Brielle! Really like how casual and cosy your vlogs are. Just wondered, when you're working on a project, how many words/hours do you put in every week?
It totally depends. When I was drafting I was doing about 10k words per month

Lol the last one was from like 2020 😅 time for a refresh
You can’t edit a blank page!

You're watching too many UA-cam videos on how to write a novel and not enough time writing one.
