4:26 Getting beta readers helped so much with preparing me for criticism or even rude reviews! I did multiple rounds and there were a couple who definitely didn't connect with the story (which is fine). It's so smart to get betas!
going outside of your comfort zone only leads to growth💕 this is an amazing mental milestone! i’m so glad you had a positive experience with feedback, which speaks volumes about your wisdom to choose only the best critique partners. can’t wait to see more of your WIP!
okay there is actually nothing scarier and more embarrassing than getting feedback 🤣 congrats for taking this terrifying step!! i'm so glad the experience was uplifting 💕 seriously can't wait to read this one day!!
hahaha yes, embarrassing is also a great descriptor for it! excited for u to read it! (and literally responding to this comment in between reading chapters of ur wip rn, lol)
Brielle! You are such an inspiration. I'm so grateful that you are sharing this journey with us. You are killing it!! Can’t wait to read the final draft 💛💐😊🧋
This is so sweet! So glad your feedback is so helpful and I completely agree with the feeling of sharing your work. It is mortifying but also so rewarding!
I loved your open mindedness to receiving feedback, which can be tough sometimes and that’s totally okay too! Sorry about hearing your bad experience in hs :(( I’m so glad you refound your hobby and I can’t wait to read this book!! ❤
I loved seeing your excitement over the feedback (and totally get the nerves over sharing work)!! Everything you shared made me even more excited for this book AAHH 🫶🫶
I mean... you actually used the word "nauseated" properly, which is almost unheard of these days. I'd say you're well on your way! ;-) I totally agree with you about worldbuilding... that's such a huge challenge! That and backstory. It's great that you're getting such awesome feedback! You look so happy talking about it the story!
Feedback is great and can be quite addictive. I sort of have the reverse experience to most writers. I started writing on Wattpad, so each time I finished a chapter, it was shared. I never developed the fear of letting my writing be read and actually, having eyes on it right away was the great motivation and joy. I could not wait for the comments to come in. I loved all the theories and predictions, and just pure emotions people had while reading. And I found my best friend because she was leaving a ton of comments each time But now I no longer write on Wattpad, and it was very hard transitioning into writing just for myself and overcoming the urge to share my writing right away. I still cannot help it and send snippets to friends to satisfy that need at least a little bit. I live off of feedback. But yes, nowadays it feels more anxiety-inducing, because a lot of my friends are writers, and oftentimes better than me, so getting feedback there is more intimidating than casual readers. "scary stab stab dagger lady" is still my favourite nickname for Aurora, given by someone after reading chapter 1
this is so interesting! I get that--the type of feedback you get from readers vs writers is vastly different. I used to post my books on a website similar to wattpad and also got used to getting instantaneous feedback, it's an adjustment but I do think waiting for feedback leads to better outcomes! best of luck w your writing endeavors :)
as someone who has been writing fanfic for 15 years, sharing my writing has never really scared me... until now I'm writing a book. I just recently sent my finished draft to some readers and god, the anxiety of that!! esp when 2 of them had NEVER read a single word I've ever written. It was such a new feeling for me, but at the end of it i felt so relieved... i agreed with pretty much everything & honestly their feedback even helped my confidence because 1 of them in particular was surprised by just HOW clean it was (it was *technically* a "first draft" but i've written 4 different versions of this "first draft" over the last few years and overall, i hate writing messy drafts so my stuff tends to be clean altho kinda rambly i noticed... which i have fixed lol) & was like "no this is GOOD". But thanks to their feedback, I'm almost through with my large revisions. I'm right at the end. I don't foresee any more big changes needing to happen and i really think I was able to add some things in this draft that REALLY solved the issues that they did bring up. feedback is so important and as scary as it is, i really have enjoyed the process of getting it and making changes based on it, esp with this book I have been trying to write for 4 years and could never quite get *right*... though there are some big differences between this version and my initial vision for it, it finally feels correct, like it's something good and has potential. It's a far cry from the 1st version of it i wrote 4 years ago.
that's amazing!! congrats on getting to the end of those big developmental revisions. It is so satisfying when things finally click into place and feel *right*, im just getting the smallest taste of that in revising and it is so nice! congrats on your progress and thanks for sharing
Brielle! I wanted to say how much I admire you! You are talented, genuine, and incredible. Thank you for sharing your journey and for inspiring me to FINALLY make a UA-cam channel and instagram for my aspiring author journey. I’m super nervous honestly but I have always dreamed about writing/publishing a book and making a UA-cam channel. I am hoping this will keep me accountable and it’s like shit is getting real lmao. I’m an early elementary teacher turned stay at home mom to my 6 month old son and I’m navigating balancing all the things. Reading and writing have been my outlet as well for my mental health and anxiety! I say all this to share that along with that, your UA-cam channel has been a source of inspiration and joy for me. I am really excited to support your channel, journey, and book! You are doing amazing and keep doing the damn thang, girl!! Sending you all the love!! :) PS sorry for the novel length comment brain dump hahaha I guess it’s fitting
aw!! this is such a sweet comment!! thank you so much, I'm so glad you are enjoying the content and it is so nice to feel such support!! best of luck with your new UA-cam, that is so exciting! tag me when you post your first video, id love to see it :)
i'm dealing with the issue now of having my first few chapters looked at WHILE IM WRITING the first draft. has it been helpful? yes, but it's hindering the rest of my writing too. i think sitting down and not rushing into getting a second pair of eyes is the best thing.
so true tia! I agree that there is definitely such a thing as bringing in readers tooo early. its nice to be able to do a couple passes and clean things up before getting those extra eyes :)
Man I need to make writer friends I have one friend that likes to read (romance only though) but I am still planning my book so I still have time. And please Brielle boycott Starbucks wish you the best
hehehe was so honored to be one of your first trusted readers for this story🥹 i'm glad the feedback was helpful and i literally can't wait to read more !!!!!!! 🫶🏻
me: "i love this book, i'm so excited to read the other chapters!" you immediately after: "that being said, sharing your work is terrifying, mortifying, scary, SCARY" hahaha idk why that just had me dyinggggg but anyways, sharing work is definitely super hard to do so i'm so honored that you trusted me with your precious story 🥹 🤎
HAHAHAH that is so funny I didn't even realize those two sections were right next to each other lmaooo. I promise ur feedback was not mortifying nor scary!! lol.
