- Hey, motorheads! In this video, we will show you how to replace the front brake pads and rotors on a 2016 Toyota 4 Runner. This video also works for Toyota 4Runners between the years 2016 and 2019!

Great video! To add - probably best to make sure slide surfaces on caliper are cleaned and lubed with light coat of brake grease. Also not a bad idea to use brake grease on the caliper pins and on back of the shims of the pads.

Great video! A few others added copper anti-seize to the backside of the backs and did something to re-compress the pistons after the new pads were in. Are either of those necessary?
A good tip I’ve heard is to put a lug nut on to secure the rotor while you reinstall the calipers. Then remove it, of course before you put the tire back on.

Never mentioned the backing plates on the old pads. Ideally, they should be cleaned & re-installed with new set
I changed my pads this morning I reused the retaining (oem) clips the bottom one in the (new pads) was ok but they gave me some carter pins instead of the oem retaining clip through the 2 pins like I said I reused the clips I don't think it will brake I will be at the toyota dealer tomorrow talking to a sales guy maybe I can talk to a mechanic ? easy !!!!! and saved me like $300

Hey there. Quick question. What are the torque specs for the front and rear caliper bolts as well as the brake line bolt for a 2016 4 runner?
how much do you decompress the piston caliper so the new pads does not contact with rotor when driving? decompress all the way in?
oh then cranked over the motor pumped the brakes got cleaned up and took it for a drive for about 20 miles very nice braking at lights and so forth

No Sil-Glyde used on contacting surfaces?
Just need rotor replacement only, can that be done

Great video, however
You failed to clean the the piston where it contacts the back of the pads, and you did not use brake grease as well or lubricate the pin shafts.
Otherwise very good video.
Thanks, pistons seemed clean enough to contact the pads backing pad, I will let you know if there is un even wear. And the pins had plenty of grease I did not want to over fill, which makes it fun for reassembly. Happy Motoring!- Blair

So you can replace the pads only without taking the caliper off?
Yes. You slide the pins out, compress the caliper pistons, then slide new pads back in.
Are these considered “disc brakes” or “drum brakes”?
Scott Ttocs these are Disc brakes.

These are the premium Weaver brake rotors with Akebono pads. Hope this helps! Happy Motoring!

I cant remember, I thought I said it out loud in the video! I believe 8mm but I do not know the pitch off hand! A great thing to have around if you will be doing car work is a nut and bolt assortment set from harborfreight! I used one of those to do this job. I hope this helps! Happy Motoring-Blair

I'm guessing he is wanting to insert the pins opposite of how they are from the factory for easier removal in the future (flip the pin 180° from factory install). I'm guessing he is wanting more room to tap the pins.
How have you liked those tires? I was thinking about getting them for my 4runner

Is it 91ft lbs on these two bolts (7:03)?
2009 Tacoma 4X4 base, both both came loose & totally lost how can two come out at 91 torqued down to.
According to Identifix for your year Tacoma it is 90 ft lbs of torque. If both of them came lose and you lost all brakes I would say that your bolts were not properly torqued. We always put blue loctite 242 on brake hardware. How long after your brake job did the system fail? Are you ok !? Crazy scary!
@@Revitauto They were torqued down at 91ft lbs on two 17mm bolts.
83ft lbs on five 21mm wheel lug nuts.
The 21mm wheel lug nuts checked & still at 83ft lbs.
But the 17mm caliber bolts was gone & one loose.Ta
So how can they be gone & missing when 91ft lbs applied to two 17mm bolts while the 83ft lbs on 21mm wheel lug nuts are in tight?
Tacoma driven less than 311 miles.
I would have to see the truck in person to give a better answer. Are the threads damaged into the knuckle? What position were you in while using your torque wrench? Did you use any loctite? Does the rotor have an heat marks?
@@Revitauto No one or you don't need to see it in person. It was missing & one was loose.
The 21mm wheel lug nuts are still on wheel. All four wheel torque to 83ft lbs.
Caliber's 17mm bolts were torque down to 91ft lbs.
One 17mm bolt on top was completely gone. Thread was not stripped.
Lower 17mm bolt was loose.
Again both 17mm female thread are good.
Torque 17mm bolts when Tacoma was 4ft off ground by master tech & I checked.
Then on ground torque four 21mm wheel lug nut to 83ft lbs.
So what do you think would cause one to loosen & one missing?

Normally I do just the pins, and dont do the anti rattle clips or the back of the pads. I just clean it all up real good, and then the new pads have an anti noise pad on them so it does not make noise.
Provide bolt torque specs please
91 lb-ft on the caliper mounting bolts according to the owners manual

Hi Matt, I do not have a part number we get a majority of our parts from Advance Auto Parts
