    I'm laughing to myself thinking about how an ordinary dinner of you with your wife must be like...Honey, these green peas...did you put the Eastern Mediterranean sea salt on them? I could tell. I can taste the dry saltiness of that Greek workmanship, the Turkish spiciness...mixed with the creaminess of the peas...quite fantastic. hahaha! And is that South...no wait...southeastern Wisconsin butter?! OOOOHhhh top notch, my dear!

    Bought a bottle of 1792 a few weeks back. A very solid bourbon. Did a blind with a few friends comparing bourbons 2x the price. 1792 compared favorably.

    Nice that you updated this video. Your old video was the first thing I watched on UA-cam 3 years ago when just getting into Whiskey and some sections were already gone. Knob Creek 9 year is no more and even the NAS is over $30 where I am, Elijah Craig would be good in this lineup it's $25 everywhere near me. Cheers

    You’re so right on the Larceny. It’s my go to when I’m just looking for an easy sipper. It’s really that good. Elijah Craig small batch is the same for me too. Little different flavor profile, but sooooo smooth.

    Chris, Great line up. The more I drink, the more I like the Larceny. Haven't tried the KC 9 year since the fantastic SiB 12+ year 120 proof store picks are around $40 and like a Bookers Jr. OGD 114 is still around $25 here in Myrtle Beach. Cheers.

    I gave one of my best friends Jay, whose just getting into and learning about bourbon, a bottle of Larceny, very disappointing, no finish, very flat. I bought a bottle thinking it was going to be good, not. He agreed. Out of your list I like the WT 101 first, have yet to try the Grand dad. Have to try 1792 again, it's been a while. Knobb creek rye is better even more so than the high alcohol volume of the single barrel. Nice review liquor hound!!

    For those watching, the knob Creek he has (9 year age started) has long been replaced with a non age stated "small batch patiently aged" label, meaning they no longer hold themselves to the 9 year minimum. You won't be able to buy the exact bottle, but not taking away from the quality of the bourbon.

    Great video. I just found you and will be back to view more. I like when experts (like yourself) differentiate when a Bourbon is a "Wheater" or a "Heavy Rye" etc. You clearly state that when describing the Larceny (Wheater) and then the 1792 as a "Rye second ingredient". But then didn't really specify the others....
    This is helpful to novices as myself. For example, say my daily drinker is Bulleit, which to my understanding has rye as a heavy secondary ingredient. So when I watch these tasting reviews, what I really like to have stated is: If you enjoy Bourbon X, then give Bourbon Y a try. Hope that make sense.

    I’m admiring all those bottles behind you! It looks like many of them have been drunk. How long do you keep them before finishing a bottle? And how long before you deduct a degradation in the flavor?

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  5 років тому

      Thanks! If you don't do anything to them, you'll probably get 6 months to a year without losing noticeable flavor. I use a argon tank to fill/replace the oxygen trapped in my open bottles. For smaller home bars you can just use a wine preserver spray (like "Private Preserve"). You can buy them from Amazon for about $10 and they say you can get 120 uses out of one. They recommend a 1 sec. spray followed by 3-4 small bursts, but when I was using them I sprayed them heavy (2 seconds long and 3-4 short bursts), so I only got 70-80 good seals per can. The key to using gas is that you do not disturb/move the bottle once it's gassed (which will disrupt the gas layer). Here's an old video of mine where I talked about oxidation and the spray (starts at the 4:22 mark): ua-cam.com/video/VWYYGS4wStQ/v-deo.html . To see the larger argon tank that I use, here's a video that shows my setup (starts at the 10:18 mark): ua-cam.com/video/vGic-_cI5FM/v-deo.html . Cheers!

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  4 роки тому +2

      To prevent my open bottles from “going bad” which is extensive oxidation (some say degradation), I keep a close eye on cork conditions and use a tank setup of a heavy inert gas (argon) to reseal all my bottles after every pour. Now for smaller collections/home bars, I'd recommend using a wine preserver (like "Private Preserve") to help protect the opened bottles. Thanks for the vote of confidence and I’m glad you enjoy my videos. I’m aiming to get to that point, but it takes revenue to provide that amount of relevant content (meaning bottles that are currently available). Right now I’m having to do other spirit related jobs to help cover my costs and that can take away from my camera time. But I am rewarding my patrons with bonus videos every month (3 already in this first week) and I announced a special drawing for Aged & Ore glasses. When starting something new, I’d rather underpromise and overdeliver than the opposite. It’s a learning experience and I appreciate those who have faith and patience with me in this new endeavor. LH, what is your opinion on Blanton’s Bourbon? I managed to win a sweepstakes and was offered the opportunity to buy the single barre for like $65, so I did. But I keep hearing they’re hard to find. And some people love it and some just absolutely hate it.
    What’s your take, if any?
    Have you tried it? Is it overhyped?

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  3 роки тому +1

      You know, it had a solid rep for decades as an easy to find, above average drinker, but when the Bourbon boom occurred, every distillery was having supply issues. That caused some brand's to become harder to find or allocated while their overall quality weakened. This was one of the big names that I feel suffered from it. There's still plenty of demand for it, but the "hate" I guess stems from its current quality to hype ratio. That said, I know there's still some tasty barrels sneaking out every now and then. Since it's a single barrel product, there's always a chance you have one of those good ones, but you won't know until you try it. So congratulations on picking that up at retail pricing and try not to go into it with any preconceived feelings - one way or the other. Cheers!

    In your personal and professional opinion. Does the liquor that you OPEN have an expiration/deterioration? I've read mixed information from lasting 3 to7 years depending on proof and storage etc. I have over 300 bottles and would hate for them to go to waste. Thanks in advance

      Like you mentioned there are plenty of variables that can shorten or lengthen the time a open bottle will remain drinkable. In general if you don't do anything to them, you'll probably get 6 months to a year without losing noticeable flavor. From there you’ll notice a subtle decline in certain aromas/flavors. Cheers!

    Hey Hound, nice review! A couple of mentions not in the list would be Elijah Craig Small Batch, Buffalo Trace, and Evan Williams SB. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these three as well.
    Cheers!

      Thank you! The ones you listed are all pretty solid as well and would have probably made my top 10. Cheers!

    I enjoyed your review although did not conect with much of your tasting notes. The review strangely enough reminded me of an old Ralfy vlog where he was reviewing two heavily peated single malts. He gave us pages of tasting notes yet not once did he mention the peat! Coming from the world of Scotch Single malts, my initial reaction to American Bourbons was intense caramel sweetness and very dominant corn milk. By corn milk, I mean the starchy white liquid in a can of sweet corn. concentrated sweet caramel popcorn, slightly yeasty and sour. This to me is the most dominant smell and favour. This can corn flavour note wasn't mentioned once. Is that because is is so common to all Bourbons, you don't bother mentioning it (like Ralfy forgetting to mention peat) or you don't get that at all?
    My first bourbon was the Four Roses Single Barrel. It was so sickly sweet and smelly with canned sweet corn that it put me off for a year. Then someone recommened Elijah Craig Small Batch. OK, this, I can appreciate. I still don't particularly like it but I can understand why someone might. yes, it's sweet but far less so, a lot more balanced with lovely wood spices and dried yellow fruit.
    I am surprised you did not include this in your line up. Is it difficulty to get in some places?
    I compared the Elijah Craig along side a Deanston 18 which was matured in Ex-Heaven Hill Elijah Craig 12 Year Old barrels. lovely comparison.
    Even so, compared to Scotch Single Malts, I find American Boubons lack subtlety. Everything is up front and in your face.

      Thanks for your comment. I could go really in depth as to how and why corn occasionally shows up in bourbon profiles, but for the sake of not having a crazy long comment, I’ll just say that my suspicion is that your nose/palate is extremely sensitive to corn so it stands out a lot more to you than to most. Similar to how sulphur is handled in sherried single malts. Coming from that world you may have noticed that most people can deal with small amounts of sulphur (matchstick or gunpowder let’s say) while a few will have zero tolerance for it. It’s not that anyone is wrong, it just everyone’s palates are different and theirs is super sensitive to it.
      As for Elijah Craig Small Batch, once they dropped the 12 year age statement, I noticed its profile change from the deeper brown sugar and oak you mentioned, to a younger, fruitier one with much less oak. It’s still good, but it wasn’t enough to knock anyone off my list. Now if I did a top 10, it may have made it. Cheers!

      Thanks for your reply. I think you are partially right. However, it does seem that regular Scotch Single malt drinkers who are used to 100% Malted barley mash distilled spirit are more sensitive to picking up that milky corn juice smell in American Bourbons. See this very reilable reviewer, The Sprit Safe, where Rob, a British guy now living in Canada, reviews the Elijah Craig 12 and the first flavour note he mentions is.....wait for it.......corn!
      ua-cam.com/video/_FmJmQfilwU/v-deo.html
      Towards the end, Rob mentions Butter pop Corn which I also find very dominant in Bourbons.
      I think you don't notive it as you are used to it, just like a peat head might talk about fruity and vanilla flavours but completely ignore all those earthy peaty smoky flavours of a whisky with PPM levels of 40 or more!

      Like my previous video on Bourbons Under $30, that may eventually become true, but for now these are all found fairly easily near me under $30. Now the McKenna 10 that I mentioned in the description has jumped up in price and I can no longer recommend it at $60+. Cheers!

    No offense I'm no expert...but larceny is too fruity. Not for your intermediate bourbon lovers. I tried it many times. Usually after one of these UA-cam videos. Still not feeling it. I'll cosign the other 4. Love the channel, but still not larceny.

      I'm not opposed to wheat, like MM, but Larceny doesn't do it for me, either. I'm on my first bottle, so maybe an off batch? Maybe what I was eatinfg/drinking with it?
      Like others have mentioned, I'd put Elijah Craig small batch and Eagle Rare on my list.
      It's hard to disagree with your top 5 when I haven't ever tasted 3 of your choices. 😃. Off to the ABC store. 👍🏼
