tammy cantor yaaasss that was the one where i thought of two I JUST WENT INTO BARNES AND NOBLES AND SAID WHY DONT THESE BOOKS HAVE NUMBERS ON THEM? Lol
Chelsea Kerns I usually buy my books from ThriftBooks.com and you can get them anywhere from $3 to original price and if you spend $10 or more you get free shipping.
Fun Fact: J.K. Rowling had Hermione explain how to pronounce her name to Viktor Krum in Goblet of Fire because J.K. Rowling didn't like that everyone was pronouncing Hermione's name wrong
Ghostly Demigod they had that in the shadow bone series but they still didn't have like pronunciation guide in the back so they had the italicized words in there but you had no idea what they meant coz there was no guide or at least not in my book
There is a map in all of the *Throne of Glass* and *A Court of Thorns and Roses* books. In *We Were Liars* too and it's not even a sci-fi or fantasy book.
Lindsey fromBFCG I never see the pronunciation guides at the end until after I've finished the book. There's one in Crooked Kingdom as well. Why don't publishers put them at the front of the book? I'm always scared I'm going to accidentally spoil myself by flipping to the end of a book.
teresafoo because for some it can cause spoilers as who would be important and who isn't, because you only need name pronouncements for the people who don't die.. So I guess some will see it as spoilers
Or the tv show cover. I bought city of bones and it has jace and clary from the tv show on the cover. And yea grace me with their hotness but still I want the original shit
If i find a new bookseries i don't know about, and that doesn't have a number, i always stand akwardly in the bookstore while checking goodreads to make sure that i buy the right book XD
The moments when the books in a series aren't numbered so you have to read the blurbs to figure out which one you are meant to read next but then you read a blurb and the first line is like: 'After Bob died and they defeated the Dragon...' NOOO DON'T DO THIS TO MEEEE!!
the series numbering drives me bonkers. it is not that hard to actually put a number on there ive been spoiled many times while reading backs of books to see what they are about
The first thing. YES. I don't wanna google the series order every freaking time. Also I'd love if book with too many characters (like A Song Of Fire And Ice) would like have a character guide or something. Cause it's way too confusing for me.
All of the A Song Of Ice And Fire books do have character guides at the back, breaking it down into the different houses and who is related to who, even saying who is alive and dead at that point
I don't know, maybe it's a different version, all the ones I've seen do have the characters at the back, but maybe other editions don't. I just had a look at my editions, and just to give you an idea about how many characters are in it, the first book (Game of Thrones) has 19 pages of characters, the most recently released (A Dance With Dragons) has 61 pages! Have you tried just skimming the last few pages of the book? Because it isn't right at the back, there are acknowledgements and stuff after it
😂😂😂 - I agree with the numbering on the spines. On one or two occasions I've read ahead when I'm not supposed to. ("Just gimme a little ring-ding-ding!") 😂😂😂
Chloe Matthews my public library put Ignite Me before Unravel Me (from the Shatter Me series) and it didn't say anything about it being the third book until I flipped to the back to see the blurbs and I realized I had just read the entire "last book"
Michal Kate Castleman bad luck! that completely sucks! i did a very silimer thing with that series and i brought the last one but thankfully i didn't read it, i now need to buy the first 2
Depends how big the world building is imo. I don't even have to bother remembering the disc world by terry Pratchett because he always uses the same places and doesn't get me confused at all, after all, every city has its uniqueness and they are hard to forget
As a part time librarian, I sometimes have to dig to find the series number because I understand how stressful it is when books aren't in the correct order.
YES TO THE PHYSICAL AND EBOOK THING!! There are times when I can't carry a book around or times when i forget my book and would love to have a digital copy with me. I'd love to be able to own both without having to pay full price for both
Numbers on books are so handy for series books - so many series I've read out of order accidentally! Totally agree with the ebook being available for free when buying physical books (lots of films do this so why can't books)
Giving an ebook with the physical copy shouldn't be that big of a deal. I mean, if you buy a blue ray, most of the time you get three copies of the movie(blue ray, regular DVD, and a digital download). Books should do that too! I'd get so much more reading done that way!
I just went to the bookstore. I thought I was going in,get a book, and pay for it. Nope I was in the book store for 45 minutes looking for the perfect book 😂
Faith Anderson At least you came out with a book! I'm currently in spain, and I drove 40 minutes to visit an English bookstore and I left the store empty handed! The frustration is real!
Got a new Urban fantasy book yesterday and in the Bock is Vocabulary, the learn the the fantasy language! This is so cool! Or maps! I love maps in fantasy books!
The lunar chronicles series I was confused on too. So I went to Marissa Meyers page and she said that there wasn't really a said order to read the series in. She simply advised you read them in the way they were published (Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Fairest, Winter, Stars Above.)
For the pronunciation guide. There is one series that actually has one of those. It is called the keepers, and it is so helpful because there are so many crazy made up names in that series.
I also want numbers for the orders on the spines! I've bought book 2 before because I didn't look up the order of the book and that is just so annoying to have to look it up when your in the bookstore to see if it's the first one.
OH MY GOSH!!! In the Level Thumps series, they have two sections in the back that will list you the main characters along with what type of magical being they are with a bit of backstory and also the types of magical beings in the book and what they can do! They also have maps in them. I swear every fantasy book should have these things!
4:40 A book series called Wings of Fire actually has a guide in the beginning to each book about the different dragon tribes, what they look like, and their abilities. As well as students/rulers/allies, along with an actual picture as a reference. Which is really nice
As an author, I found this SUPER helpful! Some of the things you said I'm already doing (or I'm planning to do them) but some I hadn't thought of before. Thanks, Jessie! ❤
I work at a library and I totally agree that all series should have a number on the spine! Trying to shelf series is sooo annoying when you don't know what order they go in.
Just came from one of your old videos haha. Great video Jesse. Edit: we have the same feels for everything you listed. I *absolutely* love full cast audiobooks.
The Familiar Series by Mark Z. Danielewski makes it VERY easy to know the order of the books, and it comes with a bookmark in the form of the ribbon on every book. And The Chronicles of Prydain series has a pronunciation guide AND maps in each book.
The Mistborn books are super long so have summaries for the prev book in them, they also have a chart explaining the magic system, maps, and an entire index explaining terminology, nicknames, etc. I love it and I agree that the small things in books rly make a difference !
I 100% agree with you on the physical book/ebook thing! When you buy recently made records nowadays you usually get a coupon code that lets you download the soundtrack for free on a certain website! I feel like that's how books should be from now on tbh. You get a little card that comes with, so they could maybe put it in the book jacket, or have a little packet that comes with that the seller gives you after purchase!
Amen, to the first one. When I pick up a book, the second thing I do, after reading the synopsis, is check the front pages to see if there's a list of the author's other works. Usually if the book is part of a series, it will have a list of the books that are currently released, so I can just check where the book I'm holding falls in the order. That has saved me from making a mistake on more than one occasion. Doesn't help much online, but at least if you're already online it's easier to look up more info on the book and the author.
The numbers on spines is so helpful!!! I also wish all series had that! And full cast audiobooks are the best! There is one narrator who does voices very well, and that is Katherine Kellgren. But full cast adds so much depth to the characters!
OMG YESSSSSSS numbered series PLEASE! I would so much rather have numbered series than spend the time looking at copyright dates or looking at Amazon/Goodreads to remember the order!
1:10 The Warrior Cats series is a great example of that as well. Currently, there are 40-ish books in total, and if there wouldn't be anything on the back, you'd be hella screwed. So on the back of each book is the number of the season and the number of the book itself. Like "Season 5 Book 3" or "Season 2 Book 6" (each season has six books. They all play in the same universe, but there's often a gap of a couple of years between the series or the protagonists change etc)
That thing you were describing about ebooks actually happens with comics. So many people prefer reading them digitally with the guided view function and so marvel and dc usually offer a digital download if you buy the issue in print.
I swear Rick’s books are SO good, every book has a number, and inside there’s a list of all his books he has ever wrote (ok maybe not all but PJO, HoO, TKC, Magnus Chase books and ToA are there) some even have maps! Gosh I love them
Hi Jessie, thought colour pages edging would be a request - as I think that always looks so cool and creative. Seen some amazing things online and cool things done by publishers. I think numbering for some series only happens with some publishers once a few books come out. As maybe the publisher only commits to publishing one or two books to test the market, and then commits to the rest of them. Bookmarks with books is an awesome idea - hope that is something they do in the future. Happy reading
WE NEED THE DISCOUNT FOR AUDIO BOOK!!! See I always use audible but it’s also better for me to follow along while listening. So I usually do that, but then I buy TWO books and I don’t know what I am going to do when I get into college and stuff and don’t have enough money for essentials, double the cost of books, and what ever else I have to buy for my dyslexia to be able to keep up in school.
Yes! I totally agree with numbering books in the series. I once started a series on the second book by accident, and I didn't figure it out until half way through.
Yes! I agree with all of these, but especially on the book download if you own the physical book. I love to switch out between physical and ebook. Ebooks are just easier to read while my husband is asleep.
The number on the spine is so true! I have to Goodreads books at bookstores all the time because I'm not sure if the book is a sequel or not and I don't want to read the blurb in case of spoilers. Also, built in bookmarks is an incredible idea!
I totally agree on the numbers for series and the pronunciation guides! I can't count the times I picked up a book assuming it was a stand alone, just to find out that it's part of a series!
Yes a copy of an ebook with a physical book would be awesome!!! Just like when you buy certain DVD's they have a digital copy you can use !!! Numbers on book series is always welcome!
i definitely agree with the book numbers on the spines! i don't think i have many books that are apart of a series that aren't numbered though, but book numbers on spines PLEASE! built in bookmarks would be great on books! especially when i keep losing my bookmarks.... a pronunciation guide in sci-fi and fantasy books would be a must honestly, especially in a lot Tolkien's works. i'm often struggling to pronounce a lot of the names and the language in his books, which is why i'm loving that in the Children of Hurin book it's got a note on the pronunciation.
A number on the spine would be the most useful thing in the world. I can't even tell you how many times I've accidentally read the second book in the series first so many times
In the Netherlands, the Lunar Chronicles got re-published (because the first versions got out of print) and now they are all brought in hardcover form, with a bookmark with the main couple of the book and THE NUMBER ON THE SPINE. HALLELUJAH.
When I read Harry Potter and everyone was complaining that I was reading too much I tried to trick them by putting a bookmark at specific page and then read but not changing the bookmark's position so I had to remember the page and through this I somehow learned to always remember the page. It has never ever happened that I forgot to remember the page and for the record I'm not reading a little amount of books!
Omg so relatable😂 WE WANT NUMBERS! WE ARE NOT THAT CLEVER!

Kaitlyn Carroll I love fun facts!
that's amazing oh my god
For books that take place in a certain place I would like a map
Ghostly Demigod they had that in the shadow bone series but they still didn't have like pronunciation guide in the back so they had the italicized words in there but you had no idea what they meant coz there was no guide or at least not in my book

Read Tolkien then. His maps have so much detail in them.
YES TO PRONUNCIATION GUIDES. YES.
Elise Trexler especially to the mortal instruments. Honestly people usually say half of the words in the books wrong
Herondale Girl It would have been really handy for CoG (Idris, Alecante(?))

Lindsey fromBFCG I never see the pronunciation guides at the end until after I've finished the book. There's one in Crooked Kingdom as well. Why don't publishers put them at the front of the book? I'm always scared I'm going to accidentally spoil myself by flipping to the end of a book.

Yesss I just did this the other day with the Trials of Apollo-series 🙈
this happened to me, my father was in a work trip and india and got me the Tyrants tomb before i had access to burning maze.
the series numbering drives me bonkers. it is not that hard to actually put a number on there ive been spoiled many times while reading backs of books to see what they are about
@Alexandria Muse That aswell. Turns me off reading that series

Catsandcamera I also only have the first book...my bad sorry

I am good with the numbers as long as the numbers are in the same place on every book
DiegoVlogs Tell me bout it. I read a series once and it didn't have numbers on the spines.
I ended up reading in this order: 4,6,3,2,7,5,1 :|
every fantasy or scifi MUST have a map. i can't remember which city/star is next to which lake/spacestation
Depends how big the world building is imo. I don't even have to bother remembering the disc world by terry Pratchett because he always uses the same places and doesn't get me confused at all, after all, every city has its uniqueness and they are hard to forget

The second one is unnecessary for me, all my books are wrinkly and creased and stained af.
Amber Daezea ew
I totally agree on the numbers for series and the pronunciation guides! I can't count the times I picked up a book assuming it was a stand alone, just to find out that it's part of a series!
....these are first world problems Jesseth
Anna Wheeler well, of course, it's about books.
yea but im asuming you've complained about slow wifi so were all in the same boat ahaha
Yes a copy of an ebook with a physical book would be awesome!!! Just like when you buy certain DVD's they have a digital copy you can use !!! Numbers on book series is always welcome!
I agree with every "want" you stated! Especially the Physical book and e-book combo!! Thank you for saying all of these things out loud!
I totally agree on #1. I was looking at the Lunar Chronicles and I didn't know what order they go in
I am so with you on putting the series number SOMEWHERE on the book! And the e-book with a physical book purchase!
The soft cover books, of Falling Kingdoms are numbered of 1 and 2. Basically the first to series you just numbered FK and PJO I love those series.
i definitely agree with the book numbers on the spines! i don't think i have many books that are apart of a series that aren't numbered though, but book numbers on spines PLEASE!
built in bookmarks would be great on books! especially when i keep losing my bookmarks....
a pronunciation guide in sci-fi and fantasy books would be a must honestly, especially in a lot Tolkien's works. i'm often struggling to pronounce a lot of the names and the language in his books, which is why i'm loving that in the Children of Hurin book it's got a note on the pronunciation.
I agree with the first one COMPLETELY! I’m glad someone finally said it.
Absolutely yes on the numbers on the spine! I can't stand not knowing in which order to read a series!
A number on the spine would be the most useful thing in the world. I can't even tell you how many times I've accidentally read the second book in the series first so many times
I totally agree with you about having book series with numbers on the spine of the book.
Amen to numbering series! As a librarian, trying to help people with books, this would be so helpful!
So true. Feeling the reader feels right now.
I agree with the numbering of books. FYI Brandon Sanderson's mistborn series does have charts explaining abilities within the magic system.
