    MIND BLOWN! Couldn't think of a better description Jeff. I've been struggling with the concept of "The thing under the thing." Not in idea, but in execution and this helps soo much more with that and helped to bring it into context better for me. I believe I know now what I need to do to connect my audience to my videos more and give them a reason to be invested in it with me. Thank you.

    Thank you kind Sir! Linked to you through "video creators" as I sift through terabytes of footage from a (currently) failed attempt to make a documentary about Muay Thai while living as a tourist in Thailand for a year... the first few questions in your PDF expanded my already very expansive mind so a rarity, cheers! I already had several ideas for the footage AND NOW some beautiful questions to formulate a plot/plan/course of action through the ideas and footage!

    Human beings have been doing this for thousands of years, from the layers of meaning in Biblical Jewish meditation literature to Charles Dickens to Wes Anderson.
    As creators, when we start thinking about "the thing under the thing," we join a long history of doing the same. Our viewers don't always consciously read these meanings out of our content, but that layering always impacts the feeling they'll get from it.
    Fantastic video, I'm ready to challenge myself and think about the thing under the thing. Keep killing it my man.

    The thing under the thing is also a concept that can help anyone that's on a path of self realization to figure out exactly what parts of themselves and their history that they need to heal in order to move forward and beyond their cycles that they keep living. Most of the time, as adults, when we get upset about something, it's not actually about the thing, but the thing under the thing!!
    I'm so stoked that yale ill have shown me how this applies to story telling too!! I want to help people heal and know themselves more deeply, and I'm building my skills as a filmmaker, mainly as a tool for that!! So realizing that some of the same concepts can be applies to healing AND filmmaking... whoa... game changer!! Thanks Jeff!! Uda man!!

    Thank you for doing this Jeff. So, so helpful right now. This is a BIG help to many. Please do more. Quick question, I've downloaded the 27 questions to craft the perfect video (which is another big help); where does "The Thing Under the Thing" coincides with the 27 questions? Would it be part of question #1: What is my Desired Outcome?
    Oh, I'm in Dallas now, but I grew up in the same area. Made me a little homesick. :)

    • @StoryGreenlight
      @StoryGreenlight  6 років тому

      Hey Jon - TTUTT isn't addressed directly in the list, but yeah, Desired Outcome would touch on it. That's more part of the actual content itself, which the questions mostly avoid to keep things more applicable overall.

    Jeff this was phenomenal and as a UA-cam educator myself I feel this is something I must share with my subscribers! By the way what’s the amazing song you used starting from 4:50 it was so inspirational

    • @StoryGreenlight
      @StoryGreenlight  6 років тому

      Awesome, Tom! Much appreciated. The cue at 4:50 is by Johannes Bornlöf called "I Will Not Be Shaken 2" from Epidemic Sound. Hit the "find similar" button on that cue and you'll find all sorts of cool stuff like it!

    This reminds me of the term 'sentimental analysis'.
    Personally, I find that there are two minds. One is emotional, savage, risky, unchill. The other is chill, connected to the feelings, careful. The purpose that some teachers try to dictate is to find an equilibrium between the two.

    It's funny, at 1:15 with Peter talking to camera I was thinking, "That looks like Adelaide Street in Belfast". And then it turned out it was Adelaide Street in Belfast.

      Make sure you check out the latest podcast episodes on this channel that talk about the thing under the thing - this video here is missing a lot of explanation in terms of how to actually put it to use. But yes, it’s incredibly powerful stuff.

    It's so true, I've been running around telling my husband. I have to start shooting and editing, show I can show like the thing under the thing!! 😂 He's like huh? Then I explained to him the racing video with your son, and he's like yea that makes so much sense. The thing under the thing is definitely your thing Jeff! I love seeing your videos it's like a little notification for me to make sure I'm thinking about my channel from a more purposeful standpoint. Also, you put into a way that I can actually understand and feel like can take back and try to implement it. Thanks so much for all you do!!

    Thanks for giving us the key to unlock the thing under the thing. Most people don't look past the surface.... Reading people is an art on it's own....
