Summary: 1. Every sequence should have a beginning a middle and an end - 3 to 5 shots 2. Every shot should either be instilling a question in the viewers mind, or it should be answering questions. The questions are who, what, why? 3. End with a strong resolution to the sequence. 4. Show don’t tell, leave a little mystery, a bit of something that the viewer can figure out themselves.

I enjoyed the last part. Making daily vlogs is hard, but i hope to accomplish two things from it - consistency, and skill. I want to be a better story teller. Thanks man.
Show, don’t tell. Probably one of the best advise for any kind of visual storytelling. Thanks for this video, I learnt something very important today 🤝❤️
We (other youtubers) are sooo lucky to have you in this space. More tutorials please 🙏 And thank you for sharing this information with the rest of us 👊
Learned so much from this video 💯! One of your best ones yet! Can’t wait to start implementing this! Stop spoon-feeding and leave space for your audience to wonder. Create intrigue! So much gold here 🤯 Seriously Thank You man!!!
I absolutely loved this video man! And I loved those clips of Alfred Hitchcock sprinkled in every now and then. I seriously still don’t understand why you don’t have a million subscribers yet! GRRRRR!
Too good. Too good. I don’t think I can watch your videos anymore because you guys are tooooo goooood 😂😂😂😂😂 Ps- I didn’t mean that, OF COURSE ILL KEEP WATCHING 🤩
I was about to quit youtube and then I found your channel, dude I'm not quiting but I am gona start a fresh channel w all your advice. would you mind answering some questions while I watch your video library through the next few weeks? plz I will try to listen and pay attention, either way than u
I've never framed filming sequences as proposing a question for the audience and its genius, honestly feel like an idiot for not seeing that. Again an awesome video man!
This content is solid gold... instructive and inspirational at the same time. I love how you lead with your own example, break it down with humor and personality and keep the audience watching. Don't mind me... gonna just sit down and watch this again!
Wow!!! Your filmmaking is amazing. Studying this. Trying to add more cinematic styling to my videos and vlogs. Thanks for the inspiration and information.
Definitely appreciate the TIME & DEDICATION you bring to the table for the industry of video creation this is another GIANT of a video I would say CLEARLY communicates what needs to be done as it relates to creating better videos and actually TELLING A STORY without actually telling the story. Great Job Jesse. I've been a follower since idk....... I started following you lol
Sorry about the first comment. I see it may have come across in a rude way but I was actually just kidding. My apologies. This video is really done and engaging. Definitely think I struggle with the last part of the show don’t tell. And also story telling in general. Keep it up man. New subscriber!
Out of the sea of content around storytelling this is hands down the best one. The clear lessons, the Hitchcock, the ability to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. Superb 👌
Okay - so i have to say i bought your moment course, i just recently bought Chris Hau's course as well. i didn't realize what i was looking for in both courses was this video. I don't know how to explain it but this so perfectly explains why you make a sequence not how. I feel like so many creators teach you how to make a sequence - hell i've even seen that Hitchcock clip million times. This was so well done that this 9 minute video could be sold like a course.
I love it! Quote of the day: every shot needs to answer a question or ask a question… Actually, that goes for every scene, and every act, and if you get really Noble, The whole film asks a question
Thank you. I just published my first voiceless storytelling video. Your presentation will help me improve my story progression sequences. Weird doing a video where I don’t talk… I do VO work too! 🤣🤣 🎙
That’s last part about the grocery store and bananas helped me a lot… it made me realize I need to get bananas for my daughters. 😆 no just kidding… that’s part was very helpful, instead of saying it, just have the audience visualize you doing it and keep them guessing. Thank you so much!
Did you say that you guys are up in Alaska?? Because I am very impressed and would love to hook up sometime to maybe just have a beverage of choice. Perhaps a nice hot coffee, especially if it’s up in Alaska. We think very much alike about how this story. Thank you so much for your posts.
2:33 : "So, for example at the start of this video..." me, who skipped unrelatable start of the video: "So, he's teaching how to make people skip certain parts? 🗿"
I am scratching my head thinking: how that guy could apply these tips to improve his video with millions of subs and views named "Black Screen, No Music"? 😊
Exactly the video I needed as I'm sat here struggling through this edit. And I'm not even subscribed! Well I wasn't till I saw this. Thanks UA-cam. And thank you Jesse.
Thanks, really helping me understand more about story telling ive been so obsessed with what gear to get but now im just gonna use what ever and try get a good story. thanks
Well amazing video. Oh I need shipping containers 🤠 My boss become so happy when I started cutting window on the contents 😂 one live . Amazing storytelling me eyes 👁️ can live the story. Thank you I do subscribe watching you
Make sure you know what was in those shipping containers. ☝️Sometimes they have residual contamination from chemicals, food that becomes bio hazard after time… nasty shit. That’s why they mostly use new shipping containers for such constructions.
So i am trying to figure out why all my favourite UA-camrs are Canadian. Is it because i am in Canada 🇨🇦 and UA-cam try’s to send me just Canadian content. Or is it that Canadian rock at film making. Great video Jess
Hi Jesse, I just came across your channel for the first time and I really really liked this video. Definetely learned me something in a fun and light way! Great job. I’m going to implent it into my own channel, just started yesterday :) thanks again 🤙🏻
Hey Jesse I felt sad about what happened to you about the studio but let me tell you something men that happened because your future it’s going to be brighter in the new studio men, god bless you and I know it’s going to be a hard process but you gonna make I know that and I hope to see that studio Done good luck 🍀!!!!
We’re teaching a video course at a university this semester, and you better believe we’re gonna show this to our students. Great break down, pal!
I know because I’m enrolled in the video course
Wait a minute, what are you guys doing here?
It’s obvious you should teach anybody anything.
This video is so good. It’s so meta too. Sequences inside of sequences talking about the importance of sequences.
Two JD videos in 3 days? What a gift haha you're awesome man
Great video, thanks
Very niceee :-)

Yes buddy,.. you r the best cook👏, it's my favorite dish, thanks for sharing this awesome recipe😋, cheers😇💗👌👍👍sukria@#!!
This sequence looked like an HBO doc, awesome stuff man.
Show dont tell... Thanks for the reminder
Great tio Jesse!
Cut cut cut, yes sometimes too much info or being spoon-fed insults the viewer intelligence, I so agree with that.
It’s a tricky balance to find between saying too much and not saying enough!
bravo!
Are the shipping containers going to be a permanent part of evil empire? Or is it also temporary until the start of the original layout plans?

Very good. I gotta find that Hitchcock interview now too
Fake snow when unlocking iz so cheezy looking
Damn, love the idea of a giant warehouse with little studio pods

Loved this, will remember to implement it when I’m filming again!
As producer/DJ, how can I implement these tips into my videos?
This is amazing video about trick storytelling. Hope you make more videos like this.
lol, dude I just used this song for a client, such a good track, shame you relegated it to background music
Can you please tell me the name of this track? I can't find it.

Any tutorial on that please?
My friend made it in procreate on his iPad! Just hand drawn and then animated with the app.

Great tips on the sequences. Can't wait to see that new studio build out progression, looks like it has sweet possibilities
I see your comments a lot, you’re cool minded person, you’re friends with anyone… I just subbed 👍

Some people will always skip some parts, it’s not your job to appeal to 100% of people 100% of the time.
감사합니다! I still have so far to go in terms of filming proper broll and sequences but videos like this let me know what the standard is!

Great Content. Amazing. I will try to incorporate that I. My videos.

Hands down - my favourite UA-camr right now!
Thanks for all the great tips Jesse. You gave me some things to think about how to tell a better story with my videos!
Commenting again now after watching the whole vid- I found great value in this. Thank you. Got me thinking how I can improve my vids 🙏
You’re already killing it Laura! You’ve got a natural sense for this that comes through in your videos.
Thank you for this video
Exactly the video I needed as I'm sat here struggling through this edit. And I'm not even subscribed! Well I wasn't till I saw this. Thanks UA-cam. And thank you Jesse.
Not trying to be a buzzkill but the first minute of this was just unexciting camera angles.
Not trying to be defensive but it’s not meant to be an exciting sequence. I think over stylizing everything is more often than not a mistake.
@@JesseDriftwood I always hear, "The first 30 seconds is the most important in a video"...not a big thing, the overall concept of the video was legit.

When you said "Hi Dave!" at 5:33, I thought you were greeting me and just broke the fourth wall.
All Daves are Dave.
Great video. I have to admit, during the outro, I was waiting for you to back into something followed by a large crash and some cursing. LOL
