I inherited a 6-foot tall scragley robusta about 3 years ago. I tidied it up and propegated about 5 different pieces. Only one took and is now about 3 foot tall and I’m getting a new leaf almost every other week. By the way, I live in Chicago and this was my first attempt with a rubber plant/bush/tree. I’ve got 3 other plants that are over 25 years old. I’ve killed my asparagus fern at least a dozen times and it still keeps coming back. Love your videos!! Thanks much!

I’m sure that’s helped your channel. I knew I could come to your channel to find out how to prune my ficus robusta, well, except you haven’t pruned yours yet. But I think I got a good idea from this video. Best.😊
mr sheffield , i just found the tiniest ficus & im so happy!! it was on clarence too! idk why bc it’s perfectly fine. no pest either. thank you for the tips
My own experience has been that they are slow growing but reliable, easy to grow and propagate. I've had mine since about '02 and it sits in a bay window with plenty of light.
I bought one of these plants but didn't know it was a rubber plant until I looked it up. The great thing was it was actually divided in 4 stems in the pot so I repotted and got 4 separate plants. 4 for the price of one. Only 6 inches tall now and of the variegated variety, so I'm looking forward to watching them grow.
I have a variegated rubber tree in a pot outside on my verandah all year. It grows really fast in the Mediterranean climate where I live here in Australia. It's well known here that you don't plant them in the ground as you stated they grow into a very large tree. Also, they have very invasive roots capable of lifting concrete & damaging foundations.
Can you please share how low the temperatures drop in wintertime ? Because I also live in a Mediterranean climate but winterime temps can drop near 0 c and I read that ficus plants can't tolerate lower than 10 c
@@ramkishanbhagya8449 😥 I had a similar experience. I've learned a lot from this channel but the best tips were to get the moisture meter and to remove water accumulating in the bottom. A couple of my slow-growing plants were getting worse and worse over the last couple of years. Sadly, because I repotted them with soil that had fertilizer in it, I think it was too strong for them and it eventually killed them 😭 They were both plants that I had for 20 to 30 years! One of them (a rubber plant) I was able to save by taking cuttings from it and planting them in new soil that did not have fertilizer in it. I had to get it from a plant nursery. Because they are slow-growing it's hard to be sure how well they are doing, but so far a couple of cuttings have survived and seemed to mostly be doing well.
The green version (Robusta) is the easiest plant to propagate. Just take a leaf with an inch of stem and place into a jar of water. Roots will grow. Pot up. I love this plant so much, I'm propagating a number to put into the garden for the (short) summer for a "jungle" effect. I'm prepared to sacrifice them, because I know I can root a whole bunch of them quickly, but I'll bring them in and wash them off for the winter if they survive two or three months outdoors in Scotland. Tempted to get myself some of the other varieties too. I don't mind if they grow haphazardly - I just love the leaves and the fulness of them. They are definitely up there in the unfussy plant category.
So I just bought a ficus elastica in a tiny pot so he’s about 10 or 11 inches tall (off of the table, not from the soil) from a plant shop down my street and the shop owner told me that ficus elastica likes to stay relatively moist… It does not want to dry out between waterings because if it does, it won’t want to ever branch out. He showed me these little tiny light white dots above the little leaf stems on its main trunk stem and said that that is where branches will grow if you make sure to keep it moist :-) I took a picture of it today because I like to kind of take a picture of it again after a few months because I love seeing how much they’ve grown! Also, he said he waters daily! We both have south facing windows, so maybe that’s why?!
I have two rubber plants and just cut the stem on one plant to make it branch. So far, it looks like a new stem is forming but no other so far. Enjoy your video.
I like the dark green one better too. I always look at variegated plants and wonder if they're sick, but I'll still probably get myself different varieties just for the heck of it.
I bought the one with the yellow elastic tineke, even thought it was not labled as such. I bought it at Walmart for $20.00, I need to know how to take care of it, never had a rubber tree. I don't want to kill it, she is simply stunning and huge too, I've been looking for one for 2 years, glad I finally found one.
Interesting! My rubber tree puts out about one new leaf every month or two. I’ve been keeping the soil moist with a watering globe. It’s sitting about 4 feet away from a window and it’s doing fantastic
Just purchased my variegated rubber tree today so I came back to watch this video. How is yours doing?? Do you happen to have a private Facebook group all your plant buds can share things with each other

I’ve literally just repotted my ficus elastica robuster into a terracotta pot with one draining hole at the bottom, I don’t think it’s got much in the way of perlight type stuff in it. (I repotted as it roots were becoming visible and it’s lower leaves were drooping and yellowed and a few dropped off) Now watching this and some of your other vids I’m wondering if it’s going to be too wet? Should I repot into a plastic on with more drainage ? Thank you 🙏🏽
Hello, Mr. Sheffield! I just moved to a new place and got a rubber plant as a gift, some bottom leaves have been yellowing and one of them fell off. They are getting really good sun and I haven’t gotten to water it yet as it hasn’t been dry since the time I got it. Was wondering if it could be from transport, I did find webbing from (im guessing) spider mites but removed it immediately and killed some, or could it be overwatering from the previous owner as well? Thanks for the video by the way! Really helpful :))
A lesson learned, and a question: my rubber plant looking pretty miserable, so I checked the moisture using the meter yesterday, and it was dry in a couple of spots but I noticed when I pulled it out, the stem of the meter felt damp! I poked it around a couple of other spots and the water was way up! It’s in a large pot so I don’t know if that’s part of the problem, but in the future I will spot check a few different areas of soil especially in the larger pots. It’s extremely spindly and leggy so I was thinking of doing the cuttings like I’ve seen in one of your other video and repot the bulk of the plant in new soil. My general question is, the first time you’ve repotted, should you water from the top to allow water to get to the roots quickly and to help settle some of the soil? In my mind I keep thinking it’s the roots that are sucking up the water when watered from below, but is it actually the soil (in which case I would think bottom watering is OK even with newly potted plants that don’t have roots reaching down that far)? Thx!
Great video! Does this apply to Ficus Altissima as well? I have two, they are growing well, but all the new leaves are curly except a random one or two. Not browned, they look healthy, just curly… it’s very strange. All the old leaves look normal and more flat. 🤷🏻♂️
Help! I brought one of these home a few days ago from Lowe’s. I put it in a south facing window and did not water it. I noticed that the soil it came in contained very little perlite and was quite wet. I was a bit worried that it might not be well draining enough, but I figured it had growing in that soil for some time and looked beautiful. However, when I came home today, I found a brown spot on one of the top leaves on its edge. I am considering changing the soil to one with perlite in it. Am I over reacting? Is it just the trauma of being moved to my house? Will I hurt it more if I add perlite to the soil? Lol noob to the plant world. Advice appreciated. Don’t worry I won’t hold you responsible for the results.😂l
The south facing window might be too much sun for it. They prefer indirect light with a bit of sun. Changing the soil won’t harm it if you think it’s not very good. Have a look at the roots. Are any black and mushy. That’s root rot from overwatering and poor soil
Could you explain any more about what you mean at 08:10 about circling around the stem at the top? Im unsure what the problem is with mine but one of the 3 stems now has no leaves and has gone black and a bit soft at the top. Can I assume this is because its root bound?
MR Sheffield! HELP! I have a ficus elastica ruby, I took it to the bathroom to be watered, and I accidentally snapped the new growth. What do I do? Do I need to chop and prop now? Please advise.
Mine has grown super fast when placing into direct sunlight in front of an east/south window. You could watch it growing basically. I had to move it a little bit away and it instantly slowed down. I actually wanted a ficus tineke because of its colors but I do not have place with enough light anymore. It little bit bends toward one side because it's quite big. I have a stick in it but the plant is slowly getting bigger than the stick. Should I put a new one?
Hi I have a ficus elastica robusta with a single bare stem up to about 3 feet and lots of growth at the top with lots of lovely healthy leaves (it’s now becoming very too heavy and stem won’t be strong enough to support) -to get it to branch and become more bushy would I be able to cut off the top to the desired point near an old leaf node? The problem with this is that there will be no leaves left for photosynthesis/translocation. Will this kill the whole plant? Cutting above first leaf will still make it too tall and gangly. TIA ♥️
How can I strengthen the trunks? I have 3, all single trunk, no branches, potted together. All are putting out new growth like crazy. They range in size 3 to 4 ft tall above the soil line. The trunks are skinny and unless supported by dowels, they lean alarmingly to the side. Thank you!
Hi. Very nice explained thank you. Are these plants only for inside or can i put them in the balcony? My windows and balcony face west side (too much sun in summer😔). Thank you 🙏🏽
@@SheffieldMadePlants in Turkey 🇹🇷. This summer was really really very hot 🥵. I had to put some barriers ( pieces of cardboard) protecting my plants from direct sunlight.
I love my rubber plant so much and I did some mistakes in the beginning (last year). I never watered it until water came out but only like a few glasses every few weeks. I was scared that I would over water it at once. It grew super small leaves last year and there is no grow eversince. BUT now I water it through maybe all 3-4 weeks and basically all leaves are super wrinkly now. Also the stem became brown and patchy. Are the roots rotten? I'm lost
@@SheffieldMadePlants oh man I just took the plant out and the soil was dry and hard as stone. But not mushy at all. I removed the soil a bit but didn't untangle the core. I took some fresh soil and drowned that thing in water😂. I wonder how long it will take until I will see a result?
i have an Elastica Robusta and its very sensitive. when new leaves form and are still pointing upwards and touch each other that part of the leaf dies. in this case should i remove the damaged leaf or cut the dead parts? also the leaves dont feel thick like yours

I have a rubber plant just like the one on the left in your video. It was given to me by a 90+ year old lady when she moved. She had it for years! It’s all stem, however, with the lovely leaves on the end of the branches. The branches are also all over the place. It’s such a mess (cosmetically) but VERY healthy. What can I do to corral it again? If I cut the branches back, there will be nothing on the plant and it will looks just like sticks sticking out of the dirt. Would love any tips you have. Thank you.
Hey, i made a few mistakes and did a few things to save my plant from dying, would really appreciate your opinion on my plant and my decisions. Is there any possibility to write an email to you so i can send pictures?
I got a small rubber plant with 2 stems, have placed it near south facing window and the plant gets morning sunlight till 10.30am and indirect sunlight for the rest of the day. Initially the new leaves which came out were perfect, but off late the leaves on one of the stems are very damaged, they are incomplete and disfigured. Whereas the second steam is giving out healthy full leaves. What could be the problem, please help.

Do you have a video on ficus lyrata? Very popular here, usually called just "ficus" or "Indian fig". I try to search but didn't come across that particular variety. Thx!

@@SheffieldMadePlants that wasn't meant to be a insult but I could tell you were off a bit. But you have a really wonderful day today love your shows get such a kick out of you.
I got one online, when it arrived it was crammed into a small nursery pot so I moved it to a larger one. It originally had 5 leaves. One went black from the base up and came off, another fell off, so I have that in perlite. The very top leaf is quite limp and soft, whilst the bottom leaf is drooping. I checked the soil and it's not too wet, the roots are quite long, but not rootbound. I put it under a grow light and that caused further wilting to the top leaf. Any suggestions?
My rubber tree keeps loosing healthy looking green leaves. I lost the fourth leaf in about 2 months. Left with only three leaves on the stem but one already facing down and feel’s loose. I don’t know what to do. Could anyone help me with this please.
I've got this with my Tineke at the moment. Really not sure why though. All my others are fine but this one is slowly dying. Check the roots and see if anything is rotting. Other than that they really like lots of light

@@SheffieldMadePlants will do and thank you. I am really enjoying my plant journey and you’re a big part of that!
Thanks for the good information. How can I make the leaves of my Ficus Robusta bigger ?
More light will be the key.
@@SheffieldMadePlants Thanks 👍👍
I have the green variety and the leaves are small hasn't grown much. I moved it to the window July but it grown so slow 🐌
If it’s got light then check the roots. Might be rootbound.
Could you explain any more about what you mean at 08:10 about circling around the stem at the top? Im unsure what the problem is with mine but one of the 3 stems now has no leaves and has gone black and a bit soft at the top. Can I assume this is because its root bound?
It’s pretty rare indoors to be fair but when the roots circle around the plant it can potentially strangle the crown
My rubber plant has very thin stalks. I just bought it 3 weeks ago. Will the stalks get thicker?
Over time it should yes
MR Sheffield! HELP! I have a ficus elastica ruby, I took it to the bathroom to be watered, and I accidentally snapped the new growth. What do I do? Do I need to chop and prop now? Please advise.
Tidy up the cut and prop the cutting. Will grow a new stem
Thank you. @@SheffieldMadePlants
Sounds like it needs a bigger thicker stick
Hi I have a ficus elastica robusta with a single bare stem up to about 3 feet and lots of growth at the top with lots of lovely healthy leaves (it’s now becoming very too heavy and stem won’t be strong enough to support) -to get it to branch and become more bushy would I be able to cut off the top to the desired point near an old leaf node? The problem with this is that there will be no leaves left for photosynthesis/translocation. Will this kill the whole plant? Cutting above first leaf will still make it too tall and gangly. TIA ♥️
If it’s a healthy plant then new stems should grow but I do like to leave at least 1 leaf
@@SheffieldMadePlants this is really helpful thank you! Fingers crossed it does well
Might take some insurance cuttings though!
I don't water my ficus, I spray them by misting every other day. It looks beautiful and perfect like a plastic decoration
How is that going today?
So nice Rubber Tree...🥰💕
👍
Thank you for information
You bet!
How to make the leaves spread like that? Coz mine are mostly vertical
Hi, my rubber plant roots are showing on top of the potted compact soil. Can I just add compost and perlite on top of the soil in the pot?
Probably better to leave them or cut them off. Not a great idea to make the soil line higher
Thanks for the tips
You bet!
How can I strengthen the trunks? I have 3, all single trunk, no branches, potted together. All are putting out new growth like crazy. They range in size 3 to 4 ft tall above the soil line. The trunks are skinny and unless supported by dowels, they lean alarmingly to the side. Thank you!
Cutting them back will do that
Hi. Very nice explained thank you. Are these plants only for inside or can i put them in the balcony? My windows and balcony face west side (too much sun in summer😔). Thank you 🙏🏽
Where do you live?
@@SheffieldMadePlants in Turkey 🇹🇷. This summer was really really very hot 🥵. I had to put some barriers ( pieces of cardboard) protecting my plants from direct sunlight.
Can ı put these plants in balcony☺️
@@serapugurlugil9214 yeah sounds like it’s warm enough
I love my rubber plant so much and I did some mistakes in the beginning (last year). I never watered it until water came out but only like a few glasses every few weeks. I was scared that I would over water it at once. It grew super small leaves last year and there is no grow eversince. BUT now I water it through maybe all 3-4 weeks and basically all leaves are super wrinkly now. Also the stem became brown and patchy. Are the roots rotten? I'm lost
Have you checked them out?
@@SheffieldMadePlants oh man I just took the plant out and the soil was dry and hard as stone. But not mushy at all. I removed the soil a bit but didn't untangle the core. I took some fresh soil and drowned that thing in water😂. I wonder how long it will take until I will see a result?
@@manonxg the only way is up now 😁
i have an Elastica Robusta and its very sensitive. when new leaves form and are still pointing upwards and touch each other that part of the leaf dies. in this case should i remove the damaged leaf or cut the dead parts? also the leaves dont feel thick like yours
Probably cut the leaf out. Are they in good light?
@@SheffieldMadePlants i live in Qatar and temperatures can get quit hot in the summer so its in my room near the closed window which would give sun rays on the plant during sun rise . i keep my AC on almost all day on 20 degrees celsius.
Just re- watching. Rich, you got to laugh at me. I swear not two of these new plants want to get watered on the same day. lol Peace.
I’m getting a few new leaves almost every 2 weeks or so across different stems. Is that good?
That's a good growth rate 👍
I have a rubber plant just like the one on the left in your video. It was given to me by a 90+ year old lady when she moved. She had it for years! It’s all stem, however, with the lovely leaves on the end of the branches. The branches are also all over the place. It’s such a mess (cosmetically) but VERY healthy. What can I do to corral it again? If I cut the branches back, there will be nothing on the plant and it will looks just like sticks sticking out of the dirt. Would love any tips you have. Thank you.
You can cut it back like I did here
ua-cam.com/video/AKUgS9JxtKI/v-deo.html
It will develop new healthy branches.
My rubber tree is like 6-7 ft tall. It has a lot of branches, so I tie them up. I've ran out of room to give it support now. It grows like a weed. 😳

Leaf deformity is usually a watering problem - too dry or too wet. How's the soil?
@@SheffieldMadePlants It was too wet when i repotted it last. Usually water it once the top 2 inches is dry, but it was in a plastic pot and may b that retains water for long. When i repotted it, it was quite wet.
Very nice looking rubber tree
Thanks

my Robusta is showing signs of distress...not sure why....has grown several new leaves in the past couple of months but now it looks browned off on 3 of the lower leaves.. and 3 little leaves at the bottom have indeed dropped off..............any ideas to make him well again
Check the soil to see if the roots look healthy
i cannot quite hear it;
Do you say @ 03:12 mid afternoon sun might scorch the leaves? or should the plant get mid afternoon sun? (for tineke)
Might scorch. Morning can be good

He really needs to hold back his enthusiasm for these rubber plants.

Great video 👍 how do you clean the leaves?
Water and a cloth or an occasional shower
Do you have a video on ficus lyrata? Very popular here, usually called just "ficus" or "Indian fig". I've had one for decades that I often cannot believe is still living as many times I thought it was at death's door. I would like to make a happier life for it, though. I try to search but didn't come across that particular variety. Thx!
Yep 👍

@@SheffieldMadePlants my bad, in doing my web search I attached the wrong botanical name to it. The plant I'm thinking of is "weeping fig tree" or "Ficus benjamina". The gracile houseplant with leaves approximately 2 in. and pointy at each end.
@@lindasue8719 ah ok. I was struggling with that plant until I realised I wasn't giving it enough light and water.
@@SheffieldMadePlants excellent! I'm definitely on a mission now! LOL I won't be without the new moisture meter, and another light lamp just arrived today.
Just from the first time this week using the moisture meter and watering appropriately, plus dusting the plants they are already looking better!
Picking up some stakes today, and I think that will make the plants that need them happier.

I bought my burgundy rubber today and mistakenly broke 1 leaf in the middle when I was wiping it. Do I need to cut it off completely?
If it’s ugly then cut it off. Keeping it on won’t do any harm though.
@@SheffieldMadePlants Thank you, I think I will keep it.
I noticed my tenike started producing only white leaves. Maybe it’s receiving too much light?
Hmm 🤔 maybe. Does it look ugly?
Good morning you look so serious .🤠

I got one online, when it arrived it was crammed into a small nursery pot so I moved it to a larger one. It originally had 5 leaves. One went black from the base up and came off, another fell off, so I have that in perlite. The very top leaf is quite limp and soft, whilst the bottom leaf is drooping. I checked the soil and it's not too wet, the roots are quite long, but not rootbound. I put it under a grow light and that caused further wilting to the top leaf. Any suggestions?
Was it shipped through cold weather?
@@SheffieldMadePlants I got it in February
@@cherie7100 sounds like it's suffering from cold shock in transportation. Give it as much light as possible and hopefully it will bounce back
@@SheffieldMadePlants Will a grow light work or does it need natural light? I put it under the grow light for a few hours and the top leaf wilted.

Which would be better if you only have a north or south facing window
South but don’t let it have too much sun

Which type of rubbber tree grow faster?
A green one because it will have the most chlorophyll
My rubber tree keeps loosing healthy looking green leaves. I lost the fourth leaf in about 2 months. Left with only three leaves on the stem but one already facing down and feel’s loose. I don’t know what to do. Could anyone help me with this please.
I've got this with my Tineke at the moment. Really not sure why though. All my others are fine but this one is slowly dying. Check the roots and see if anything is rotting. Other than that they really like lots of light
Can you grow them in Leca?
Yep. Not tried leca myself but you can

That bottom shoot should grow pretty fast and than it will be the two branches your looking for....
True, but it would see a bit lop sided. Cutting the stem in the same place gives me an excuse to propagate and have more tinekes in the house!
