I was there that day with my family, tuned into his frequency on our scanners. Very eerie hearing Richard calling for him after the wreck with no answer, Dale always responded to him.

Kenny handled that situation the best anyone could have. Such a sad day for NASCAR. Dale was truly one of the best, if not the best, drivers of all time. He was destine to drive a race car.

Greg I’m not sure I understand you. Do you mean if you have over a million $$ you can’t be blue collar? I’m blue collar or at least I think I am. If you combine my 401k and savings account I’m over that million mark and I didn’t get it sitting behind a desk or wearing a suit and tie every day its steel toe boots and a hard hat every day for the last 24 years. So I guess my question to you would be what color should my collar be?

It is hard for me to revisit the events of February 18, 2001. I had followed Dale Earnhardt for almost all of my NASCAR viewing. On this day, I almost lost my brother, then I witnessed the loss of my favored driver. That was my birthday present that year. Almost lost my brother early that morning then caught the last 10 laps to witness Earnhardt lose his life doing what he loved. I still remember it all like it was yesterday. RIP ol' Ironhead, see you on the other side.

I was a 16 year old boy when Dale died. He was my childhood hero, along side my father. Like many folks, my life changed that day. I'm 35 now. The pain of losing a true hero was overwhelming for me. I'm 35, and I swear that I've thaught of this guy in some way or form on every single day since he died when I was 16. Even if it was for a few fleeting moments. He was a true influence to never give up and except that your not perfect in life, to strive to be better and better all the time. We need more real heroes nowadays like that.

Still hurts my heart and leaves a lump in my throat. I was fairly new to NASCAR and watched that race on television. It was hurtful because even though I was new to the sport I already knew that Dale Earnhardt Sr was legend and pioneer for the motorsport community. Magnify that pain by 10 to know that Dale Earnhardt Jr was there when it all unfolded. R.I.P. Dale...love and respect always and forever

i agree Isabelle. i will never forget that day. i was in bnoc, (the army's non-commissioned officer course) at the time, and at the end of the race, me and my buddies all thought dale would be ok. we went out for dinner after the race, then found out a couple of hours later at our barracks that he had been killed. i think i cried just about ever day for a week straight. i was an army ranger at the time, and i am still not ashamed of my crying. while watching this video, i had one more long cry for dale earnhardt, my all time favorite driver ever. i can image the intimidator making jesus nervous right now in heaven when he sees that black #3 in the rear view mirror on sundays.

As a real man some things just go unsaid for a reason,! For example like how Mr Ken Schrader has never publically gone into detail as to what he witnessed that terrible moment, because he is a real man with respect and compassion for his friend and his friends family.
And there is no good reason for him to describe or, relive or want anyone else to know how that moment felt The hurt in his eyes alone tells more then enough then anyone with a shred of decentze would want to know and Ken Schrader's fatherly instincts has protected Dale Sr.'s children and his friendship to help prorect Dale Sr.'s legacy. Thank you for carrying that burden Mr Shrader your not only a true racers racer you represent how a true gentleman should act during a difficult moment.

The reason this crash was way more serious than it should have been was because Dale was the last driver to wear an open face helmet combined with Dale's seating position which was very prone compared to anyone else's. Due the way the seat was mounted one of the anchors of the five point system failed and Dale's chin contacted the steering wheel. When Larry McReynolds was Dale's crew chief the previous season Larry refused to allow Dale to participate in final practice at Talledega because he deemed the seat belt anchors to be unsafe. He orchestrated all his moves to get his team into positions number 1, 2, and 3, and decided to take the 3 position because he was the most aggressive driver on the team.
