Finally a director who actually says why the films are important to him. Most just say I love this one and shove it in the bag.
I wonder if Cristian has ever considered a side hustle doing ASMR..
Right?! I'm interested in his thoughts while simultaneously fighting a nap thanks to his voice.
I know what you mean! I watched his interview on the criterion version of 4 months 3 weeks and 2 days. I felt myself drifting off to sleep often
he handles this much more reverently than most...
I was just thinking that. Such care and respect went into his choices and the memories connected with them.
Hes grateful and humble.
I love how he’s actually picked them out before the video starts so he has more time to explain the significance of these movies.

The great thing about criterion closet videos is not only getting introduced to films & filmmakers through the host's picks, but also getting introduced to new filmmakers through them being the host of the video.
I’m happy someone chose Dekalog! Really amazing collection!
he's got amazing taste. i like this guy more than ever.
I'm romanian and I'm glad we have a great director like him.
How is he "great"?, and why would you be glad for your country's mediocrity?
@@nl3064 I'm sorry, but where are you from?
@@mashamashenka3346 What does that matter? I'm sorry for the aggressive tone and belligerence, nothing against you, it's just that every other comment I see is people praising those who haven't really added anything.
Sorry, I just noticed it's a different commentor, but the point still stands.
@@nl3064 it matters because you mentioned his country's "mediocrity". I was interested in where were you from, because I wanted to know if you country is well placed.
i always see you guys posting pictures on your instagram of so many people doing these closet videos but you never upload them like do you think that they didnt say anythink intersting? because we will watch everything
lukas decker they upload one per month. I don't know why that is, to keep a steady flow? To edit them properly? Anyway, that seems to be the pattern
lukas isn't kidding. ALL of them, Criterion. ALL. OF. THEM.
The pics are taken when the filmmakers are in the Criterion offices, usually to tidy up any loose ends (or record new supplemental materials, approve transfers, etc.) with a future release, but the closet videos themselves are posted on YT (usually) in tandem with the street/release dates of the physical discs (i.e. Isabelle Huppert with The Piano Teacher, Alexander Payne with Election, and Mingiu with Beyond the Hills & Graduation), which is why there is sometimes a big gap between the two.
lukas decker Still waiting on the John Waters video...
Legend, 4 months 3 weeks 2 days is incredible
Such a brutal, beautiful film.
How is it "incredible"? It's a perfectly standard, common, indistinguishable movie like any other.
@@nl3064 I'm Romanian and I couldn't agree more. Romanian cinema during the last 20 years was absolute shit.
@@nl3064 You don't know anything about movies man ! If i'll give you Stalker or Popiol i diament your brain will melt you novice.4 months 3 weeks and 2 days is one of the best movie of all time, even Roger Ebert said that. You didn't live in the comunist period to understand it !
@ Cata I am a huge fan of both Stalker and Ashes and Diamonds and have seen both movies multiple times (and neither is Romanian, so I don't see why you brought those up). Also, I looked up your claim. While Ebert did give 4 Months 4/4 stars, nowhere in his review does he ever say it's "one of the best movies of all time" - hell, he didn't even put it on his "Great Movies" list. And while I respect Ebert, he was not the final word on what's notable and what isn't.
Also just because something is personally relatable to you doesn't make it good.
He is so soft spoken
Make a video with PTA
How could you not mention that he is the director of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days ?
Because no one's ever really heard of it, nor him for that matter (and yes, I've seen it).
@@nl3064 What is your problem?
@@linusfotograf no problem. He asked a question and I answered.
@@nl3064 You answered with a factually incorrect statement.
@@maximumoccupancy Fine. Relatively very few have heard of him or it. Satisfied?
That story about Dennis Hopper. Beautiful!
This is great but where's Wong Kar Wai?!
did the John Waters one ever get uploaded? I recall seeing a photo but I must have missed the video.
Wong Kar Wai won't enter the Criterion closet until he's in the mood.
And take him away from a set making his next masterpiece? For shaaaaaaaaaame you suggest such a thing sir!
how does this in any way relate to Mungiu?
WKW is god
BEYOND THE HILLS is a truly a great movie. I'm a big fan of you, Sir.
The first closet video where I own every pick!
We want Wong kar wai
He needs to get in the mood.
beside from being such a great director, he is also an amazing festival organizer :)
Imagine being able to grab the Bergman box set for free when that's out...
Bicycle thieves is masterpiece
SWEETIE ALERT
One of my favorite director😍😍😍
度昀昊 what's your favorite film from him?
EMm 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is my favorite
度昀昊 I've heard it's very good. I have to see it!
EMm This film just incredible!
Very nice interview. Thank you CC!
Sure he loves Kieslowski.
One of the best closets. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is one of the greatest films this century. I can't wait to finally see Beyond the Hills & Graduation.
ZozZy Bacalaureat (Graduation) was fantastic. I’ll be watching Beyond the Hills tonight (just got it during the Criterion Flash Sale), and I’ll buy 4 Months the day it comes out. Very impressed with his style. And it’s great to see a world class director from Romania. I look forward to seeing much more from Mungiu.
How is that perfectly common, normal, standard, plain movie like any other "one of the greatest of this century?" I'm sorry for the abrasive tone, but I would genuinely like for you to explain your basis for saying that.
@@nl3064 You keep saying you are sorry but why keep questioning people's love for this film? It IS a great film and you don't like it, so what?
@@linusfotograf I'm sorry for coming off aggressively and my abrasive tone, I know it turns a lot of people off and rubs them the wrong way, but I get really annoyed when people praise mediocrity, and if they like it, that's one thing, but it grates me when people say shit like "one of the best movies of the century" and other gross hyperboles. It's not great. It's mediocre, regardless of your or my enjoyment or lack thereof.
N L Art is not something that can be determined to be good or bad. It’s not a science.
Blood simple is a great film
His face kinda reminds me of my math teacher :)
Soft spoken KING!
I like his choices and the whys.
Great D Hopper story.
"I became a fan of these people... these otherworldly beings..."
This is exactly what we needed, thank you!
This is the best Closet Picks I've ever seen.
Can you guys please invite Tarantino, Lynch, Iñaritu, Lee for a video please. It’ll be interesting to hear stories and their choices from your closet!
This
Finally... I've seen all the films from someone's picks.

Arrow Dekalog >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Criterion Dekalog.
crazymaner2003 I went for the Arrow. (sorry Criterionites!)
A foreshadowing of perhaps a 4 months release. Holding my breath.
Imagine if someone only grabs Armageddon.
Thats the way it should always be, name the film, explain a bit why, next!
:)
Jonathan Jourdenais Nahhh I like it where you feel you're there with them, like browsing in a shop, and they grab something 'oh yeah great...(bag!) All I need to see is the box or hear the title and my brain squirts dopamine.
If I was in the closet with this guy going blah blah blah blah blah blah I'd just be looking along the shelves going yeah, yeah......really?.....uhuh, ohhhh yes Partie De Campagne! Gotta have that.
Amazing Hopper story!
A Legend!
How?
WHERE'S LIV TYLER?????
Is criterion going to cover anime?
We want Victor Salva in the closet! Who's with me?!
Shane Carruth, Wong Kar Wai or Christopher Doyle please.
Why in the hell would they get Shane Carruth, who (yes I've seen Primer - very neat concept, terrible movie) is a complete nobody just because you like him?
@@nl3064 Strange response. First, Upstream color was also quite acclaimed and Carruth has also received compliments by other, well-known directors like Steven Soderbergh and Rian Johnson. I doubt he's a nobody to the people at Criterion or the film lovers who watch this stuff.
And why would it be a problem that someone wants to see a director in the closet that they LIKE? Would you want people in the closet that you dislike? Maybe you would and it might make sense in certain cases, but generally, I would assume, people want directors whose films they enjoy in the closet. Not everbody in the closet is a legend of film history like Agnes Varda or Anna Karina. Some are still early in their career - Sean Baker was in the closet before The Florida Project - and some I wouldn't personally consider to be great artists. But I have rarely seen a closet video that I didn't enjoy. Carruth, I'm convinced, would be interesting, too. I think it might only happen, though, if he manages to make a third film.
More women, please! 51% of the population, and way less than 10% of Criterion Closet. Come on, Criterion, you can do better!
You can still appreciate the thoughts, comments and opinion from a man. Can't you?
Terry Ebinger
There are few women who are directors and also they are not so talented and famous.
I am sorry but that´s a FACT. I am not saying that woman can´t do the job because they are quialified enough but they need to put to work and create a name in this industry. Then you´ll see a lot of woman here, just look at Isabelle Huppert for example, she is a star in Europe and in a lot of countries because she is really GOOD actress
But do they make 51% of the industry? You missed a vital piece of information.
sorry, this one is dull
I haven't seen any of his films, but he seems like a promising director. However, listening to him talk I almost fell asleep, very uncharismatic.
