When Winona's May Welland destroys Daniel Day Lewis' Newland Archer with nothing more than the sharing of good news, her mask never drops for a second and we see how powerful an innocent character can really be. Winona is one of the greats!
One of the few remaining Winona films I have yet to see... Not sure why I always seem to forget about that one... BUT, not any longer, thanks to this comment and subsequent replies.
One thing I can say for Winona more than other young actresses nowadays is she really knows her film history and has very good taste in cinema and has respect for the art. Even when she was a young actress in her 20's in the 1990's she seemed to have good taste and work with the top directors on more sophisticated projects than most and many period pieces. She also is a big rock music fan and has very good taste in that area as well from interviews I have seen with her. I enjoy the episodes where people have respect for the Criterion Closet.
It's never going to happen, but if ever I start to feel my love of cinema fading, watching Winona here would be a great way to put me back on track again. Wonderful choices, and her passion for her picks, and the medium in general, is so real and undeniable. It's so refreshing to see from someone who's been in the Hollywood mill for so long. She seems like such an earnest, heartfelt human being! And everyone, go watch After Life- and, hell, Koreeda's whole filmography while you're at it- as soon as you can.

If she made a youtube channel talking about movies and she made weekly or monthly videos, I would subscribe. I didn't know she was so interesting and passionate about film. She always seemed so quiet and reserved and private. I'm glad she did this.
The movie recommendations are always interesting, but what I love about this series the most, is the enthusiasm and energy as each person talks about the movies they picked and why.
I loved "After Life!" The cast was so great it was like watching a documentary taking place in heaven. "Au revoir enfants" was the first french film I saw in high school. Anyway, Winona is truly amazing and we're so lucky to have her sharing her art with us.
What a wonderful guest to have in the closest. I aways appreciate the guests who go to the effort to really inform the viewer. To do so without arrognce but with such a serene dignity, humilty and almost a sweetness, this was one of the very best. Winonoa Ryder in the closest could be a movie within itself. Most guests are a pleasure to watch, a minoirty are rather smug and pious, but when it coms to grace and generosity of spirit this may well be my favourite CC guest review yet. The fact she picked some lesser known greats was a bonus too.

@@Maialeen ... over forty years, and I still don't find her a particularly well person. It appears, every film she's recommended here, has neurotic women starring in them - all nine of them - through Cassavetes wife, Gena Rowlands - Woman on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown - to the female characters in Jim Jarmusch's film, Down by Law (1986), and relating to the mental harangue of the minorities of 1969's, The Learning Tree - not one single Afro-American character, not under the intense lens of its glaringly paranoid and judgemental microscope. Every example of her neurosis is laid out at our feet as to the victim-hood of your own entrapment - to the derision you wish to apply to her one-dimensional acting - her delusional, one-dimensional persona, that did poor study in putting these films together as an exercise in deflection and bargaining for fanfare, than to channel the depths of ones acting and film literature soul, which, I'm assured, never existed in the first place. @@postmodernrecycler Only recently got round to watching it, and I absolutely concur.
One of the few remaining Winona films I have yet to see... Not sure why I always seem to forget about that one... BUT, not any longer, thanks to this comment and subsequent replies.
I totally see at least one more Oscar nomination for her. You’re the best Winona! ♥️
Hi , Winona. I love the Criterion Collection. Great picks . You were wonderful in Dracula. Hope you had fun.
It's so pleasing to watch her talking about movies! She's so passionate, such a great actor!
She still has that same beauty from her young age. She has aged like fine wine ❤.
OMG. Winona Ryder. What a legend! She is so good in everything that she does.
You can really tell what a person by their film selection. Winona Ryder is such a beautiful soul.
love to see her so nerdy about films, also her voice is just so beautiful ? one of my favorite actors
She is a true original; totally relatable, timeless and an iconoclast all at once.
A star in the truest sense. The history of cinema on this woman is SO impressive. She has weathered some storms and remained delightful throughout.
How she shoplifts with such grace is amazing
@@sidvicious332 go eat your food scraps. Your enormous need for attention is getting kind of boring.
She’s so passionate about her craft I love listening to her
Someone else said it on twitter and it is true. Actors that are passionate about cinema have so much more aura than actors that don’t.
I have not seen this lady for ages. I am so glad to see her and that she has not had her face chopped up.
I love this woman. So glad to see a resurgence in her career these past few years.
I always loved Winona Ryder. ❤
She did an awesome job in A Scanner Darkly, couldn't ask for a better casting of her character.
I’ve been waiting for this one omg Winona is iconic!! I’m so happy to see her still thriving in her career. She’s one of the good ones. Her success has been nothing but a delight for me to witness over the years. Truly one of the finest actresses to ever exist, and definitely a favorite of mine. She knows exactly what she’s doing with her craft. Simply talented and undeniably humble. There’s no one like her. She’s so precious, and I love her quirky energy. We must protect this woman at all costs 😭❤️
You forgot to mention the MOST important aspect about her: She's human, like ALL of us. Not a goddess.
And a shoplifter
@@JV-ll1cuget over it. It's a complex situation for many, if not most. It's not like she needed to...she was not well and struggling. Please try to have some empathy. I had a mate who was once so in the "up" swing of BD they walked out of a store with four hats on. Winona admitted what she had done and was able to get help, luckily for her.
Mental health conditions are no joke, not even for stars. Think about what Britney was dealing with. No-one wants to be subjected to a merciless public gaze.
I am so excited right now! I am honored to share a birthday with you, Winona!
me too!
Me too!
Me to!
She shares a birth year with my Mother
I have her birthday too! October 29th!!! (Scorpios unite!)
That little laugh and "There's an expression all the kids use..." - And I thought I couldn't adore this woman any deeper. Thank you. Any chance to see my favorite actress is an absolute treat.
Winona has been making a steady comeback in the last 6-7 years and honestly really happy that she’s back on the big screen
I love her so much. I love how she is also talking quietly like she is in a library.
This is one of the best criterion closer vids. Obscure pics and you can tell how much she loves these movies. I love her
She’s been making me fall in love over and over again my whole life. Solid picks. Highly recommend them all.
We are glad to have you there and that you share your tastes and your love for what you do. Thank you for the visit and may you continue to be so splendid. A hug from Spain.
Winona, We need parts two and three of your Closet Picks! Actually, how about once a week? Tim from Syracuse
If she made a youtube channel talking about movies and she made weekly or monthly videos, I would subscribe. I didn't know she was so interesting and passionate about film. She always seemed so quiet and reserved and private. I'm glad she did this.
Aww Winona is such a gem!💎🥰👌🏻
My childhood just squealed with delight to learn from the beloved and amazing Winona Ryder. Mmm mm, girl, you got your own Gena vibe. We see you ❤❤❤
this closet format is genius. and so is AFTER LIFE
The movie recommendations are always interesting, but what I love about this series the most, is the enthusiasm and energy as each person talks about the movies they picked and why.
I could watch these all day. Glad I discovered this channel
I love to see actors with taste. ❤
I loved "After Life!" The cast was so great it was like watching a documentary taking place in heaven. "Au revoir enfants" was the first french film I saw in high school. Anyway, Winona is truly amazing and we're so lucky to have her sharing her art with us.
I wish I still had my “Free Winona“ shirt from the 90s 🌲 maybe I can get one made 😍😍😍
Y Que still makes them! It's on Vermont in Los Angeles but you can get it on their website 🩷
You can. It's easy.
This is like the 4th interview I have seen with Winona in the last couple of days, after years of niltch!!! More Winona, please, she is delightful
Love Winona so much!!! She has no idea how much she’s loved.
Certain faces just bring me back to my childhood. For so many people Winona Ryder was the 90's, more than anyone.
Very cool list too.
Clicked so fast. 😄 What a legend and inspiration. 😌
I love how down to earth she is when talking about her love for the films she loves. We all are film connoisseurs.
Ms. Ryder, as a guy who grew up watching your movies while playfully telling my mom “who cares? She’s hott” whenever she asked, “How can you hear what she’s saying? The volume is too low.” your free to say more because your still freakin awesome ;) 😎 And stay healthy!! We need your presence in today’s movies
Don't worry. You'll get her back one day, Johnny. ;)
Great picks! Winona is, always was, and always will be the coolest. Also how great what she said about watching Gena as a child. She must’ve been so thrilled to have starred with her in their Night on Earth segment ♥️
I didn’t think I could love her anymore than I already did and then at 1:36 she picks up the Cassavetes collection ❤
It should be no surprise that she has immaculate taste
I adore Winona, she's in her early 50's now, and still looks radiant. I love that newer generations are being introduced to her via "Beetlejuice 2" and "Stranger Things."
Wow I thought she was in her 40s still. Looks great!
“Newer generations” are still being shown Heathers and the original Beetlejuice and edward scissorhands 😅 worry not
She's the reason I even bothered to watch Stranger Things, and I love her character in it. 😊
Literally seems like one of the most genuine and humble people in Hollywood
I love that this vid just makes me feel that is genuinely a rather cool and interesting person. I mean I always thought she was but this shows that it is not just a mask she puts on, she truly is wonderful
Maybe I’m getting old but watching Winona rider put on her glasses is one of the hottest things I’ve ever seen
She purposefully did that to distract you in order to steal the movies
@sidvicious332 How many more times are you gonna try this same joke in the comment section? I get once maybe, but multiple attempts? She was suffering some sort of mental health crisis back then. Depression among other things, and overprescription of medication I hear. I'm glad she's thriving. This lady never hurt anyone except herself when she wasn't well. Over 20 years ago. You can find more deserving people to copy paste corny jokes about.
@@sidvicious332 bruh, it's really pathetic at this point for you
@@sidvicious332 Nice, you're just in time for the turn of the century. Kudos.
"The sound of my Fathers typewriter, and the sound of my mothers footsteps", sends me screaming off of this comment thread, trying to quell with my hands - my head has spontaneously combusted ...
"There's an expression that kids use: if you know you know." I love you so much, Winona!
