I've been enjoying Iron Rain, as it's different enough to keep it's identity but it still feels enough like EDF to me. Heck, I'd say Iron Rain does some things better than 5. I fell in love with EDF 2017 partly because the game was so straightforward, you load in a level, it starts, you shoot the baddies, boom, you're done. 5 has several levels where characters chat back and forth for what seems like forever (looking at you Turning Point) before the level proper actually starts, and don't get me started about the tutorial mission I've had to play over and over again in pursuit of the platinum trophy. That's very true, although there is a reason behind it. The strength of enemies in 4.1 changes depending on how many players are present when the mission loads. Of course, games have been allowing for dynamic difficulty tweaks on the fly with drop-in gameplay for years, so it isn't like it would be impossible to design and balance such a system. "Heavy regulation from the hardware maker" likely refers to SCEA in specific who typically had much more stringent ideas about what games were allowed on the platform than their Japanese and European counterparts, issues with SCEA is why Yakuza 2 took years to reach America, Sega didn't want to pay to dub it but at that point in the PS2's lifespan you couldn't release a game with only a Japanese voice track. This attitude would continue on PSP where SCEA kept things like Suikoden 1 + 2 collection out of America because of a requirement of "at least 20% new content" whatever that means in such a context. In EDF's case SCEA likely had a vague guideline about games not reflecting badly on the platform in a technical sense. These kinds of guidelines are why European PS2 owners got a lot of simple 2000 games, but also why they got bottom of the barrel barely functional licensed trainwrecks like PS2 Garfield and Home Alone
When the producer made this comment, I asked him about Katamari Damashii. not to argue, but how in the hell does EDF2017 not have a hero or a villain? Storm1 is the hero this space war needed, which is who you are. the most important evidence to this is the final level, the hardest of the fights. if it drags out long enough the commanding officer on the radio and his assistant make mention of how everybody fight there is basically dead, then they realize that Storm1 is still out there fighting *ALONE* and kicking as much ass as he can. and the villain is the big death star Mothership, it even does the main villain thing of showing up throughout the game to taunt you after having just dropped off more stuff to keep you at bay until you make it stay in one place and fight you with everything it has. and in EDF4 (2025) the story makes mention of Storm1 actually being among your ranks in the last mission, fighting another threat you dont have time to deal with during that mission. if i am remembering correctly.
I'm not a big multiplayer-guy, but I've spent 300hours with EDF5's Co-op so far. The EDF community is the nicest online bunch I've ever met. Some dude really helped me get to the cruicial 70% mark, asking which missions I need, another guy showed me how to farm high level weapons. And just when you think triggering that "EDF"-shoutout or the singing via the com-system gets boring, someone else does it and you can't help but join the yelling and shouting. This series deserves a 100m$ budget and a 5 million player-base, because it's positive, innocent fun.
@SSFF - There *is* a physical copy for EDF 5 that you can order from Play-Asia. The Multi-language release comes with English and Korean language options!
Hello, SSFF! This is Annedak the Dragon from northern Wyoming. Being an "Earth Defense Force" fan myself, I would like to give this video the biggest Thumbs Up there is, especially considering this video has begun with looking at the now cult-classic "EDF 2017" for the Xbox 360. The EDF Deploys, brother!
2:14 I think he's referring to Sony's old policy that if a game comes out in the West it MUST have an English dub, but at the time Sandlot didn't really have the funds for it, and why the eventual localizations removed all troop chatter and rebranded to kind of circumvent that. (Plus Sony laxxed on that in later years, but it's also why we ended up getting the goofy English Yakuza dub).
I got through EDF 4.1 and 5 last year and last month with my roommate, respectively. They're the best and worst experience you can have in gaming, simultaneously, and I wouldn't trade my time with them for the world.
Yeah I think consoles are not ready to really support a narrative version of EDF that will appeal to the casual crowd. Might have been better if Iron Rain was a next gen launch.
For those who are put off due to there being no physical release for this or EDF 5 you can always get the Asia release for both games that include English on disc!
Anyone else here because of the Xbox free game? I thought it looked cool and found this review! I've been watching SSFF for a while but I guess I missed this video. This game looks really fricking cool!
EDF 5 has way more world building than you give credit. Especially when it comes to certain characters and military units, and then the progression of things getting worse and worse. The Grim Reapers, the Blue Jackets, the Exterminators and then there's Sarge and his squad. They're all recognizable. Also the massive set pieces in EDF 5s missions more than make up for the lack of map variety, and the options you have in how you approach some of the missions makes up for it as well. And the AI can be extremely helpful and in some missions are almost a necessity, and can be a major bonus in later waves if you keep them alive. Both mechanized and ones on foot. And the fact that you can amass yourself a small army and go crazy really makes you feel like you are fighting alongside the EDF and only where it is appropriate does it make you feel like it's you against the entire alien army. There is a distinctive, "without your help, they die and without their help, you die" dynamic in a good number of the missions. It makes it feel like a more complete EDF experience than Iron Rain by quite a margin. Plus... I mean... You can sing along with your entire squad. That right there is a big thing in itself. Can't do that in Iron Rain. I guess what I am getting at is that Iron Rain lacks that feeling of being part of an entire army. It feels pretty lonely. Even though it comes down to you towards the end, it doesn't feel that way up until that point where it's supposed to.
EDF 2025 is backwards compatible on Xbox One. You didn't cover how much better the Xbox 360 version of EDF 2025 runs on Xbox One backwards compatibility.
The Super Best Friends got me into this series. If you like (or in the mood for) dumb, sort of repetitive fun along the lines of an Omega-Force Warriors game, definitely check this series out.
I like to think EDF is just the fun parts of Anime where the OP main character just slaughters hundreds of nameless goons Also I want to say EDF insect Armageddon was my first time playing in EDF game, I didn’t complete it but it sure was fun and I have yet to see an enemy in any other game that replicates the terror and pure intimidation of those giant Mark 2 (it’s been a while so I can’t really remember the name) They were just awesome
I got both games on Steam. I'm not digging Iron Rain too much for some reason, but I've now put in over 700 hours in EDF5. My favorite class is the Fencer largely because of their speed/mobility, and 2 sets of weapons lets you manage almost anything in the level. I find that jackhammer/flamethrower combo works great, and either gatling guns or the cannons for long range attacks. But I love that the other classes also change the level/difficulty of a mission a lot. Air raiders are less effective in underground missions, but excel in outside areas.
This is pretty much a game I know I would enjoy playing, then I look at one picture of a swarm of giant spiders jumping and I remember why it's a hands off affair and my admiration can and should be a distant one sided affair.
@@westberrygaming9741 while it might be a spin off name wise it still takes place directly after 5... Making it a direct sequel spinoff of 5 which is why I said it's a direct sequel to 5... Because it picks up after edf5... {The more you know shooting star}

1 : do the corpses disappear immediately? 2 : can you customise your character with daft cosmetic items? 3 : if they do finally manage to break into the mainstream, will they have to change the game so much that us nerdy types will forget it? I mean, I don't have a console so I'll wait for 5.1 but the questions are still valid. Oh, and I hope you threw that expensive, flaming Upper Decker in the trash.
1. Corpses disappear after a short time. They will pile up and become an obstacle that can block your bullets. 2. There are tons of cosmetics to unlock as you play. 3. If it were to go mainstream, probably. It would probably be able to keep the goofiness but everything else would need a full Monster Hunter World style makeover.
@@tigerfestivals5137 Sweet. I know I coulda looked that up but i'm lazy af - glad the corpses stay for a bit, that was definitely my most pressing concern.. Cheers!
For me I picked up Insect Armageddon for 5 bucks. To be honest I had a complete blast with it. Buck I had a friend that was all about COD, Halo, and that kind of Multiplayer jam. But he saw Insect Armageddon and was like. "Is this a good game?" Me *Smiles and chuckles.* "Ohhh buck yaaa thats a good game." A few moments later I'm saying as he's enjoying the madness of the first level. Then I say "Wait for the ticks." And soon he was waste deep in a $hit storm that he was panicking. For me Insect Armageddon was epic and I can't hate much of it exspeshily at a level 8 class and getting the special weapon for that class. let's just say War Crimes is a understatement. CWO Night Rain will never be topped in most ridiculous soldier ever played.
I love EDF 5, but I honestly miss the Hectors from the previous games. The frogs and alien infantry were fun to fight, but I miss the mechanical noodle-men. Especially when the physics engine couldn't handle them and would have a seizure trying to render their corpses flying all over the place. There was also a surprising dearth of underground missions. I play as an Air Raider and half of his Limpet guns are kinda useless above ground, since they're designed for close quarters and enclosed spaces. For me, 4.1 was more fun than 5, but gameplay? Yeah, EDF5 thwomps 4.1 into the ground. Also, the flame ZE turrets are absolutely hilariously OP. Tiny bit of damage, but their sheer rate of fire and absurd range made them my best friend. Seriously, their reach is like 60+ meters. Mount a couple on a tank and it just became your best anti-air vehicle.
2:06 he means that Sony of America decided that the games weren't high quality enough to be released there, something they did a lot back then, but Sony of Europe didn't. That's also why games like Ninjabread Man and Animal Soccer World (though obviously EDF is infinitely better than those) got European PS2 releases, but not American ones.
The unlocking of weaponry is what’s killing me with this game. I prefer to unlock the weapons once instead of having to buy them afterwards with materials I’d need to grind for
This game is cheesy and the most "anime" game ever. But that's the point and part of the charm. Also, killing large amounts of bugs in massive battles is odly satisfying. The amount of weapons is pretty impressive too.
I recently played through this entire campaign on a ps5 and.. I'd say of the games in the series I have played it was the least "fun". it was shorter than most campaigns, had the smaller maps you mentioned, had a lot of "night" missions that were aweful to do, the weapns lacked FUN in variety, some of the objective big baddies took a ton of damage to kill with little feedback if what you did was at all effective, and they heavily put emphasis on "high damage = ridiculous reload/recharge times" so it went from run and gun goodness to gun and run like hell badness(reminds me of adding gun overheat meters to contra lol). Plus the story lacked any kind of "epic" over-the-top feel like prior ones had. I'd say I actually enjoyed the old insect armageddon more overall, which... is saying something. I hope Iron Rain isn't most folk's first foray. 4.1 or 5 are far more "dumb fun".
Glad someone else on youtube gets this game. Loved EDF 4.1, can only hope we might see 5 or iron rain on PC. But insect armageddon is truly awful, going to disagree with that, heavily so. I'm hopeful for iron rain, but no thanks if it's like IA
I wasn't sure about EDF 5 at first (especially with it being digital exclusive) but there are noticable and welcome improvements. However I am feeling like it has smaller levels than 4.1 also. That's not necessarily a bad thing because sometimes levels in 4.1 had you wandering around a ridiculously sized area trying to grab all the drops. One thing I don't like about 5, how about an item magnet like Devil May Cry has?
Sony was notoriously blocking what they considered bad games in the US, Sony Europe was more lax. Supposedly their definition of bad covered most 2D games.
EDF 4 took a lot of ideas from Insect Armageddon and improved upon them, I think EDF 6 will apply any lessons learned from Iron Rain to the mainline games.
It's a huge bummer that it seems like 4.1 is gonna be the only PC release of this series, it was kind of amazing playing 4.1 at a locked 60fps without my computer breaking a sweat. Since iron rain is an unreal engine game it'd probably run WAY better on even a similarly specced machine to a ps4. It's also a little bizarre to try and break into the western market and not do a PC/xbox version, did nobody tell them there's no real platform allegiance or something. People just buy whatever system they want it's not like sony dominates here.

and the villain is the big death star Mothership, it even does the main villain thing of showing up throughout the game to taunt you after having just dropped off more stuff to keep you at bay until you make it stay in one place and fight you with everything it has.
and in EDF4 (2025) the story makes mention of Storm1 actually being among your ranks in the last mission, fighting another threat you dont have time to deal with during that mission. if i am remembering correctly.
vicious cycle also made robotech battlecry and im pretty shure they retextured a battle pod "foot" for the intro at 8:08...
I need to actually play Earth Defense Force. It seems right up my alley.
I love how you casually mention *AUTO SAVING* as a new great new feature! 😂 😂
Great video. Lots of passion and very well edited. I’ll have to check out this series for sure now.
so guys drop your choice which one is the best? EDF5 or Iron Rain?
2:14 I think he's referring to Sony's old policy that if a game comes out in the West it MUST have an English dub, but at the time Sandlot didn't really have the funds for it, and why the eventual localizations removed all troop chatter and rebranded to kind of circumvent that. (Plus Sony laxxed on that in later years, but it's also why we ended up getting the goofy English Yakuza dub).
I really hope more EDF games come to PC... Love the series!
I got through EDF 4.1 and 5 last year and last month with my roommate, respectively. They're the best and worst experience you can have in gaming, simultaneously, and I wouldn't trade my time with them for the world.
Great video. Love all of the content you create. Keep up the good work.
Yeah I think consoles are not ready to really support a narrative version of EDF that will appeal to the casual crowd.
Might have been better if Iron Rain was a next gen launch.
iron rain isn't a perfect game but its still a fun game.
Mech sucks, maps reusing too many times within 52 missions it becomes so noticable. Biggest downside is the constant knockdown.
Man I played like 150 hours of 2017. I miss these games. Gotta play these new ones.
I’ve played them all except the very first two that you can’t get in Canada. Love it!
EDF 2025 is backwards compatible on Xbox One. You didn't cover how much better the Xbox 360 version of EDF 2025 runs on Xbox One backwards compatibility.
Does it was gonna buy 4.1 on sale for 17 bucks
How's the framerate and screen tearing?
I'd buy EDF 5 on steam.
Noah Tekulve did u buy it
The Super Best Friends got me into this series. If you like (or in the mood for) dumb, sort of repetitive fun along the lines of an Omega-Force Warriors game, definitely check this series out.
haha mark from cgr! "EDF EDF"
thats how i know of it also
Your facial expression in the AVGN alone killed me 😂. Oh and your channel is awesome
I like to think EDF is just the fun parts of Anime where the OP main character just slaughters hundreds of nameless goons
Also I want to say EDF insect Armageddon was my first time playing in EDF game, I didn’t complete it but it sure was fun and I have yet to see an enemy in any other game that replicates the terror and pure intimidation of those giant Mark 2 (it’s been a while so I can’t really remember the name) They were just awesome
5 or iron rain? which better?
I never heard of EDF until 4.1.
And it looked like the kind of weird off beat quirky game I tend to go for.
And at least its not boring and grey.
This is pretty much a game I know I would enjoy playing, then I look at one picture of a swarm of giant spiders jumping and I remember why it's a hands off affair and my admiration can and should be a distant one sided affair.
A little sad you didn't mention EDF2 for the Vita but that's ok, nobody talks about the Vita anymore... :(
EDF2pV2 was already just a remaster of the PSP version anyways
What's a vita anyway. Am I right lads
Always have to thank you for getting me into this series! It is my favorite dumb fun game.
EDF 1&2
EDF 3 (reboot of the first)
EDF 4 (sequel to 3)
EDF 5 (another timeline reboot)
EDF iron rain (direct sequel to 5)
Iron rain is a spinoff not a sequel
@@westberrygaming9741 while it might be a spin off name wise it still takes place directly after 5... Making it a direct sequel spinoff of 5 which is why I said it's a direct sequel to 5... Because it picks up after edf5... {The more you know shooting star}
The aliens retreat in 5 because they lost
And your character is storm 1 not closer
@@westberrygaming9741 you play as Nero in dmc4 and raiden in mgs2... I guess those aren't sequels 😗
NICE! A new show. I’ve been re-watching a bunch of the old shows for the past week. I’m so pumped for something on the newer side! ;)
Congrats on getting your face in the new AVGN video. Glad you survived the explosion.
I just loved edf 5s ending where you have to kill a god
They finally added a Godzilla
Im getting a PS4 next month and I was lookin for a video with a recommendation, for which game to start with. Thanks bro^^
Also,I liked your Castlevania and Parasite Eve videos from years back! Greetings from Germany #GetTheVibez
Unrelated, but I popped big time when I saw you in the AVGN video!
Cheers!
Earth Deck-Enhancer Force
To quote EDF World Brothers
"Iron Rain was not a sequel to Insect Armageddon..."
@ 2:00 The music is godlike!!!
One of my favourite youtubers that i have a bad habit of forgetting about...
Iron Rain has the best gameplay out of all the EDF games, 5 is the best overall though in my opinion.
People: why did you buy iron rain
Me: *prowler grapple intensifies*
EDF 4.1 is one of my favorite split screen games on Steam! Please please please release EDF 5 on Steam!!! Ill buy it day one!
Edf 2017 was my first game when I was in elementary school, it was fuckin' fun then and gave me and my brother early love for the games.
Man this just makes me want to boot up 4.1 again on Steam lol by the way nice cameo in AVGNs latest video!
Great video, you nailed it. EDF!
Sony was notoriously blocking what they considered bad games in the US, Sony Europe was more lax. Supposedly their definition of bad covered most 2D games.
8:07 i still have that game till this day and i love it
EDF 4 took a lot of ideas from Insect Armageddon and improved upon them, I think EDF 6 will apply any lessons learned from Iron Rain to the mainline games.
For the record EDF came out first so isect Armageddon is the one that did the rip off
I'll wait for the Aladdin Deck Enchancer port
The 5th one is awesome please make more. This game is way too much fun to play!
I wonder if the classic game room videos has something to do with this
I think that's how I first found out about the series. Thanks CGR!
