so I got one of these years ago and ive been wanting to learn how to play it since, however i also don't know how to read music, and the few people who were gonna teach me never got around to helping me learn, do you have any suggestions?
I have great news for you :-) I don’t know how to read music either! I started by learning from Brett Ridgeway who has great lessons right here on UA-cam. If you work your way through his first 12 lessons you will have the foundation you need to play all kinds of songs. This is so beautiful! I'm learning dulcimer, I think it'll take me a long time to learn how to do individual notes on strings. I have a good ear, is it just picking and memorizing what fret and string will do what?

If you are just learning to play across the strings, I recommend working through the 12 lesson series by Brett Ridgeway. It helps you get the basics. Then after that, yes for me it is a matter of Picking and memorizing :-)
