There's nothing like a nice cup of afternoon tea, some ginger cake, and discussing the plans for the forthcoming heist. All so absolutely delightful and civilised.
Very good ginger cake, or golden rich tea biscuits included talking a heist Id love it if theres any guys in UK willing to do a run in on one in a civilized fashion like this.
I have acquired the fondness for bank hiest movies due to the suspense. All these movies ended with the thieves finally caught and I was wondering recently if there are any which they got away to enjoy their labour. Finally got to watch this. What a wish come true! Thanks.
What a great film and well made too and no CGI either, thank God! Brilliant casting of the actors from the old days. Really excellent! This is how I remember London in the 1980's, fairly light traffic and not chock-a-block like it is today. And one often saw good films on the telly, how things have changed.
Great movie. I've never seen it before. Martin was so good even back then. I love the fact that the cars were matter of fact everyday cars and today they are wild gems.
I am not sure where or when I first saw this movie but everytime I have passed the Unilever building in the 40 odd years since I am reminded of this great little caper, of which I had forgotten many of the details. Thanks for sharing (y)
This movie has so much non-verbal communication in it; subtle cues between the characters; one will give another a funny look; it might be an 'in-joke', or a look that has another meaning, and you're left to interpret that; things aren't necessarily being spelled out to you. I realize it's subjective but, I absolutely love that in a movie: - it kind of adds another layer of 'messing with you' as you try to figure out what's going on and where things are going. Really enjoying this. Even had to rewind a few times just to watch certain scenes as I enjoyed them that much.
Do you think maybe that neat stuff might just be planned out, like on purpose, and discussed at great length in introductory film production, and even appreciation, courses for indigent persons in major European cities every other Thursday around lunch time?
Actually, the other movie Heist had a selection of phrases between the experienced criminal in-group. Gene Hackman, Ricky Jay, Rebecca Pidgeon (Danny De Vito not in the group).

It is stressful to see these men working underground in the sewers...It is a peaceful robbery without any killing or guns. It makes time on the viewer seat enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your work is well acted and a genious plan. When people don't get caught it makes the plan perfect.
except the authorities found the dead guy in the sewer, were able to trace his accomplices, and ended up convicting everyone. fortunately it was the UK, so their lifetime sentences resulted in 2 years served.
Amazing. A time when actors had calibre and talent. Shame that modern cinema is a total farce resulting in us all needing a time machine to find entertainment.
Very enjoyable without the attendant clichés and tropes . Glad to see that Sheen could make the career transition without much issues . After all it's just a matter of designs when it comes to being an architect . Finney in a heist is like unexpectedly biting into a piece of chocolate in a cake . Great movie indeed .
How lucky you are! I was born in Livingstone in 1972, lived there till 82. Now I miss the Tourist Capital, my home on Obote Avenue, my parents and those serene, blissful days.

Not to mention the fact that he quickly becomes an expert in the city's underground system and the configuration of the bank schematics and possible entry points.

A few technical flaws that would make the plan unworkable in the real World but a great and enjoyable movie. A vital lesson that's even more relevant now than then... Many ordinary people are willing to lie for their paychecks.
Oh I LOVE this movie, I even used to have it on Betamax (😳) and I’d not seen it since.. an absolute classic bank robbery movie without a single new fangled computermabob to be seen, the one and only nitpick - I bet Martin Sheen regretted that ‘tache afterwards 😂 truly brilliant, thanks so much XX

So here's my question? How did " Peter " got out from the vault? Did the rain stopped and the water receded and he got in thru the hole and out ? That's the only way I see it, anyways it was superb !!
Blue car parked next to their getaway van, Finney gave him the keys to the blue car before he and the other left Sheen in the vault. My first thought too, at the end, how they just sped things up super quickly right at the end. Maybe they ran out of money for production costs? I've seen this speeding things up at the end done before, not exactly "mailing it in" but it does feel a bit out of synch with the rest of the movie.
OMG , I saw them filming the movie when I was working across from the building, I recognise some of actors who were coming and going and the yellow lorry.
For a this type of movie, very little violence, rather sad to see such brillance wasted on planning such a criminal enterprise. Makes me wonder what is wrong with society that drives people to these extremes. Even today, a decent job must pay over $35.oo bucks an hour in order to pay rent, utitilites and insurance, food, and everything needed to care for ones self. Here in America, the American Dream died in 1980. People had to choose between OWNING a car, or renting an apartment, but not both. That is was my life. I chose to live on my own w/o a car. Relying instead on mass transit. Millions in America make this choice. Now people are living in Tents, and going off to work becasue they cannot even afford rent. The new motto in my area: Remain housed.
this is not abnormal "legitimate" has meant nothing for centuries. Few if any have gone what they deserve unless they took it. Fear of god doesnt exist much since long ago.
I've never had debt except a couple of mortgages and was at my wits end when I decided to sell my waterfront house to put down on another. I had to get a VA loan which almost sent me insane. But I could never commit a crime. I was offered a few million on one ocassion in a insurance fraud scheme and given a check for 5 million for another which I would not cash. I would be the worst criminal.

The otherwise perfectly planned and executed heist was nearly ruined by their neglect of British weather 😂. Great movie!
Thanks for wrecking a great movie.

Pretty good 'caper' film. Three fine actors in the lead.

Beautiful Ending
It's amazing how fast Martin Sheen's character turned from an honest and principled man, into a crook, after his entitled wife started chewing on him.
Wonder if in real life the positions aren't reversed. Who's the crook and who's honest?
Might have been triggered a tad by his mounting debts...
Behind every successful man is a grouchy woman...
