So many great actors. A good story, no soft porn, no bad language no violence. No car chases. No guns and blood. Brilliant.
Hollywood cannot match these kind of masterful old timer movies. Sheer brilliant 👏.
For a film that was made forty-plus years ago, it continues to stand firm against the rubbish that we see Hollywood spitting out. Thanks for posting and be safe 🙏
Believe me, forty-plus years is not such a long time
@@fern6777 in terms of film popularity, yes it is. Ask any film historian or film theorist.
I agree with the sentiment, but your sentence does not make sense.
I remember as a Dutch Australian travelling all over Western Europe in the 70's and 80's when this movie was made. My knowledgeable Dutch uncle taught me about NATO and explained the Warsaw Pact. I then read books about the Soviet Union which enlightened and educated me considerably before travelling through the ex Warsaw Pact countries once the borders opened up in 1989. I still remember seeing Russian tanks practising on the old Napoleonic battlefield of Jena (in 1990) in East Germany. I also wanted to cross Russia on the Trans Siberian train in the 80's but it was a difficult trip to undertake for a foreigner back then.
This movie is an excellent reminder of life during the Cold War times and explains why the Ukrainians are fighting so hard today and why so many ex Warsaw Pact countries are coming to their aid. Many people who have grown up in the comfort of the West are ignorant and uneducated to the oppressiveness that occurred to the people of those ex Warsaw Pact countries which therefore causes a division in the West. This is a good movie to help enlighten those people.
Dear Dutch Australian, you didn't understand anything. You didn't live in the Soviet Union so you cannot say anything. Don't read your books which don't reflect the truth. We all now can compare and say where the was better. Our education in the Soviet Union was the best, medicine free, education at the University free, public transport so cheap, the rest were politics. The Soviet union was so big with different nationalities, we lived so peacefully and friendly. And then in the late 80s we were fooled, like now, the west was poking it nose into different countries. Come now and visit countries surrounded Russia. These all satellite countries are empty, economy ruined, don't produce anything, but, yes, we are now "free". Most of the people are displaced... Sad very sad. So you please keep your cr@p of being "oppressed" to yourself. Reply not needed.
I too travelled in Eastern Europe in the '80s. Romania was something else ! At least the Iron Curtain kept the wogs out !
This is a fantastic movie! I can't believe I am only discovering it today! Such wonderful performances, especially by Martin Sheen and Sam Neill.
At around 14.00: the father was a great teacher, but he had the bad habit of telling the truth; so they put him away - Martin Sheen. A great line from an intriguing movie. Many thanks for the upload 😀.
A great story, very well played out, and lots of suspense without any of today's bells & whistles.
And Martin is a beautiful soul
that is mostly unaccepted.
As for me, such entities should be the leaders!
Yeah I know and do anything folks, so no responses needed.
Take care anyone........
uh cmon man, s nothing against to agree, at least for me
Great old school cold war spy thiller. Not had the pleasure of seeing it before but enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for posting.
This is a new movie to me, I've never seen it. I'm so glad to see Martin and Sam work together to make a great movie, I very much enjoyed it. 🤟🤟🤟
I went through Check Point Charlie into East Berlin in 1986 - was rather unpleasant experience.
Being in the GDR even as a tourist was unpleasant.
I enjoyed this. This is my kind of movies the Cold War spy movies and this had lot of known actors and Martin Sheen shows here he is the best actor in the family.
The ending could have easily gone in two ways, the way it did go was very satisfying!
Watching this again for the 1st time in age's, still got great atmosphere, still got a great cast and storyline thank you!
Had this movie on a DVD about 10 yrs ago, nice to be able to see it again.
One of the most Best film by Martin Sheen, just can't imagine the Superb Story how the story writer kneaded such a Great Excellent Story, awesome cinematography, all the Characters Played their own roles Extremely Excellent, thanks to everyone who had made this movie Success ❤❤❤
A Masterpiece! I remember watching this film in my youth and instantly fell in love with it.
Same here
Not so nice if you lived in that time and traditions of the german staates n recognise that lil to nothing have changed!
They do here around "here we go again........"!
Epic!Films are not like this nowadays.Loved it!
A real movie, every second of it.
Brilliant film. Great actors Intelligent script. Tthanks ❤
Excellent. Martin is a great actor, a movie made back when great acting was important. WOW Emilio looks so much like his dad❤.
Featuring the great Michael Lonsdale. You know it’s a good movie when he’s in it.
More twists than a twister . Fantastic .
Excellent. Modern movies have much to learn from this. Superb writing and acting and directing. Loved it, kept me gripped the whole way through. Beautiful non woke story...
You are so out of touch you don't even realize that this is very woke indeed.
“Non- woke”? Jesus!
This was an absolute brilliant GEM! VERY GOOD.
Thank you for making this excellent film available.
Excellent movie that seems to narrate a true story. - Excellent long métrage qui semble nous raconter une histoire vraie.
Ooh , I’m going to settle down and watch this one ! Thank you Midnight Screening.
Great movie. I had first seen Brigitte Fossey in 1980 in the movie La Boum. I was then 16, and had an immediate crush on her. Nice to see her again in her grand beauty in this movie. Martin Sheen and Sam Neill are great stars too. Overall, this movie is great.
One of the best movies on utube
Excellent movie 😍👌👍 A great cast too!
I swear Michael Lonsdale has had his voice dubbed over !!. Anyway thanks for another high quality upload TMS. Very enjoyable.
Great movie. Especially interesting to see the MUCH younger Sam Neill in a pivotal role. I think he was already in his stride at the time this movie was made.
A younger Sam Neill was pivotal in Sleeping Dogs .
A great movie. Sometime in the distant past I think I must have seen it before, because I remember the ending, but it was great to see it again.
Thank You The Midnight Screening
An extremely well scripted movie ,I thoroughly enjoyed it. Pity they can't do it these days.
Excellent movie with all the suspense and action
Real good movie 😊thanks for sharing....quite young Sheen & Neill

Excellent soundtrack
Top notch.

Good movie and worth watching
brilliant film
Thankyou!
Good old times, when train windows could be opened. The whole movie made me nostalgic. I liked it though I nearly had not recognised Sam Neil. So young....
Very good cast.
Excellent film
Thanks for the movie
Well done 👏
Great movie , thanks for sharing it .
Very authentic and atmospheric - another Le Carre.
Excellent! 👍👍
Bravo 👏 👏 👏 oldie but grand work by all. 😊
I have thought for a long time Sam Neil is one of the most underrated actors.
Aussie Jeff Moore
Sam Neill is a kiwi…
It takes a certain kind of character to be a spy or work undercover...calmness and courage...most don't have it...
It's just a movie 😂
@isildursbane2758 are you saying that we don't have spies
Also the ability to work Independently in stressful situations
How do you know that ?
@@harrydebastardeharris987 because I know someone who worked undercover and because it's bloody obvious that's how..
Good film.
Made it 1982, it's not CGI, but story itself makes it attractive.
?!?
Excellent movie....never seen before.
Good movie....
Damn, this is how espionage movies are made. Nothing flashy.
Sheen and Neil were both excellent.
A nice film.
Great cast: Sam Neill, Martin Sheen, Derick Jacobi, Michael Lonsdale, Frank Findlay, Warren Clarke.
Thanks for Brigitte Fossey.
Cool film
No weapons. Not a single shot fired !
Great
Michael Lonsdale has a fantastic voice, and it's a crime to put a dubbing over it.
A great movie!. There are not many movies depicting the atmosphere of the cold war times. I know that younger generations can only experience this thru movies like this. I was a Dutch soldier at the time and stationed nearby the fence for a while. In the west we were very aware of what it was that made us different and how the administrations of the East Block were holding millions of their citizens hostage. After the Berlin wall came down everything was very quickly washed clean. Still Russia today is not that far from its terrible past. They just havent found a nice sounding ideology to give it a name.
Younger generations should learn once and for all that socialism is blackmail, terror & constant betrayal! I was in East Germany and the movie captures the atmosphere extremely well !
It has always been the same ideology, Imperialism, in 1917 they needed a new name for it, because they had no legitimate claim to the Tsardom. 😉
@@JohnFenlonhmm.... except under some empires, many individuals gained prosperity by adding value to other people's lives.
I think the socialist empires just took and repressed, in case people by growing, the people grew powerful.
@@theflamingone8729 Some of The People ! Particularily The Murderous Ones !
Thanks for uploading excellent cast acting a real game of cat n mouse nice ending recommend
Have to admit to going into Wikipedia to join all the dots, to me personally the writer, John Briley, put in a few twists and turns too many. How did Martin Sheen’s character of Alex Holbeck know where the Enigma Machine was in East Germany, why wasn’t it better guarded and why wasn’t it consistently moved around ? But well-acted and the Director, Jeannot Szwarc did keep the tension and excitement rolling along. Martin Sheen went well as Alex Holbeck as did Sam Neill as Dimitri
Vasilikov, Neill often much-underrated as an Actor. Brigette Fossey as Karen Reinhardt gave the impression that she had seen and heard so much Bull-Shit that she was somewhat numbed by it all but it is likely that this is exactly the persona that Director Szwarc wanted Fossey to project. The Film was released in October, 1982 but the reality was that East Germany was a millstone around the neck of The Russians since 1952, 30 years before. In 1952 then Soviet Leader, Josef Stalin, sent his NKVD Chief, Lavrenti Beria, to East Germany to ask the then East German Authorities would they consider unifying with West Germany ? True ! The original budget for
“ Enigma “ in 1982 was $8.1 Million and its Box Office at the time ( Screen Only ) was $894,000-00.
Martin Sheen looks very much like his hero James Dean in this fine film.
Not Bad Movie Nice Film

classic
Fossey is hot. Neil ex. as is Sheen & Lonsdale. great film.
👍
41:46 As a German, Marty Sheen should know to say "Auf Wiederhören" top his radio listeners upon signing off for the night. And not "Auf Wiedersehen." Major snafu.
What a blunder , what a blunder ! Pity nobody gives a duck
Hallo
Good old number.
In which year this movies was telecasted first
Is this the original film? There seem to be strange, sudden editing cuts.
Very enjoyable. I kept my eyes peeled, but couldn't spot PooTin, must've been well disguised. The bearded midget, perhaps?
2:46, 4:00 (guy with cigarette) has his voice been dubbed by Orson Welles?
1:33:10 Amor vincit omnia
1982
That is definitely not Michel Lonsdale's voice. He's a fluent English speaker (bilingual in French and English). Why do you suppose they dubbed his voice?

🎬🎥📽️🎞️🎭⭐🎭⭐🎭⭐💥🔥💥🔥💥🔥📺👍. Very good Actor's!!!
Funny they show the Flag of West Germany (FRG) in East Germany [at 1:04] and not the one of East Germany (GDR)
